Irish musicians wow a packed town hall

T

hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  something  about  Irish  music  that  seems  to  really  strike  a  chord  in  Raglan. Â

Irish vocalist Pauline Scanlon and accompanying trio, Keeva warmup before their 'sellout' show in the Raglan Town Hall towards  midnight.   He  reckoned  the  Irish  musicians  were  â&#x20AC;&#x153;blown  away  by  their  reception  hereâ&#x20AC;?.

There  was  also  a  poignant  moment  when  WKH EDQG OXUHG XS RQ VWDJH IRU WKHLU ÂżQDO song  the  grandson  of  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Green  Fire  Islandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  creative  director  and  producer  Bronwen  Christianos.   Earlier  in  the  show  a  surprised  Bronwen  had  been  presented  a  bouquet  of  Ă&#x20AC;RZHUV WR PDUN KHU WK ELUWKGD\ WKDW GD\ â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Green  Fire  Islandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;,  after  its  premiere  in  Raglan,  was  performed  in  Wellington,  New  Plymouth  (Womad)  and  Auckland  and  then  in  2012  was  taken  abroad  for  performances  in  Ireland  and  London.

While  the  main  purpose  of  the  current  Irish  musicians  visit  was  to  collaborate  with  Trinity  Roots  on  a  project  to  â&#x20AC;&#x153;combine  the  traditional  music  of  Ireland  and  New Â

aglanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  desire  for  a  heated  swimming  pool  will  be  one  of  the  ¿YH SULRULWLHV WKDW ZLOO EH SXW IRUZDUG to  the  Waikato  District  Council  to  be  considered  for  inclusion  in  its  Long-­ Term  Plan  for  2015-­25.

The  Raglan  Community  Boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  recent  survey  of  households  showed  that  Raglan  residentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  top  priority  was  the  continued  development  of  footpaths,  followed  by  a  heated  swimming  pool,  more  parking  in  the  centre  of  town,  a  new  footpath  between  Manu  and  Whale  Bays  and  an  increased  bus  service  to  Hamilton.

Also  highly  rated  were  the  development  of  the  Wi  Neera  Street  Reserve,  minor  works,  changes  to  Cliff  Street,  renovatation  of  the  Town  Hall,  development  of   Wainui  Reserve  and  of  Lorenzen  Bay  Esplanade,  the  Main  Road  entrance  to  Raglan  and  WiFi  capability  throughout  the  town  centre.  The  board  discussed  all  the  priorities  at  a  separate  workshop  before  the  boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  public  meeting  on  Tuesday.

At  the  meeting,  board  member  Boyde  Dixon  asked  Councillor  Clint  Baddeley  how  much  the  two  Bankart  Street  roundabouts  had  cost,  suggesting  that  the  $5  million  it  would  cost  for  a  heated  swimming  pool  was  a  better  use  of  council  money  than  these  roading  developments. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How  much  did  those  roundabouts Â

cost?  A  couple  of  million  [dollars]?  They  RQO\ EHQHÂżW WKH WUXFN GULYHUV $ VZLPPLQJ SRRO EHQHÂżWV HYHU\RQH ´ KH VDLG %R\GH VDLG WKH VRFFHU ÂżHOG DUHD DW WKH Te  Kopua  Domain  was  already  available  as  a  pool  site.  Other  land  that  local  Maori  had  given  to  the  Raglan  Area  School  could  then  be  used  for  soccer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Five  million  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  seem  that  much  to  me.  Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m  sure  thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  some  way  where  council  could  stop  spending  to  make  this  affordable,â&#x20AC;?  he  said.

Acting  chair  Alan  Vink  suggested  the  board  informally  meet  with  the  Raglan  Swimming  Club  to  brainstorm  about  how  to  proceed  with  the  idea.

On  the  parking  issue,  board  member  Matt  Holl  said  the  parking  at  the  wharf  over  summer  was  â&#x20AC;&#x153;embarrassingâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  got  a  problem  with  parking  in  this  town  and  weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  going  to  see  it  again  this  summer,â&#x20AC;?  he  said.

WDCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  Craig  Birkett  presented  a  report  on  the  review  of  the  Public  Places  Bylaw,  which  contained  Raglan  Community  Boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  requested  changes  to  Raglan  parking.

