S

anta made a spectacular entrance by helicopter at last Sunday’s Christmas in the Park, delighting the thousand or so revellers at the biennial Raglan celebration.

The jolly man in red waved and tossed lollies from the air as the nifty agricultural helicopter circled so sharply over the crowd it looked Santa might tip out and put a damper on the festive season.

But fortunately Santa was “well strapped in”, the Chronicle heard, and in fine fettle too.

“Santa’s got a good arm, watch out!” yelled local MC Dean Hishon from the stage, set up for the second year running in a far corner of Kopua Domain well protected from onshore winds by a stand of remaining trees.

Sure enough the lollies pelted down from above and kids were scrambling to get them before Santa had even landed and a Mini Moke chauffeured him to the stage where he gave his traditional ho-hoho greeting and threw out more sweets.

The jolly man exited soon after to a lively rendition of ‘Jingle Bells’ performed on stage by a solo guitarist and large group of school children playing ukuleles.

The four-hour extravaganza kicked off across the estuary with the Raglan Pipe Band. While local schools took turns at performing early on, the show carried

on until nightfall with performances by local band The Kryptonites, Prestige Dance Crew from Auckland and Late 80s Mercedes from Hamilton.

The Surfside Church event wrapped up with Christmas carols led by Late 80s Mercedes, the words illuminated on a big screen new to this year’s show.

The addition of fairground rides was also new and proved a big drawcard to families who bought tickets for everything from a mini ferris wheel and bike carousel to the chair-o-plane, giant slide and bouncy castle. A face-painting tent also attracted many littlies, while hot food and coffee were also on offer.

The estimated 1000-strong crowd – spread out over the domain’s soccer fields, many on picnic rugs or under gazebos – was “as good as we’ve had” said Surfside stalwart Norris Peart.

Norris – who’s seen Santa come and go over the years via anything from a boat and car to a parachute (twice) and a Harley Davidson – revealed Santa’s daredevil flight this year came courtesy of Te Uku local Chris Field and Rotor Work Helicopter Services from Te Kowhai.

Agony and ecstasy await mountain run trailblazers

R

aglan can expect a few hardy locals and plenty out-of-towners at Saturday’s inaugural Karioi Trail race – an extreme sports event which traverses the mountain twice for a total distance of 25 kilometres and an 1850-metre all-up ascent.

The second steep climb of Karioi will undoubtedly be the toughest for competitors, says Raglan resident and event organiser Francois Mazet, an endurance runner of mountain trails in France.

But one good point is that the view is “amazing”, he told the Chronicle this week.

Francois has just completed the run/walk trail – for which he’s cut and cleared new tracks – in four hours. But competitors have double that time in which to finish the event, he points out, and the distance can be shared in a two-person team event relay.

Not that it’s all about the time, he adds, it’s about the pleasure. “Karioi is a mountain that we love running and that’s why we want to share the experience.”

The race, which Francois hopes to make an annual event, starts at 8am from the Swann farm on the Ruapuke side of the mountain.

Francois is delighted that Rotorua’s Mike Tennent, who’s running 52 half-marathons (or more) in 52 weeks to raise money for Hospice, has registered for the race. Only last weekend the 54-year-old was competing in The Goat Adventure Run at Tongariro, widely acclaimed as one of the country’s premier off road running events.

Also competing are “lots” of men in the 40-60 age group and six women. Local possibles include Tom Welby, Mike Loten and Lorraine Von Huben.

Prize-giving at Raglan Golf Club is at 5.30 on the day, with trophies for the winners made by local steel artist Phil Meek.

Raglan businesses have supported the event with spot prizes up for grabs, ranging from massage and Volcom vouchers to a Wahine Moe cruise on the Whaingaroa Harbour.

Union Church fills gap with a Christmas Day barbecue

aglan will have a community Christmas Day lunch after all – but on a lesser scale and with a distinctive beachside flavour.

With the town’s annual Christmas dinner in the town hall cancelled this year, the Union Church has stepped in to host a barbecue lunch on the grassed area alongside the church at the bottom of Stewart Street.

“Someone needed to do it,” says Pastor Jeanette Vink. “There’s so many people on their own.”

But she emphasises the noon to 2pm Christmas Day barbecue will be quite different to the comparatively lavish affair organised for the past three years by Sue Oliver, Anglican Church priest Rhonda Chung, her chef husband Colin and longtime local muso Dave Maybee.

