New health clinic building finishes well ahead of schedule

W

ith the new building finished ahead of schedule, the team at West Coast Health Clinic (WCHC) will be moving from their current clinic to a new purpose-built premises across the road at the start of October. The team will remain the same but will trade under a new name which will be unveiled at a dawn blessing on October 1.

The new building is 478m2 with 17 parking spaces out the front and is almost double the space of the old building. The new building has been designed so it can grow with the community and whilst an X-ray facility is currently not feasible, allowances have been made to incorporate this at a later date with the help of the Raglan Community Health Trust.

Almost ten years in the making, the project initially started in 2010 when the then WCHC business partners planned for a new space to accommodate the growing health needs of the Raglan community. In 2011 a

feasibility study for an integrated family health centre was completed, with seven possible sites identified as potentially suitable in Raglan’s CBD. After many years planning, the property at 9 Wallis St was selected as the best option.

“We are very excited to be moving to a purpose-built premises that we hope will serve the community for many years to come.” said clinic manager Michelle Meenagh.

Patient privacy was one of the top priorities in the design process, in addition to functionality and sustainability. The new waiting area has a very high ceiling to create a spacious light-filled waiting area.

While the building is single storied for now, the foundations are strengthened so the building can be expand to a second storey if the space is needed.

The building has a total of 16 consulting rooms and a large treatment area that accommodates three additional separate rooms that allow for more privacy and confidentiality. The old curtain partitions between beds will no longer exist.

There is a large meeting room designed to maximise team work, facilitate collaboration with other health providers

and to enable group education sessions for patients. The team also hope to hold early morning and lunchtime yoga or pilates sessions in this space.

“We have the potential to add an electric car charging station that will be available to use after hours,” added Michelle.

The build has been completed by Cemac Construction, finishing well ahead of schedule, business owner Dr Mike Loten would highly recommend them for any commercial projects. As the business is funding this project without any financial assistance from the DHB or Ministry of Health, and in line with Raglan’s environmentally friendly ethos, most of the current medical equipment will be reused in the new premises and replaced only when needed. The clinics consultation fees will stay the same while the supplementary services will have a price review in the coming months There are opportunities to rent clinic spaces within the building and prospective tenants will be invited to preview the building over the next two weeks. Raglan Naturally leading the charge for communityled development

Members of the Bizworx team are well embedded in the Raglan community. Four of the staff have served or are currently serving as trustees on various school boards and health organisations. Additionally, they provide services and software programmes in support of local not-for-profit groups. Among others, Lynne has personally been involved with Xtreme Zero Waste and Raglan Radio throughout her years in Raglan. Community involvement is a key marketing strategy for any business, as it is an opportunity to build relationships.

Lynne explained that reputation is everything as most of their clients come via word-of-mouth. Beyond that Lynne points out that a partnership with the Raglan Business Chamber creates important networking opportunities and says that “many people do not value the role of the Business Chamber enough.” Her recommendation is to be highly visible and one way to do that is through the local business hub, the Raglan Business Chamber.

In addition to her marketing advice, Lynne reminds her clients that paying tax is good news because it means you’ve done well in your business ventures. After twenty years in her career and having worked with a variety of business Lynne reflects on the importance of being flexible.

aglan Naturally have had a win for community-led planning teaming up in a five-year partnership with the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).

Selected to be part of the DIA Community-led Development Programme, Raglan Naturally coordinator Gabrielle Parson says it is an exciting opportunity for the community and a win for continuing grassroots development here.

“The programme is a perfect fit for Raglan Naturally as it uses the same community-led approach we have already been working with. It has been about working together, building on our strengths, encouraging wide participation, developing local leaders and an action plan to measure and celebrate our achievements,” she says.

One of 19 communities across the country and one of the first in the Waikato, the Raglan Naturally partnership will also mean an access to resources to help with the on-going work and development of Raglan Naturally and for supporting projects that come out of the Raglan community plan.

Jenny Nand (DIA Advisor) has been following the Raglan Naturally journey for a while now and after meeting with us and attending our community open day she

could see we were working on the same guiding principles that form the foundation of the DIA’s programme.

“The DIA are really excited to work with us and to take learning from this partnership to further enhance their community-led development programme across New Zealand,” Gabrielle says Raglan Naturally members Lisa Thomson, Heather Thomson, Sadra Saffari and Gabrielle will attend a DIA communityled workshop in Wellington and will meet with the other communities involved in the programme.

“The programme will also help us make connections with like-minded communities which will help us build on what we are doing in Whaingaroa.”

Gabrielle says the team are finalising the Raglan Naturally plan from which they will be able to prioritise projects for community action and to feed into the Waikato District Council’s long-term plan.

Prof’s first public lecture promises close-to-home appeal

aglan professor and former competition snowboarder Holly Thorpe will reveal in a public address next week how a handful of youth-focused counterculture sports – including the one for which her hometown of 15 years is renowned – have made it into the Olympics.

