Warrick reckons he’s only seen Maui dolphin about eight times in all his years of fishing – let alone ever having caught one.

The changes have made it harder and harder to earn a living, he says. “A couple of years ago I was going to finish altogether … it felt like I was getting nowhere trying to be a trawler on the west coast.”

aglan commercial skipper Warrick Harris may be pleased to hear that officialdom believes he runs a “great little fishery” but insists he’s simply making a living and doing it sustainably.

The 49 year old’s been fishing out of Raglan for more than two decades now, the sole local survivor in an industry that’s had to cope with increasingly difficult regulations.

And Warrick reckons that, despite all the red tape, he enjoys a good work-life balance.

“I live in the country and work out at sea,” the family man told the Chronicle from his trawler Joanne, tied up at Raglan wharf. “That’s what I like.”

He also likes it that a portion of his catch goes straight from iced bins aboard his boat to the fish shop at the wharf, which he says means customers get the freshest possible product.

It’s a practice that’s no longer a given in this country thanks to stringent controls imposed by the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Warrick traces his involvement in commercial fishing here back to the summer of ‘97-’98. He worked a few years on the Hartstone’s boats, and stayed on when Tainui subsequently took over the longtime local company.

In fact it was during Tainui’s relatively brief involvement with the fishing industry here that he got his skippers ticket.

“I ran the Lady Ruth a while … until it was sold,” Warrick recalls.

With the former Hartstone’s vessels gone to the east coast he then invested in his own boat with support from Raglan Seafoods owner Mark Mathers who depends on Warrick’s catch for his popular fish shop at the wharf.

At first Warrick was set netting for shark – or lemon fish, as it’s called by retailers – for both the local market and for export to Australia.

“MPI doesn’t make it easy,” Warrick admits. “There’s no room to do anything wrong.”

But soon after, the first of New Zealand’s fishing restrictions designed to protect Maui’s and Hector’s dolphins was put in place, with a four nautical mile ban (from the beach) on set netting.

“I’m always trying to improve,” he says of his efforts to fish sustainably.

Warrick has only the one crew member and his take’s a tiny drop in the bucket compared with that of fisheries giants like Sealord and Talleys, but he maintains it’s a case of the smaller the better. He can ensure his fish are landed in a high quality condition which, in turn, means they sell better and have a longer shelf life.

He’s proud of his achievements, making the most of the good fishing Raglan has to offer and even earning praise from the MPI observers on board over the years.

But it’s been tough, and of the three trawlers based at Raglan wharf as recently as last year it’s only the Joanne that remains.

Lightbulb moment instrumental in simpler way to learn to play

I

t may sound a bit Irish but a local muso turned inventor has come up with a device that teaches people with not a scrap of musical knowledge how to play all manner of ballads and pub songs from the Emerald Isle.

In fact Chris Watson’s ‘Tunebot’ holds more than 10,000 traditional Irish tunes, along with rows of LEDs that enable anyone who

can’t read music to quickly get to grips with any of four of the most common instruments in Irish music nowadays – the mandolin, banjo, whistle or flute.

It’s all rather like colour by numbers, admits Chris. The LEDs light up in a programmed sequence to show which strings and frets, or keys and holes, to play.

And since it’s widely accepted that playing by ear with no written music is the best way to learn traditional Irish music, Chris adds, this is a skill that can be readily practised with Tunebot.

“It helps you listen more carefully, memorise rather than regurgitate, quickly identify wrong notes and learn new tunes,” he explains of the product he developed over many painstaking hours last year.

This one-time project manager – who abandoned the corporate world in favour of being a stay-at-home dad and building Tunebots – reveals he had a brainwave after a friend he was teaching to play mandolin struggled on a particular chord.

As soon as she watched and heard Chris play that chord she could easily do it herself, he observed.

He then figured that if a wannabe instrumentalist could simultaneously see and hear the music in front of them, they could play whatever they liked.

