eople of Raglan, Te Mata and nearby areas – have you considered taking the Raglan Health Shuttle to medical appointments? Can you drive your vehicle to Hamilton and back for $20? Can you get right to the door for your appointment? We all know what parking is like at Waikato Hospital. The shuttle is an excellent service run by volunteer drivers. It is managed by the Raglan District Community Vehicle Trust and operated in conjunction with Raglan Community House.

How do you book? It is easy. Phone Raglan Community House on 07 825 814 in advance of your appointment. A donation of $20 is appreciated and helps cover the cost of running the service. The shuttle can pick you up from your home, or you can meet it at the Raglan Club car park. I have used the service twice – once for a hospital appointment and once for an eye examination at Hamilton Eye Clinic. I arrived on time for both appointments. Don’t become complacent and let this valuable service slip away. Use it or lose it.

Bearded old-timers prove quite the local double act by Edith Symes

R

aglan instrumentalist Redgie Valente reckons his beard’s longer than that of fellow muso Dave Maybee. Not that there’s any argument about it. “It IS longer too,” Dave concedes. But then he’s taller than Redgie’s 5’4” by a couple of inches, if that counts for anything. Redgie says he hasn’t shaved since 1975. And while Dave says he’s always had a beard he agrees “it’s never been this length”, having decided four years ago – after releasing his collaborative ‘blue grit & rhyme’ album with fellow Raglan muso Peter Skandera – to go for the old-timer look. He’s certainly achieved that, looking these days not unlike an antipodean version of Texan legend Willie Nelson. Country, blues and jazz is Dave’s genre too, and a guitar the instrument of choice. Then there’s Redgie, not quite as tall as his double-bass with its warm and resonant sounds; the perfect complement to Dave’s guitar. The pair played together at this month’s ‘Live & Local’ gig down Stewart St at the Old School Arts Centre – Dave seated, wearing a cowboy hat, his selection of guitars at the ready; Redgie standing back a bit, plucking his double-bass “in the corner where I won’t be noticed”. They’ve lived in Raglan for decades now and toured together for that long too. They also feature regularly at ‘Live & Local’ sessions where musicians, songwriters, poets and storytellers come together to perform on the second Friday of every month. Dave reckons it’s a great atmosphere in the new upstairs performance room behind the 143-year-old school building. There’s always a good turnout – “a real home crowd” – and the ambience is palpable. Redgie agrees: “It’s a nice vibe and also a good platform for young, local musicians to get started, to get experience.” A lot of original music comes out of ‘Live & Local’ too, Dave reveals, acknowledging the many creative people in Whaingaroa. He’s also a music teacher here, encouraging home-grown talent every day, so he knows. Dave was impressed at the Old School’s special Matariki evening recently by the two young performers up before he and Redgie played – Anaru weaving together ancestral voices, percussion and strings; Maia sharing her love of classical guitar, including a waiata for the occasion. “I’ve taught classical guitar chords, and they’re not easy,” says Dave of Maia’s set. “She may’ve made a mistake or two but just carried on”, he adds admiringly. Redgie and Dave’s long-time camaraderie dates back to the 70s and 80s when both used to play at music festivals held on Kiwi country singersongwriter John Hore’s Canterbury farm.

Bearded rockers Redgie Valente, left, and Dave Maybee. These early connections have lasted, says Dave. In fact the pair have just begun recording again with The Saddleblasters – a cowboy-country group formed back in the day – even playing a fundraiser seven months ago for Te Uku School. Other gigs come up at bars and RSAs, says Dave. But the onetime member of Raglan’s legendary Mudsharks reckons the Old School stuff with a home crowd audience makes a nice contrast. “They’re not drunk,” he laughs. And it’s a very good sound room, Redgie chimes in, the acoustic panels

taking it to the “next level”. A bit small maybe with seating for 50 only, but against that it’s more intimate. The pair believes these regular events at the Old School – warm and welcoming, family-friendly – act as a magnet for visitors and locals alike. It’s about growing a culture of arts and music within our community, says Dave, and our grandchildren will be immersed in it. ‘Live & Local’ happens at the Old School in Stewart St second Friday of the month, 7.30-9.30pm. Adults $10 or koha, under 18s free. Licensed bar and cafe open.

