aglan bid a fond farewell to much-loved doctor Fiona Bolden recently as she leaves West Coast Health to dedicate more time to her passion of rural health advocacy. More than 50 people gathered at the bowling club to celebrate the impact Fiona has had on the community in the 17 years she was with the practice. Local kaumatua Russell Riki spoke of the inclement weather as a sign of the community’s tears over the departure of someone who they came to know as more than a doctor but also as a friend, sister, daughter and confidante. Fiona first came to Whaingaroa before doing a locum in Kawhia in 2001 and fell in love with the place, the following year she was back with her family and joined the practice alongside doctors Damian Tomic, Karen Bennatar and Ian Marcus. By 2004 she had bought the practice off Ian, and Damian and Karen who also departed that year leaving her as the only long-term doctor plus a few key locums, including Bob Lequesne, until Rebekah Doran joined as a partner in 2006. When she bought the practice there were 3500 patients and there are now over 5000. “Our team is much bigger and we are in the fortunate position of having a lot of young doctors who have joined us and who are wanting to stay working in Raglan within our community.” Fiona says it’s always the people who make leaving the hardest and she has forged many strong friendships in her doctoring journey in Whaingaroa.

MP for Taranaki-King Country Fiona will be leaving West Coast Health after 17 years at the clinic.

Humbled by the turnout, the kind words and the amazing gifts, she thought her farewell would just be a cuppa and scones with patients, friends and colleagues. “I’ll miss the people I work with and the people who have been my patients. They’re not just your patients they’re your friend and teacher.” Fiona was presented with a korowai, a painting by artist Robert Currie – also a patient, and an Aaron Kereopa surfboard carving by colleagues at West Coast Health. Her new role includes expanding her current work with the New Zealand Rural

General Practice Network to ensure rural people always have access to excellent healthcare. Equitable health outcomes for all is part of the solution she is seeking and she is grateful to the Whaingaroa women’s wellness group who have given her some insights into how that might happen. Fiona says she leaves the West Coast Health knowing it is in good hands under the guidance of practice partner and GP Mike Loten, manager Michelle Meenagh and lead nurse Tracey Frew. Janine Jackson

Dear Editor How inspiring are the youth in our community? The articles in last week’s Chronicle showcasing the social action campaigns the students from Raglan Area School have recently completed in this town fill my heart with hope that this next generation will lead this world to a better place. All of the issues targeted are important: single-use plastic, homelessness, refugees, kindness, 1080, pollution, art and te reo Māori. Bringing these issues out from the classroom onto our streets and into our awareness is awesome; it demonstrates to our youth that if they speak out they are important and can, in fact, make a big difference. That RAS and teacher Joe Rao in particular encourage this real world experiential learning is outstanding. That our community members, including local businesses, actively support these campaigns is special. As one of the initial drivers of Plastic Bag Free WhaingaroaRaglan, I am compelled to highlight and commend the mahi of

Dear Editor I want to ﬂy an idea. Over the last year or so I have been pondering the question, ‘How can we in Raglan have a better forum for discussion and decision making then we currently have?”. I think I may have found an answer. Town hall meetings. Town hall meetings have been used successfully both historically and currently (think Pike River Mine) for a community to get together to discuss, listen, deliberate, make decisions and when necessary take action. Town hall meetings are citizen and resident driven rather than elected bodies and/or official committees. The agenda of Town hall

hen Raglanbased scientist Liz Wedderburn says she’ll be “hanging out” in India for Christmas, you can bet it’ll be something of a busman’s holiday Especially so when she and a Canadian friend who works for the cattlemen’s association are planning not to do the usual tourist traps but instead to catch up with a German camel herder in Rajasthan, a northern state of India that borders Pakistan. The three women are friends who met through their work with the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock, and are looking forward now to getting together for a very different kind of Christmas. Not that travelling abroad is new for Scotland-born Liz who commutes daily from her home overlooking Raglan to Ruakura