Chris had a long-outdated computer science degree to draw on but says he learnt everything he really needed to know by googling and from YouTube.

Bit by bit he taught himself the intricacies of electronics to enable him to design his own circuit board then added an amplifier, a touchscreen and so on. “And I learned how to (computer) code.”

It’s been quite a journey, he says, from the prototyping and testing stage and on to the marketing of his unusual invention. The product was finally launched – and a few sold – two months ago at the Auckland Folk Festival, with some Tunebots also selling locally since then.

Chris is grateful to people in the community who have helped in some way to get Tunebot off the ground – from Mark Duyvesteyn who set him up with 3D printing, microcontrollers and electronics to Sam Nobs who assisted with coding and Leighton Davies who “sorted me out with graphics”.

Nick Leigh helped with product design, he adds, while Chris Meek provided the office space.

Then there are the Irish music fans like Jessie Rushton, Bernadette Gavin, David Loughlin, Dougal Greer and Jennifer Snowden who were among the 70-odd that answered Chris’s call on Raglan Notice Board back in October for “test pilots” to trial the Tunebot.

All have been “patient testers”, he reckons, getting him to an end product he hopes many people like the sound of.

Young rugby talent makes mark at sevens tournament

alented young local Mitchell Swann has recently marked a win with the Hamilton Boys High School sevens team at the 2021 Te Ika a Māui North Island Secondary Schools Sevens Tournament held at Arataki over March 21-22.

Fourteen year old Mitchell was recently accepted in to the highly competitive Junior Elite Sports Programme at Hamilton Boys High School, spearheaded by Department Head Todd Miller (former All Black and Waikato player).

Coaches noticed Mitchell's talent during his trial for the Boys High touch team and was picked to be part of the sevens team that won the tournament over the weekend.

Having come up through the Raglan Junior Rugby Club, Mitchell has in the past represented Waikato and the North Island at both the Gwynne Shield and Roller Mills tournaments. He started at Hamilton Boys High School at the beginning of 2021 after completing Year 9 at Raglan Area School.

With trials for the First XV A team coming up very soon, Mitchell's current goal is to get chosen for this squad.

aglan Bowling Club hosted its largest event in its busy calendar – The Western 1000, where serious sponsorship enables the awarding of serious prize-money to winning teams.

By 9.30 am last Saturday, 26 teams of four players were well into competing for first prize in the event played over four games.

The Winning Team, from Hillcrest, saw off tough competition while our best local team, sponsored by Top Cut Butchery, narrowly missed out on 4 wins.

Introducing Meli Berends: Maternity, Birth, and Milestone Photographer

T

his week we sat down for a Q&A with maternity photographer Meli Brends.

When did you find your passion for photography?

I have been enamoured by photography since high school, but was much older when I realised that I had a deep passion for capturing images of hāpū māmās, birth and children. After being diagnosed with breast cancer at 33, I realised that life is short and what I loved was photography and so embarked on my journey as a professional photographer.

What training did you pursue?

When I was presented with the opportunity to turn my love for photography into a career, I grabbed it with both hands and decided to move my wee family to Palmerston North. At the age of 40, I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Imaging, majoring in photography and in 2016 was awarded the NZ Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) student category winner Why did you decide to focus your photography towards pregnancy and childhood?

I am passionate about documenting birth. It is such an honour being welcomed into the birthing space and being able to capture moments and emotions between expectant parents and their support people.

Birth photography is a beautiful way to keep hold of all those precious moments that

happen so fast during this incredible time and being able to revisit those memories is such a treasure. I enjoy documenting milestone moments for babies and toddlers, featuring ‘birthday cake smashes’. These sessions are wonderfully messy and fun and can often be followed with some 'clean-up' bath time or breastfeeding photography sessions, which make equally lovely keepsakes. What a way for our children to see how loved they are!

Do you have future projects that you are working on?