These  included  creating  a  disabled  park  outside  Orca  Restaurant  on  Bow  Street  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  not  outside  the  laundromat  as  had  been  previously  mooted  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  and  replacing  an  existing  boat  trailer  park  at  the  wharf  with  two  15-­minute  angle  parks  and  four Â

Zealand  within  a  modern  musical  contextâ&#x20AC;?,  their  Raglan  gig  on  Friday  night  was  billed  as  one  of  four  intimate  shows  on  their  own  in  the  North  Island.

However  Scanlon  did  refer  to  the  collaboration  with  Trinity  Roots  as  having  been  â&#x20AC;&#x153;very  specialâ&#x20AC;?,  and  local  kaumatua  Sean  Ellison  pointed  out  to  concertgoers  that  an  Irish-­Kiwi  musical  link  was  not  a  new  thing  for  Raglan  and  that  â&#x20AC;&#x153;it  started  here  at  Poihakena  marae  when  the  Irish  arrived  over  for  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Green  Fire  Islandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?.

Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  show  -­-­  presented  by  craft  brewer  Tuatara  -­-­  also  served  as  a  fundraiser  for  the  Raglan  Volunteer  Fire  Brigade  which  with  the  help  of  television  celebrity  chef  Jimmy  Boswell,  a  recent  arrival  in  town,  served  up  what  else  but  Irish  stew  in  the  supper  room  at  $5  a  plate.   Edith  Symes

60-­minute  parking  spaces.   The  board  recognised  parking  was  a  long-­term  issue  that  involved  the  wider  community  so  suggested  looking  at  it  more  fully  next  year,  consultating  with  interested  parties  and  possibly  creating  a  working  party  to  get  the  process  moving.  7KH ERDUG FRQ¿UPHG WKDW D IHDVLELOLW\ study  would  be  done  on  the  Manu  to  Whale  Bay  footpath  priority,  but  noted  that  slips  on  that  road  could  be  a  problem.  Board  member  Jon  Taylor  suggested  that  the  footpath  may  not  need  to  follow  the  road,  which  could  solve  the  problem.   There  was  also  a  lot  a  discussion  about  the  whether  or  not  the  bus  services  between  Hamilton  and  Raglan  needed  to  be  increased,  with  Clint  cautioning  that  WKH ERDUG QHHGHG WR EH VSHFL¿F DERXW ZKHQ the  greater  need  was  so  that  an  increased  service  did  not  result  in  buses  running  half  empty.

The  board  backed  away  from  the  idea  of  hourly  bus  services,  but  supported  an  increase  in  bus  services  to  include  the  reinstatement  of  the  Sunday  bus  service  and  an  increase  in  other  services,  as  deemed  necessary  by  demand.

The  board  planned  to  make  a  submission  to  the  Waikato  Regional  Council  about  this,  attaching  the  community  survey  results  as  supporting  evidence.  Rachel  Benn Â

Back  in  2008  it  was  the  rehearsal  then  premiere  of  the  Celtic-­Kiwi  collaboration  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Green  Fire  Islandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  which  packed  them  in  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  and  then  last  Friday  night  it  was  again  a  full  house  at  the  Raglan  Town  Hall  as  three  of  Irelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  most  celebrated  Celtic  musicians,  with  the  help  of  an  Irish-­born  Kiwi  guitarist,  played  a  gig  of  their  North  Island  tour  here.

An  eclectic  mix  of  locals  and  some  out-­of-­towners  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  50  tickets  were  bought  RQOLQH WKURXJK (YHQWÂżQGD Âą GHOLJKWHG over  the  two  and  a  half  hour  show  to  the  alternately  fragile  and  steely  voice  of  Pauline  Scanlon  and  the  instrumental  skills  of  her  accompanying  trio,  Keeva.

Billed  as  a  concert  â&#x20AC;&#x153;from  Carnegie  Hall  to  the  Raglan  Town  Hallâ&#x20AC;?,  in  recognition  of  the  West  Kerry  songstressâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  appearance  at  the  New  York  institution  recognised  as  one  of  the  most  prestigious  music  venues  in  the  world,  the  performance  ran  the  gamut  from  traditional  and  contemporary  Irish  numbers  through  to  English,  Breton  and  American  folk  songs.