where she is assistant research director for AgResearch. The job includes international collaborations for research, the 64 year old told the Chronicle. And as part of the centre’s Global Agenda team she has travelled most recently to Uruguay, Colombia, Peru and Costa Rica. “It’s a real privilege to be able to work with these people,” Liz said. “What I really enjoy about the trips is that New Zealand is able to act as a catalyst to bring people together,” she adds. “The (Latin and Central American) people there do a lot of good work but are not very well connected, whereas New Zealand has a different mindset and helps coordinate things.” To put it in perspective, Liz explains how the overall goal of the Agenda team is to try to demonstrate the contribution

the livestock sectors globally contribute to sustainable development goals. “We need more protein in the world by 2050 to feed a projected population of 9.6 billion.” So last month, for instance, Liz was one of six Kiwis from AgResearch, Massey University and the Livestock Improvement Corporation – funded by the Primary Industries Ministry – to run a workshop in Costa Rica for 40 researchers and policy people from across the farming sector. The common vision was to help develop a more efficient dairy programme together, she explains – low cost, low greenhouse gasemitting grazed dairy systems. Although there’s been a lot of bad press around dairying, she says, livestock is very important for rural livelihoods and much is being done to mitigate its negative impacts. Liz points out that New Zealand is very good at designing farm systems. “But we’re not lifting one system out of our country and dropping it in another,” she says. “We work with the (indigenous) people and bring our thinking, our mindset.” It’s a two-way process, she insists, in that the Agenda team also got out and about to see firsthand the “great biodiversity” which is not typical of New Zealand. “We take a set of principles there and bring another set back here.” Liz was particularly intrigued by the mix of monkeys, mangoes and iguanas all on the one farm in Costa Rica, with coffee-growing an additional possibility on others. The country is a tourist destination, she says, and is now looking to establish eco farms. Such diversification not only attracts the young Costa Ricans back into farming, she adds, but we can learn from them too and look outside a monoculture. Liz has returned from her trips enamoured with the Latin and Central American culture. “The people’s energy is fabulous,” she says. “They’re so hospitable and really motivated.” And communication was no problem: a mix of Spanish and English they call Spanglish sufficed, she laughs. Last call for contributing to the Raglan Naturally survey

t’s the last chance to have your say in the Raglan Naturally survey which closes on Monday, December 3. Raglan Naturally coordinator Gabrielle Parson says the survey is not your typical boring form and there are some great questions which will get you thinking. “If you get carried away and have a lot to say, please fill it out online or attach another page to the printed survey. Fill in as much as you can and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.” All input is of value, Gabrielle says, and will inform the 2019 plan, which will shape Whaingaroa’s future direction and development including - housing, zoning, parking, youth, tourism, connectivity and roads, environment and water quality, and community and council relationships. “We want to provide the opportunity for as many people as possible to have their say. It’s important that we get a

range of voices from around Whaingaroa,” she says. She is also keen to have a strong youth voice feeding into the survey as they are often missed in the community planning process. “If you know of young people between the ages of 16 and 23, please encourage them to take part. We are working to support all voices to be heard and included in our process.” Designed as a living document, the Raglan Naturally community plan will guide and manage growth and development as Whaingaroa continues to build towards a more active role in the future of the community. Raglan Karioi Trail - a challenge to kickstart summer

At 53, he is competing in is his sixth trail this year and although his training schedule sees him running much less these days, he’s still keen to lace up his running shoes to run up the maunga.

“I think I've got a few more Karioi trail runs left in me maybe I'll go four more years and that will make it 10,” he laughs. Dave reckons running the trail is a great way to kickstart summer and it helps him set a personal goal for the event. He says his main goal is to finish and doing it somewhere in the five-hour mark is a bonus. “I think most who have competed would agree it’s a pretty

