Christmas in the park On behalf of the organising team from Surfside Church, thank you so much Raglan for supporting Christmas In The Park again this year. It makes it all worthwhile when so many come along and enjoy the evening, even though it was a little breezy and cool. Once again local businesses got behind us with sponsorship. Without that help we couldn’t run an event like this. Special thanks to Ray Whites for providing the mini Moke rides and the Community House for the games for the children, as well as all the local groups who performed on stage, especially the school children; didn’t they do well! The fireworks made a great finale, thank you Gun Lai. Also thanks to the Maori Wardens for doing such a good job of the traffic control, and the Police and St Johns for being on standby in case they were needed. Our major sponsors for the night were: Waikato District Council, Raglan Community Board and Creative Communities NZ. Waikato Scaffolders provided the stage. Raglan Lions Club, Sky City, Waikato Sound and Lighting, Raglan Charitable Hospital Trust and Raglan 4 Square. Other significant sponsors were, Ray Whites, Bow St Motors, Westpac Raglan, PGG Wrightson, Orca, Wahine Moe, Raglan Chamber of Commerce, Raglan Pharmacy, Nannies Fish & Chips, Raglan Engineering, Williams Tyres & Mechanics, Control Systems, Raglan Surf School, Wainui Rd Foodmarket, Raglan Chronicle, Top Cut Butchery, Hong Kong Kitchen, Summer Glow Apiaries, Jo’s Takeaways, NC Snook Ltd, Anexa Animal Health, Xtreme Waste,Volcom, The Shack and Whaingaroa Harbour Care. Friendly, efficient service,in your community Dave Hanna and Lisa Slade with her P&O Cruise gift certificate for $5000

Waitetuna resident Lisa Slade’s ship has finally come in. After a lifetime of never having won anything – and having travelled only to Australia – she had an unexpected call last Friday night from Raglan Real Estate Ray White to say she’d won a luxury P & O cruise for two to the tune of $5000. Hers was the winning ball to come up after a Lotto-like spin of the cage by director/owner Dave Hanna in a postauction promotion for all sole agency vendors and purchasers. “I just couldn’t believe it,â€? Lisa told the Chronicle the following day. She admits she’d read the promotional leaflet some time ago when putting her Otonga Valley Road house on the market with Ray White but had eventually screwed it up and tossed it in the rubbish bin. Daughter Amy, 11, is keen to join her mum on the cruise, which is valid for 12 months, but Lisa was still in shock when the Chronicle called and not quite up to making decisions. “I’ll have to get a strategy ‌ a plan,â€? reckoned Lisa, who will be looking to organise things through local travel broker Rochelle White. Meantime Dave, downtown at Ray White, was delighted to have “a localâ€? win the cruise. The prize, he says, has come out

of all the Raglan Real Estate agents’ own pockets. Lisa’s lived here most of her life, growing up on a farm with her parents at Te Akau and visiting grandparents across the harbour in Raglan.

She’s keen now to sell her Waitetuna lifestyle block and maybe move back into town. Second in the draw and winners of a $500 weekend for two at SkyCity Casino in Auckland were a Te Awamutu family who recently bought a property in Wallis Street, on a corner opposite the bowling club, and plan to settle here. “It’s great that we got one of each (a vendor and a purchaser), says Dave of the inaugural draw, which followed a charity auction with the $200 in proceeds going to Raglan Night Owls. Wildlife exhibition a study in patience Trevor Penfold is a patient man. He will crouch for hours with camera in hand – in the pouring rain if need be – to capture a perfect shot of New Zealand wildlife, whether it be an orca or an insect. “I’ve had a love for wildlife,” he explains, “as far back as I can remember.” Now he has a pre-Christmas exhibition on at the Old School Arts Centre, celebrating some of the wildlife in New Zealand, much of it focused on Raglan where Trevor settled seven years ago from the UK with wife Jenny and daughter Amelia. Trevor says that out of the many places he’s photographed throughout