Microchipping Your Pet

Update from Raglan Volunteer Coastguard from Raglan Volunteer Coastguard

T

here is more to Raglan Volunteer Coastguard than saving lives at sea.

A

s you have probably heard or noticed in our small town, we’ve had a number of wandering and lost dogs. Thanks to social media and our local vet clinic, we have manged to unite dogs and owners… most of the time. However, the issue we face at the clinic, is not being able to locate or contact owners as soon as possible. This can be achieved by MICROCHIPPING your dog!! They will automatically be registered here, but you can also register nationwide if you are ever moving out of town. It’s inexpensive and will hopefully avoid any trip over the hill to the Pound. You can microchip your cat also – renowned for wandering and getting lost when moving house. If found or injured, the vet clinic is the first place to come and find their owners. $48 or $68 for national register at Anexa Vets .

ALL OVER

Every Wednesday we train our crew, and we actively seek training that can also leverage the success and upskilling of other local Trusts. In May 2026 our Rescue Watercraft (RWC) crew were out training with a new piece of kit; trialling the inflatable rescue tube. A rescue tube is a lightweight, inflatable device designed to provide immediate flotation in the water. We train to use it to support unconscious patients during swim rescues, assist conscious patients to stay afloat, and provide extra buoyancy when it’s needed most. Simple, effective, and a valuable addition to our toolkit. Massive credit to the crew for getting out there on a cold, dark night and putting in the work. Some new Statistics (past year):

It was an incredibly informative session and an awesome reminder of the strength of our local emergency volunteer network. Huge thanks to our Raglan FENZ for sharing their expertise! Thank You to Meridian Energy. Another update from our Shorecrew on the fundraising campaign for the new vessel; a thank you to Meridian Energy https://www.meridianenergy.co.nz/ for their support towards the electronics in the new boat build. We are so grateful for all of the Trusts and donors that are stepping in to realise this incredible asset for our community. Our old Vessel Gallagher Rescue has served her time; at over 25 years of service she has rescued and brought home many. We know that the new vessel will enable Raglan Volunteer Community Coastguard to remain operational for generations to come. Thanks Meridian, it's great to have you part of this journey. Water-race Track kauri get help Winter Enrichment Fun for Floofs! from the air and on the ground with Floofsters - Doggy Daycare

from Department of Conservation

F

our days of hard work by a team of DOC staff has resulted in an important track surface

upgrade, protecting kauri on the western side of Mt Karioi near Raglan. As its name suggests, the Water-race Track follows an earthen trench which was part of an historic water race, through which water was diverted from a nearby stream, flowing along several wooden aqueducts to a small power station near the beach. In 1924, the water race provided the water supply to power a generator providing electricity for the nearby Bryant Convalescent Home for Children. Today, it is part of a wider network of tracks DOC manages on and around Karioi and is surrounded by a stand of about 20 15-year-old kauri, measuring up to 10m in height and 40cm in diameter. DOC Waikato Biodiversity and Heritage Ranger, Jack Garland, says resurfacing the track has required 59 tonnes of gravel, flown in by helicopter over the first two days of the job. “The track was fairly basic, and would become very muddy after rain,” Jack says.

S

ometimes it’s just too cold, dark, or rainy to venture out for a walk, but your Floof still needs activity to keep them happy, tired, and calm. But we have good news - just 15 minutes of brain-work can tire dogs out as much as an hour of walking!

“So to improve the experience for visitors, and ensure we met our kauri protection responsibilities, we wanted to resurface it. “We’ve had kauri hygiene stations at either end of the track for a while, and resurfacing the track with gravel helps reduce the risk of spreading kauri disease.”

Mental enrichment like obedience and trick training or activities that tap into their natural instincts like sniffing, chewing and digging, can be just as tiring as physical exercise, and it's a great way to keep tails wagging when it's too wet to head outside. Try these rainy-day activities with your Floof this winter: 1. LickiMat. Spread peanut butter (100% peanuts only) or yoghurt on your LikiMat, or crack an egg, spread around and microwave it in 30-sec increments until fully cooked through and cool. The repetitive licking is calming and can keep them happily occupied for at least 15-20 minutes. 2. Toilet roll treasure hunt! Pop a few treats inside empty cardboard toilet rolls, fold both ends over, and hide them around the house for your dog to sniff them out and tear them up. It's simple, cheap and gives their brain a workout. 3. Destruction Boxes! Fill a cardboard box with toys, scrunched-up paper, towels, empty boxes and other clean recyclables. Scatter and hide treats inside and let your dog sniff, dig and shred! It's a fun way to satisfy those natural foraging and tearing instincts. Add on 15-minutes of playtime or working on tricks and training to really connect with your Floof while tiring out their brain! While it doesn’t replace their cardio and zoomies, enrichment is an important tool to keep your dog happy, relaxed, and mentally fulfilled when the weather has other ideas. So next time the rain is pouring down, stay inside and let the indoor adventures begin.

