This week the country moved to COVID-19 Alert Level 3, which means that some businesses are allowed to start operating again. Essentially a step to kick start the economy but not our social lives, as the Prime Minitser has put it.

The Chronicle had hoped that we would be able to start delivering the Chronicle to urban letterboxes again

The over 70s according to Siouxsie Wiles (the lady scientist with the bright pink hair) we are now at the most vulnerable time, and must if possible stay within our ‘bubbles'.

Avoid joining other family ‘bubbles’ as our grown up children are returning to the work force and it is thought they may pose a possible risk of contracting COVID-19. Though they may not get seriously ill, as we have seen on the news, the virus can be deadly for those over 70.

We have played our part so far, and now we need to continue to avoid physical contact with anyone outside our bubble and continue social distancing, which means keeping six feet from friends and family. We rejoice that the younger generation can now get start getting back into the work force.

Maybe you can find ways to support mothers with children trying to work from home. This morning I spent an hour talking with my 5 year old grandson in Sydney, It was a bit ‘hit and miss’ and the reception not brilliant, the contact kept cutting out and the sound not the best. However he had a ball and I enjoyed bonding with my grandchild across the ditch, and hopefully giving my daughterin- law a bit of a reprieve from the endless 5 year old's questions.

The ANZAC weekend provided a distraction during the lockdown and the weather was very mild enabling small dawn gatherings around the neighbourhood. Tributes were left at the cenotaph, Lest We Forget. The

We send condolences to the family of one of our senior members Mary Robson who passed away last week.

Our thoughts are with those who have lost elderly relatives to COVID-19.

My own family celebrated a ‘virtual birthday party on Zoom’ for my Mother who turned 100 on April 27. Her offspring gathered from three continents, helping to create some lasting memories. She even appeared on her favourite TV programme Look North UK, holding her telegram from the Queen.

Don’t wait for a celebration to contact an elderly relative or an old friend, do it now, tomorrow may be too late. Meanwhile keep supporting each other, ask for help if you need it.

e’s training to climb a 20,000-foot Alaskan peak but to “keep it local” – and celebrate the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown – Dave Williams ran every road in Raglan last Sunday, a marathon effort which raised more than $1600 for mental health.

“It’s definitely up there as one of the more hilly towns in New Zealand,” Dave told the Chronicle of Raglan, where he’s lived and trained fulltime now for well over a year after previously commuting from Auckland most weekends.

The Wintec tutor in outdoor adventure education began his challenge – which was registered with the ‘Everydayhero’ website – from his Violet St home at 6.30 Sunday morning. It took him six-and-a-half hours to run all the streets in town and then the length of Wainui Rd out to Whale Bay. One of the hardest parts was the slog up Upper Wainui Rd, he reckons, knowing he then had to backtrack a bit and find the energy for the final push out to Manu Bay and on to Whale Bay. Dave had already done the 42.2km

marathon distance by the time he reached Wainui Reserve.

All up, he says, his Every Road in Raglan Challenge came to 54 kilometres.

That included a lot of unavoidable to-ing and fro-ing, particularly in Raglan town itself.

Dave says one of the high points of his day was actually completing his 71st marathon overlooking the “empty” surf from the top of the reserve, at the spot where he’d proposed to wife Lynn.

Another highlight came early on – running Hills Rd at dawn to see the sun come up and to reflect on an Anzac Day like no other.

The 35 year old is no stranger to personal challenges. His lifelong mission is to scale seven of the world’s highest peaks from sea level in a fundraiser for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

Dave has ticked off four of those already: Tanzania’s Mt Kilimanjaro, Russia’s Mt Elbrus, Australia’s Mt Kosciuszko and Argentina’s Mt Aconcagua.

Alaska’s Mt Denali is next on his list, to be followed by Antarctica’s Mt Vinson Massif and finally Nepal’s Mt Everest.

His sea-to-summit challenge over seven continents – Sea2Summit7 – is about “never giving up no matter how tough things get”, says Dave, whose motivation comes from having lost two adventurous young friends to depression.

Meantime he’s also looking forward to a few challenges closer to home. Having enjoyed taking part in the Waitetuna Wind Farm Trail Run recently, he’d now also like to tackle both the Karioi Trail and Karioi Classic.

Dave’s in awe of the running, cycling, surfing, kayaking and rock-climbing opportunities right at our doorstep and is eyeing other ways he might help raise awareness of – and funds for – the mental health of young Kiwi men in particular.

Helicopters and fire crews battled massive blaze at Wainamu Beach

Helicopters were called in to drop water on the steep terrain where the blaze burned.

elicopters were called into battle a large scrub fire stretching 500m along a cliff above Wainamu Beach.

Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the blaze on Wednesday night but were unable to reach the fire with their appliances and the crew spent the night keeping an eye on the fire.

The Raglan crew were sent home on Thursday morning and Waikato principal rural fire officer Matt Cook took over the management of the fire with Te Akau Volunteer Fire Brigade doing the groundwork.

