Tuakau on the other hand has a current resident population of 4639 and is projected to go to 10147 by 2045. An increase of 5508 people or 118%.

Ofcourse Raglan has visitors all year round and visitors give the impression of a much faster and higher population increase but in reality that is not the case. Further visitors as a general rule don’t have a vested interest in the town. They are……. visitors to the town.

What I think this means is that Raglan is going to have an increasing number of lock ups and/or houses on the Air BNB market.

A bit like Whangamata perhaps.

Scot's College students lending a hand in our community

L

ast week Raglan Rock welcomed back their annual school group from Wellington's Scot's College for a week of adventure and outdoor education.

Just like last year when putting their itinerary together, they insisted on the students giving back by being involved within a community project and in return creating new friendships.

The students of the 2018 camp helped Dirk from Cyclery Raglan with track maintenance at the mountain bike trails which involved a lot of weed pulling. This year they rolled up their sleeves once again and worked alongside John, Sheryl and Chris of

the Friends of Wainui Bush Reserve with maintenance within the reserve.

The boys were kept busy weeding and felling invasive plant and tree species while chatting with locals enjoying the reserve.

One was local keen award winning gardener/landscaper Murray Hartley walking his dog.

Thanks to WEC and the Tool Library for lending us the equipment to ensure we made good use of the boys time and energy to get stuck in.

The school also has kindly made a donation to FOW for purchasing trees for the upcoming planting season and to WEC for purchasing of new equipment to share within the community Tool Library.

T

his week the Chronicle sat down with Maree, owner of Raglan Rest Home and Hospital, about the many members of the community that are involved with the facility.

Maree ..Tell us about the people that volunteer their time to enrich the lives of your residents.

There are a wide variety of volunteers who help from meals-on-wheels drivers,

gardeners, musicians and craftspeople, dog handlers, mums and babies, morning tea servers, TV repairers, florists and those who come to visit and support our whanau.

No matter what the contribution it is appreciated by everyone at the Facility and enriches all of our lives. It is impossible to single out any one person or group as they all add to the fabric of what and who we are.

How about locals that help out in other ways?

The Raglan Sunset Motel donated chairs and a coffee table and other locals have

donated chairs, plants, vegetables, fruit and artworks. Many of the local tradespeople have gone out of their way to assist us in repairing, replacing and maintaining a wide variety of equipment. We always try to use locals and see this as a way of keeping Raglan strong.

Do you have other opportunities for people to volunteer their time?

There are always opportunities to volunteer – our gardeners could always do with some extra help!

The residents love trying new activities and sharing skills with a group or one-onone is a great way to get involved. This can be simple things such as cooking, knitting, writing life stories for residents, demonstrating a skill.

Our next project is to start a ʻwalking groupʼ where volunteers take one or more residents for short walks around the community.

We would like to trial a ʻMen’s Clubʼ where some activities and discussion focused more on the men is a regular event.

Any offers of help or sharing of ideas would be appreciated - we can be contacted by phone, email or by a personal visit How have you settled in as new owners of the Trust Hospital ?

The facility is called the Raglan Rest Home and Hospital with the Motto ʻLoving Hearts, Caring Handsʼ. It has not been a trust for many years, well before I purchased the Facility.

We have settled in well and recently had our first two day audit by the Ministry of Health – the results amazed us all we got 100%. This is a first for the Raglan Rest Home and Hospital and quite rare for a new operators first audit.

This is a credit to everyone who has had input into the Facility – Staff, Residents, Families, Contractors and volunteers.

The challenge is to keep if financially viable and continue to improve what we do and how we do it.

What are some of the changes that you have initiated?

We have tried to change the culture to an inclusive model – families, residents, staff and the wider community. We have worked to ensure people are, on the whole, satisfied with the service, feel included and trust us to adapt to the changing needs of all.

Physically we have purchased many pieces of equipment and essential household goods – from sheets and cutlery to dishwashers and medical equipment.