the country, Raglan surprisingly has the broadest range of wildlife, and it’s particularly diverse around our harbour. It is these images and more that are included in Trevor’s ‘Wildlife Through the Lens’ exhibition. The exhibition comes exactly a year after the local launching of Trevor’s first book ‘Visions of Nature - New Zealand’s Wild in the West’, which included some stunning shots of orca in Whaingaroa Harbour. And if all goes according to plan, he will have a second book to launch this time next year based not on Raglan this time round but with a more national coverage of NZ’s native species. Trevor has already spent a month in the South Island and Stewart Island “trying to build images up” he says, although it’s proven difficult given the bad weather down-country. And another hard thing, he adds, is the cost of travelling around down there. To keep costs to a minimum Trevor spent the month in the South Island sleeping in his car. And he’s going to do it all over

again come the New Year to get more of the shots he needs. “It works great,” despite the discomfort, he adds, because at least he gets to be in exactly the right places to photograph, for instance, Fiordland’s “quite nervous” crested penguins or the “more human-tolerant” yellow-eyed penguins in the Catlins. To keep Trevor’s work competitively priced, he and Jenny have established their own production house, Perfect Planet Publishing. It’s been a “steep learning curve”, they say, but with the first book now in more than 40 retail outlets nationwide and sales to libraries throughout Australasia, the UK and Europe it has more than paid off. And Trevor’s passion for wildlife photography is not just about taking pictures of the different species, he says. It’s more about the underlying message of protecting the planet through a “trickle-feed” approach rather than outright conservation that might put some people off. “It is my way of reminding people that life is not just about us.” Edith Symes

Steel sculptures guard walk-bridge In two simple and intimate ceremonies last Thursday Raglan’s latest public works of art were unveiled and welcomed into their new situations either side of the new walk-bridge. From a distance the colours of the sculptures beam an invitation to bridge-walkers to stop and take a closer look. For those who do a feast of fine detailing is revealed. The sculptures, commissioned by Waikato District Council, are the work of local artists Simon Te Wheoro and Pakewa Watene and took several months to design and construct. Sue Russell

Couple shocked at huge CV plunge A Hamilton couple got a nasty shock this week when they found the capital value of their rented out Raglan property had been slashed by over a third – and the value of the house by more than two thirds. Quotable Value has reduced the CV of the Manakau Road property from $280,000 to $185,000. And while the land value has been cut back by only $10,000 to $145,000, the value of improvements has fallen by a whopping $85,000 to just $40,000. The devastated couple contacted Waikato District Council early this week in the hope QV had bungled its figures and they could get some peace of mind, but say they were told no-one was available and they should simply put in an objection and await the outcome of that in the new year. The latest case is a surprise because QV has said the most any Raglan residential CV has fallen by is about 20 per cent. And it’s all the more surprising

The new committee members, appointed mid-October at the annual general meeting, include Paul Gillett (president), John Rippey (vice president), Val Rippey (treasurer) and Noel Barber (secretary) along with six other members. Along with organising the Whanau Day, the committee have been involved in refurbishing the interior of the club building. With a builder and painter on the committee, Noel Barber says that “ everyone has come together” to help out where they can. Saturday was full of activity with around 200 people in attendance and with the sports tournaments, hangi, bouncy castle and car boot sale there was something for everyone to enjoy. The highlight of the day, however, was the touch tournament, which had the crowds cheering on the sidelines as eight teams went head to head for the final prize. The winner’s title was taken out on the day by team Harty Coast who won cash prizes and a voucher for a cruise on the Wahinemoe, kindly donated by Raglan Boat Charters. The touch tournament finals were part of the existing touch modules that run every Tuesday night at the club, an initiative “to get the community involved with the Rugby Club,” while exercising and having a bit of fun. “I was stoked, everyone was over the moon, the touch alone saw about 100 people so it was an

