allis Street links the town with its wharf and with its past.

Newly-wed 26 year old Wesleyan missionary James Wallis came to Whaingaroa from London April 1835, with his wife, Mary. The practical pair were welcomed by the people of Te Horea Kainga (on the north side of the harbour).

A church and a whare for the couple were soon constructed. Maori preacher, John Leigh, assisted Wallis with translation until he could speak the language. Daily classes (in English, maths, and scripture) and two Sunday services led to peak attendances of up to 500 people.

The Wesleyans withdrew the Wallis family after 18 months, much to the grief of everyone; however, within three years the family returned and built a new church and mission station at Nihinihi, (on today’s Opotoru Road). Wallis served as a missionary here from 18391863.

eople in Raglan are invited to hop on board Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s iconic pink caravan, ‘Pinkie’, next week, where specialist breast nurses will be available to chat about breast health.

Pinkie will be outside SuperValue Raglan between 9am-2:30pm on Tuesday 29 March.

“Every year Pinkie goes on an education tour around New Zealand with our specialist breast nurses, and we’re thrilled to be visiting Raglan in March. It’s a great chance to talk about mammograms, get advice about checking your breasts, and learn how you can reduce your breast cancer risk,” said Ah-Leen Rayner, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s chief executive.

“One of Pinkie’s star attractions is Bessie, a life-like torso which shows the visible signs of breast cancer. Many women are often surprised to learn what a lump actually feels like, so we urge

everyone to come along and find out for themselves!”

Around 300 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Waikato DHB area every year, and around 60 will die from it.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for New Zealand women but research shows the earlier it is detected, the better the outcome. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ encourages women to be breast aware from the age of 20 and to consider starting mammograms at 40.

“Our breast nurses are trained professionals who can give expert advice about symptoms, treatments, support groups and post-surgery options. Anyone who can’t visit Pinkie in person is welcome to call our free nurse advice line on 0800 BC NURSE (0800 226 8773),” Ah-Leen added.

In 2020 Pinkie was adapted to be Covid-safe, meeting social distancing and hygiene requirements, with face masks and disposable gloves available to visitors.

he New Zealand flag flies at half-mast at Clint Baddeley’s home in Raglan; the man who was a get-things-done kind of guy died peacefully on 10 March 2022 after a hard-fought battle with prostate cancer.

A stalwart of the Raglan community, Clint represented the Raglan Ward on the Waikato District Council, served as deputy mayor, and was DJ at the Raglan Community Radio. He co-founded Raglan junior soccer, helped with major fundraising for Raglan Kindergarten and spent five years as a voluntary Raglan ambulance driver.

Such was his impact in the Waikato he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to local government and the community.

The MNZM citation covered a wide range of roles in which Clint had served over five decades.

Those roles ranged from his work as convener of the Council of Trade Unions for 10 years to stints as a Wintec board member, chair of the Waikato Community Trust, Raglan district councillor for 12 years and deputy mayor for three.

During his time as a district councillor, Clint was known for shaking things up and he wasn’t afraid of making his opinions

known on the radio – especially when the local body elections were looming.

Clint was proud of what he achieved on council, with his personal highlights including the new Raglan Museum and Information Centre, the Papahua playground upgrades and helping Xtreme Zero Waste become the council’s preferred contractors.

He was a man who committed long periods of time to the many roles he undertook.

Awarded a Wintec honorary fellowship in 2015, Clint served 18 years on the Wintec Council, with the $25m Wintec Engineering and Trades facility at Rotokauri Campus among his many achievements.

He was also pivotal in the development of Wintec House, the Rotokauri and City campus student hubs, the Wintec multistorey carpark building and Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa marae.

Clint had a huge passion for music and Raglan got to benefit from this with his long-running Raglan Community Radio show which saw him share the tunes he loved for over 20 years.

A teenager in the 1960s, Clint was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Animals, Small Faces and Amen Corner.

But his self-titled show was far from being a golden oldies’ session; he loved the sounds of Americana and relished serving up new and unreleased sounds.

Even though he was set up to do the show from home, Clint was at the mic in the town hall studio for his last show on January 16.

A life member of Raglan Community Radio, he also served on the committee several times and ever the practical man, Clint also built the microphone stands and CD shelving unit that are still in use in the studio.

The oldest son of John and Ethel Baddeley Clint was born in Hamilton and grew up in Fairfield.

Clint met the love of his life Jackie when they were at Fairfield College and they married at the Anglican Church in Bow Street, Raglan in 1969. It wasn’t long before they moved to be closer to Jackie’s parents, who had retired in Raglan.