We have painted bedrooms, replaced curtains and upgraded chairs. A new outdoor gazebo has been built so there are increased options for relaxing or dining al fresco.

Consultation opens on proposed targeted rate for Raglan’s kerbside food waste collection service

Update from Raglan Naturally Raglan Naturally is our community driven planning process.

Blueprints are Waikato District Council’s current planning process for the district, including Raglan.

The community has contributed to both Raglan Naturally and Blueprints.

Raglan Naturally is working closely with the Blueprints process to ensure that there is alignment between the plans.

Once the Raglan Naturally draft plan is available, the community can compare the two plans.

The Raglan Naturally draft might help you with your Blueprint submission to see what needs to be added or changed and to choose your Blueprint priorities.

I

n 2017, Waikato District Council partnered with Xtreme Zero Waste and the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) to offer Raglan residents a kerbside food waste collection service. This service was requested by the Raglan community and up until this point has been fully funded by Council, MfE and Xtreme Zero Waste.

The service has been running since August 2017 and residents are being asked if they would be willing to pay $1.52 per week (or $79.29 per year) to have the weekly collection service continue as normal.

Along with asking if residents would be willing to pay the proposed targeted rate, Council is also asking for feedback on whether or not they use the service and if they value it.

Council understands the service has been working successfully in Raglan, having collected 218 tons of food waste from the community in the past 18 months and diverting it from landfill. The fully-funded service period is due to finish at the end of June 2019.

National Remembrance Service to be livestreamed at Turangawaewae Marae and Raglan Council Office

W

aikato District Mayor Allan Sanson, together with Turangawaewae Marae invites everyone to come together this Friday at Turangawaewae to watch the National Remembrance Service for the victims of the Christchurch mosques terrorist attack.

The event will start at 9:45am (seated) and the live broadcast of the service being held in Hagley Park in Christchurch will start at 10am.

The service will also be played live at our Raglan Office and Library from 10am.

“We welcome everyone in the Waikato district to attend and remember the victims

and those affected by the tragic events that happened on 15 March 2019, says Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson.

“It is important that we come together to remember those who lost their lives and show our support for our Muslim community.”

“It is an absolute tragedy what happened, however over the past two weeks it is our love and compassion that has defined us as New Zealanders, not hate. As our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said you will never stand alone, we stand together.”

The National Remembrance Service is jointly led by the Government of New Zealand, the city of Christchurch, Ngāi Tahu and the Muslim community.

The order of service and more details will be announced later this week.

Sarah is a familiar face to many in her other roles around town – Sew Love’s creative genius and as Xtreme Zero Waste educator Lady X. Sarah set up Sew Love as a social enterprise providing pop-up fun spaces and resources for people to be creative, learn new skills and get to know their neighbours.

“We focus on reducing landfill and strengthening communities in a fun positive way,” she says.

This philosophy is a perfect match for Sarah’s new role with TimeBank.

Passionate about community resilience, she is keen to help people understand the gifts they have to offer to the wider community.

“I love the idea of helping build resilient communities and sustainable living in different ways,” she says.

“The Raglan community was really receptive to my sewing truck. The most receptive of any of the places I visited.”

She decided to set up base in Raglan two years ago and has continued Sew Love selling her wares at the Raglan Creative Market and educating about zero waste in schools.

Sarah has ancestral roots in Raglan, her grandfather was a Sweetman and was born in Raglan and her great grandfather farmed on Te Hutewai Rd. RAGLAN AREA SCHOOL NEWS A SADD Day Out School Strike For Climate a Big Success

n March 15, schools from all around the world protested for a better future for our planet.

group of students went to a SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) workshop on Friday the 15th of March. They had a great day, met lots of new people and learnt a lot of facts about how dangerous our New Zealand roads actually are.

This was nothing new to some of our young students, but to others, it was a huge eye-opener.

It was great to realise that there was this amazing nationwide organization called SADD that actually cared about the safety of our young Kiwis.