A new professor this year, she will explain in a lecture entitled ‘Sport for a better world’ just how the rapid rise and development of informal action sports like surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing around the world have led to their inclusion in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

This has been a huge decisionmaking process by the International Olympic Committee and one involving a lot of cultural politics, Holly told the Chronicle. “The IOC has been losing younger viewers and is trying now to bring in new sports.”

Holly has spent a decade-anda-half studying from a sociological viewpoint the rapid rise and development of these sports which, she says, first came about in the 60s and 70s.

Now the 38-year-old academic – a one-time Fullbright Fellowship scholar at a prestigious university in Washington DC – is looking forward to delivering Tuesday

night’s “professorial address” at Waikato University, where her work is based.

Her address at the on-campus Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts is part of a public lecture series that introduces the university’s newest professors like Holly to the community, and gives them a chance to demonstrate how their work is having a real impact on the world around us.

Holly will include in her talk her involvement in the Marsden project for which she has researched young people’s use of informal sports – like skateboarding and parkour – in helping them recover and rebuild their communities after crises such

as the Christchurch earthquake and New Orleans’ devastating Hurricane Katrina.

She will also outline her work on girls and women in sport and physical culture. Recent research signposts important changes in society that are affecting women and girls’ options and addressing inequalities, she says. “There are now huge opportunities for women in IOC sports.”

Holly came to live in Raglan in 2004 when first studying for her PhD at Waikato, which she describes as an ambitious university “quickly rising in the (international) ranks”.

It courts post-graduate students from all over the world, she says,

a number of whom choose to live in Raglan while looking to balance lifestyle with study. She cites colleague and associate professor Belinda Wheaton as another university academic who now lives here.

Raglan’s certainly become a special place for Holly. She and her American partner Dr Jose Borrero met here back in 2007, downtown at what was then Aqua Velvet cafe. Jose is a coastal engineer with Whale Bay-based marine consultancy eCoast, and the couple now have two young children whose care they juggle with work which often involves overseas travel.

Holly – who also enlists her mother Kris to help look after their children – is grateful she and Jose can make family life work for them here in Raglan with their respective work commitments.

Fortunately Jose “gets (understands) the academic life”, Holly laughs of their relationship.

A new challenge on the horizon for Kiwi entrepreneur H e’s known as Billy Black to most, the character Barry Woods created as part of his Kiwi Culture Show at the world-famous Woodlyn Park in Waitomo.

Billy was born of necessity; In the beginning Barry had been doing the 20-year old show as Barry for three years solid, every day of the week. He was burning out, family life was taking a hit and the selfconfessed workaholic needed a break.

“Over the years he (Billy Black) keeps getting compared to the likes of Barry Crump, Fred Dagg’s Trevs and Billy T James. Having a character meant I could train up other Billy Blacks.”

And so, a family of Blacks was born, as Barry likes to say, and there’s been a female Black in the family as well.

Barry’s show gave the audience a taste of authentic Kiwi country life but he’s most proud of the learning experiences he wove into the show for both young and old.

“It’s a bit of science, maths, the whole lot and the children love it cos they’re having fun.”

Barry sold the business he built from scratch over a year ago now. He’d transformed the awardwinning property in Waitomo into a park renowned for its unique accommodation, with subterranean Hobbit holes, a World War II boat,

a 1950s train and Bristol Freighter plane among the accommodation options.

He’s ready to move on to the next journey as a ‘just over 60-yearold, taking the Billy Black show on the road.

With his wife Judy, Barry’s selling off property in Raglan, including the couple’s home on Norrie Ave and a couple of rentals and heading off on tour in an American caravan.

The travelling show is nothing new, Barry developed a mobile show to take to the corporate sector several years ago and he’s always been welcomed with open arms at A&P shows around the country.

“My accountant said I was mad selling up, the business was doing so well but I’ve always thought it’s good to get out when the market is high.”

Reinventing himself is nothing new to Barry, starting life cutting a farm in Taharoa from scrub with his father, he left that as a young “fullah” to take up shearing with the end goal of owning a farm himself one day.

He travelled the world shearing and made enough money to buy his own farm in Otorohanga in the late 80s.

In the late 90s, he moved into tourism, like his father before him Barry says he’s always been a bit

Barry Woods on the deck of his Norrie Ave home. of a visionary and although people thought he was mad back then, he had a feeling tourism would be the next big market in New Zealand.

And the idea for Woodlyn Park and the Kiwi Culture show was born one night scribbling away on a piece of paper at the kitchen table.

Much of his notions, imaginings and ‘business’ research is done this way, late into the night.

Now, it’s time to take it a little bit easy – as much as a man like Barry can – look at some different opportunities.

“I’m lucky I can pick and choose what I might do in the future.”

He’s been doing some research on a couple of ventures but high on his list is penning a novel based on his life.

“I’ve got so many stories to tell from my travels overseas. I want

the stories told through a character like Billy Black,” he says.

