In an address to the nation on Monday, March 23, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that these extraordinary measures would give the nation the best chance of avoiding thousands of deaths from Covid-19. This lockdown is the largest collective action this country has undertaken and is a necessary step to save thousands of New Zealand lives and to stop the spread of this highly contagious virus.

Schools, restaurants and all but essential services will be closed as of 11:59pm, Wednesday, March 25.

For the next four weeks – and likely more if the virus is not contained – we can expect to be tested.

Things could get worse before they get better, our Prime Minister said.

For the majority of us, close contact will only be with those in our own households and for the most part, we can take solace in the fact that loved ones are only a phone call or a video chat away. We can also take

Raglan businesses move quickly in response to NZ-wide lockdown R

aglan businesses acted quickly on Monday, organising delivery services for everything from groceries to pharmaceuticals as the country’s coronavirus crisis moved to Alert Level 3 ahead of going on to Level 4 from 11.59pm Wednesday.

The town’s two supermarkets, SuperValue and Four Square – which as essential services can stay open throughout the four-week nationwide lockdown – were offering home deliveries with payment either by portable eftpos or online.

The moves help avoid any contact with others for the four weeks the town goes into lockdown.

Both stores had earlier put in place a system of free deliveries for seniors, the vulnerable and those self-isolating, with SuperValue also prepared to add extra deliveries every second Tuesday so SuperGold cardholders could still take advantage of its regular five percent discount.

SuperValue was also limiting “essential items” – flour, longlife milks, baked beans and spaghetti, rice and pasta, baby formula, toilet paper, panadol and paracetamol – to two per person.

To help a small Raglan business keep afloat Four Square owner/operator Satnam Bains was offering on Monday to use Raglan Shuttle, which very recently came under new management, for its deliveries.

He said customers could pay the shuttle service direct, part pay what they could afford or pay nothing – leaving Four Square to cover any unmet costs. “We are all working together to keep our community safe.”

The Herbal Dispensary will also be open Thursday (today). with a strict one in one out policy. They will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday but will reopen again on Monday from 10am - 1pm.

Similarly, Whaingaroa Organic Kai will also be providing services as an essential food provider.

The smaller Wainui Foodmarket said it would remain open for as long as supplies could be accessed, though whether it can continue trading during the lockdown was unclear.

The local pharmacy – in what it called the best interests of staff and the Raglan community – was on Monday admitting only one customer at a time to its side counter inside the main doors, and others were waiting on the footpath on painted stars that ensured they were sufficiently apart.

The pharmacy was advising locals to expect delays but was reassuring them they would still get their prescriptions filled and could buy other items.

Customers were also being encouraged to phone or email the pharmacy – an essential service during the lockdown – beforehand so all requested items could be ready for pickup.

Raglan Medical – in line with primary care medical clinics throughout the country – had moved early this week to phone consults only, and was sending prescriptions directly through to Raglan Pharmacy.

Local fuel stations, which are also classified as essential services, are expected to remain open throughout the lockdown.

Meanwhile local roots reggae band Lost Tribe Aotearoa didn’t let the cancellation of their local gig last Saturday night stop them. With sponsors Raglan Roast behind them, they livestreamed old songs and new from their upcoming album to a “massive response” – proving, they said, that “NZ music can live on through this crisis”.

Edith Symes *Raglan Area School was closed from Tuesday this week, saying it was “implementing with urgency our plan to support your child’s learning from home”.

It said school holidays were starting early from next Monday – March 30 – and the school would be technically open for distance instruction after the break, though teachers would be working off site **Raglan Surf Lifesaving Club said they would still be patrolling Ngarunui Beach from 11am - 5pm Saturday and 11am-4pm Sunday, however wthey won’t be doing any other activities outside of this due to the current Covid-19 conditions.

ecently, the Raglan Old ceremony with a karanga by School Arts Centre clay shed Raglan councilor Lisa Thomson, was officially opened in a dawn blessing by kaumatua Russell

About 50 people gathered to celebrate the opening of the first part of the Creative Space building, which includes the new clay shed, the kiln room and the Raglan Lions sorting room.

Raglan Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher says the decision to build a new building was made seven years ago at a community meeting held at the Old School.

“Since then the journey has been long and hard. The opening of the clay shed is an amazing milestone. We have only got to this point due to the contribution of many individuals, businesses, organisations and funders. Many have donated money, time and services.”

Progress on the building continues as fundraising efforts allow and remaining work includes plastering, painting, light installation, fitting fire door in the lobby, hand rails for stairs, paving, sealing carpark, completing lift shaft and lift installation, and more.

“The journey continues with the next step being the plastering of the lobby and stairs. We still need more money so the fundraising also continues,” he says.

fundraiser and already money from brick sales has been essential paying for windows, doors, joinery and the council fees needed to get the Clay Shed open for public use.

“Buying a personalised brick is such a wonderful way to help give life to a community project. Each brick sold gets the building a little bit closer to completion. So, don’t miss out on leaving a permanent mark at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre and being a part of history,” she says.

