Double-Crown for Raglan Bowlers Raglan Outdoor Bowlers were rewarded plentifully recently when the two mixed teams of seven players each won their respective divisions in the Waikato Interclub Tournament – a competition fiercely competed for by bowlers throughout the Waikato region.

“Selecting teams to get the right combinations of players together isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, but our thinking paid off with two wonderful wins. We couldn’t have wished for a better outcome”, Terry says.

A feature of this year’s selection was the inclusion of student bowlers in the squad.

“We’re about getting these young bowlers to experience all sorts of different bowling situations. I was tremendously proud of the way they conducted themselves.”

With less than a month to the end of the year, the Raglan New Years Fireworks Display was in serious jeopardy.

still struggling, they were happy to contribute to an event which brings the community together and provides a spectacular yet controlled and safe display.

The Chamber will collect and invoice all donations from businesses or individuals. However chairperson Stephanie Philp stresses that they do not intend to take over the role of the Cultural and Events Trust in future years. “This is a one-off,” she said. “We didn’t want the community to suffer because funding wasn’t available. The event has become an integral part of the Christmas/New Year festivities for families in Raglan, so we stepped in to see if we could turn things around and get the fireworks display off the ground!

We commend our local businesses for supporting the community in this way.”

As at Friday 30 November, the Raglan Chamber had $4000 in pledges.

There’s still a way to go to achieve the $6000 needed to ensure the magnificent displays that the Cultural and Events Trust have achieved in previous years.

For the last few years WEL Networks have funded the fireworks display in association with the Raglan Cultural and Events Trust. However at the last minute the Trust was advised that WEL no longer wishes to be involved in this type of community event. This left little time to find other funding sources according to Peter Storey of the RCET. The fireworks display, ignited from Te Kopua beach, has contributed to a relaxed family atmosphere in the town for the last few years with many people staying up to enjoy the midnight display that signifies the start of the New Year.

Mr Storey advised Raglan Chamber that $6000 was needed if the display was to go ahead as planned. The pyrotechnics expert had to apply for and obtain a safety permit costing $400 by Friday 30 November. While Mr Storey was prepared to subsidise this to meet the deadline, the funds for the fireworks Caring for the ones you love still needed to come from somewhere.

Raglan looks to be stuck - quite possibly in more ways than one - with its botched downtown reseal job for the summer.

Waikato District Council’s roading and transport committee voted unanimously on Tuesday for a resolution that effectively rules out asphalting the CBD stretch of Bow Street until February at the earliest.

The committee decided that staff should monitor and maintain the existing chip surface through to the end of January, then report back to its February meeting on the condition of the reseal and the “remedial options”.

But the committee also agreed that $150,000 should be earmarked from within existing council budgets for an “asphalt solution” in the event the road surface remained unacceptable in February.

Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley, who sat in on Tuesday’s meeting, supported the wait-and-see decision.

“If the road’s maintained, kept dusted and brushed, then the February option is probably better than rushing in now,” he told the meeting.

“If council were to go in now [with a quick-fix] it would raise other issues ... the town is starting to fill up now.”

However he earlier castigated council staff for “putting that sort of chip down in a destination town”, and said it defied logic that Bow Street was so rough when nearby streets like Bankart Street had smooth surfaces as a result of recent upgrades.

He also called on the council to make sure in future that things were done right the first time.

Council general manager roading and projects Ian Gooden surprised councillors by indicating there was time for an asphalt reseal of Bow Street before Christmas, but emphasised it was not the full answer and a full reconstruction of the downtown stretch was looming in 5-7 years.

He also pointed out that the previous surface in Bow Street was a chip seal, and that the new seal would “do the same [become smooth] but it will take some time”.

Committee chairman Noel Smith talked of balancing a “political” decision against one representing best use of ratepayers’ money.

Barry Ashby, representing the Raglan Community Board, told committee members many people had contacted him over the “hell of a mess” and said the local Chamber of Commerce was “hugely concerned”.

“None of you would accept it in your own backyards,” he told councillors.

However councillors in the end agreed with professional advice that a reseal now would not be a “good asset value decision” and plumped for the waitand-see approach.

Light Exercise Group settles into new home

Spokesperson Graham Hubert wasn’t surprised to see nearly 30 members there to try on the new space for size, saying the group has been in high spirits since learning some weeks ago that they had a long-term and ‘very suitable’ base to operate from.

“We’re settling in nicely. There’s still a little sorting out of some equipment but all in all the transition from our old home in the Gospel Church Hall to here has gone very well, thanks to the help of so many in our community - it’s about the Raglan family spirit coming through again”, says Graham.

It was in fact only a matter of a few days following the Chronicle publishing news that the group would be relocating when they were approached by St Peter’s Church vestry members offering the group long-term use of their hall in Bow Street.

New site manager and services at Xtreme Waste If you’ve been up to the Raglan Recycling Centre lately, you will have noticed some remarkable changes.

Expanded operations, new staff, better product presentation, and clearer pricing are just a few of the elements of what executive team leader Jacqui Forbes describes as “a logical evolution of some core areas of the site, aimed at making items easier to find, and making shopping up here a more enjoyable experience.”

Much of the recent change has been driven by new site manager Gavin Melgren, a well known Raglanite, who grew up working for his family’s rubbish disposal business in Hamilton.