The students participated in some workshops which in turn could be run back at our school.One of these activities was a ‘focus or fail’ test. This involved making an obstacle course for someone to complete. Once they completed it, they were given a distraction such as sending a text message on their phone while doing the course again. This was intended to show how dangerous and distracting texting while driving is.

One student got involved with a breathalyzing road check. She said, “It was quite odd being on the other side of the car door while the police gave a breath test.”

The students have come back to school now, ready to put some of their knowledge into action to help our community.

W

e went to the Peninsula to get some sticks to make our rafts.

We used flax to tie the sticks together. It was quite hard to tie the knots. We put a skinny stick and a leaf on top for the mast and sail.

Hundreds of students assembled at the top field of RAS, everyone covered in paint and sporting colourful clothing. Lots of the students made signs the day before, which were held by participants during the march to help spread their message.

After a quick practice of the protest chant, everyone set off down Norrie Avenue, flags and signs in hand. As they walked, members of the community came to join them. They marched through town, then stopped at the town centre where speeches were given by senior students Sequoia Gavin-Meade, Nikau Hansen, and Kai Woolf. People gathered around to watch and a drone was sent up into the air, which followed them as they came back to school.

This was Raglan Area School's first time participating in a worldwide strike event, and I hope that this mindset is something we continue to encourage at our school.

Bringing Waka Back

I

f you were to wander past Te Kopua on March 7, you would have seen gazebos lined across the shore of the beach, Waka racing across the harbour, and an array of coloured uniforms from schools across the Waikato dotted across the beach.

At ten minute intervals, Whaea Mahia from Sport Waikato’s Project Energize shouted out groups of four or five to clamber into a waka and paddle to the orange buoy ready to start their race. They then raced to be the first to get to the second buoy further down the harbour. Winners went on to compete in semi-finals and finals. A short prizegiving was held at the end of the day to acknowledge successes.

Leading up to the day, students from Year 5 to 8 trained in the harbour by the school peninsula. Whaea Emily, Whaea Aroha, and Whaea Helen LeLievre helped train the Raglan Area School competitors.

They trained so they could get to know the feeling of the waka on the water. “I felt

nervous and happy at the same time. I was nervous that the boat might tip. I felt happy because I tried waka for the first time,” said student Miko Hutt.

The last time waka kopapa was held was close to ten years ago. The Turangawaewae Regatta Committee asked us to bring back waka in Raglan. “It was an honour to help bring back waka, not just for the children of Raglan but for moko all across the Waikato.

The kaupapa is simple; get as many of our

moko into waka and experience hauora in a kaupapa Māori context. This event is about hauora, whakawhanaungatanga, waka, and enjoying the moana,” says Whaea Aroha.

TE UKU SCHOOL NEWS Te Uku Overnight Stay

n March 14 and 15, Years 1 to 4 students at Te Uku School had an overnight stay. They spent the night sleeping in their tents on the school field.

They had heaps of fun playing games, setting up camp, having a shared dinner, and an early morning swim. They also had a scavenger hunt for ‘Te Uku Rocks’ on their hike up Mount Baldy, that the year 7&8 students had created and hid for them. It was a huge success, everyone had heaps of fun and a lot of interesting experiences along the way.

Here is what some kids thought about their experience.

Lola - Year 2: “It was a blast. I loved doing all the games, but my favorite was the

blind buddy walk around the horse paddock because it was really exciting when you had the blind-fold on”.

his week the Marine Matters group came to talk to our

school about the Maui dolphin (popoto) and the issues and efforts being made to save them.

Raglan held its annual Maui Dolphin Day on Saturday 23, at Papahua (Te Kopua Domain). During the day there was a Recycled Raft Race held in the harbour.

The Year 7/8 students of Te Uku School competed in the recycled raft race, in support of our popoto.