The 59 tonnes of gravel required about 60 helicopter drops, which were made more challenging by the need to lower the chopper’s bucket through forest canopy to ensure the gravel was dropped onto the track. Although not steep, the track does undulate, with the DOC team working on an 800m stretch. “Spreading gravel is hard physical work for the team, even with the use of a compactor to firm up the surface,” says Jack. "It’s been a big effort for the guys.” Jack says there’s another few hundred metres of resurfacing required beyond the kauri stand, which will be completed later with ground-based equipment. “The Water-race Track is particularly popular with locals who want to go naturing, or access the beach, and we’ve already had some positive feedback from people passing by while we’ve been on the job. "We’re hopeful the residents who use the track will like the improvements, and appreciate the effort we’ve put in.”

New manager brings fresh vision to Raglan Club by Robyn Riddle

A

recent tip-off that the Raglan Club had employed a new manager got me thinking. Realising I didn’t know much about the Club or its manager, I decided to do a bit of research on both. Although the Raglan Club opened in 1956, it was only in the mid-1990s that it was decided a manager needed to be employed. The Club had grown so much that it was no longer feasible for volunteers to run it. Firstly, the manager. He is Shashank Kohli, originally from India, where he owns and runs a hotel from afar, and he has been in his new job for a couple of months. He says Raglan is one of the most beautiful places he has ever lived, despite having travelled extensively around the world. His previous roles in New Zealand were as outlet duty manager at the New Plymouth Club and food and beverage duty manager at the Novotel in the same city. Community clubs began appearing in many small towns early in the 20th century. This was particularly the case in “dry areas” such as the King Country, where the sale of alcohol was banned. These were known as chartered clubs and provided places where members could socialise and drink. As long as members behaved themselves, the local constabulary usually turned a blind eye to the consumption of alcohol. Historian Jock Phillips sheds some light on the subject in his article, “Men’s Clubs”. He comments that men have always enjoyed spending time with their mates. Most workplaces were male-dominated in the 19th century, so it made sense that men would socialise together too. “Men’s clubs were set up primarily so that men could socialize with other men”, rather than having a focus on sport or community service. The types of clubs mentioned included gentlemen’s clubs. One example was

6 RAGLAN Chronicle

Wellington’s Wakefield Club, which sought to preserve a “high British tone”. Affluent men could socialise, smoke, drink, dine and play billiards together “without the benefit of their womenfolk” being present. It was only in the 1990s that protests by women forced some change. The Dunedin Club, where some members reportedly said women would be admitted only over their dead bodies, finally allowed women to join in 2001. As clubs proliferated under different names, including cosmopolitan clubs, workingmen’s clubs and returned services clubs, it became clear that they mostly had the same purpose: to provide a safe environment where people could relax and socialise. It appears that dissatisfaction with hotels also spurred the establishment of clubs. Beer prices were considered too high and there was frustration with the service provided at local watering holes. This was certainly the case in Raglan in the early 1950s. As noted in a comprehensive history of the Raglan Club, written and produced for its 50th jubilee celebrations, all seemed settled and prosperous in Raglan at the time, but simmering discontent was growing louder. Locals “reckoned, with passion, the social amenities of the town were below par and the 6 o’clock swill had developed into a shambles”. The bars were said to be small and poorly equipped and, according to the majority, the hotel served the wrong brand of beer. Some venerable gentlemen got together, visited established clubs around the country and decided this was the answer to their problems. Because it was a solution for the community, created by the community, most initial resistance soon vanished. The first Raglan Club opened on 23 August 1956, with Harold Orr as its first president.