Clint was initially interested in a creative career and started his working life as a window dresser at Farmers in Hamilton.

He went on to become a fitter and welder and worked at the Golden Bay Cement Company at the Raglan wharf before moving to a job at Horotiu freezing works.

His commitment to workers’ rights started as a shop steward at Horotiu and he went on to work as a full time organiser with the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (now E Tu).

When he retired from the union, his farewell was attended in equal parts by union members and employers – he was well respected by both sides for his pragmatism and his negotiating skills.

Clint served as chair of Waikato’s largest philanthropic trust, Trust Waikato, as a board member for Community Waikato, on the WorldSkills New Zealand board and has undertaken many volunteer roles in Whaingaroa He was a man who always had three jobs on the go.

Daughter Sarah says her father was kind, hardworking and committed to making long lasting change. “Dad loved Raglan, and in the last years of his life Raglan really loved him back.”

Son Jamie and Sarah say the standard of care and support Clint received from medical professionals, friends and neighbours was higher in Raglan than he would have received in Wellington or Auckland – something they are particularly grateful for.

John Clinton Baddeley will be deeply missed by his wife Jackie, he was a loved father and father-in-law of Jamie and Nikki and Sarah and Graham, and proud poppy of Jacob, Leon, Louis and Tilda, and loved brother of Barbara.

Kerbside food waste collection– it’s a yes

aikato District Council’s food waste consultation once again looks likely to draw a majority of ‘Nos’ from those in the community who don’t want to pay for a service to divert food waste from landfill.

Consultation for a targeted rate for the food waste collection closes on April 1.

The online and paper version of the survey asks only one question and it’s one that will have many weighing up the benefits of the service against the annual cost of $72.90 or $1.40 a week.

Already, the keyboard warriors are hitting the Raglan Notice Board with posts about the awesome home composting they do and not wanting to contribute towards others use of the kerbside compost collection Xtreme Zero Waste first piloted five years ago.

Nobody wants to pay more for their rates, including me, but for many home composting isn’t a viable option – for a variety of reasons – and not because they are lazy as some allude to.

Just like my rates pay for the library I don’t use, the Manu Bay shower and have never rinsed the sea water off there, the playgrounds and don’t play on them, the water at the boat ramp I don’t use, and the

many other council facilities I probably don’t benefit from; I’m also happy to pay for the convenience of kerbside compost collection.

I love that our local children can play on some amazing playgrounds and our local library has a great collection of books, and fishos get to wash their boats after a day’s fishing, and surfers can take a shower at Manu Bay after hitting the left-hand break.

These things come at a cost, they might feel free but ratepayers are paying for them and how cool is it that we have these services available to us and to the many visitors who come to Raglan.

Council doesn’t get it right all the time.

They certainly did a rubbish job of the first food waste collection consultation which has led us here again paying to have our say through a consultation process that the council can ignore anyway.

And remember it’s a consultation not a democratic vote for the general public; the councillors weigh up the feedback and then they vote on whether to keep it or not; a majority of ‘Nos’ doesn’t mean we will lose the service.

I, for one, am hoping the councillors will see the bigger picture and, election year or not, realise that this service is too important not to keep.

Most likely they will have to reintroduce the service anyway; the Government is already seeking public feedback for the ‘Transforming Recycling’ proposal that looks to standardise kerbside recycling across the country, including food waste.

Green MP Eugenie Sage welcomed the proposals saying, "These are exciting initiatives. We are changing the way we view waste. That benefits nature with less litter, more materials being re-used, and less climate pollution from landfill.”

If you believe climate change is a thing (I certainly believe the science), why wouldn’t we want to reduce the impact that our excesses are having on the planet.

Since the food waste collection came in my need to put out landfill bags has reduced massively, sometimes down to one blue bag every three weeks.

It might seem such a minor environmental impact for good but it feels great to know that I’ve played a small part in reducing waste.

I love that Xtreme Zero Waste is pushing the boundaries when it comes to waste minimisation and I hope, regardless of how many ‘Nos’ come back from the consultation, that our council is brave enough to say yes.

Opinion: Supporting Kiwis with the cost of living WITH ANGELA ROBERTS

S

ince coming into Government, Labour has worked hard to support low and middle income Kiwis. Last week, we took another step to make things a bit easier, in light of the additional pressure families are feeling because of the Ukraine invasion and the resulting global energy crisis. I know this price spike has been tough for many here in Taranaki-King Country, especially those on lower incomes.

While we can’t control global events, we can control the support we provide New Zealanders. That’s why we’ve taken

action. It will be great to be able to provide half-price public transport fares for three months, giving some of our whānau a great alternative to filling up the tank.

