ast week Raglan Area School students took part in their social action campaigns where they went out on to the streets of Raglan to fight for something they felt passionate about.

We caught up with four girls who successfully campaigned SuperValue Raglan to ban single use plastic bags from their supermarket.

How did this project start?

As four young girls who have been living in Raglan all our lives we have begun to notice the amount of single use plastic lying around our community. We decided that we then needed to make a change, not only for the environment, but for the future of the Raglan youth, and potentially the rest of the world!

Is this part of your studies at school?

Yes, but although we were assigned a task to complete, we didn’t really see it as a school project. We saw it as an opportunity to use our passion of

So what’s involved?

We had to approach the manager of Supervalue to see if he would be on board and support our idea. We also rang up companies that supply cotton/tote bags to see if they would be willing to donate some that we could give out to the public. Thankfully, after many phone calls and emails, we finally found a couple sponsors who were generous enough to donate 150 tote bags (from The Bag Planet) and 200 paper bags!!

What is your goal here?

Our goal is to eliminate plastic produce bags in our local supermarket (Supervalue). Although we managed to convince Supervalue to replace their plastic produce bags with paper, it wasn’t easy, but we were determined to make a change and we couldn’t be happier with the results. In saying that, we would like to continue to campaign for less plastic bag use for the rest of Raglan, and if all goes well, at the end of our journey we will have a healthy, plastic free environment to live in.

ura Reo ki Poihakena is opening its kūaha (door) to prospective te reo Māori learners on Tuesday, November 27.

The open day starts at 10.30am with a powhiri at Poihakena Marae followed by a cup of tea, rākau demonstration and information sharing.

te reo, while students who take the day classes (twice a week, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, Mondays and Tuesdays) are fast-tracked in their language acquisition.

As a second language learner herself, Neria says, learning the language was like looking at the world through different eyes.

“I feel a huge sense of gratitude being able to express myself in te reo Māori, as well as teaching and sharing it with others.”

Connecting to Aotearoa is often the incentive for students at the kura (school) to learn the language, many of whom are from overseas.

Shona Butchart and Alyssa Sealock, from Scotland and the United States respectively, both felt an obligation to learning the

indigenous language of their adopted country.

“I have more of a connection to the country I live in. Learning te reo Kura Reo ki Poihakena and culture is a big part of that,” Shona says.

“Learning the language of where you live is the best way to connect to the place,” Alyssa says.

Intermediate and beginners learn together and the levels working side-by-side is the embodiment of the Māori tuakana/ teina philosophy (older person helping younger person).

Te Ataarangi developed by Neria’s mother Dame Katarina Mataira is the teaching method for kura reo and classes are total immersion using rākau (cuisenaire rods) to learn instead of pen and paper.

Neria says normalising the language is an important part of regenerating and maintaining the language and everyone is encouraged to take risks in the nurturing environment of the kura.

“It’s great when our students feel comfortable going into town for a coffee and speaking Māori, or using it in their homes with their tamariki (children).”

Former salon space transformed into stylish Pilates studio and health bar

ou can get a drink at the bar of the latest business to open downtown – but it

won’t be competing for custom with the Harbour View Hotel next door.

That’s because Lifted, which opened its doors last weekend in the old Mousey Brown hair salon

premises in Bow St, is a reformer Pilates studio and health bar where you can enjoy a chia pod and smoothie rather than a bowl of fries and a beer.

For Raglan-raised Raph Henderson and partner Eden Pollock – both back home in New Zealand after seven years in Perth – the venture is something of a dream-turned-reality.

The couple were looking forward to a celebratory bottle of bubbly when the Chronicle called by at closing time on Saturday.

It’s been a hectic two months since committing to the lease, says Raph, an electrician.

The 28 year olds asked Raph’s parents, Wanda Barker and Ross Henderson, to recce the premises for its suitability before signing up and returning from Perth.

Eden knew exactly what she wanted as she’s a Pilates instructor who’s worked for “multiple different studios”.

The pair say they’ve invested ”big-time” in six spring-based reformers, the Pilates apparatus for resistance training which can be wheeled aside to make way for floor exercises on mats.

Pilates is globally the preferred method of exercise for pregnancy and injury rehabilitation, Eden says, and a lot different to yoga except for the fact that both can be done on a mat.

Invented by Joseph Pilates, the discipline is “more of a postural exercise, strengthening (the body) from top to toe”, she explains.

A floor-to-ceiling mirror covers an entire wall of the small studio, while a barre – like a ballet barre – is used for strengthening techniques other than those done on the reformers and mats.

A barre fitness class is on offer as part of the Lifted programme, Eden says, with special classes for pregnancy, mums-and-bubs and men coming soon.

Eden’s also eyeing classes for seniors, while the studio’s available too for casual walk-ins wanting to improve their general fitness.

