Describe your practice?

After retiring from the busy world of Herald Advertising and moving to a fairly remote farm to marry and live, I The Raglan Club. Dine in or Takeaway. 22-24 Bow Street.................. 825 8278 was able to devote my time to painting.

Since school days art has always been in my life but time was limited with a busy career and family. After a course in acrylics I decided that this was the Shane Ardern MP medium that suited me best and began TARANAKI-KING COUNTRY to paint mostly stylised seascapes and landscapes in bright primary colours What are you working on at the moment?

Electorate office: My new work at the moment is 25 Roche Street, Te Awamutu investigating circles and incorporating p 07 825 0263 (Freephone) them into landscapes. When did you first start painting?

When I started school at five I remember my teacher praising a drawing of a tiger to my parents and I was quite upset because I didn’t think it was very good!

The best piece of advice you ever got?

The best advice I was ever given is ‘there are NO rules’ which gives the artist a wonderful feeling of freedom to translate onto a canvas.

If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself?

It would not be frivolous and I would need to win lotto but I covet one of Hoteres black paintings entitled “Rosemary”. I saw it at the Gavit Brewster Gallery in New Plymouth many years ago but have no idea where it is now. That painting spoke to me at the time and I had to be dragged away.

Ultimate four dinner party guests, dead or alive?

I like to entertain fun people so would invite Judi Dench, my daughter Catherine, Jeremy Clarkson and Billy Conolly and I would serve them bangers and mash and gallons of red wine. Expect we would be laughing so much that not a lot would be eaten!

New Years resolution?

New Years resolution: To make somebody smile everyday. The checkout girl, the traffic cop, a new neighbour, someone on the street and my lovely husband. Give it a try, this is very rewarding!

Big catch-up bills wiped but Meridian customers suspicious of smart meters

eridian Energy confirmed this week it would wipe large catch-up bills sent to about 20 Raglan customers who, it discovered, had been under-charged for their electricity use.

The move comes after some disgruntled Meridian customers say they were hit recently with monthly bills of $2000 and more.

One local consumer’s been embroiled in a legal battle over a $2500 bill, while another says she’s lost all faith and switched providers after being charged

by Meridian – in what was described as a catch-up payment – $700 more than usual just before Christmas.

A belated offer by Meridian of a $200 discount on her next power bill did nothing to change Fiona Edwards’ mind. She paid up, then signed with Contact Energy.

“I can’t trust them [Meridian],” she told the Chronicle this week. “I can’t do it again … I’ve never had a bill like that, ever!”

Whaingaroa Harbour Care manager Fred Lichtwark, who recently got a $2200 bill after being told the month before he had nothing to pay, has also condemned

the company he’d been “ramping up as being the best” since becoming part of its community liaison group back when the Te Uku wind farm was established.

While Meridian has now wiped Fred’s debt, he insists it’s inexcusable to make incorrect meter readings. “No healthy organisation does that to anybody it wants to maintain as customers.”

He reckons Raglan’s new smart meters are to blame and that “they’re not so smart after all”.

The customer involved in the legal battle – who did not want to be named – agrees the new smart meters could be the culprit. She describes herself as energyconscious and says she normally has no summer/winter account fluctuations because of her gas and fire usage, yet found her power bills once smart meters were installed skyrocketed last year from $150 or $160 to about $560 a month.

Then, she says, she got the $2500 bill.

“I jumped up and down and kept disputing the cost,” she says, then suggested to Meridian that something was wrong with the smart meters.

Although Meridian reduced that bill by $800, she says her power was cut for about two weeks until she came up with the

balance.

She remains unconvinced the refund was enough and says she asked Meridian staff who came out recently to check on her smart meter’s calibration: “Why give me a smart meter when Genesis own it and you can’t read it?”

Wellington-based Meridian confirmed to the Chronicle it was now looking into the metering issues, which it said showed that it had been undercharging some Raglan area customers.

“We have contacted all affected customers today (Monday) to let them know they do not have to pay the amount they’ve been undercharged,” said media manager Michelle Brooker. “However from now on these customers will be billed the correct amount, which will see an increase in their monthly bills.”

Meridian staff were to have met some affected customers on Tuesday, and were discussing with others where and when to meet to sort the problems.

Meantime, the company said, it was “working hard to discover how this [situation] happened to ensure it doesn’t happen again”.

Plenty of Raglanites take on Weekbix Tryathalon

Up for the Weetbix Challenge: Local competitors gathered after the event

nder the trees at the Univerisity grounds on Sunday a large group of Raglan families gathered to support their children in the annual Weetbix TRYathalon.

The Weetbix Tryathalon is a communitybased event that encourages Kiwi kids, between the ages of 7 and 15, to participate in a fun day out. This year there were over 2500 participants and Raglan children got the opportunity to meet national sporting

heros, including Valerie Adams and Sarah Walker.

