To the Editor, I know there are major issues with any mention of reclamation for parking close to the wharf. As adjacent Hawk Eye, I have to say there has been good behaviour, sensitivity, care and good will exercised here this year. Boaties need to stop fellow fish heads from walking backwards behind reversing trailers, especially on the blind side!

There were about ten near misses over the past few weeks when lots of boats were about.

A huge help would be the concreting of the papa shelf to the already existing slipway east of wharf, so several boats could be launched or retrieved at the same time. Displacement of about 100 little crabs and the same number of rock borers would probably be the cost. But I stand to be corrected as site is muddy and unsafe to walk on.

But such a concrete addition could be a constructive move way to aid boaties.

Defence Force helicopter drops in to find the locals friendly

Raglan Childcare teachers took their younger Iti Kahurangi children to visit the Super Seasprite while it awaited repairs at Raglan airfield last Wednesday.

T

he Air Force - or was it the Navy - dropped in on Raglan unexpectedly last week, arousing plenty of interest from locals intrigued at why a hi-tech helicopter had parked up at the end of their airfield.

The arrival last Wednesday of the Super Seasprite, which had the word “Navy” printed on its fuselage, sparked speculation it could be here to assist with any belated action police might be contemplating over the protest yacht Vega’s deliberate flouting of the Government’s so-called Anadarko amendment creating a no-go area around offshore drilling.

But it seems it was nothing so dramatic – the Defence Force says it was minor technical malfunction that forced the helicopter, which was from the RNZAF’s

No 6 squadron at Whenuapai, to divert to Raglan while on its way to the Ohakea air base.

The problem required maintenance support from Whenuapai before the chopper was able to return safely to Whenuapai the next day – but not before aircraft captain Alex Trotter, a navy lieutenant, and his crew enjoyed what he described as “the unexpected engagement” with the locals.

“The Raglan community was extremely supportive of our visit,” he said. “Many locals came down to the airfield to look around the aircraft and engage with the crew about the helicopter and their role in the Defence Force, as well as offering tea, coffee and even a few ideas on how to conduct repairs!

“Overall, thanks to the Raglan community - it was a fantastic experience.”

He added the crew hoped “to get down there again soon”, though how that

might happen barring another technical malfunction was not clear.

As to the confusion over whether it was an Air Force or Navy helicopter, a Defence Force spokesperson explained the No 6 squadron is an RNZAF one whose job is to operate the Navy’s air element of five Seasprites. The pilots and airborne tactical officers are all Navy, the helicopter crew are drawn from both the Navy and Air Force, and the helicopters are serviced and maintained by the Air Force.

The five SH-2Gs – which reportedly cost New Zealand about $300 million all-up – are described by Wikipedia as operating from the Navy’s two Anzac class frigates, two Protector class offshore patrol vessels (one of which stirred a lot of interest when it anchored close off the Raglan coastline a year or so ago) and the multi-role vessel HMNZS Canterbury.

Piping upgraded after sewage floods house right royal stink has seen a A short section of Nihinihi Avenue closed off to traffic recently while Waikato District Council upgrades and relocates wastewater piping in the area.

The fuss began on September 13 when the wastewater network could not cope with heavy rain and sewage poured into the lower floor of an architecturally designed house on the Nihinihi Avenue/Tahuna Avenue corner.

The council has revealed – in a report to the Raglan Community Board – that the owners have had to leave the house and stay in alternative accommodation until the work is completed.

It’s understood the owners, a couple with a child who relocated here only recently from Auckland, have been very distressed by the incident and the damage to their new home.

The council said in its report that both the property owners’ and its own insurers were “working on a resolution” -- and it’s

While the report did not detail why the wastewater network failed to cope, council watchdog John Lawson – who used to live in the immediate vicinity -- has suggested the problem is the result of the council putting a 600mm culvert into a 400mm one when it undergrounded a stream in the area.

Residents have long complained of the smells from the pumping station on the Nihinihi Avenue/Marine Parade corner, and shortly after Hamilton’s prominent Perry family built a beachhouse there their tennis court had to be dug up so the council could access pipes running underneath. E Symes

A “goodwill” contribution to the tune of $12,400 for materials has transformed Xtreme Waste’s processing room into the pristine, dairy factory-like environment Raglan can now feel proud of.

Gone is the “grotty” look, says operations manager Gavin Melgren who believes the upgrade – financed by dairy giant Fonterra

– will lift the perception of the recycling and transfer station’s value in the marketplace.

“We did all the work ourselves,” he told the Chronicle last week, pointing out the new roll-on/rolloff wool bales from which plastics and glass are sorted into different categories for recycling.

A new steel trough along with the processing room’s extended concrete floor, its walls and

machines are scrubbed down weekly, he adds, to ensure the hygienic recycling environment Xtreme Waste has now achieved with the back-up of Fonterra’s sustainable department.