Sizeable turnout over having peninsula say

aikato District Council could have a sizeable pile of submissions by tomorrow (Friday) over a bid to rezone the Rangitahi Peninsula if a public meeting held at Raglan town hall last Saturday is any accurate gauge of community interest.

Locals packed the town hall supper room for a Raglan Residents & Ratepayers Association briefing on how to go about making submissions on what is known as private plan change 12 – a zoning change proposed by the Raglan Land Company so it can then seek resource consent for a development of up to 500 homes and associated amenities on the peninsula.

Jenni Vernon, who has 18 years’ experience as a Resource Management Act commissioner, emphasised that residents submitting against the plan must put emotion aside and focus only on what they saw as significant adverse environmental effects.

These took in the likes of amenity and landscape values, dust and noise issues, iwi or cultural effects, and economic and social effects.

“We’re not duplicating that,” Jeanette says. “There are no chefs in our midst.”

She also makes clear they’ll be able to seat and feed a maximum of 75 guests as opposed to the 150, 200 and 215 the town hall Christmas dinner has catered for over the past three years.

One lady has already offered to make mini Christmas cakes for all 75 guests, says Jeanette, while another has taken on the making of the Christmas puddings.

Individuals and businesses in town, including the local butcher, will help sponsor the event.

Jeanette says if people – particularly the elderly who may have families far away – are on their own at Christmas, they should come and share in the festivities whether they’re churchgoers or not.

Backpackers and “under-resourced” families are also welcome, she adds, and there’ll be small gifts and games for the children.

She’s open to donations of cash or food, and would also welcome anyone able to lend a helping hand.

With much of the regular congregation away or tied up with their own families come Christmas, she says the Union Church itself has “not a lot of labour” to call on and would appreciate any assistance on the day.

The idea is to keep the occasion simple, with some of the food prepared beforehand by church members.

There will be no service at the Union Church on Christmas Day, but there will be a Christmas Eve family service at 6.30pm.

Colin Chung meanwhile says it’s “good” the Union Church has stepped in to fill the void, and adds the annual town hall community Christmas dinner – which runs from noon to about 3pm – will be back next year with all hands on deck.

He and his co-organisers ran an advert in the Chronicle recently encouraging the Raglan community to invite people to their table “if you know they are going to be on their own”. She also stressed it was “not a numbers game” and that the volume of submissions received would not in itself carry weight with the independent commissioners appointed by Waikato District Council.

Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley told the meeting it had always “seemed to us [council] that the private plan change should be a fully notified process … it is important that the community has its say in a way that has value to the commissioners”.

Submissions in support of, or against the proposed change, must be in by tomorrow (Friday) and then commissioners Phil Mitchell of Auckland and Alan Watson of Tauranga will conduct hearings on the bid to rezone the peninsula from rural to residential.

Saturday’s meeting heard that under the “seriously complicated” Resource Management Act the private plan change was a long journey that could take up to five years. The matter would end up out of the commissioners’ hands if parties appealed their decision. If mediation failed the issue would be decided in the Environment Court.

No picnic putting on a mass haka Ray White travel voucher winner

or the second time in just over a fortnight a promised big haka to protest seabed mining and deep-sea oil drilling has failed to eventuate – to the disappointment of Raglan residents who’d wanted to join in.

A planned haka at the huge ‘Banners on the Beach’ protest at Wainamu (Ocean) Beach on November 23 was abandoned for what KASM president Phil McCabe called “strategic” reasons, and then last Sunday a mass haka which was to have rounded out a Tainui iwi and KASM-organised picnic with a cause at the Kokiri Centre also failed to eventuate.

Sunday’s haka was to have sent a message “that you do not mine the seabed or drill for oil in Aotearoa”, and numbers at the picnic swelled from 40-odd to about 80 as the time set down for the protest approached.

However kaumatua Russell Riki told the gathering the traditional Maori challenge was not to be taken lightly and “we’re not going to have a haka today”.

While no-one spelt out exactly why not, Russell Riki did talk of his preference to hold a haka to coincide with the closing of submissions on seabed mining and of his fellow kaumatua Sean Ellison being “a bit sick with a sore throat” and wanting to save

Clearly the disappointing turnout on the day – a situation the Chronicle contributed to by publishing a wrong date for the picnic – may well have been another factor.

The picnic was a relaxed and informative affair, with anybody who wanted able to take a turn at the microphone and give picnickers their take on the mining and oil drilling issues.

