Miles Ratima, owner of local café Indi, is putting the environment before profits.

A

New Year’s resolution to ditch the single-use takeaway cups is putting Indi’s on the track to being a zero waste café.

And owner Miles Ratima was prepared to take a loss in profits for what he sees is an environmental necessity.

“I started to see more cups in the gutters, falling out of rubbish bins and I realised I was the problem. I don’t want to give people the waste,” he says.

The decision to get rid of the takeaway cups cost the business a lot of customers, but he says many have come back with their own cups and he’s made new customers who support his zero waste stance.

“We’re a hole in the wall takeaway café we lost about 50 percent of our customers.”

Let’s Reclaim Raglan Since 1948 I have been holidaying in Raglan every year.

It is with some realisation that a place I see as my second home is steam rolling into the 21st century. With at times the same awkward growing pains of a teenager - not fully mature - but with plenty of attitude.

Over the past year I have watched with anticipation the work, or lack of it, to reinstate the footpath at the wharf on Wallis Street.

Every business owner should be taking care of their own rubbish and not give customers the chance to create waste in the first place.”

The café is now making its own hemp and coconut milk to offer alternatives to dairy as well as reducing the amount of tetra pak waste.

“All the decisions we have made are more expensive but you can’t put a price on the environment.”

Miles says once the first decision was made to make a reduction in their waste the rest just followed.

“You get a momentum going with the first step and then you’re looking for the next step. I hope other cafes jump on board.”

One must wonder if the delays are caused by the Waikato District Council being captured by big picture ideas to adjust the parking issues which are now constant in Raglan.

Are plans afoot to reclaim the land on the harbour side of the proposed footpath and turn it into boat parking spaces?

Time still seems at sit still in Raglan even as it boats towards the 21st century or does it?

Dear Editor On Tuesday a couple of weeks ago, Stephen suffered a heart attack at the Raglan Gym. The immediate and confident response of the people around him saved his life.

We can never sufficiently express how much the actions of these individuals have affected us and how grateful we are.

Our precious husband / Dad / Grandad is still here because of their selfless, incredible intervention.

We are blessed to be part of such a wonderful community.

The first step to zero waste, however, started with Dreamview Creamery milk deliveries; the local farm gate raw milk business started selling pasteurised milk which meant it could be purchased by the local cafes and businesses.

“We removed so much of our recycling.

I felt like I was drowning in plastic bottles, I was head high in plastic.”

This move also meant more of an expense but Miles wasn’t about to compromise for the almighty dollar.

“For me I feel better about our business.

It was never about making money it was about lifestyle.”

And with that lifestyle comes the responsibility for maintaining the environment, Miles reckons.

“If you’re in hospitality in Raglan you should be educating people about waste.

Celebrating 25 years of Raglan Community Radio

Clint introducing new sounds to Raglan music lovers for nearly 20 years

R

aglan Community Radio’s longest running musical presenter Clint Baddeley has been on the airwaves for nearly 20 years and says it’s the music that keeps him going.

“I love it when I’m sitting at Raglan Roast having a coffee and someone will walk past and come back again and say ‘I loved your show’.”

And it’s this love of music that keeps him going year in year out despite what life may throw at him.

“I love the music and the radio. I enjoy it and I know there are people out there listening and enjoying the show.”

A teenager in the 1960s, Clint was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Animals, Small Faces and Amen Corner; it was a time in music, he says, like no other.

His show is far from being a golden oldies type of show, Clint gets a real kick out of introducing music lovers to new and unreleased sounds.

“The music I play people aren’t going to hear on commercial radio,” he says.

Americana is what he loves to listen to now, but don’t classify it as country music he says, the sounds of Americana are merged from folk, country, blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, bluegrass and gospel; an altogether different sound.

Raglan Community Radio celebrates 25 years in November this year and Clint remembers the days when he lugged a suitcase full of his own CDs to the studio.

His home is still bursting at the seams with CDs and books, Clint and wife Jackie’s great passions.