The exhibition caters to all tastes and budgets with a myriad of artworks for sale from $5 to $500. Curator Susanne Giessen-Prinz says the exhibition is always a great hit and she looks forward to featuring work from a variety of local artists. “The exhibition gives local artists the opportunity to sell and showcase their work,” she says. “And it’s a great way to do all your Christmas shopping in one place.” Close to 40 artists’ work will be on display, including work by 3D artist Doug Ford, glass bead artist Heartbeads, abstract artist Claudia Grutke, fabric artist Anita Seddon painters Gila Cohen and Elsa Lye, driftwood Xmas trees by Maureen Soanes, to name a few. Plus, there’s children’s books, Christmas cakes and other delectable delights, decorations, glass art, clay sculpture and ceramic art. The exhibition is a fundraiser for the Old School’s clay shed, which holds regular clay play for its members, as well as workshops for beginner adults and the popular kids clay. t Te Mata School we have currently been practicing for the upcoming Interschool Athletics Competition, which will be held at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton on the 3rd of December. The events available to participate in are: Discus, Shotput, Sprints, Long Jump and High Jump. We will be taking children from the age of 8+. To decide which students will be participating in the events on the day, we will be holding a Te Mata School Athletics Day on the 26th of November, only for the students attending the school. The teachers will be judging and placing the students into different events, according to age and gender. Here are a few interviews, so you can see

n Wednesday, November 28th to Friday, November 30th, Mango, the year 7 and 8 class are going to Totara Springs Camp at the foot of the Kaimai Ranges in Matamata. Mango goes to Totara Springs every second year, the other camp we go to is YMCA Camp Adair in the Hunua Ranges on the outskirts of Auckland. Some of the team activities we will be doing are the Flying Fox, Flying Kiwi, Initiatives, Abseiling, Go Kart, Human Foosball, Rockwall, Archery, Low Ropes and much more! We will also be having some activities

which we do as a whole class, such as the Foam Slide and the Hot Pool. Other highlights at Totara Springs include; a hot water pool, which are fed by natural, underground hot water, there is also a gymnasium, cabins and 90 acres of grounds. We are designing camp T-Shirts, the teachers voted and Chloe O’Neill’s design turned out the best. Her design will be printed onto the back of the shirts. RAGLAN AREA SCHOOL NEWS Local Discovers 28 Million Year old Shark Fossil

Local resident Chris Dealy examines the excavation with Daniel Thomas, a senior lecturer who researches fossils from Massey University in Auckland.

n the 14th of November, a fascinating 28 million-

year-old

shark

fossil

was

discovered at our own small beach; Cox Bay. The procedure involved lots of

cutting, lifting and washing. Lots of residents from our community came to watch as this fossil was pulled from the earth. It has been decided that this amazing find will be kept here in Raglan to be treasured for generations to come. Before this

fascinating creature was pulled from the earth, local kaumatua Sean Ellison came and gave the site a blessing with karakia. As the tide moved in inch by inch, everyone was getting a bit more worried. They had to haul the heavy pieces of fossil onto the sand where they were safe and sound. Carefully the big blocks of rock containing the fossils were transported to the Raglan museum where they will be on display for our Raglan community and visitors. The fossil is a great find for our locals to enjoy, and will be admired for decades to come. The Year 8 Media Crew was lucky enough to catch this scoop, and spent the day covering the event and observing the excavation. Students Explore Passions in Year 5/6

hat do you think when people say ‘learning’? Sitting on a mat? Listening to a teacher? Well, the Year 5/6s have different ideas. Independence. Drills. Hammers. This is what is happening with the passion projects of the students of Raglan Area School. For a couple of hours a week, Year 5/6 are given time to explore their passion. “Passion projects are student-led projects based around an interest of their choice,” explains Matua Liam, one of the Year 5/6 teachers. Students start by submitting a proposal to their teacher about what passion they would like to investigate. Then, they put their idea into action. There are a variety of projects. Some students are creating and publishing books to display in the