Flanking  Scanlon  on  stage  were  Dubliner  Alan  Doherty  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  former  front  man  RI WKH ,ULVK EDQG *UDGD DQG WKH Ă&#x20AC;XWH VRORLVW on  the  â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lord  of  the  Ringsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  soundtrack  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  :HVW &ODUH FRPSRVHU DQG VHVVLRQ ÂżGGOHU Tola  Crusty  and  Irish-­born  Lower  Hutt  guitarist  Gerry  Paul,  who  has  toured  the  world  with  various  of  his  folk  heroes.

The  performers  sipped  from  their  tour  sponsorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  beers  between  songs,  with  the  irrepressible  Doherty  promising  it  would  both  make  them  play  better  and  make  people  in  the  audience  look  better  as  the  evening  went  along.   Whatever  the  cause  the  audience  got  increasingly  into  the  spirit,  delighting  local  promoter  Tom  McCormick  as  â&#x20AC;&#x153;the  whole  hall  went  nuts  with  everyone  dancingâ&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;very  differentâ&#x20AC;?  life  to  that  of  the  real  world,  they  say,  but  for  them  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  one  way  to  travel  in  luxury  while  getting  paid  for  the  privilege.  And  theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re  hooked.

Yjosine  traded  the  security  of  her  local  MRE LQ UHDO HVWDWH IRU D Ă&#x20AC;LJKW HDUO\ WKLV \HDU WR Egypt  from  where  she  boarded  a  62-­metre  superyacht  for  the  start  of  her  big  OE.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve  always  loved  the  ocean  and  wanted  to  see  the  world,â&#x20AC;?  she  explains.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;And  I  was  brought  up  on  boats  when  I  was  little.â&#x20AC;?

As  a  stewardess,  the  23-­year-­old  says  she  was  run  off  her  feet  at  dinners  and  cocktail  parties  for  up  to  40  guests  while  VDLOLQJ LQ WKH 0HGLWHUUDQHDQ IRU ¿YH DQG a-­half  months  to  exotic  destinations  in  the  likes  of  Turkey  and  Greece.

Despite  long  hours  and  sore  feet,  Yjosine  loved  the  experience.  She  was  one  of  18  â&#x20AC;&#x153;mostly  Kiwiâ&#x20AC;?  crew  members  aboard  and  got  to  explore  Greek  islands  like  Ios  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  her  favourite  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  where  she  spent  a  memorable  week  ashore  sightseeing  and  partying.

She  recently  returned  from  Mauritius  in  the  Indian  Ocean,  having  worked  this  yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  season  for  the  owner  of  a  21-­metre  yacht  for  ZKLFK VKH KHOSHG GR D UHÂżW 7KHUH ZDV D ORW

Janet Andre aboard one of the superyachts she worked on in the Mediterranean of  pressure  redecorating  it,  Jade  admits,  but  she  learnt  more  about  â&#x20AC;&#x153;provisioningâ&#x20AC;?  of  the  yacht  than  general  housekeeping  which  was  a  bonus.

As  one  of  just  a  few  crew  on  board,  Jade  enjoyed  doing  day  charters  for  up  to  12  guests.  It  was  an  â&#x20AC;&#x153;amazingâ&#x20AC;?  experience,  she  told  the  Chronicle,  the  highlight  being  sailing  around  outlying  islands  for  a  week  including  to  the  French  island  Reunion.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  become  a  bit  of  an  old  hand  working  in  the  wealthy  world  of  yachting.  Early  this  year  her  stewardess  job  on  board  a  57-­metre  superyacht  based  in  Barcelona,  Spain,  involved  cooking  for  a  â&#x20AC;&#x153;great  crewâ&#x20AC;?  of  nine.  And  while  sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  cooked  before,  Jade  admits  that  recipes  on  Google  helped  out  a  lot.

But  her  previous  superyacht  experience  was  less  pleasant:  she  worked  98  days  straight  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  up  to  128  hours  per  week  â&#x20AC;&#x201C;  during  D ÂżYH PRQWK URXQG WULS ZKLFK WRRN LQ Marseilles,  Malta,  Turkey,  Greece  and  Italy.

While  she  made  the  most  of  anything  from  two  days  to  two  weeks  off  at  every  port,  Jade  says  the  trip  itself  was  80  percent  work.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;The  life  of  travel,  money  and  luxury  look  glamorous  and  fun,â&#x20AC;?  she  adds,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;but  the  hard  work  requires  extremely  long  hoursâ&#x20AC;Ś

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  for  everybody,â&#x20AC;?  she  adds,  â&#x20AC;&#x153;and  you  need  to  know  how  to  bite  your  tongue.   â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;  is  the  only  answer  in  superyachting.â&#x20AC;?