Sir Leslie Munro offered Lord Raglan’s family crest to the Club. Premises at the Cameron Estate were purchased in 1958 and the building also provided a room for women and children. Unlike the more exclusive gentlemen’s clubs, it was not long before women became members too. Their menfolk realised how much they could contribute, not least because they were great fundraisers. The Club, initially known as the Raglan Services Club and later the Raglan Services and Citizens’ Club, continued to expand its membership and buildings until it became what we see today. Although it was not a sports club, the Club always aligned itself with local sporting groups, most significantly the golf, bowling and fishing clubs. In 1998, it amalgamated fully with the Raglan Bowling Club. The Club has also long provided activities such as pool and darts for its members. Shashank says the Club hopes to strengthen and support its existing groups while also considering the introduction of new ones, so “there is something for everyone”. One of his goals is “to break the misconception that kids don’t belong at the Club”. He believes that, as it is a community club, families should feel welcome there. He would like to introduce activities such as junior pool nights, children’s special nights and other family activities, while making greater use of the Club’s outdoor areas. From the beginning, the executive agreed that “Goodwill, tolerance and common sense are necessary ingredients for all successful clubs”, and those sentiments have persisted. When I asked the new manager what he thought the purpose of the Club was, his reply aligned closely with the intentions of its founders. “I believe the purpose of the Raglan Club is to provide a welcoming, comfortable, and

affordable place for the local community – a place where people can relax without feeling they have to be fancy. Our members are more than customers; they’re part of our club family. As a club that has been part of Raglan for almost a century, we’ve grown alongside the community and have always aimed to make a positive contribution wherever we can.” And what of the RSA? I was a little confused about how it fitted in with the Club. Returned services associations proliferated in New Zealand from 1916 and were established to support returning soldiers and provide welfare services for them and their families. The first RSA in Raglan began in 1932 and was initially a branch of the Waikato RSA. It did not have its own premises, so meetings were held in private homes. The Club executive made it clear that “The Club will always show friendliness and consideration to members of the Raglan branch of the RSA and to RSA members generally”. Most RSA members also became members of the Raglan Club and came to regard it as their local headquarters, holding executive meetings and other functions there. This continues today, along with the tradition of returned service personnel, their families and friends gathering at the Club after the Anzac Day service each year. The Club continues to have a strong association with the RSA and 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery. It holds memorabilia relating to the battery, which is exhibited in display cases at the Club. Seventy years on, the Raglan Club continues to grow and fulfil its original intentions. Long may that continue. We wish Shashank well as he puts his skills and energy into ensuring it does. Some final positive words from him: “My vision is simple: to create a place where everyone feels they belong. I want the Raglan Club to continue offering quality facilities, strong social groups, great entertainment, and a welcoming space that our members are proud to call their club. I know there is still plenty of work ahead, but with the right planning, a great team, and the support of our members, I'm confident we can continue building a club that serves the whole community for many years to come.”

Did you know the Government has changed the rules for how we vote? from Raglan Naturally Community Trust

R

aglan Naturally Community Trust, Taurikura and the Toitū Whaingaroa community are helping to get our community ready to vote in the 2026 general election. 2026 is a general election year. This is when we vote for the people and parties who will represent us in Parliament and form a government. Election day is 7 November 2026. Since the last election, the government has made a very big change to how we can vote. To be able to vote in the general election on 7 November 2026, you must be enrolled by midnight, Sunday 25th October. If you have moved you must also have updated your address before midnight Sunday 25th October. If you have not enrolled or changed your address by midnight Sunday 25th October, you will not be able to vote in the general election on 7 November 2026. This is a major change from the previous elections when you could enrol and vote at the same time. This will potentially affect hundreds of thousands of voters. During the 2023 general election, there were 450,000 people who enrolled to vote or changed their details during the 12-day period leading up to election day. In 2023, there were 110,000 people who enrolled to vote or changed their details on election day. Want to make your vote count - make sure you are enrolled Many people are not aware of the rule change made by this government. Because of this significant change, the Electoral Commission has a major focus on making sure we all are enrolled by 25th October.