It was a case of “like minds meet”, Gavin says of Fonterra’s goodwill gesture. “They’re all greenies and can see we’re doing a good job and want to get behind us.” Edith Symes

Christmas in the Park this Sunday his Sunday, 8th December, T Raglan's Christmas in the Park will be held at the Te Kopua Domain.

This year will feature mostly local acts including items from all the local schools and Raglan's very

own band The Kryptonites.

The programme will kick off from 5pm with children's activities and entertainment, including some carnival rides which will incur a small cost, so come prepared. Of course, we are expecting Santa to pop in at some stage during the

early part of the evening. Bring your picnic, some warm clothing, and enjoy a family night out.

The evening will conclude around 9pm after some carols.

Still, that’s no surprise when you consider she was doing her rural and Te Hutewai mail and passenger runs back in the 1950s and ‘60s – and that she turns 99 in a fortnight.

“It was because of my eyesight,” she said of her grounding as she talked with the Chronicle last weekend at the Gilmour Street home she’s lived in over the 30 years since husband Archie died.

The couple married in Raglan at St Peter’s Anglican Church more than 70 years ago when Robertsons’ Motor Transport – the service started up by Archie’s father before World War I – began the area’s coach services which later included mail and school runs around town and out to Whale Bay. Myrle and Archie naturally enough lived in Robertson Road, where the family farmed decades before Flax Cove subdivision was developed.

And Myrle herself became – according to R T Vernon’s history of Raglan -- a “popular driver” on the local bus runs. She herself recalls driving the nine-seater minibus, fondly called ‘the pup’, when the last two of her four children were still going to Raglan Area School.

“It got me out of the house,” she says.

Later she progressed to a 14-seater although “I wasn’t supposed to drive over a certain weight”, she confesses.

Australian-born Myrle had met Archie when he was doing his father’s Rotorua-Waitomo coach run and she was working in the hotel at Waitomo.

She never returned to Australia, except on holiday, and says she’s never had any grumbles during her long life in Raglan – except for the time she protested good-naturedly about her wages when Archie was the manager of Robertsons.

“Why do I get such lousy pay when I’m doing a man’s work?” she recalls asking. But he reckoned, well, it was all going back into their livelihood.

The business had six buses in its heyday, recalls Myrle, who’s only recently lost track of a 1919 wage book from Archie’s father’s accountant in town. Robertsons sold out to M Pavlovich and Son in 1966 after nearly 50 years of service to Raglan which included the start of the first commuter bus to Hamilton.

Myrle Robertson Now the Robertson family from near and far – including Myrle’s son Denny in Hills Road – are gearing up for their mother’s 100th birthday celebration in town this time next year. Myrle has 10 grandchildren but has lost count of the great and great-great grandchildren. “I’d have to add them up.”

She has no idea of the secret to longevity, having given up smoking many years ago but still enjoying the odd tipple that’s “more ginger ale than gin”.

Myrle’s got a way to go however before matching the record of her sister in Sydney, who will be 103 next March. She visited her a few years ago on a trip home to Australia.

While her sister is in a resthome, Myrle manages just fine by herself in her own home. And no, she doesn’t get lonely – three “girls” come every Friday to play cards, then there’s 500 to look forward to at Raglan Club come Monday afternoons.

She has some home help midweek, still enjoys her cane craftwork and in between “I twiddle my thumbs”, she quips.

Of course Raglan’s not quite the same now Myrle prefers to stay home. “I don’t know a soul and I used to know everyone.”

But she makes a point of regularly going downtown for Raglan’s New Year’s Eve parade, and says she has watched with interest as the town has developed.

So much has changed since she belonged to the likes of the Caledonian Society – which is now making something of a comeback as Raglan Pipe Band – and played tennis at the three courts on Wainui Road, where the fire station is now.

The weather gods shone on the Raglan Sport Fishing Club for the recent annual Fish City Icebreaker fishing competition.

The radio installed on Mt Karioi by the Kawhia Boating and Angling Club and the Raglan Sport Fishing Club was running hot. We had over 190 anglers fishing the contest.

Where in the world can you catch fish like you can off Raglan?

Even the 7th place snapper was over 7kg. The work done by the club in fisheries management with MPI and the innovative work that Whaingaroa Harbour Care have undertaken means that the fishery off Raglan is leading the world. The club thanks all involved in making the Raglan Harbour fish nursery productive.

anglers aware of the correct handling of fish for release and a Black Magic towel was provided to all teams for use in releasing of fish.

RSA eyes range of Anzac events The army’s 161 battery – “adopted” by Raglan during the Vietnam War – is set to visit here next April not just for the town’s traditional Anzac Day parade and ceremony but also a series of other communitybased activities stretching over a week.