library and junior block. Another group made a soccer club to coach junior students. Sometimes, passion learning reaches beyond school boundaries. A great example of this is a group in E1 who are making a skateboard with help from Juan Gomez from Raglan Cruisers. They have sold rafﬂe tickets to the community for it, and will be using the money for camp. You can still buy rafﬂe tickets for $5 at the RAS office. “I enjoy teaching other people about my passion,” Explains Kye Nguyen. Passion learning gives students a chance to investigate their passions in school and take it further into Raglan. It is an enjoyable way to learn and socialise with others. aglan Area School is delighted to announce their newly elected second-year-running Board of Trustees Student Representative, Charlie Irvin. 17-year-old Charlie really felt that she could inﬂuence change and input student voice; these are some of the reasons why she decided to run for Representative. Charlie describes herself as a workaholic who enjoys expressing her feelings. She has acted as the Student Representative for the board of trustees for one year now, and is looking forward to doing a second. Some of the responsibilities that come with being the student rep are major, others less

intimidating. Charlie herself was part of the appointment process for our new principal. Being on the board is no walk in the park. With meetings to attend and decisions to be made at governance level, Charlie gets just enough time to switch between schoolwork, homework, friends and board responsibilities. By putting her hand up for this role, Charlie has been given equal Board of Trustee member rights and the ability to inﬂuence change. Charlie recognises the incredible importance of having students speak out, and hopes that in the future more opportunities like this can be introduced. n Friday, November 2, Te Uku school proudly hosted the 2018 Western Cluster Tabloids sports.There were 7 schools in the Western Cluster. They are Te Uku, Raglan, Whatawhata, Te Kowhai, Horotu, Waitetuna and Te Mata. By 8.45 all the schools had arrived and were settled in their classrooms. At 9.00 Mr Butler called all schools to assemble in front of the Staff room where they were welcomed. By this time all the Te Uku Tabloid Coaches were ready at their game stations. The Te Uku School leaders lead their allocated schools to their first station. All schools rotated around to all of the 14 Tabloid Games. Over three hundred children participated in this event. Also to the Year 4’s and 5’s who were able to lead children to the activities such as sack race, swiss ball soccer, bean bag bucket throw, blanket ball and many more awesome games. We asked some children about their perspective. We interviewed kids from D2 and here is what they said ... Tuff Challenge

ctober 26, 2018 was the day that Tu Uku Year 7 & 8’s had their Tuff Challenge. Every term Year 7 & 8’s take part in an adventurous challenge. These Tuff Challenges take us out of our comfort zone and make us face new experiences. Some of us had not tried Abseiling before. We travel fromm Te Uku to Raglan to meet at Gareth’s place. He is the main person at Raglan Rock. We were fitted with wet suits & from there we were taken in two vans. We made our way down to the narrow creek at the base of Mt Karioi. We were split into two big groups, one went down the river, the other up it. Gareth and his group from Raglan Rock took us through the creek creating a great experience for us to explore. The first group learnt how to abseil. Then after some instruction they knew how to climb the rock face! Challenging but scarey all at the same time. The second group first had to crawl through a cramped tunnel, walk down the rocky river and then jumped off the several waterfalls. The water

felt fresh and luckily we all had wetsuits although some of the kids in our class got given thin wetsuits so they got a little cold. We then travelled to the middle of the river and met up with the other group at a huge frenzy of waterfalls. Some abseiled others jumped. Then we swapped sides and travelled on. We interviewed some year seven and eights to see what they thought and here’s what they said. “I enjoyed trudging through the river.” said one student “I liked jumping off the waterfalls. It gave me so much adrenaline.” said another. “It was awesome mostly because I hadn’t experience it before and also because it was so fun” said another person. We then walked back to the vans and drove back to Gareth’s where we ate lunch. When we were getting out of our wet suits we wished we were still in the refreshing water jumping of the rocky waterfalls. There was a 21km, 10km and 5km run. All the money raised will go to resurface our school court with new basketball and netball posts and hoops. Thanks to our cool community that made it all possible!

The loose ground beneath my feet crunches as we cross our way up the towering high hills. My legs slowly form into jelly as I trudge my way through the mud. The rain buckets down on the runners. In the distance we hear a roar of people cheering us on as we get closer to the finish line. My heart is pounding like thunder in my ears. I have finished!! Joy, the pain, the tears all at the same time. By Ayla and Seren 11 years old I can see the ooey gooey mud everywhere. I can taste the delicious burgers. I can feel the rain drops on my head.