One additional facet of photography is being able to collaborate with others, creating powerful images that really speak to people. To be involved in a creative project that may bring others to see the world differently, working with a social narrative that causes discussion, creates awareness, and celebrates unity within diversity. Using photography as a tool to share a message, raising awareness and to educate, is extremely close to my heart. I am always keen to collaborate with other artists or activists, jumping on board a project to help bring it to fruition.

Hutchison and Hareb hammer home big wins at Rip Curl Pro presented by Corona

R

aglan’s Taylor Hutchison and Taranaki’s Paige Hareb have both surfed to big wins at the Rip Curl Pro Raglan presented

by Corona today (Sunday 21st March) as they decimated the perfect waves wrapping into Manu Bay. The high scoring finals were optimised by the two winning totals, Hutchison finishing with a 17.6 point heat total and Hareb finishing with a 16.60 point heat total.

The swell was expected to decrease throughout the day but instead, it built from dawn getting to 1.0m – 1.5m for the afternoon heats and finals with glassy conditions throughout the morning giving way to sea breezes in the afternoon.

Hutchison continued his good form throughout the early stages of the event after posting the only perfect ten point ride on day one and then posting excellent scores in all three heats he contested today.

“I am stoked to finally get a win here at home. I had such a good run this weekend and to surf in the final with these guys was awesome” said Hutchison.

“Most heats or finals when your opponents are chasing over a nine

point ride, you think you are pretty safe but not out there today, the waves were so good and these guys in the final all had waves in that range so it was not over until that final hooter” he added.

Hutchison’s precision backhand appeared to have stepped up a notch this weekend where he continually found the biggest waves with the best form and surfed tight and aggressive in the pocket.

Waihi Beach surfer Levi Stewart was the closest of Hutchison’s opponents, however, only one point separated second through fourth.

Stewart had an excellent run through to the finals and finished with a 15.97 point heat total in the final to outpoint Alex Dive (Mnt) in third and the youngest of the finalists, Tom Robinson (Whngrei) in fourth.Earlier in the day Hutchison and Robinson defeated Conor McLennan (Chch) and Chris Malone in the first semifinal while Dive and Stewart defeated Ricardo Christie (Gis) and Sean Peggs (Tairua) in the second.

stages of the final to find the best waves.“We had such great waves all weekend so the level of surfing was so good from everyone” said Hareb.

“It is good to get the win out there, I feel like I am on a roll after making the finals at the National Championships as well and now winning the Rip Curl Pro, even though it was still hard to secure eight and nine point rides from the judges” she added.

Hareb’s superior speed and vertical turns and powerful wraps down the corner of Manu Bay kept her opponents at arms length. Hareb makes it two wins from two at Raglan after her most recent win at Manu Bay in November last year The Rip Curl pro pres by Corona is the final event before the New Zealand Surfing Team is named early next week with the team set to attend the ISA World Surfing Games being held in El Salvador from May 29 – June 6. The Rip Curl Pro is the second event of the New Zealand Surf Series which heads south to Dunedin and Christchurch in the next month before events at Taranaki and Piha to conclude the season in May. Meet your Trainers: Irene Goed has been performing and teaching various circus skills for over 25 years. Her passion lies with aerial arts (silks, trapeze,…) and object manipulation like juggling and hula hoops. Since finishing a diploma in Circus Arts at Christchurch Polytech she has been performing at festivals, corporate and community events throughout NZ. Irene and husband Damian are proud owners of Circus Aotearoa which has been touring the country for the last 13 years. She is also teaching circus skills and yoga based movement to local children and adults in Waitetuna.

Stephanie Kennedy is the owner and operator of SpiritRides Riding and Vaulting School which is in its' 10th year of successfully teaching Adults and Children. She vaulted as a child in Germany and has

had exceptionally talented and successful Overseas Vaulting Coaches training with her over the last four years. She is a qualified Kids Family Yoga Instructor and is currently studying to become a Personal Trainer. Stephanie is extremely passionate in teaching Vaulting and all it has to offer.

The Facility: McKenna Bros Stables is an incredible facility in the Waikato, easily accessible and central.