The extended visit by the Lintonbased battery will be a highlight of Raglan Returned and Services Association commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, and the soldiers’ activities in the lead-up to Anzac Day could range from an open day at the area school, a rugby match against a local “selection” and other public events through to a military exercise in a nearby rural area.

As it will also be 50 years since it was given freedom of the town, the battery is expected to want to march through Raglan renewing that “right”.

activities were revealed at a meeting this week of the Raglan Community Board, which granted the local RSA $1500 to help cover the cost of Anzac Day commemorations.

The RSA had originally asked for $2000, but told Tuesday night’s board meeting it now needed less as a related World War I exhibition that was to have opened at Raglan museum on April 26 – the day after Anzac Day – had been delayed.

The extra $500 was to have helped pay for an associated afternoon tea the RSA had eyed holding at the nearby fire station.

At Tuesday’s meeting the board also made a second grant from its discretionary fund – this time of $2000 – to help keep Raglan Community Radio in the black.

The grant, which is tagged to cover rent and administration costs, follows a presentation in which station manager Aaron Mooar revealed the local community broadcaster had been caught out by recent changes in lotteries funding.

Always been passionate about music, but never been a real musician as such.

So I found my place as a DJ where I could support the industry from researching/ buying music and putting it together in a DJ set which I could then share with the people..

Different types of music for different types of gigs, I like to keep my music cart quite wide.

How would you describe the music you play?

Bassculture. I really love a warm bass line with conscious messages.. I started out collecting 7' records of Jamaican reggae after spending some time working in the Carribean, Do you come from a musical family?

No, I come from generations of farmers, the only sound in the family home was talk back and sports radio, haha.

Describe a typical day ?

I live a pretty busy and colourful life I guess, a total mix of family time, business, music and nature.

I run my kayaking business in the day time and dj most nights of the weekend which can be a bit challenging at times but I love both worlds.

What in your memory is your best gig ever that you played?

I've supported some big names over the years and played at some amazing venues and festivals but to be honest some of my favourite vibes have been here at the Raglan Sunday Sessions.

What in your memory is the best gig or event you attended?

One that really stands out for me is a crew called The Cuban Brothers at Splore, these guys were so entertaining a mix of DJing, MC'ing, dance and visual effects with a full twist of humour.

What is your latest project?

I'm actually really excited about a new project called 'Blue Sapphire ElectroSwing Collective'. It consists of heavy vintage dancefloor tunes, live vocals, sax and sassy burlesque entertainment. This project has been in the making for a little while now and has just started to gain interest for the up and coming festival season. The kind of night out I would want to be treated with - so hey watch this space.

Saturday marked the last day of the 30 day worldwide Movember - a month long moustache growing event to raise awareness for Men's health.

Held at the Yot club, the 'Mo Bros' converged with the top Mo's judged by the crowd.

Fireworks a 'no show' this year The Raglan community’s annual fireworks display has been snuffed out due to funding issues.

Locals may remember the display was under threat last year when WEL Networks withdrew funding at the last minute. Luckily the Raglan Chamber of Commerce stepped up and rallied the business community into action, eventually

securing the $6k required, to ensure the event could go ahead.

The Raglan Cultural and Events Trust has traditionally secured a license to run the event, which was funded by WEL Networks for several years.

Trust spokesperson, Peter Storey, told the Chronicle this week that “WEL’s focus has shifted from funding community events to assisting businesses.”

According to Mr Storey, locals may have to wait another 12 months, before the night skies around Raglan can be lit up with a professionally run fireworks display, “ in the unlikely event that a new benefactor comes forward within the next week or two, the best the community can hope for is to look at addressing this funding issue in time for next years event”.

Area Fishing Report: by the Raglan Wharf Seagull

Really good coastal sea and weather conditions, combined with plenty of snapper, trevally, kahawai and gurnard on the bite, saw many fisherman have the excitement of catching good quantities. Heaps of boats coming into Raglan each day, and congestion at each of the three boat ramps. I think the petrol station must have done very well topping up the petrol tanks.

Fishing started a few weeks ago at 50m and beyond but is now in much closer. Seeing the Kawhia charter boat off the northern end of Ruapuke beach in about 30m of water, and the fish sounder showing good signs around the back of the mountain in the same depth, shows that the fish are moving in closer.

Our local charter boats have been doing very well, many days coming in early because they have their limit. It is the way to go if you do not have a boat and you want a share of the fishing activity. Meet up with other fishing enthusiasts, and these charter skippers all treat you very well on your big day out.

Sea water temperatures are up to 19.5 degrees in places. All the Raglan harbour navigation

lights are working and the Raglan Bar is on the leads. Be sure to use the white sector light when crossing the Bar both ways.

Albacore have been reported off the Kaipara entrance and will be down this way by Christmas.

That probably includes skippies and marlin. Game fishing season is about to begin off our coast, so it's time to check all your game fishing tackle.