These days Clint has embraced modern technology and gone from carting CDs to compiling his shows on an iPod and now using an iPad; it makes radio life far less cumbersome, he says.

He still buys all his own music and is a huge fan of the music magazine Uncut which comes every month with a free CD, music reviews section and showcases the best new releases and reissues.

Gone are the days of purchasing CD for that one track that you love; Clint says

online music stores like iTunes allow him to source and purchase that one particular track he wants for his show and to add to his own personal collection.

Clint, alongside Lyn Wilkins from Bizworx, helped the radio establish a structure that involved paying royalties, applying for funding and hiring a paid station manager.

“When wanted to make sure it was run properly.”

The former Waikato District Councillor from 2004-2016, is known for shaking things up and he’s not afraid to make his opinions known on the radio – especially with the local body elections looming.

As a councillor he was used to being confronted about his work on council and doesn’t shy away from good honest debate.

He’s proud of the work he achieved on council for Raglan and counts the new Raglan Museum and information centre, the Papahua playground upgrades and helping Xtreme Zero Waste become the council’s preferred contractors as personal highs.

“When I was on council, I always had Raglan in mind,” he says.

A fitter and welder by trade, Clint worked in the gas and freezing industries in Hamilton and in the cement industry in Raglan before embarking on a long career as industrial relations advocate for the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union.

He spent 18 years on the Wintec Council and was awarded an honorary fellowship in 2016 for his contribution to the New Zealand manufacturing industry, to Wintec and to local community organisations.

And he was chair of Waikato's largest philanthropic trust, Trust Waikato, Community Waikato board member, has undertaken many volunteer roles in Whaingaroa and was appointed to the WorldSkills New Zealand board.

“I always had three jobs on the go.”

Although things have quietened down for Clint of late, he’s not about to give up on his music gig at the radio.

“Eddy Cross – Captain Pugwash reckons he’ll make 20 years but he won’t catch up to me,” he laughs.

elling the neighbours down the road at Dreamview Creamery her funny stories about shifting from an urban to a rural life has led former Raglan librarian Merren Tait to pen her first novel ‘The Year of the Fox’, which will be launched in a fortnight.

It was actually 18 months of very hard work writing the story to get it to a point where she felt happy with it. “I wanted readers to enjoy it and not be pulled out of the narrative by (my) clumsiness.”

The draft was sent to a manuscript assessor – a sort of developmental editor, she says – who made various suggestions. It was a “brutal” process and Merren ended up doing three re-writes before selfpublishing.

Now this 41-year-old fledgling novelist is excited to finally have on hand a small print run of 150 copies for the local market. While essentially about female empowerment, her novel is not autobiographical, she insists. “Though definitely a few stories have come off this property.”

‘The Year of the Fox’ is a light-hearted look at the good life, says Merren, and includes some of those funny stories about the rural lifestyle that first got her writing.

She has progressed during that time from rented bus to new build – in fact two new builds, as her small home on the one-hectare property has been duplicated for her mother who’s moved down from Auckland.

And the book’s had good feedback, she says, from men as well as women.

Some copies have already been sold at Raglan Creative Market where they will continue to be available. And Zinnia downtown in Raglan will stock it after the upcoming launch.

The self-described “fulltime milkmaid, part-time writer” is relishing a change of lifestyle that sees her bottling fresh milk and delivering it around town – in a Friesian cow-coloured van – while busily plotting a few follow-up literary (mis)adventures.

Her first book about Nancy Myers, a go-it-alone protagonist on a journey of self-reliance, is the beginning of a series of stand-alone novels about the good life, Merren told the Chronicle. “I’ve already started writing book two – and have book three in my head.”

Merren’s abrupt about-turn came roughly three years ago when she traded the comforts of suburban living in Lorenzen Bay for a plot of land off the gravelly end of Te Hutewai Road where the view of Mt Karioi dominates, her chickens roam free and a few sheep graze.