Raph reckons he will be helping out in the studio, although maybe in the background. “I do pilates but not like Eden,” he laughs. “I’m not the most flexible sort.”

He also expects to be busy as a sparkie and to continue to pursue a long-held passion for drum & bass gigs. “Raph was a favourite New Zealand DJ over there (in Perth),” Eden confides.

The couple say they’ve had great feedback and the first weekend’s classes were all booked out.

“We want it (the studio) to benefit Raglan, not just ourselves,” says Eden. “It’s a challenge but we’re confident we can do it.”

Hospital midwives strike IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

Hospital midwives at Waikato, Thames and Tokoroa hospitals who are members of the MERAS midwifery union have issued a notice to strike twice a day for two hours from Thursday 22 November until Wednesday 5 December.

This does not affect Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs).

Our priority is the safety of women and infants and we have plans in place to ensure women can access the services they need and are kept safe during the strike.

No women will be turned away from our delivery suite.

We expect the main impact on our maternity services to be the postponement of some ante-natal clinics. We will contact those women directly.

Twilight bowls underway

perfect summer’s evening greeted us on Tuesday November 13 to get our Twilight Bowls sessions started.

Eighteen teams rocked on down to get sorted and underway.

Bob welcomed everyone along, including a number of players who came after having been introduced to bowls at our Beginner’s Group Days held during winter time. Great to see you enjoying your newly acquired skills. There certainly is some great new talent happening on this scene…keep it going. There are some rather inventive team names this session, along with the ‘regulars’ from past sessions. It all adds to the fun and frivolity.

Sponsored by Top Cut Butchery, we concluded the evening with

a sausage sizzle, an ale or so, and plenty of comradeship accompanied with some healthy banter and laughter. Roll on next week.

Our Veterans Mixed Singles Event held on November 3 got rained off and so it was completed a week later and played in ‘sets’ format, which gave a different approach to the way we play: a game has 2 sets with 7 ends played in each set. If you win both the first and second sets then you have won the game. However, if you win one set each, then another end is played and whoever wins this end wins the game. It makes things interesting to have different formats of play.

Bill Bond won the final against Pim Blair, so Pim becomes the Ladies’ Winner and Bill the Men’s Winner.

Jacal Peel won the Plate final.

Saturday November 16 we held our Championship Fours event.

Teams are ‘drawn’ for this event.

The numbers were down a bit this year with only 3 teams being able to play. First up Terry Green, Heather Dalbeth, Brenda Waters and Pim Blair played against Eileen Stephens, Denis Pizer, Jack Peel and Alan Price, and were defeated.

Then the ‘Bye’ Team of Maureen Wahanga (Maws), Les Schlager, John Carr and Murray Eddy played Eileen’s team and came second.

Congratulations to all our winners in all events.

Roll ups are held every Wednesday and Saturday (unless some other function is being held).

What’s changing in our cemeteries?

A 2016 review of the Waikato District Council Cemeteries Bylaw restricted the pre-purchasing of plots only to when a relative was to be buried and restricting the number of plots that can be pre-purchased to two.

We have received feedback from the public regarding this clause and are therefore proposing to amend the bylaw so plots can be pre-purchased at any time and there will be no limit on the number of plots that can be pre-purchased.

Notice is hereby given that the Waikato District Council, for the purpose of allowing Club Targa to hold sections of the Silver Fern Rally, will close Otorohaea Trig Road and Kawhia Road for the period set out below. For the period of closure of the road, the following provision will be made for ordinary vehicular traffic which would otherwise use the roads. The road sections will be manned at intersections by clearly identifiable marshals equipped with radio communication and access will be provided in the event of an emergency.

Community Rangers (3 x part-time fixed-term roles) Our community rangers will work to raise awareness of maui dolphin conservation and marine issues over the summer period. We are looking for energetic, motivated friendly people to share their love of the marine environment. Public liaison, advocacy or education experience and knowledge of the plight of maui dolphin desirable. Must be available to work weekends.

Notice of herbicide spraying Waikato Regional Council advises that under resource consent 124871 the spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months.

Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan and include (but are not limited to): alligator weed, Manchurian wild rice, sagittaria, saltwater paspalum, Senegal tea, spartina and yellow flag iris. Herbicides to be used are haloxyfop, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr. Application method is location dependent and may be by helicopter, gun and hose, mistblower or knapsack.

Operational areas are spread throughout the region and include (but are not limited to): • Grahams Creek and Oturu wetland • Lakes Whangape and Waikare • Te Otamanui Lagoon • Waihou, Piako and Ohinemuri rivers • Waikato River (from Horotiu to Port Waikato) • Waikawau Bay • Waipā River • Whangamarino and Maramarua rivers • numerous smaller urban and rural sites.

Spraying is weather dependent and will occur during daylight hours on any day, including weekends but excluding public holidays.