We do this by running the bi-annual Food Drive where our Surfside team heads out and runs the streets, going door-to-door asking for non-perishable donations. This will take place on Saturday, December 8, from 9am until 1pm. No one will ask for money, although any donation

will be accepted and a receipt can be provided. Our friendly team will be easily recognised in their blue Surfside Church T-Shirts and accompanied by a Surfside Church marked van. Donations can be collected from your doorstep if that suits you best. The food goes towards assisting local families and individuals facing a crisis and requiring support. Summer has finally arrived and Raglan/Whaingaroa is looking stunning! While you’re lounging by, playing in or having fun on the water this summer, keep an eye out for the wee Maui dolphins. With your help together we CAN save the world’s rarest dolphins: Fisherman? Don’t use set nets where dolphins may be found; Stay with your net – if you see dolphins, lift your net immediately Boatie? Use a ‘no wake’ speed within 300m of dolphins; Don’t swim with Māui dolphins or attempt to feed them Cat lover? Don’t dispose of cat litter or other animal feaces in toilets, drains or stormwater systems – this may contribute to the spread of parasitic disease to the dolphins Everyone: Report all sightings to 0800 DOC HOT line (0800 362 468) Remember “Rounded fin? Send it in!” - Recycle and don’t litter – yet another reason to keep our beaches and public spaces clean of litter: Māui may swallow or get entangled in rubbish! - Spread the word - the more people that know about Maui dolphins and their plight - the more people will care! WEC is planning to have ‘Marine Matters Rangers’ out at boat ramps and beaches this summer - working to raise awareness of Maui dolphin conservation, plastic pollution and other marine issues. We want Raglan’s summer visitors to love our beautiful environment us much as we do!

Maui Dolphin Day has been set for the 23rd of March next year - get your thinking caps on this summer and start designing your raft for the recycled raft race!

Xtreme changes

Xtreme would like to give a huge mihi to our wonderful community! Xtreme has gone through some big changes over the past couple of months, and you, our wonderful community have embraced what we are doing and made it all so much easier! Kerbside Collections – 4 days per week Spreading the kerbside collection to 4 days per week, has ensured our collection team’s safety, and wellbeing. The team no longer need to rush to complete the collection in 2 days, previously they were often working well into the early evening, working all day in the wet during the winter months, and all day in the heat in summer. Now the team can complete the longest run by 1.30pm. Site Open 7 Days per Week Opening the site at 12.30 - 5.00pm during the week, and 10.00am - 5.00pm on weekends, gives our customers heaps more opportunity to shop at Kaahus Nest or sort their waste and recycling . The Xtreme staff can now process, upcycle and create masterpieces in the morning, and concentrate on our customers in the afternoons. Kaahus Nest has had some much needed TLC, and renovations. Come up and have a look!! We have lots more furniture on display, tons of clothes for sale and heaps of great shoes! When entering the site you will see new road marking, signage, and parking spaces. Please take note of these when driving into the site. There are designated parks for shoppers, and road marking for those who are dropping off landfill and recycling. No Drop offs after 4.30 please. Xtreme employs 40 + members of our community. Your continued support helps members of your community support their whanau. Thanks again Raglan!

Growing together Locals have been digging in at the Whaingaroa Community Gardens over the last few months and now they’re booming!

The Whaingaroa Environment Centre supports a group of volunteers (the ‘Garden Guardians’) who coordinate work at the gardens and help keen gardeners (from green-fingered experts to total gardening novices) growing food and skills together. The gardens are a place for our community to connect with each other and with our local environment. It’s amazing how good it feels to get your hands dirty and grow food! These are your gardens Raglan! We’d love to see you there: individuals, families, everyone! Kids love it! There’s plenty of summer plantings to do, opportunites to learn at workshops coming up and we need lots of volunteers to enjoy the bounty of the summer harvest! Come join us as at a working bee this summer - we’re there from 9.30am-10.30am on the 1st Saturday, 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month. You can find the gardens tucked in, just behind the Raglan Police Station on Wi Neera Street. We hope to see you there soon!