She rented an old bus and lived on the land for a year before the writing bug really took hold. “It was pretty basic living … no running water, no electricity for many months.”

She’d go shower and do her washing one minute away on the Dreamview dairy farm in exchange for cooked meals, and built up quite a rapport with the family. “They encouraged me to write my stories down, so I started recording them and realised I had the basis for a book.

“I wrote the first draft feverishly in about three months,” she laughs. “But the first draft is always

Raglan Naturally News Great news! Raglan Naturally informed the community board that they are now part of the Department of Internal Affairs Community-led Development Programme. This means that Raglan Naturally will be working alongside the DIA for the next five years, with support to meet our community aspirations, based on our community plan.

ACT NOW to save Māui Dolphin!

The Whāingaroa catchment flows into the west coast waters which are home to the Popoto or Māui Dolphin, the smallest and rarest dolphin in the world. It is estimated that only 63 individuals now remain from a population that in 1970 numbered over 1800! Māui dolphins are classified as nationally critical and face a real threat of extinction. Their southern ‘cousins’ the Hector’s dolphins are also in some trouble, numbering ~15,000 and classified as nationally vulnerable.

The Ministry for Primary Industries and Department of Conservation are currently leading a review of the Māui & Hector’s Threat Management Plan (TMP). This plan guides future research and management of human related threats impacting our dolphin populations. The review process is a chance to ‘‘have your say” - to speak up for Māui dolphins and ask for serious protection measures to ensure they have the best chance for long-term survival. To learn more about proposed management options, you can pick up a copy of the TMP consultation document from WEC or find it online, by googling ‘MPI dolphin TMP’.

Maui dolphin are an indicator species, their population status and health reflects the overall condition of their ecosystem and of other species living there. WEC is concerned that the current proposals in the TMP don’t have enough focus on the long term protection and maintenance of a healthy marine ecosystem that will ensure a future where Māui dolphins are thriving. Measures such as a ban on net fishing, oil exploration, drilling and seabed mining out to 100m depth contour (within the dolphin habitat) would provide the high level of protection necessary for Māui dolphins to survive now and into the future as the marine habitat comes under more pressure. We know Raglan cares about Māui dolphins and our oceans ....our futures also depend on a healthy environment - both on land and at sea. The best way you can stand up for our native taonga is to write a submission calling for the strongest protections.

We want to encourage and support you, the Raglan community to make submissions that count.

To make sure your voice is heard, we recommend emailing your submission directly to dolphintmp@doc.govt.nz. Submissions close 4th August. We have a template available to help with your email submission on the WEC website or can work with you one on one in the WEC centre on Thursday afternoons.

If you really don’t have time to send a submission, please take two minutes to add your name to the Greenpeace petition which is calling for the strongest protections possible for Māui dolphins.

Keeping Raglan’s Foodwaste Collection- let’s do this!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated to our Givealittle fundraiser. 4 weeks into our campaign and we have raised almost $10K, mainly from the generosity of our locals, but also from some people from out of town. There have been some great conversations in our community media about the foodwaste collections and composting system and all the lengthy research, collaboration and investment from many organisations that have made it possible. This work is even more important than it was 7 years ago when we started scoping out our foodwaste collection. Internationally ‘climate change’ is now being called a ‘climate crisis’ as evidence of rapid change is becoming obvious. Our young people are challenging us to make big changes immediately and diverting foodwaste from landfill is one of the most effective ways we can minimise the potent climate change gas called methane. Cities and countries around the world are setting legislation and placing high levies and bans on organic waste to keep it out of landfill.

Our Foodwaste Diversion Has Been Fantastic There’s been many gains from foodwaste diversion in Raglan. In two years of collections the Raglan community has diverted at least 350 tonnes away from landfill and into compost. Less landfill bags are put out less frequently at houses using the green bins. Many other councils and communities have sought advice from XZW about setting up collections in other places and we need to keep going for another year until our District Council completes their service review and we get another chance to figure out a way forward.