But  she  describes  her  adventure  this  year  as  â&#x20AC;&#x153;life-­changingâ&#x20AC;?.   A  trained  chef,  and  with  less  gruelling  hours  than  Jade  experienced  last  year,  the  20-­year-­old  was  lucky  to  get  lots  of  time  off  to  explore  new  places.

A  highlight  was  a  week  spent  on  the  beaches  of  Corsica,  a  Mediterranean  island  located  between  France  and  Italy.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;It  was  cool  â&#x20AC;Ś  and  so  unexpected.â&#x20AC;?

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  set  her  sights  on  going  back  to  Antibes  in  France  in  a  few  months,  with  possible  sous  chef  job  opportunities  coming  up  through  online  agencies.

Letters Dear  Editor What  a  treat  it  was  to  watch  the  talented  ,QG\D *LEEV SHUIRUP RQ 6XQGD\ HYHQLQJ ZLWK her  performing  arts  whanau  from  Whitireia  in  Wellington.

It  was  a  last  minute  decision  for  them  to  perform  in  Raglan  as  the  group  had  been  in  Auckland  performing  at  a  festival  and  then  decided  to  give  back  to  the  community  where  Indya  had  come  from  on  their  return.

7KH PHVVDJH JRW RXW DQG D JRRG QXPEHU turned  up  at  Raglan  Area  school  to  see  a  world  class  performance  of  maori,  samoan  and  cook  island  contemporary  dance  and  vocals.  Indya  grew  up  in  Raglan  and  was  a  member  of  Whaingaroa  Dance  movement.  Indya  shows  us  that  you  can  achieve  your  dreams  and  the  creative  community  of  Raglan  is  a  wonderful  place  to  grow  up.      J  Kay

Gardening Column: Putting down roots

This  spring  is  no  exception.  Trying  for  some  of  us.  The  weather,  ground  warmth,  moisture  and  sunlight  hours,  has  affected  all  plants  and  trees.  The  new  moon  a  week  ago  saw  everything  jump  into  gear  and  grow.  Maintenance  on  weed  germination  is  now  essential.  Tomato  leaf  node  sprouts  need  to  be  removed  and  plants  need  stake  support.  Silver  beet  is  running  up  to  seed  and  needs  to  be  removed.  You  can  now  make  further  plantings  of  beans,  peas,  capsicums,  carrots,  sweet  corn,  silver  beet  and  spinach. :H DUH GLJJLQJ RXU ¿UVW SRWDWRHV VWLOO picking  broad  beans,  carrots  and  beetroot.

December  is  always  the  time  that  your  garden  provides  you  with  that  abundance  of  VDODG YHJHWDEOH DQG Ă&#x20AC;RZHUV Lawns  are  now  a  weekly  chore,  the  grass  clipping  are  invaluable  for  compost,  mulching  around  citrus,  trees  and  shrubs.  Lift  the  blade  on  your  mower  so  the  lawn  grass  develops  and  doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t  dry  out  too  much  in  January  by  being  too  short.

Herbs  are  really  useful  now  as:  sage  LQ VWXIÂżQJ GLOO IRU ÂżVK EDVLO IRU SHVWR rosemary,  mint,  marjoram  for  new  potatoes,  parsley  in  egg  sandwiches.  They  need  that  picking  to  prune  them  back  and  enhance  their  growth.  Many  skinks  are  now  present  around  concrete  paths  and  rockeries  -­  these  are Â

slaters. $OO IHLMRDV ZLOO EH LQ UHG Ă&#x20AC;RZHU QRZ with  birds  pollinating  them.  Cut  off  any  VXUSOXV JURZWK QRW WKH Ă&#x20AC;RZHUV DQG WKH same  with  the  citrus  -­  keeping  them  shrub  shape.  Citrus  lemons  should  have  a  second  Ă&#x20AC;RZHULQJ QRZ DQG QHHG IHHGLQJ ZLWK VKHHS pellets,  blood  and  bone  or  garden  compost  around  their  bases.  Grape  vines  need  pruning  on  leaders  too.  6WUDZEHUULHV DUH FRPLQJ WR IXOO Ă&#x20AC;XVK DQG need  checking  every  two  days,  otherwise  they  will  quickly  rot  if  it  is  wet.