Here are some key messages to share with whānau and friends. You can get more information from vote.nz If you are not enrolled, get enrolled now. Check to see whether your whānau and friends are enrolled. If they are not enrolled, help them to get enrolled. You can enrol online or using a paper form. (go to vote.nz) You can enrol to vote if you: • are 18 years or older; • are a New Zealand citizen or resident for electoral purposes; and • you’ve lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more at some time in your life. The Māori Electoral option - If you’re Māori and enrolling for the first time you can choose to be on either the Māori roll or the general roll. If you’re on the Māori roll, you’ll vote for a candidate in a Māori electorate. The Māori electorate for this area is Hauraki-Waikato. If you’re on the general roll, you’ll vote for a candidate in a general electorate. The general electorate for this area is Taranaki-King Country. Your roll choice doesn’t affect your party vote - every voter has the same options for their party vote. Numbers on the Māori roll also help to determine the total number of Māori electorates. You can't change rolls in the 3 months before election day. If you are already enrolled and want to change rolls, you need to make your choice by midnight, Thursday 6 August. Moved house since the last election? you must have updated your address before midnight Sunday 25th October.

Turn 18 before 7 November 2026? - you can submit an enrolment form now. On your birthday you’ll be added to the roll. Make sure to check after your birthday that you have been added. Got whānau and friends overseas? – make sure they are enrolled. You can enrol and vote from overseas if: • you are 18 years or older • you’ve lived in New Zealand for more than 12 months continuously at some time in your life; AND • You are a New Zealand citizen and have been in New Zealand within the past 3 years; OR • You are a resident for electoral purposes of New Zealand who has been in New Zealand within the past 12 months. If whānau or friends are enrolling from overseas, their electorate will be where they last lived for 1 month or more. Whānau experiencing homelessness those experiencing homelessness can enrol at the address where they spend a substantial part of their time. They can also enrol at the last residential address where they lived for at least 1 month, even if that was some time ago. A postal address where electoral mail, such as enrolment confirmations, can be sent is needed when you enrol to vote. The postal address can be a PO Box, or the address of a friend, family member, church or support group, but it needs to be someone who will agree to hold mail for the person to collect. Don’t want your details publicly available – apply to go on the confidential unpublished roll. Not everyone feels safe enough to have their details publicly available on the electoral roll, but that doesn’t mean they lose the right to vote.

If you’re concerned about your personal safety, or that of your family, you can apply to go on the unpublished roll - this means your enrolment details do not appear on the printed electoral roll. Go to vote.nz for more details on how to enrol on the unpublished roll. Not sure if you are enrolled or want to check your details – check your details online to make sure you are enrolled. Enrolling isn’t something you do once. You need to keep your enrollment up to date so you’re ready to vote. The details you enter need to be an exact match for the details on file. If you have any problems you can call freephone 0800 36 76 56 and the Electoral team can check for you. You can search for your enrolment details online at vote.nz. Remember that to vote in the general election on November 7th you must be enrolled by midnight Sunday 25th October. We only get this opportunity every three years. Make sure your vote counts. If you need any help to enrol or want our help to get people enrolled contact the Toitū Whaingaroa team on michelle@ raglannaturally.co.nz

Whaea Lucy is often in the lounge working on a jigsaw and is always happy to chat. Whaea Pania also visits and is always up for a conversation. We have a blood pressure machine available for anyone who would like to check their blood pressure in a relaxed environment. Please remember to phone us on 07 825 8142 to book the health shuttle for medical appointments in Hamilton. The AA driver licensing service will be in the basement on Friday, 24 July. You can scan the notice in our outside window to make an appointment or phone 0800 822 422. The service will visit every two months on a Friday.

An Opportunity for Innovation By Emma Simpson @ Xtreme Zero Waste In April we announced our new 11-year contract with the Waikato District Council to continue servicing the Raglan community. In essence the services you receive won't be changing, BUT the kerbside collection methodology (the way we do things) is, and that's where things get interesting. Prepare to take a look behind the scenes. But first; It's worth pausing to think about what the contract represents. Alongside Waiuku, Raglan is the only township in Aotearoa where all kerbside collections — landfill, recycling, and food waste — are managed entirely locally. Local people doing the mahi equals resources staying in the community. Part of that innovation means creating a methodology that works for our community as it is — Raglan’s notoriously narrow roads, our existing trucks, employees and all. Designed by our Operations Manager Nenya Chapman (who we’re introducing in our new segment) we have two new trailers, purpose-built with a strong focus on Health & Safety, while retaining current employment and high diversion rate. Quite the balancing exercise, which required a fully customised solution. To involve you in the fun, you’ll see the design renders of the blueprints below, currently being constructed. Unit One handles glass and cardboard: glass sorted by colour at the kerbside directly into six waist-height bins, with trailer sides that fold out into a sorting bench mid-run and fold back down between stretches; cardboard separated and caged. Unit Two handles mixed recycling and food scraps: recyclables hand sorted by our crew on the run into secured cages, food scraps tipped directly on return into our Horizontal Composting Unit, with no manual unloading required. Our collections team and runners are some of the hardest working, most humble people on our crew — out there every week, in all weather, without fuss. The biggest change you'll notice is that our runners will no longer ride on the trailers. They'll continue sorting and separating on the run, but more of the sorting will happen back on site in our wee MuRF. As Raglan continues to grow, so does our commitment to maintaining high levels of service, increasing diversion, and strengthening community engagement. XZW began as a grassroots initiative and that spirit hasn't changed - you can see it in every corner of our site. Part of what's coming next is a new recycling wall, currently under construction, designed to make dropping off your recycling easier and more enjoyable! Another small piece of a much bigger picture. Bring on a season of positive change.