Unfortunately, public transport is yet to be made a viable option for some Kiwis, especially those in small provincial centres.

So we’re reducing road user charges and have cut petrol excise duty by 25 cents a litre for three months, to make filling up a 40 litre tank more than $11 cheaper.

This approach is a great example of how this government is working to support Kiwi families in the short term and, at the same time, taking another step towards a just transition and a zero carbon future.

Chocolate is delicious to both humans and dogs, however very toxic to dogs!

Billy keeps momentum going at Vissla

illy Stairmand finished runner up at Vissla and Sisstrevolution Central Coast Pro presented by Mad Mex World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 event. After a huge week at Avoca Beach, The Pines delivered picturesque conditions for Finals Day with clean two-to-three foot waves to complete the event in style.

The Men’s final brought together two absolute powerhouses from the event in Stanwell Park surfer Kalani Ball and New Zealand’s veteran Qualifying Series surfer Billy Stairmand. Both surfers forged different paths to the finals and were certainly made to work for a finals berth by Jagger Bartholemew (Gold Coast) and Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head) who ripped their way into the Semifinals.

Ball was able to get the nod in his Semifinal matchup in a very high scoring affair, whilst Stairmand had to wait till the dying moments in a close heat to get a score that shot him into first place right on the buzzer.

The final was tight from the outset with Ball and Stairmand trading blows early in a close encounter.

part of the heat that was able to put the pressure on the New Zealand surfer. The Stanwell Park powerhouse was able to show off his elite and deep repertoire of manoeuvres; in the dying stages he threw to the air with a huge reverse to put the result out of reach for Stairmand as time elapsed.

Ball now secures his first QS 3000 event win in his third event of the NSW Pro Surf Series and keeps his momentum swinging in the right direction after a Semifinal finish at Port Stephens in the Gage Roads Port Stephens Pro. “It’s such an amazing feeling to get the win against such a great competitor like Billy,” Ball said. “The heat felt like it was going forever and I was constantly looking down at my watch feeling a bit nervous, but when time ran out I was in front and I’m absolutely stoked. I’ve had so many second and third place results so it’s just amazing to finally crack that win and continue to execute the game plan that worked for me all event”.

Finishing in second was Kiwi sensation Billy Stairmand who was gallant in defeat and did his country proud in an event where he certainly delivered plenty of entertainment.

Chocolate contains two substances called methylxanthines, namely Caffeine and Theobromine, both of which are poisonous to dogs. Yes, caffeine is toxic to dogs, so keep the pups away from your home-made mochaccino!

Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine. Dark chocolate is the most toxic type to dogs as it contains the highest amount of Theobromine. Therefore, the higher percentage of cocoa the more toxic. White chocolate doesn’t contain any theobromine, however, don’t feed it to your dog, as it is high in fat and could cause fatal illnesses like pancreatitis.

The possible effects of chocolate poisoning in dogs include: • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Hyperactivity – twitching, restlessness • Tremors • Seizures • Increased heart rate • Abnormal heart rhythm • Death Clinical signs can take 6-12 hours to develop in dogs, and it takes about 4 days until the chocolate is out of the dog’s system.

If you know or suspect your dog has eaten some chocolate, give the local Anexa Vet Clinic a call immediately, as time is of the essence. Chocolate ingested within the last 2-6 hours, vomiting will be induced, removing most of the toxin from your dog’s stomach before it can be properly digested and cause a problem.

If your dog is already showing signs of chocolate poisoning, call the vet clinic immediately, as this may be an emergency.

Treatment of your dog at the clinic will involve supportive care until the toxin is out of your dog’s system (there is no antidote for chocolate poisoning), and may include intravenous fluids, gastric lavage, medications to treat seizures, anaesthesia, and medications to support the heart.

Prevention is better than treatment, so make sure you keep all chocolate out of reach from your dog. If you are doing an Easter egg hunt for the kids, it would be best to lock your dog away until the games are over. While enjoying your chocolate treats consider putting your dog away in its crate, in another room, or outside; eliminate the possibility of sneaking any chocolate left on the table or dropped accidently onto the floor.

Always remember – chocolate is delicious, but potentially deadly to your dog.

Making the most of unavoidable food scraps is just one of the wins from our kerbside collection that's been running for the past five years. Folks in our community have been able to keep their food scraps out of their rubbish, saving space and saving emissions coming out of landfill, saving citrus or meat scraps from funking up their home composts and saving $$ via buying less rubbish bags, it's been a win win for all and it's so important for this service to continue.