Kids  Give-­away.  Primo  this  month.  12  pots  of  a  Kumara  plant.  These  are  well  established.  They  will  need  moisture  when  planting  out.  Leave  to  grow,  lifting  the  vines  as  they  cover  the  ground  allow  them  to  grow  a  metre  around  the  plant  then  trim.  Remember  to  hand  dig  out,  following  their  red  root  to  the  tubers.  A  big  thank  you  to  our  community  for  your  help  and  enthusiasm  for  these  Chronicle  gardening  articles.  We  live  in  a  unique,  healthy,  coastal  environment,  in  ZKLFK DOO SODQWV VKUXEV DQG WUHHV Ă&#x20AC;RXULVK with  minimal  maintenance.  We  do  have  lots  RI EHHV LQVHFWV EXWWHUĂ&#x20AC;LHV VPDOO QDWLYH birds  and  soil  micro  organisms  who  go  to  work  on  the  garden  baddies.  Have  a  nice  safe  Christmas/New  Year  and  will  catch  up  with  everybody  in  February.

Mojo Marine boating tips ith  summer  imminent,  this  brings  W back  all  those  fun  memories  of  last  summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  boating  antics!  So  itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  time  to  clear  the  leaves  of  the  boat  cover,  pump  up  the  trailer  tyres  and  get  back  on  the  water.  An  extended  period  of  time,  where  a  boat  has  not  been  used,  does  present  a  few  potential  problems!  Petrol  does  go  stale  after  some  time,  the  hydrocarbons  evaporate,  the  varnish  and  other  additives  are  left  behind  and  the  fuel  becomes  thick  and  gummy.  Water  can  also  build  up  over  time,  due  to  condensation  LQ D SDUWO\ ÂżOOHG WDQN 0DQ\ RI WKH FRDVW JXDUG callouts  are  due  to  old  or  contaminated  fuels,  which  cause  the  engine  to  not  run  well  or  stop  completely.

So  the  safest  approach  is  to  drain  your  fuel  tank,  use  the  old  fuel  for  the  land  mover  and  ¿OO \RXU ERDW ZLWK QLFH IUHVK IXHO Secondly,  charge  the  engine  battery,  your  boat  might  start!  but  running  with  a  discharged  battery,  puts  a  lot  of  load  on  the  charging  system  of  the  engine  and  a  common  knock-­on Â

effect  of  this  is  the  burning  out  of  windings  in  the  ignition  system-­  again,  engine  stops!  So  a  few  things  to  bear  in  mind  before  you  KRSH LQ \RXU SULGH DQG MR\ ZKHQ LW UXQV DQG head  out  over  the  bar!!

A  very  good  idea  is  to  have  your  boat  serviced  before  the  season  starts,  not  at  the  end!  In  this  way  you  can  avoid  all  the  issues  mentioned  above.

Mojo  Marine  is  now  stocking  a  premium  grade  2  stroke  oil,  using  infearer  quality  oil  has  quite  an  effect  on  a  high  performance  engine,  poor  lubricating  qualities,  carbon  built,  all  lessen  useful  life  of  an  engine.  The  oil  I  am  stocking  has  a  better  burn  quality,  this  results  in  much  less  smoke  and  cleaner  burn,  this  does  not  burn  your  eyes!  Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s  not  very  pleasant  when  you  swim  up  to  the  back  of  a  boat  after  skiing  for  example  and  having  clouds  of  smoke  DURXQG WKH HQYLURQPHQW EHQHÂżWV WRR Please  feel  free  to  get  in  touch  if  you  have  any  questions,  or  require  a  hand.

Trust explained and recruits required You  may  not  have  heard  of  the  West  Coast  Health  Charitable  Trust  but  you  may  well  be  very  thankful  of  what  it  does  one  day.  Set  up  in  2011  its  main  focus  has  been  in  providing  the  funding  necessary  to  run  PRIME,  which  stands  for  Primary  response  in  a  medical  emergency,  and  is  staffed  by  local  medical  practitioners  and  nurses.  The  aim  of  PRIME  is  to  support  the  ambulance  service  with  a  rapid  response  to  the  seriously  ill  or  injured,  and  to  provide  higher  level  medical  skills  that  may  not  otherwise  be  available  from  the  ambulance  service  in  rural Â

communities.  PRIME  operates  24  hours  a  day,  7  days  a  week  on  a  roster  system.