In the meantime, there are houses to sell, downsizing to be done and he’s still making improvements to the property on Norrie Ave. “Life goes on.”

can I possibly do about it?’, says co-founder Tesh Randall (aka Mrs Coconut), “But unless businesses start taking responsibility for the emissions they create, things will never get better.”

They realised the logical starting point was to begin tracking the impact they currently have. “If you don’t measure your emissions, how will you go about reducing them?” points out co-founder Seb Walter (aka Mr Coconut).

Raglan Coconut Yoghurt worked with Enviro-Mark Solutions, a government-owned environmental certifications company, over a 5 month period, gathering data about their operations and measuring their emissions in all areas of the business, including freight, fuel,and power usage.

They also put together a road-map for the future, setting realistic targets for reduction and improvements. Tesh says, “We found that our emissions mainly came from freight, waste,and

electricity usage. We’re planning to improve freight consolidation, reduce waste to landfill, and change to a 100% renewable electricity supplier to reduce these impacts.”

This was independently audited in July 2019, and they have now received their carboNZero certification, joining the ranks of forward-thinking companies like Yealands Estate Wines and Antipodes Water Company.

The carboNZero programme is accredited by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) and was the world’s first to be accredited under ISO 14065. Its certification mark is recognised in over 60 countries through the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

It’s been another great season with some good results throughout all grades. The enjoyment the kids get from playing football and the team environments that develop friendships as well as learning

What team do you play for?

I play for the Raglan Orcas U12 Girls Who is your coach?

My dad, Yannis, has been our coach for the last three years.

What's it actually like to have your Dad as the coach?

Well it's great because I'm really comfortable around him so I can voice my opinions really clearly without feeling shy or embarrassed. Also if another girl on the team has a problem they can tell me and I can tell Dad. The team gets along really well with Dad, he's grown on us!

For a while it wasn't that cool cos we didn't have a second goal keeper and he pretty much invited one player to play both halves as goal keeper... five games in a row!

I like to play one half in goalie and one half striker....its feels good to stop the other team

scoring goals, and awesome to get some goals on attack with my friends.

What's your Dad's coaching style like?

He pushes us hard, we do lots of fun games that improve tactics and skills.

I'd say has “sorta” casual in his training approach.

He's really passionate in games and his voice is pretty loud along with the supporters on the sidelines every Saturday.

How has the team performed this season?

After tough grading games against some much bigger girls we got put into a really good grade, and most of our games have been draws.

All the girls have a great team spirit and whenever we lose or get tired, we bounce right back and and GO for it!

Mid way through the season one of our teammates Hariana fell in a game and broke her arm really badly, that was scary and all our team came together even stronger, we stopped that game at 2-2 for another draw:) Its really cool to go down to Papahua fields on a Saturday to play and watch all the other 9 $ that9pk Raglan teams, and its cool there are so many girls playing football in Raglan.

Interview with Karioi Orca's coach: Yannis Petzold How would you summarise the season for the Orca's ?

Kia ora.

It's been a good season. We had mostly the same team from last year plus three new girls joined.

We also stepped up into a older grade and larger teams and fields.

Initially that was a bit of a challenge, fitness at the beginning of season plus going straight into tough grading games.

Team play and ball skills and spacial awareness all evolved though the season. We also started to play in fixed positions.

We had some really nice plays that had our parents and supporters on the side line excited!

And most importantly the girls had fun.

What is the best thing for you about the coaching experience?

I like the rhythm of it, being lucky enough to be able to give Wednesday afternoon for training and Saturday mornings at a game.

I have a cool connection with the girls in the Orcas and I think we mostly have fun as a team.

I have got a bit desperate a couple of times, especially after school on a Wednesday when listening can be a bit hard for the kids.

An occasional column featuring volunteers in our community

f you have attended any community event or group get together then you would have seen Pauline Abrahams at some stage. A busy bee involved in most groups helping older members of our community, we chat with Pauline about her volunteer work.

Group needed a secretary and l volunteered, it was the best thing I ever did! I had an insight of what was needed for the elderly in Raglan. Social media was becoming the main source of communication and many seniors were missing out on what was going on in Raglan.

elderly relatives, I had an insight as to what challenges faced our aging population, especially elderly caregivers. My Mum is 99 and has memory loss so this is an area I am particularly interested in, especially prevention.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

Being a part of the volunteer community and meeting other like minded people. I have become aware of the many volunteers, especially amongst the elderly, and have been inspired by their dedication.

Tell us about some of the things that you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I like Gardening and take my surplus produce to the Crop Swap. I am an artist and create pictures in Encaustic Wax. I enjoy different crafts and recording my family history, song writing,singing and dancing, the latter made possible thanks to Belinda and her Nia Dance Group. I was a teacher for 40 years so I love to share what I have learned. Having studied Kinesiolgy and Natural Therapy, and I love to help people develop skills to stay healthy. Timebank has given me this opportunity, and also an opening to learned new ideas. Above all I love spending time with my family and friends and walking the beach.