Even two community police officers who turned up at the event – their presence obviously resented by some, who saw it as Government interference – were

cajoled by Angeline Greensill into saying a few words.

While the picnic was ostensibly about “awakening the elements and defending the ocean”, in practical terms it also provided the opportunity for people to put together on the spot their submissions against seabed mining.

Through the day a couple of would-be graffiti artists – under the tutelage of painter and art teacher Xavier Meade also spraypainted a huge “No Deep Sea Oil” message on a wall of the Kokiri stage that’s easily visible to boats entering Whaingaroa Harbour. Edith Symes

Animisme: A show of stuffed skins and bones

D

ead animals may not be the most conventional concept for art but taxidermy is nothing new. Examples of embalmed animals can date back to ancient civilizations and this Friday the 13th, you can experience for yourself what can be created out of animal skins and bones.

A joint exhibition by Annick Faubert and Marten ten Broek, Animisme will present a different perspective on life and death through skins, feathers, bones and horns. Marten, with his bone work pieces and Annick with her taxidermy, will have 13 pieces each on display at the Studeo gallery.

While some might wonder how an interest in taxidermy began, Annick recalls she’s always had a keen interest in the process.

“I remember when I was younger I’d always try to keep pieces (of animals) that my dad had left over after hunting,” she says. Having not known the proper methods of stuffing and tanning they would often rot and spoil.

Her interest in the subject has been recently renewed after she saw raw deer hide for sale on Trade Me and decided to give it another go.

“I try to use as few chemicals as possible.” Annick employs an old Native American method of tanning where brains are used to put fat & protein back into the skin.

Using mostly birds and small mammals, the animals are often road kill or a by-product of farming and hunting, so the animals are recycled in a sense.

“People will often donate them to me.

Even people I don’t even know will drop something off or give me call. The others are donated by farmers (e.g. still born lambs) and hunters with parts of animals they don’t want.”

An exhibition not to be missed, expect traditional stuffed taxidermy pieces as well as framed art and some functional pieces like lamps and hooks. Health Centre’s timely reminder

hristmas is fast approaching so we would like to remind patients to include repeat prescriptions and booking doctor appointments in their Christmas checklist.

The clinic will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday during the week of Christmas and the New Year. This, combined with our annual influx of visitors, will have a big impact on the number of appointments available. We would therefore advise patients to make essential bookings in advance.

Patients can contact the clinic to order repeat scripts via email: nurse@ westcoasthealth.co.nz or by leaving a detailed message on the nurse answer phone. Please be sure to clearly state your full name, telephone number and the list of medications that you need. Please be mindful that prescriptions may take up to 48 hours to process over this busy period.

as a Registrar and will be with us until June next year and long time Raglan resident Carol Millar has also joined the team as a receptionist. She will be working alongside Lynny and Debbie on the front desk. Carol is well known around town from working as a St. John’s Ambulance Officer which she has done for the last twelve years. Merren Tait and Lisa Thomson presented to the Raglan Community Board last Tuesday a large Agee-style jar of butts collected in just an hour around Trade Aid and the library. Merren

said the butts were incredibly toxic, and the filters had plastic so never properly biodegraded.

The pair noted many of the tourists coming here were smokers and called for special butt depositories to be placed strategically about town. Board members indicated it would be worthwhile for the duo to prepare and lodge a submission on the issue.

Restricted Fire Season for Rural and Urban Areas Pursuant to section 22 Forest & Rural Fires Act 1977 & Waikato District Council Open Air Bylaw 2007 and 2012 Waikato District as Fire Authority for the Waikato territorial district gives notice of a RESTRICTED fire season in effect from Monday 9th December 2013 until further notice. The risk of fires spreading is becoming higher as temperatures rise and rainfall decreases increasing fire danger levels across the district.

During a RESTRICTED fire season permits are required for all fires in the open air within rural and urban areas of the Waikato except for barbeques, hangis and fires in properly constructed incinerators or small braziers.

Permits for areas within the Waikato district can be applied for by contacting the Waikato District Council.

Services Offered

Landowners are reminded that they are responsible for the management of all fires lit on their land and could be held accountable for any suppression costs if the fire gets out of control even if a permit has been issued.

Fires must be safe, contained and monitored at all times. Consideration must be made to avoid smoke nuisance to neighbours and its effect on road visibility.

Those living on peat soils should ensure that there is no risk of fire becoming seated in these soils.

At no time is it permissible to burn green vegetation, rubber, plastics, toxic materials or treated timber.