Initially just one helicopter was called in and a second was called about 10.30am as the fire had warmed up overnight and early Thursday morning, creating a flareup.

Firefighters managed to stop the fire from getting into the mountain bike track and pine trees but it tore through pampas grass and gorse on the cliff.

The steep terrain made it difficult for the firefighters to tackle the blaze by foot but they managed to get it under control about midnight on Thursday.

The crews returned to the fire on Friday to dig out any hot spots and Cook says they continued to keep an eye on the fire over the weekend.

Tainui hapū environmental spokesperson and local Te Kōpua resident Angeline Greensill was alerted to the fire by her son and called it in around 8.30pm on Wednesday.

A key player in the sand dune restoration in the area, Angeline and her son dug out a fire break and bucketed water to dampen down the area between the dunes and the pampas.

“I was worried that no-one would be able to do anything (for the dunes). From about 2003 to now we have been restoring the dunes and I thought I’m not going to let this go up in flames. We were very fortunate that the wind was blowing in an easterly direction and it took everything out to sea.”

She says the area where the fire raged is known as Te Upoko and was likely a lookout point for the local Tainui hapū Ngāti Hounuku.

The cause of the fire is still unknown but Cook says human error is probable and it highlighted the need for people to take care.

“It’s a public area and there’s evidence of people camping in there (Wainui Reserve), but that could just be day camping or picnicking. I doubt that it was deliberate – if you were going to set it deliberately you would have set it in the pines.”

Cook is grateful to the Raglan community for the support offered to the firefighters.

"Thanks to the Raglan community, like the Surf Lifesaving Club who have been really helpful and a lot of kind wishes from the public which has been really nice.”

The Waikato region went into an open fire season last week and Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Frank Turner is urging people to hold off lighting any fires until after the country had been through the whole lockdown process.

Franks says a lot of people at home during lockdown are using the time to burn off rubbish and garden debris in their backyard, and the brigade want to avoid unnecessary call outs for smoke or, worse still, call outs to fires that have got out of hand.

If you are able to safely do this repair work yourself, you can do so at any alert level.

If you need to get supplies from a hardware store, you can do this at Alert Levels 1, 2 and 3. At Alert Level 3, you won’t be able to physically go into a hardware store. You will instead need to order by phone/online and have your supplies delivered, or collect them (e.g. through a drive-through system).

You can get tradespeople to come to your home to do any repair work at Alert Levels 1, 2 and 3. However, you and your tradespeople need to ensure the relevant public health measures at each alert level are met. This includes the physical distancing requirements at Alert Levels 2 and 3.

At Alert Level 4, tradespeople can only do work on your property that is immediately needed to maintain human health and safety or avoid significant environmental harm.

The relevant public health measures at Alert Level 4 must be met.

Tradespeople will be able to get the supplies they need for any such work at Alert Levels 1 through 4.

Surf Lifeguards issue warnings as more beachgoers expected at Level 3

A recent fire at Wainamu Beach is a timely reminder that while we may now be in Level 3, we still need to be mindful of preesure put on emergency services when things go wrong.

All were from the East Coast - our sister coast and several shared a family name. All were killed on 31st December, 1917, in the treacherous Flanders Fields.

They are not forgotten.

Surf lifesaving has no planned patrols until Labour Weekend 2020, but in the interim the Northern Region’s 16 ECOS will be continue to be available, working with other emergency services should anyone get into trouble, says Williams.

He says lifeguards are relying on a sensible return to the coast from the public as the lockdown eases. “We know the public has it in them to return to coastal activities safely, in alignment with alert level requirements.

However, our ability to respond to accidents arising from reckless behaviours and our tolerance for those behaviours is going to be somewhat less than normal.

“Now is not the time to be taking up new activities or challenges on the coast or stretching yourselves physically when getting back into the water.”

He urged all those considering going to the coast for recreation to check out the conditions on the Safeswim website (www. safeswim.org.nz) and to be extra-vigilant about observing the key safety rules and recommendations around social-distancing and hand sanitation.

Williams SLSNR has been busy over the last few weeks redefining its operations and

funding in these imperfect times and advising the Government on sound coastal use during the crisis. “We’ve seen an erosion of our historical income streams at the same time as the COVID-19 lockdown has required us to rethink and review how we work as an emergency service; for the foreseeable future it has changed the core business of lifeguarding.”

“With the threat of the virus, how we approach rescues and management of patients and victims has to change because of the additional health risks. Our priority is to ensure we are able to continue to respond effectively to in-water incidents during these challenging times.”

In concert with these challenges, the organisation is facing an unprecedented funding crisis as current funding sources have been eroded overnight, says Williams. “Our organisation has always been mindful of this day, given our on-going reliance on volatile funding sources to meet core expenditure costs, and right now it’s more important than ever to receive further support so that we can to respond to COVID-related challenges and the expected boom in coastal use arising out of a localisation of recreation in the near future.

“Although Surf Life Saving has largely been community-funded, this model needs to be reviewed immediately in light of current events to ensure our organisation and the critical service we provide remains viable.