Says Melgren, “It has been really interesting taking on this challenge, considering that when I began in this business nearly 45 years ago, the goal was all about filling holes in the ground. Our aims up here are completely the opposite, with the goal of Zero Waste to landfill forcing a 180 degree change in approach.”

Wood yard manager, Donald Tweedie is another new staff member, who brings a huge range of practical skills, to help customers with small alterations and repairs to any products sold. “I get a buzz realising the potential for the things we save,” says Tweedie.

“Often a window or door-frame needs a tiny bit of bog, or some planing here and there, to make it work 100%.

Re-using items is even better than recycling, so when someone heads home with a rescued window that works properly, I feel good, knowing we’ve done our job, and given that person a great deal,” he says Says Forbes, “We feel we have got a pretty good handle on the recycling aspect of things, so we’re now putting

more emphasis on re-using items, wherever possible,” “We do this in partnership with the community, who generously donate items for sale. Last week someone dropped off a ride-on mower, which we are selling for about ½ the Trade Me price, and this is becoming a common type of occurrence. Being non-profit, we can pass these great deals on,” she added.

Despite the impressive site improvements, traditionally low prices haven’t changed, nor has the commitment to community well-being, from Raglan’s ground-breaking, waste management experts.

Ex-serviceman and night owl, Don Sutton is known for the countless hours he donates to our community as a volunteer, and last Monday he received recognition for his role as Raglan’s firearms licensing vetter for the New Zealand Police.

At a quiet ceremony, Don was presented with a District Commander’s Commendation signed by the Waikato Area Commander in recognition of the expertise and services he has provided to the NZ Police over the past six years.

“I’m a bit sorry,” said Don about his departure from the position, “It was by my own choice but I will miss it.”

As the license vetter, he has been conducting security checks and generally looking after the licensing process for Raglan firearms owners. A role he describes as being “ very quiet” during his tenure.

Waikato District Firearms Officer Richard Plas, who presented the award to Don along with acting sergeant Andrew Mortimer, commended Don’s “ongoing loyalty and excellent service.”

With a combined nine years of service to both the NZ Army and Navy

as well, Don’s expertise on firearms and his knowledge of the Raglan community was a priceless asset to the Raglan Station.

“Having somebody like Don, there’s no second guessing. We always knew that he would make a sound decision,’ said Raglan Constable Dean McMillan.

Previously the Community House Chairman, Don was also instrumental in facilitating the partnerships that supported the Helping Hands Community Trust Van for health/ medical transport and is an honoured member of the Raglan Lions Club.

While officially retired, Donald is a busy man with the slew of volunteer roles he has on the go. Retiring as the license vetter, Don still has his hands full, continuing his role as patrol chairman for the Raglan Night Owls.

“I’m sure that more people will join our classes each week. The great thing about the sessions is that the programme caters for all ages and abilities and the social side is really important too”, Julie says.

Classes on Monday and Thursday, from 10 am to 11 am are a mix of ‘work-out’, using a variety of gym equipment the group has bought over the years, to stretches and flexibility work, using swiss balls and stretching bands. Wednesday’s class at 1.30 pm for an hour is more intensive.

“I’ve tried to pitch the exercises and activities so that everyone gains benefit. We have some members who have been coming along for years and they wouldn’t be without their workouts – it has made a significant and positive difference to their wellbeing.”

First-timers simply need to turn up at the hall, located above and behind St Peters Church, wearing clothing that allows for easy movement, pay $3 for each session they join in and give it a go. You will be made to feel very welcome. Sue Russell

Decade worth of collected artwork on show at Studeo Gallery A multi talented man, Marten ten Broek could garner attention for a number of different reasons but it was his art that caught the eye of Anaru Wilson.

Amassing a large collection of Marten’s work over the last decade, next Friday these special pieces come out of storage to be shared with the rest of us at the RETROSPECTACULAR exhibition at Studeo Gallery.

“I first saw Marten’s work at Rocket Café in Hamilton, way back when and its genius just blew me away,” said Anaru.

At the time, Anaru himself had just been appointed Creative Director of Hawai’i-based surf brand T&C. “Personally I’d just taken a big leap with my own career and creative work. I was traveling all over the world, seeing the latest and greatest representations of the ‘cool’ but here at home was something completely fresh and inspiringly original. For the first time ever I had some money so I bought the piece. It turned into a bit of a pattern.”

Having shifted the collection from the wharf just days before the inferno, Anaru is stoked to be able to finally see, and show, all of the collection in a gallery environment.

All of the pieces are one off originals with the gallery room full of paintings, a second room has been dedicated to drawings

and one off prints.

“It’s great what the crew are doing down at Studeo, I’m really happy to have the exhibition in a space that embodies Ragtown, who we are and what we’re about.”

Of the intentions for the show, Anaru says “ Both Marten and I want this work to be accessible to everyone, so we’re pricing things accordingly. These works are full of wonder; they really carry a lot of mana. Everyone should be able to own art that encourages them to look differently at the world, it’s about possibility and widening our own perspectives.”

The show will be open from

4:30 to 5:30pm with ‘first dibs for the kids.” Those under 21 years can buy drawings and prints for half price and for those under 16 years, prices will be quarter price.

The main event will begin after that.