Following this event, the Year 7/8 students of Te Uku School are going to Vector Wero Rafting Park in Auckland.The White Water Park is developed and operated

by Second Nature Charitable Trust. There are two trails. The first one is a beginner level 1-2 rapid, called the Tamariki river. The Te Uku Year 7/8 students will be going on this trail. The second trail is a more advanced level 3-4 rapid. They both end with a 14.8 foot waterfall! The park also offers rescue courses, stand up paddleboarding, slalom training and kayaking. The large pond (9,000m2) is used for water confidence skills, along with training our New Zealand water sport athletes. The Vector Wero Whitewater Park was developed with a tamer grade 2 river to make the park accessible, so schools like ours could learn river crossing and whitewater rafting in a safer environment.

Senior students' overnight bush adventure.

ast week, the Year 7/8 students of Te Uku School were challenged with their first adventure of the year, an overnight bush adventure.

Everybody's stomach was churning with excitement, the day had finally come.

The first job was to construct bivouacs that

were going to be big enough for a group to squeeze in snuggly, be waterproof for the predicted rain and completely possum proof.

Preparations before the bush stay were made weeks in advance, with groups negotiating on menus, designs and contributions of materials, equipment and food. The seniors also had a leadership role for the junior overnight stay.

They designed and painted Te Uku Rocks for a scavenger hunt and planned challenging team based games for the juniors overnight stay.

After supporting the junior camp games, it was dinner time. Groups needed to prepare their own dinners from their chilly bins on camp cookers. Meals became three course gourmet specials, designed more for a restaurant than for a survival challenge.

It soon became dark and the more challenging part of the evening was about to begin. Snuggling into sleeping bags students were hopeful for a good night sleep. Among the night noises of the possums, cicadas, and moreporks, were restless rustlings of sleeping bags and calls for help. A total of six brave survivors lasted the night.

The following day, bleary eyed campers headed to the Karakariki DOC reserve for a short hike into the bush, and a refreshing creek swim under the waterfall. Students made small boats and dams, while others gathered around rocks, slid down banks and searched for eels around the waterfall. The day finished with the short walk back along the Karakariki Reserve track and the packing up of bivouacs that were called home for two days.

very day this term, we have been lucky enough to swim in our school pool. It is a crystal blue colour and provides a refreshing retreat from the hot summer.

We started our swimming lessons in term one, with three instructors from 2Stroke; Olivia, Vicki and Graham. They accompanied us at the pool to give us feedback to improve on. We have all learnt new skills and developed stronger techniques in our strokes. We continued to practise our goals for freestyle, backstroke, breastroke and the optional butterfly. We celebrated our skills with a Te Uku School swimming gala. Family and friends gathered at the school pool ready to watch us. We showed off our survival skills, swimming

strokes and personal goal settings. We all had heaps of fun sharing our talents.

Each year, at the end of our school swimming programme, the Year 5 to 8 students head off to the Te Awamutu pools to get a feel for the deep water and longer length before the interschool swimming events. Getting into the cars to go to Te Awamutu pools, we all had butterflies in our stomach. Waiting for our names to be called, everybody was nervous but we had practised so hard that we knew we were ready. Kids filled the pool, splashing around, water escaping, sprawling all over the concrete. So many of us tried our hardest. We finished our day by going on the hydro slide. Well done everyone who participated in swimming this term.

ia Ora Whaingaroa! We are the new Chronicle Team for Te Mata School. Our names are (left to right) Nina George, Femka Wylie, Maria Grilli and Abi Meyer.

We are from a small diverse school on the outskirts of Raglan and are super excited to share our work with you. We will be telling you all the news and events. So far we’ve had a term full of water based activities such as Beach Day, Swimming Sports and Interschool Swimming Sports.

So enjoy being kept up to date on the schools current and upcoming events from Cross-Country to our local Agricultural Day. In these upcoming articles we will be notifying you on all the latest events, so stay tuned Raglan!

few weeks ago a couple of our senior students put forward the idea of having a Student Council to the board of trustees, it was wonderful to see such excellent support from our staff members!

Our class voted and our new Student Council team was announced. The team includes Maia Holland Smith, Jayla Waitere, Emma Gott, Maria Grilli and Star Knuiman. We just thought it would be great to have some new and young voices.