because Manakau Road is outside the two “pockets” of residential land hardest hit by falling values. Meanwhile, the council has announced a onemonth extension in the deadline for submissions to its rating review – from December 19 to January 20 – because of what it terms “confusion” between the rating review and the revaluation of properties. Raglan Community Board chairman Rodger Gallagher, however, saw the move as “the first sign that the council realises something is wrong”. He said the new Raglan property valuations just didn’t make sense. Rodger has also sent a please-explain to the council over QV data supplied for a New Zealand Herald supplement which indicated a 20.7 per cent drop overall for Raglan property values, whereas the rating review showed an overall 8 per cent fall in Raglan ward capital values. Triathlon a hit with gym members Last Saturday morning you may have seen a 22-strong group of contenders in the Raglan Gym triathlon huddled at the Kopua Domain boat ramp. Marking the end of the training year as the Weight Loss Challenge and remaining maintenance classes come to a close, the group embarked on a friendly race against each other over a combined distance of 12.6km. The course involved a 150m swim from the boat ramp around a buoy in the harbour, followed by an 8.4km cycle to and from a sign

at Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive, finished by a 4km run to The Silos on the wharf and back to the Kopua Domain boat ramp. Describing the event as a “great goal to train towards,” gym owner Amber Beaumont agrees that the course “pushes you a bit and makes you step out of your comfort zone.” “Some of the members were saying they had jelly legs after the bike and they were trying to run their hardest but couldn’t. It’s quite an accomplishment, seventy percent of them have never done anything like this before”, says Amber.

The triathlon saw individuals as well as teams competing with the emphasis being on participation and fun. “ Entering as a team lets people do parts of the race rather than the whole thing and it’s more fun in teams,” says Amber.

While some of them had been nervous prior to the event Amber said that “everyone is already training for next year.”

Raglan’ s Kiwi Christmas n w o d t n u o C Enjoy a fun family day celebrating Christmas in the park Confessions of a last minute Christmas shopper I’ve always admired people that manage to prepare in advance for Christmas, you know the ones, those organised people that finished all their shopping way back in September. With Christmas just over a week away, I find myself in the position I find myself every other year; unprepared, gift-less and quickly running out of time. I’ve spent the last few weeks procrastinating about the actual amount of shopping that needs to be done, briefly telling myself that I was boycotting Christmas this year in a futile attempt at trying to escape the shopper hordes over the hill. As Christmas Day slowly inches closer, the realisation sinks in (as it does every year) that despite my inner protests, some level of Christmas gifting is unavoidable. Recently, I’ve been seeing a lot of campaigns on the Internet promoting local consumption. Popping up in the wake of the global recession and economic crisis, the premise behind these campaigns being: why hand over your hard-earned money to a bunch of corporate conglomerates when you can give it to somebody in your community who has produced something locally.

While it may be cheaper to pop into Hamilton for an easy gift solution, the buy local campaigns question where that $10 you spent is really going. By buying locally, you are ultimately putting money back into your community, boosting business and creating jobs, which in turn grows the local economy. With all these thoughts in mind, I set out on a mission to attempt all my Christmas shopping in Raglan. Fortunately, we have a vibrant creative community that makes it easy to buy locally – check out some cool gift ideas that also support the independent businesses in our town!

Still stumped? The Raglan Pharmacy has a range of men’s cologne and gift packs to choose from as well as other goodies for guys.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IDEAS For Him: This is the category I probably struggle the most with. Being a surf town, surf shops are the obvious choice here; with over five different surf shops in town you can find a wide range of surf and skate brands. Don’t quite fit into the surf shop demographic? The quintessential Raglan leather jandal from Soul Shoes never goes astray, heaps of styles and colours to choose from too!

Raglan is home to a huge number of artists and galleries, so exploring some of the local talent and finding an original piece of artwork would be another great idea. Check out Matapihi and the Old School Arts Centre as starting points.

For Her: A lot of options here with a lots of gift shops catering to feminine tastes, I always seem to find the perfect present at Zinnia after a good trawl through the shelves, a wonderful assortment of knick knacks to investigate too especially if you like antiques. Tony Sly Pottery is also a great place to find something beautiful and hand made while Flaxen and Atamira have some great accessories for the fashion forward pack.