The TRYathlon inspires children to get moving in a friendly and supportive environment where the emphasis is on enjoying an active lifestyle. Kids of all abilities cross the finish line a champion and everyone who participates takes home a medal.

It's all about having a go. Event entrants can take part as individuals, or part of a team, to complete the three legs of the

event (swim, bike, run). Kids of all sporting abilities are invited to take part.

The Weet-Bix TRYathlon is made possible thanks to volunteers and two local volunteers Chris and Shelley Meek gave up their time to be marshals on the bike course.

Jetty warning sign on way following spate of rescues

aikato District Council has promised to install urgently at the Bow Street jetty a sign warning of strong currents.

The undertaking comes after Raglan Kayak – which is based nearby – told the Chronicle it frequently rescues tourists and children being swept away by outgoing tides and fears there could be a tragedy if no-one’s around to help.

“We’re happy we can be of help to people who find themselves in trouble when the tide starts ripping out like a river, but potentially there’s going to be an incident we

miss,” said Raglan Kayak co-owner Candide Reid.

She said while they made rescues every summer of “often very panicked” swimmers, and sometimes passing boats pulled swimmers aboard, the matter came to a head during a recent weekend of king tides when Raglan Kayak contractor Dasa Bramley had to rescue a child and his dad – who’d gone out to get him – at the same time.

“Dasa put a lifejacket on, rushed out to them in a kayak and got them to hold on to it,” she said. “But it was still very difficult paddling back against the tide to get them to safety. It was quite frightening.”

Council general manager service delivery Tim Harty told

the Chronicle the jetty railing had been repaired following recent vandalism but there was currently no signage at the site.

“It is clear there is a need for a sign communicating the risk the strong current poses and we will have one installed as soon as possible,” he said.

The council appreciated having Raglan Kayak bring the matter to its attention.

It’s understood there was a “no jumping, no swimming” sign at the jetty some time ago, though no sign would have been much help in the case of a recent tourist who got into trouble and who – Candide says – could speak no English other than “help”.

Raglan waters after failing to find commercial quantities of oil or gas is seen by Raglan activist and Tainui hapu environmental spokesperson Angeline Greensill as a bittersweet victory.

“We’re glad they’re gone, celebrating they’re gone, but our thoughts now are with Ngai Tahu,” she said of the Noble Bob Douglas’s departure south to a new exploration site in the Canterbury basin off the Otago coast.

Angeline said she understood a whole lot of activities were planned to prevent Anadarko – a Texan-based oil giant implicated in the big Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010 – servicing its vessel, and there were also calls for more Banners on the Beach protests.

“They won’t get a clear ride there [down south] either,” she

said. “And anything they do will affect us, of course.”

Anadarko’s drilling to a depth of 4619 metres was preceded by a series of big land-based protests, and the drillship was met by a protest flotilla on its arrival at the exploration site 160 kilometres directly west of Raglan.

Angeline herself is just back from Waitangi, where she says a hikoi protesting deep-sea oil drilling was one of the focuses.

While she was hopeful the Government might eventually get the message, Angeline said in the meantime it seemed hellbent on raping and pillaging the marine environment. “It’s crazy stuff with no regard to our marine species,” she said.

The Government needed to find a better way of building the economy and to focus more on getting alternatives to fossil fuels, which were creating the greenhouse effect.

Chance to try out Sealegs and maybe buy a house

H

ome buyers who baulk at viewing anything across the harbour because of the isolation and transport difficulties may be thinking again after an open home this weekend at an upmarket Te Akau property.

And it’s not just that a Sealegs amphibious craft will whisk them on Saturday almost to the door of the Te Akau Wharf Road house – a brand-new base model is being thrown in for whoever pays the $1.1 million asking price for the “superior home” set amid six acres of bush and enjoying panoramic views.

The 11-3 open day is also doubling as a “demo day” for Auckland-based Sealegs International, and real estate agent George Barton says interested people who turn up at the boat ramp near the Coastguard shed behind the fire station will be able to “jump on and come for a ride”.

George – who’s based at Century 21 Countrywide Real Estate in Huntly – said the unusual marketing ploy was the idea of the owners, former New Zealand V8s circuit driver Brook Jones and his wife Julie.

“They’re buying a Sealegs to go with the house because they thought it would be a good idea in a nice, quiet place like that – much easier than having a boat and a mooring,” he said. An amphibious craft offered effortless access to the harbour and open sea, as well as across to restaurants, shopping and the local beaches.

He added the Jones’ had found they couldn’t always rely on a water taxi being

The Sealegs model they were buying was the 6.1 R, which is described on the company’s website as “the ideal general purpose all-round day boat for fishing, waterskiing and diving”.