Staying mentally healthy ​ our emotional and mental wellbeing is important. It is normal Y to feel stressed or lonely when self-isolating, but there are some things you can do to feel better.

Even if you are not sick you may be feeling anxious about COVID-19. This is normal.

Managing your mental wellbeing Reach out to your usual supports – family and whānau, friends and workmates. Sharing how we feel and offering support to others is important.

The only change to our opening hours is a temporary reduction in the closing time on Tuesday and Thursday. Our new hours are 8am to 5pm.

To keep our community safe we are limiting the number of people in the building. Our clinic has comprehensive hygiene measures to reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases.

Essential services will continue, patients who are unwell and require a face to face consult will be brought into the clinic.

Magnolia Tree Childcare's Tour de Raglan fundraising event

M

agnolia Tree Childcare wanted to help two members of our local volunteer fire service, Dirk and Mick, who are taking part in the Tour Aotearoa by cycling 3000 km from Cape Reinga to Bluff to raise funds for Raglan Volunteer fire service.

Jackie Gillet came up with the idea of our very own Tour de Raglan where the children from our centre plus their whānau would be able to actively take part by being sponsored, all to raise some much needed funds for the fire fighters to purchase new head lamps for working in the dark.

Our hard working staff made posters, banners and flyers to tell our centre families about supporting the Tour de Raglan.

On Tuesday afternoon, March 17, we all met at the netball courts to get going. There were bikes, scooters , skateboards, and roller skates. We had young and old all taking part for a great cause. Jackie counted 1297 circuits of the netball courts as well as more circuits on the grass of the rugby fields.

At least 50 people cycled for 1 hour or 1297 laps which came to a total of 3000 minutes.

All the participants were rewarded with a sausage and an iceblock.

We raised a grand total of $850.

Dirk came along too, although not on his bike, as he had just returned to Raglan from completing the length of the North Island.

Waikato Community Funders Group collaborate on COVID-19 response

C

ommunity funders in the Waikato region have combined efforts to directly support non-profit organisations who are wellplaced to support the wellbeing of the most at-risk people, who may be affected by COVID-19.

“Trust Waikato has allocated $1 million towards funding a COVID-19 response, and other funders will be contributing further through combined action and grants,” says Dennis Turton, Chief Executive of Trust Waikato.

“This is a hugely important way to support the work of non-profit organisations who will be working at the coal-face to protect and look after our most vulnerable communities.”

Target groups identified for funding include rural support organisations, community houses, those who work with the elderly and at-risk groups and mental health support networks.

“I am really pleased that we are taking a coordinated response to the

COVID-19 crisis and the disruption this situation has created,” says Raewyn Jones, Chief Executive of WEL Energy Trust.

“We all have a part to play, and these collective efforts will make it much easier for the communities we support, to know what help is available, and where”.

The Waikato Community Funders Group will be contacting organisations who are active in the region to let them know that this funding is available and how to apply.

The Waikato Community Funders Group takes a collaborative approach to funding opportunities across the Waikato and includes the Brian Perry Foundation, Braemar Charitable Trust, The Department of Internal Affairs, DV Bryant Trust, Gallagher Foundation, Len Reynolds Trust, Momentum Waikato, Trust Waikato, WEL Energy Trust, Hamilton City Council and Waikato Regional Council.

Coastguard appeals for people not to go out on the water

oastguard New Zealand is asking people not to go out on the water today or during the lockdown period to avoid putting themselves or Coastguard volunteers in harm’s way.

“Last year Coastguard volunteers responded to more than 3,700 calls for help, proving that regardless of planning and preparation, people can’t always rely on their own steam to get home,” says Coastguard New Zealand CEO, Callum Gillespie.

“As individuals we need to recognise that our actions can have an effect on others,” he adds.

“We have had a lot of calls and messages from the public asking if they’re able to go out on the water during the lockdown period, the answer is no. Should you get into difficulty, you will quickly want help from Coastguard volunteers and staff, requiring them to leave self-isolation and come together to help you.”

“Please don’t put yourself or others at risk, stay off the water and out of harm’s way as we unite against Covid-19.”

A Prayer For All People

Fear Dear Heavenly Father, you hold all things in your hand yet many of us feel downright afraid bordering on feelings of dread and even despair as we face our new COVID-19 normal.

In the Gospel of John 14:1 at a time when His disciples were very afraid, Jesus said, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me”.

Kia ora Raglan. With the announcement that NZ will move from Level 3 to a Level 4 in response to COVID-19, our country is moving swiftly into lock down of all nonessential business and movement.

We wanted to let you know what will continue and what will close at Xtreme Zero Waste for this time.

Consultation on draft Raglan (Whaingaroa) Coastal Reserve Management Plan Due to the current COVID-19 situation, Waikato District Council will be postponing consultation on the draft Raglan (Whaingaroa) Coastal Reserve Management Plan, which was due to start on 25 March 2020.

Consultation on the RMP will occur later in the year, and all submissions and feedback will be welcomed at that time.