Water clarity at 50m plus has been amazing, you can see your catch coming up from a long way down, plus all the micro krill, translucent creatures of all shapes, sizes and colours floating by and various jelly fish too.

Always interesting what you see.

Numbers of crayfish are being caught by pots and divers.

Certainly on Reef 21 good crayfish have been brought aboard, with the added benefit of staying in that area and tagging kingfish. A reported 20kg kingfish was caught there two weekends ago.

Snapper off Raglan are onto baits; fresh is best with sharp hooks. We have hooks bent and one hook broken, such is the power of the snappers jaw.

I have not been harbour

fishing but yellow bellied flounder are in abundance. With water temperatures rising the stingrays will soon be prevalent in the shallows.

It was interesting listening to Mark Hartstone’s talk at the Raglan Club Inc a week ago, a lifetime experience of commercial fishing off our west coast.

Gals n Gurnard is back with us from January 6th to 11th.

Briefing is on Sunday 5th, prize giving and the main event is the evening of Saturday 11th.

The weigh station at the Raglan Club Inc is fully reactivated now with a team of new weigh masters available to the club or to weigh your catch. So far they have enjoyed their new responsibility.

Japanese 'rock and roll band' set for Yot Club debut

Arguably Japan's greatest 'rock and roll' band, 'Guitar Wolf', will play their first ever Raglan show on Saturday 14th December at the Yot Club.

The Guitar Wolf experience is nothing short of wild. When they appeared on the scene in the late 80s brandishing their lo-fi, ear damaging rock n’ roll, the trio quickly became cult icons. Dressed to the nines in black leather and dark sunglasses, they looked more like a gang.

Guitar Wolf’s unapologetic approach to recording albums became notorious among fans of underground garage rock, and their records quickly became highly collectible. While all this may sound negative, their live show is anything but with their style of abstract noise, screaming punk, and a tinge of sludge thrown in just for added texture. These guys have been delivering the goods for some time now. A solid band, with much to offer.

If you have never seen a Guitar Wolf show before, you probably should add that to your list of things to do before you die. There is nothing else like it – but just remember to take your earplugs because your hearing will never be the same again.

Many other bands have tried the drunk-punk approach to music and have come off as dismal failures. Somehow these rockers have managed to live and breathe their music for over 20 years now, but they won’t be hanging up the leather jackets and taking off their sunglasses anytime soon – and thank god for that. Guitar Wolf are the real deal, you can’t help but love the passion, heart, and soul that they put into their music and their live show.

H – Harvest zucchini, potatoes, peas, beans, strawberries, lettuce, beetroot, spinach and silverbeet.

Pick flowers for display and remove dead heads from roses, marigolds and dahlias. Many vegetables will give continuous cropping when early picked, eg: cucumbers, zucchini and strawberries. Dig your potatoes after flowering, even lifting them early, then dry under cover and store in a dark corner. Leaving them in the ground if it’s really damp brings on all sorts of disease, potato blight, or moths and nematodes in the tuber.

You can continue to plant seeds that like warm soils, eg carrots, parsnip, butternuts, buttercups, more potatoes, tomatoes and all the herbs basil, coriander, parsley, chives. Try lettuce plants in partial shade. Cut cucumber runners, pinch the laterals on tomatoes at the leaf node and lift kumara foliage to stop it rooting down into the soil. Think ahead to the autumn and winter seasons, and start seeds of leeks, brassicas, stock, polyanthus, violas and pansies. These are all easy to germinate. Some raised garden beds I have seen have been over planted. As plants mature there is competition for space, for water, for food. A crowded house never works; each plant when it develops likes it space. Stressed plants attract disease, viruses and bugs, healthy plants do not. Pull them out before they affect others. Spray in the late evening when the bees are in bed.

Our new moon is on the 3rd with the full moon on the 17th. Seed planting is best done from the 6th to the 16th and root crops - carrots, parsnips, more spuds - from 20th to 22nd and 27th to 29th. We could pass on that because of the festive season! Handy also to cut lawns a bit higher to stop them drying out.

Hot planting for this month would be ‘Betternut’ – a yellow, pear shaped butternut pumpkin. It takes 14 weeks from when the seed germinates. Flesh is deep orange, firm, sweet and dry but is not a long term keeper.

Sunflower seeds should be powering up; they grow fast after rain and need a stake for support. When in flower, notice how the flower follows the sun during the day.

We are a roofing company covering residential, commercial, and education buildings. Some of our recent projects include Wintec Tades and Services Building, HGHS performing arts and school hall, Karapiro Events Center and many residential projects throughout the Waikato.

WTC Roofing employs some local Raglan labour and has been involved in local projects such as reroofing the town hall, and donating the roofing materials to the recently built surf club lookout tower.

The lunch is intended for people who are alone on Christmas Day,under-resourced families and backpackers.Catering will be for the first 75 people booked in.