The model appears to sell for well upwards of $100,000 and is typically powered by a 115hp outboard, with a separate motor driving the hydraulic wheels.

George said while purchasers would get a standard Sealegs package, they had the option to upgrade if they wished.

Sealegs craft aren’t new to Raglan: George said Ted Dixon of Sealegs International confirmed they’d already sold them to two clients for use around Raglan.

“I don’t think you see them around much – they’re possibly used by bach owners from

out of town,” he said.

Amphibious craft did not have to wait on the tides and would be ideal at the likes of Lorenzen Bay, where they could launch any time, he added.

A Sealegs craft was given a dummy run here recently ahead of the demo day, George said, and they had “a great time”.

I have an automotive background with Audi in South Africa and for the past 18 years I have been sailing around the world and have specialised in Marine Engineering in the superyacht industry.

In that line of work you learn very quickly how to become selfsufficient, you don’t get any backup when you are mid Atlantic, when

something goes wrong.

I feel that Raglan has a need for a local boat technician as there are quite a few locals with boats and being able to offer an alternative to having to take your boat to Hamilton, would be quite valuable.

I offer a mobile marine repair service and I have a workshop in my garage.

The service I can provide includes outboard engine and inboard diesel repairs and servicing, marine electrical repairs and installations and any general boat repairs. You can also call me if you need any rope work done, splicing of mooring and dock lines, anchor warps and trailer winch lines.

In the near future I would like to purchase diagnostic software, so I will be able to plug into modern engines.

The Sports Project: Interviewing top sportspeople in our community

F

ollowing a soy latte at a Raglan cafe, Raglan personal trainer Tom Wellby, described his first introduction to competitive sports. “The school housemaster used to ride a bike every Sunday to get the paper and I used to time him,” Wellby said. “One day, he turned around to me and said: you reckon you could beat me?” As a 12 year old boy, he did not realize this moment would change his life.

The highly respected fitness pro jumped into the sports industry about 25 years ago and never looked back.

He helped supervise a gym at age 15.

He performed countless marathons and triathlons, and he biked enough miles to circle the earth during his years as a professional cyclist. He graduated with a sports science degree from Brunel University in the UK. These days, he encourages clients to view workouts as appointments that can’t be missed. He thinks of food as fuel. He does not rest.

The Raglan based personal trainer, 38, started his own fitness studio at Whale Bay about 3 years ago. The lineup of clients includes people from all walks of life, as well as national athletes. Wellby is widely recognized in Raglan, and all over the world, for his expertise in strength training, and his commitment to implementing innovative fitness techniques. He emphasizes training that can be transferred from the fitness studio to daily life. “Raglan is like an amazing playground,” he said. “And people don’t use it enough.”

He has a vision of finding simple, fun ways to inspire and motivate people to get fit and healthy. “The key to staying fit is to mix it up constantly.

Strike a balance between resistance training, high intensity intervals, longer duration cardiovascular work, and flexibility. And don’t forget about nutrition.”

The fitness expert emphasizes that making the right choices at the dinner table plays a big role in feeling your best. “Nutrition is a big part of fitness and key to a lot of people’s problems,’ he stated. “Being healthy is not just about working out but by creating a

healthy lifestyle all around.”

As a vegetarian of 2 years and plant b a s e d (vegan) for the past year, Wellby has been focusing more on nutrition, “Vegetables and fruits are a daily must… stay away from processed foods, refined carbs and sugars.” He underscored that managing stress and getting enough sleep are also important for being lean and healthy. “I practice what I preach so I know what works.”

When Wellby moved to Raglan about 5 years ago, he developed a fascination for surfing specific training exercises. “I embrace this new sport…

I watch and learn,” he explained. “I observe the guys in the water, analyze their body movements and then I break it down to get a better understanding about all the muscles involved.”

Wellby reckons that all surfers have a muscle imbalance, usually overactive back muscles (especially lower back), and they need to complement this imbalance by building strong core muscles. “This balance is critical for a surfer to get into peak condition and also to prevent injuries…The first thing to do is to determine the imbalance so it can be corrected.”

He said he can help any surfer, no matter the level, improve surfing capabilities by getting their body balanced. “This will provide the foundation for adding speed and power.”

The whale bay fitness expert will be going back to university this year to advance his knowledge, specializing in nutrition. His next goal is to offer his clients a truly holistic approach, incorporating all aspects of a healthy lifestyle.

Wellby is grateful to the numerous masters he ran across on his path. “I am so incredibly lucky that I met the right people at the right time. It was the obvious choice to go into this world.“ Charlotte Marten

I came to Raglan through surfing as a teenager and settled here a few years later.

I've lived in houses all over Raglan. We built the house we live in now 24 years ago - and I'm still finishing it!
