St. John’s volunteers honoured with service medals

A new monthly art group ‘Art for Arts  Sake’ will be starting at the Old School  Arts  Centre  on  Tuesday  6th  March.   Focusing  on  encouraging  each  other  and having a good time, coordinator Ro  Fawcett says “ It’s really an opportunity  for  like  minds  to  get  together  and  get  inspired by each other.”

Last Sunday 12 February saw Andrea Gilshnan and  Jan Tapp each receive a Service Medal of the Order  of  St  John  recognising  the  12  years  of  service  that  they have contributed to the organisation. 5"4*),# !-# ,# ='+0"&))*#5:(0+,"%)# $/1%)*# '"# &2)# 7,6+,"# Station as well as a member of the Area Committee. She has  2)+4#&2)#3,-&#3'-!&!'"#'/#5*),#C9)%0&!=)#$/1%)*#,"4#%'"&*!(0&)-# hundreds of hours of duty to St John annually. Friction surfaces over split in roles There’s a fraction too much friction  between  the  Raglan  Community  Board  and  the  Raglan  Coastal  Reserves  Advisory  Committee,  if  a  discussion  at  a  community  board meeting at the town hall last  Tuesday is anything to go by. Tensions  surfaced  when  Waikato  District  Council  water  &  facilities  general  manager  Richard  Bax  told  the  meeting  that  an  advisory  committee  meeting  the  previous  night  had  asked  him  to  let  board  members  know  the  committee was about to remove the last  of the old stand of trees beside the skate  %"34$"*)$',55&%$0&/)'$"+$<,47"$=,3"(*9 It would then “kick off” the next stage  of new planting amid the dunes, he said. The  removal  of  the  trees  has  been  a  contentious  issue  in  the  community

Deputy  chairman  Allan  Vink  saw  does not get anywhere”. the committee as an anomaly and Terry  Horn  urged  the  elimination  of  overlap  between  the  two  bodies.    But  Richard  Bax was insistent the council found the  advisory  committee’s  work  very  useful  to  the  council,  though  conceded  there  were  some  recent  items  that  should  perhaps  be  considered  instead  by  the  community board.

Community boards’ lack of teeth has  been a contentious issue in recent times.

One  Waikato  District  Council  mayoral  candidate  stood  at  the  last  elections  on  a  platform  of  giving  community boards greater power, while  frustrations  locally  over  trying  to  have  their voice heard beyond the divvy were  "$ '(1*(05"*+$ 2"5+,%$ (*$ +.&$ -.,/&$ ,2$ +.&$ The  friction  between  the  board  and  previous  Raglan  Community  Board  not  committee is obviously not just oneway,  standing again.  as  Richard  Bax  told  the  meeting  some  A.T.