These are only some of the local independent businesses around town and there are a lot more to look into. If you’re anything like me and still have a substantial amount of Christmas shopping to do, find a unique gift while supporting your community’s economy and buy local. Maki Nishiyama

Win a copy of the New Zealand Good Beach Guide by Tim Rainger! When I laid my hands on the smooth matte cover of this book, I have to say that I felt the inner book nerd within me stir. Packed with glossy pages full of photos and entertaining banter, this book provides an in-depth guide to the coastline of New Zealand’s North Island. The information presented in this guide is broad, going beyond the beach and writing about the local culture from friendly cafe recommendations, accommodation suggestions and even detailed weather maps. But what really differentiates this book from any other coffee-table photo book is it’s underlying message that some of the coastal gems we love so much are under threat. While the beauty of our coastline is evident, Tim also highlights that we have to take an ethical approach to environmental management in order to preserve the beauty of our beloved beaches. And his message couldn’t come at a better time as recent environmental catastrophes like the RENA oil spill have shown how vulnerable our coastlines can be.

Head to Raglan Net to read about Tim’s journey in writing the NZ Good Beach Guide and the involvement of some of the local Raglanders.

Strawberry, black pepper and thyme cordial recipe One of the upsides of a kiwi Christmas is the long days and warm summer sunshine that provide the perfect backdrop for a get-together or a barbeque. Raglan’s own celebrity food blogger Emma Galloway gave us this recipe as a great drink alternative that uses natural ingredients. Great for kids, even with the pepper tang, and could also work as a mixer for a fruity summer cocktail. Because the resulting product is a syrup, you can even drizzle over ice cream or pancakes for a twist of strawberry flavour! Currently living in Australia, Emma’s blog features a selection of recipes centered around gluten and dairy-free eating as well as tips on organic vegetable gardening. Don’t forget to check out Emma’s blog at www.mydarlinglemonthyme.com for more great recipes!

An interesting read and great gift idea, this book is a must-have if you love a great Kiwi summer by the beach! The Raglan Chronicle has one copy of the NZ Good Beach Guide to give away this month. Head to www.raglan.net.nz and follow the instructions to be in to win! Winner will be drawn December 21st 2011. Good luck!

Cordial Recipe: Using this amount of black pepper makes an ever so slight tingle in the back of your throat, which is really nice and not hot in any way. My kids happily drank it, just so you know. Soda water can be used in place of sparkling mineral water if preferred. Makes 3 1/2 cups of syrup enough to make 8-12 diluted drinks 500g fresh strawberries, washed & hulled 1 cup unrefined raw sugar 1 cup filtered water 3/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper small handful of fresh thyme sprigs 1 tsp pure vanilla essence sparkling mineral water (or soda water), to serve Blend strawberries in a food processor until smooth. Combine sugar, water, ground black pepper and thyme in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to infuse and cool for 10 minutes. Strain mixture to remove thyme and most of the black pepper, add to the strawberry puree along with the vanilla essence and pulse to combine. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove most of the seeds, place into a glass jar and chill until required. To serve spoon a little of the strawberry mixture, to taste, into glasses and top up with sparkling mineral water. Any left over syrup will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Crowd wowed by ‘Christmas in the Park’ The Biannual Christmas in the Park was a treat for Raglan with Surfside once again entertaining the community with a fabulous line up of acts. With the stage set up on the soccer field there was a wide open space for families to gather with their picnics and enjoy the night of Christmas cheer. There were performances from local schools and identities as well as the Funky Monkeys, a top knotch band and dance troupe. Santa arrived overhead in an aeroplane and then parachuted swiftly towards the estatic crowd of children. The evening ended with carols and fireworks. Photos thanks to Linda Holmes

Changes to Raglan bus services Raglan students travelling to Hamilton schools will have the choice of another bus next year, with the Te Uku to Hamilton service being extended to begin in the west coast town. The Te Uku to Hamilton school “assist” service will operate from Monday to Friday during school terms, starting on Wednesday, 1 February 2012. The service will depart from Raglan at 6.55am, stopping in Te Uku at 7.15am and arriving outside Hamilton Boys’ High School at 8.15am. The return bus will leave from outside the high school at 3.25pm, stopping in Te Uku at 4.25pm and arriving in Raglan 20 minutes later. Waikato Regional Council transport and policy group manager Vaughan Payne said extensive work had gone into finding a solution for Raglan bus passengers. “Since earlier in the year we have been working closely with Waikato District Council and the bus contractor to find an affordable and sustainable solution to community requests for increased buses from Raglan. “The Go Bus driver of the Te Uku school “assist” service has been picking up some students in Raglan on a complimentary basis because he