Here are some questions and the replies from the Student Council as a collective.

What do you think of having a student council at Te Mata school?

It's amazing because we have a good organization, and itś going to be really special because we will be able to have a more positive impact on the environment.

What are your goals as a participant of the student council?

We have goals to make Te Mata School a clean and tidy place where our children can make lots of memories.

Do you think that you will be able to maintain a strong student voice throughout the year?

Yes absolutely, we think that the student council will thrive and we are determined to listen to ideas the children implement.

How do you feel about the Student Council being entirely run by girls?

Even though we are all girls we will definitely include boys suggestions, be democratic and encourage the boys to take the leadership.

Swimming with Te Mata School

his week we held our annual swimming sports at Te Mata School pool. It was a great day for family to watch everybody try their best to win races, get into the interschool swimming team, and of course have some fun along the way.

The weather wasn't exactly tropical but the day still went ahead. Te Mata School may not be the biggest school in the Waikato but we will always go ahead with something we love rain, hail or shine Special thanks to Fionna Gott our lovely principal, her staff, and the Board of Trustees, who made the day possible. We would also like to thank the team who clean the pool daily. ( Lucy and Jon Meyer) On the 22nd of March the team of swimmers went to Ngaruawahia to compete in the inter school races.

They were competing against all the best swimmers from all the schools in the area so it was tough, but we still managed to get a few places.

his year we have a new addition to our staff team, Mr Macleod. We are so happy to have him join our Te Mata whanau.

He is so kind and caring. It was so nice meeting him, we are super excited to share and make a ton of special memories with him.

I was born in Auckland, I lived in Dargaville as a child and I also lived in Warkworth as a teen and went to Mahurangi College.

Te Mata Year 8 Hoodies E very year at Te Mata School our year 8 students are gifted with hoodies bearing the Te Mata Logo on the front and their surnames on the back. The hoodies are traditionally presented to the year 8s when they have earned the right and privilege.

The hoodies represent our unity, our Te Mata whanau and our seniors leadership.

They are such a huge and important part of being a year 8 at Te Mata School. The year 8s will wear their hoodies with pride to interschool events and sports days.

I have been teaching for 6 years this is my seventh. I taught 2 years in Auckland and 4 years in Hamilton.

What do think of the kids at Te Mata School?

Lively, enthusiastic, kind and adventurous.

What do you find different about Te Mata than your old school?

More kids can surf & ride horses, also most kids go to school on buses.

What do you do when you are not teaching.

I like running, fishing, spearfishing, reading and hanging out with friends and family.

Wylie, Eva Kanellias, Maria Grilli, Libby Thomson, Jayla-Rose Waitere, Regan Waitere, Lebron Scarlett, Finn Carter, Ben Steedman, Sam Christie and Isaac Limbert were presented with hoodies of their own.

I’m sure that all of them will treasure their hoodies forever and that the hoodies will guarantee that Te Mata holds a special place in their hearts forever.

Totally fine, it's all good, I love it. (laughs) What are your hobbies and goals ?

My goal is to be really good at oil painting and get better at surfing .

What about this school was appealing to you?

I like that it is smaller than my old school.

My old school had 800 kids and also the community helps out the people at Te Mata school.

Georgie: Yes, it was fantastic having someone that has had experience in Kapa Haka. She shares it with us and she helps us to learn the right ways and learn what the words actually mean.

We are moving to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam and planning to explore the world.

How did this plan come about? Is it something you have been wanting to do for a long time?

It was an idea that came into fruition quite organically. I have found it fascinating how everything has fallen into place so easily. It came from an idea of wanting to ʻliveʼ, to travel, and to open our children’s eyes to the world.

What was involved in the application process?

I sent my C.V to an international school that I had looked into that was not profit driven and had similar teaching philosophies to mine. I was then contacted and asked to do a series of Skype interviews.

In the first interview I was asked “What are your strengths and what do you love to teach? From there they created a role of Performing Arts and Visual Arts. It begins in August. I am very optimistic because of

the buzz of all the teachers that contact me and offer with help and advice. It is clear that these teachers are happy and excited about teaching and learning. It sounds like a positive and encouraging environment.