lives in town. But a full service has not been provided through Raglan and the contractor could not guarantee it would continue. “By extending the school “assist’ service we will provide surety to Raglan students and their parents, while also freeing up space on other buses during school terms,” Mr Payne said. Costs to operate the region’s bus services are covered through rates, fares and central government funding. The Raglan to Hamilton service is already heavily subsidised, with 60 per cent of the costs covered by both tax and ratepayers. To help cover the $30,000 cost of the route extension and align prices with other Waikato regional fares, Raglan bus fares will increase from Sunday, 1 January 2012. BUSIT! fares from Raglan will be $5.90 for adults and $4 for children, while cash fares will be $8.10 for adults and $4.80 for children. New printed timetables will be available on the bus and at the transport centre in Hamilton’s Bryce Street. Alternatively, visit www.busit.co.nz or call 0800 4 BUSLINE (0800 4 2875 463) for more information. You can also keep up to date with the latest BUSIT! information via Facebook: www.facebook.com/busitwaikato.

Letters Dear Sir, The Chronicle has described the last Raglan Community Board meeting as rowdy. The cause was ratepayers upset by Waikato District Council inflicting a double whammy hit of a revaluation and a rating review on them. Many people are saying that the revaluation and the rating review are unfair for Raglan. Since the Board meeting I have been asked by ratepayers what they should do. Ratepayers are able to object both to their valuation notice (must be in by 23 December) and make a submission on the Rates Review (was 19 December - now extended to 20 January).Forms are available from the Raglan Council office. About 850 ratepayers have been told that the value of their property went down by more than 13% and these same people will have a reduction in their rates. If you are one of this group and you don’t believe that your property has dropped in value by this much, then you can lodge an objection. But if your valuation does go up after it is reviewed, then you won’t get a rate reduction. For 250 ratepayers, the revaluation and Rates Review don’t have much impact at all as their property values are down a little and their rates are steady. For the 1050 remaining ratepayers, property values are either down slightly or have moved up. For

this entire group of 1050 people, rates will move up. If you agree with your new valuation then no need to do anything about objecting to it. If you are concerned that the revaluation will push your rates up then you need to lodge an objection. You should also make a submission on the Rates Review and tick the box saying, ‘Yes I want to be heard’. Information published by Quotable Value in the NZ Herald earlier this month shows that Raglan values dropped by 20.7% over the last 3 years. This same company has done the revaluation of Raglan for Council with Capital Values for Raglan Ward dropping by 8% and Raglan residential property values up by 3%. The discrepancy with their published 20.7% figure seems a valid reason to give when lodging an objection. In regard to the Rates Review, I believe that the proposal to charge for Stormwater collection on a capital value basis is unfair to Raglan. Ratepayers with a water view and having the lowest disposal cost will pay the highest cost under the proposed scheme. A uniform charge per dwelling in all towns across the District is a fairer system. The main issue with the Rates Review is that it is based on a large drop in property value in most other parts of the District relative to a small drop or an increase for Raglan. It is this relative change that means rates would go up for 1050 of our ratepayers. If you are unhappy with your revaluation or the Rating Review then you need to let Council know by lodging an objection and by making a submission. Having this information will help WEL manage electricity throughout our network more efficiently.

Your Smart Box and the new wireless network ‘talk to each other’ to provide WEL a complete picture about how our customers use electricity.

The WELconnect programme will benefit you by allowing WEL to:

• Restore power outages faster than ever before • Minimise power spikes and dimming, thus improving power quality • Manage power in a way that helps minimise price rises in the long-term

WEL will install Smart Boxes on properties in the Raglan area between 21 November and 28 February (with a break over Christmas). Your Smart Box will either replace or be installed next to your current electricity meter and looks very similar. It’s important to note, there is no cost to you.