Tell me about the school in terms of size, students, location etc The school is amazing. There are approximately 1000 students both Vietnamese and expats with a student to teacher ratio of 1-8. It is located in the Nha Be district of Ho Chi Minh City.

What a massive change for the family.

How's everyone feeling about the move?

Yes it is a massive change. Moving from Raglan population of approx. 3000 to Ho Chi Minh 8.4 Million. We are all feeling apprehensive but at the same time we are excited. Life is for living isn’t it?

We also know we will be back one day.

Raglan is our home.

What are you most looking forward to?

Travelling with our children, amazing food, low cost of living, our children being offered opportunities we couldn’t provide here, access to healthcare at a reasonable cost like dentistry etc, widening

I know you will be missed at Waitetuna school. What will you miss?

I will miss the children, their families, and my colleagues.

Waitetuna School is such a special place. The teaching going on there is exceptional. Lara and Ali have taught me so much as a teacher, I feel very privileged.

I watch and listen as they inspire and share with the children a love of learning and a confidence to be the best students of life they can be. I have seen children who have struggled in their learning, grow in their confidence until they are ready to start high school. All of the students seem armed with a strength of character, and a sense of who they are.

I will miss the staff who make it the wonderful environment that it is, particularly one of my favourite people in the world, my darling Lorna.

I am thankful to have had the freedom to teach in the way I want to, and be supported to try new things. It is a collaborative and open minded school. There is magic happening at Waitetuna. You are lucky if you are a part of it.

We interviewed Bobby and Jet. This is what they said: What did it feel like to make the team?

Bobby and Jet: A new challenge, we had to trial for half a year because there were so many people. Around 74 trialed but only 10 people could make the cut.

Was it hard? And why?

Bobby and Jet: Yes, it is hard playing people older than you, and you have to be really fit to keep up.

What team are you in?

Bobby: Flyers Basketball Waikato A, Jet: Waikato B. How much do you train a week?

he Puketti Spaghetti went on in Hamilton 2 weeks ago. One person from Waitetuna school, Riley Hartgill, went to the Puketti Spaghetti. The Puketti Spaghetti is a mountain bike track in Hamilton.

We interviewed Riley and this is what he said.: Was it fun? Yes, it was fun, but also really hard.

What place did you come? First. When I came first I was really excited.

How long was the race? The race was three hours long.

How did it feel? Relieved after I finished.

The best part was when I realised I won.

T Bobby: Three days a week, Jet: Twos day a week How long do you train for?

Bobby: 2 hours a day, 6 hours a week.

Jet: 1 hour 30 minutes a day.

he 7 & 8 students went to a leadership team building day in Hamilton on March 7. The day was led by Sport Waikato.

There were lots of different team building games.

Our favourite game was Tic Tac Toe and the most challenging games were Kaleidoscope and Building Blocks. In Tic Tac Toe there were two teams - each team was given 3 cones. The people at the front of the line would each have a cone. They had to run to a mat with the cone and place it down so that their team could get 3 in a row. They then had to run back to the team before the next person could go. Once 3 cones were placed (if there was not 3 in a row) they would have to rearrange the cones. We enjoyed this day because it taught us lots of team building skills as well as leadership skills that we can use in the future.

After each game our group had to sit down together and answer up to 3 questions about how our group did in that activity.

We improved our skills on how to lead and what makes a true leader.

Notice is hereby given that Waikato District Council, for allowing Hamilton Car Club to hold a motorsport event, proposes to temporarily close a tar-sealed section of Ruapuke Road, Raglan, between Te Mata Rd and Waimaunga Rd, on Sunday 26 May 2019 from 9am to 5pm.

For the period of closure of the road, the following provision will be made for ordinary vehicular traffic which would otherwise use the roads. The road section will be manned at intersections by clearly identifiable marshals equipped with radio communication and access will be provided in the event of an emergency.