The Faces of Xtreme First up, our recently appointed Operations Manager, Nenya Chapman. Nenya has been an absolute powerhouse at Xtreme for over 10 years long before she stepped into her official Operations Manager role. Passionate about people and the environment, deeply connected to our Raglan community, and somehow able to keep up with the plethora of moving parts that make Xtreme tick, she has been a driving force to push us positively forward into our next chapter. When she's not keeping our team running smoothly, you'll probably find her training for her upcoming half marathon in August (literally running), supporting the community she loves, or being the only person on earth who wakes up before their alarm and springs into action (even at 4am)

Discover the Environment Centre Hub From Whāingaroa Environment Centre A new chapter is beginning at Te Pokapū Taiao o Whāingaroa/Whāingaroa Environment Centre Hub located in the Raglan Town Hall, with Merve Yeşilkır stepping into the role of Centre Hub Coordinator. Originally from a farming village in the Black Sea region of Türkiye, Merve grew up immersed in food growing, foraging and nature. She now works as a permaculture designer, educator and facilitator, bringing practical skills, ecological knowledge and a passion for community resilience to the role. Jasmine Hunter, who has coordinated the Centre Hub for almost 9 years is now focusing on her wider roles as Operations Manager of the environment centre and Funding Manager at Xtreme Zero Waste. The Hub is open from 12pm to 3pm, Tuesday to Friday. Here are just a few of the practical community resources you can access: The Seedbank is a collaboration with community gardeners to grow, save and store seeds, with a focus on heritage varieties acclimatised to local conditions. Saving seeds protects plant diversity and strengthens our community’s access to locally grown food. The free Seed Share Stand is placed outside the Hub whenever it is open and stocked with seasonal seeds from the Seedbank. Volunteers also meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 3pm to 4.30pm in the Raglan Community House basement to sort and package seeds. Everyone is welcome to help, share knowledge or contribute locally harvested seeds. The Whāingaroa Tool Library (not to be confused with the Toy Library) lends everything from electric gardening and building equipment to fabric cleaners and crockpots. Borrowing saves money, prevents tools from sitting unused in garages and reduces the need to buy new items for occasional jobs. Membership costs $15 for three months at a time and is available to permanent Raglan residents. *Tools are for personal and domestic use only. Check out the tool inventory here: whaingaroa.org.nz/tool-library Drop into the Environment Centre Hub during our open hours to meet Merve, collect seeds, explore the Tool Library or find out how you can get involved with any of our other projects or learn more about our mahi on our website.

Raglan Ukulele Festival is back! supplied

T

he Raglan Ukulele Festival is back after a threeyear break.

Known as a fun and friendly boutique festival, RUF attracts ukulele players from Raglan and further afield, including Taupō and Mangawhai. All ukulele players are welcome, with opportunities to brush up on musical skills, perform and play alongside others. The festival will be held from Friday, 4 September to Sunday, 6 September. Saturday is the main festival day, with additional events on Friday and Sunday for those staying for the whole weekend. The festival pass covers all Saturday events. Morning workshops will focus on ukulele playing, singing, rhythm and percussion, and waiata. There will also be a session on arranging music and a panel discussion for ukulele bassists, dubbed the “bass players’ support group”. Organisers joke that they have been told it is lonely at the bottom. The afternoon programme includes open mic concerts for solo performers, duos, trios and groups. Performers must sign up in advance. There will also be a strum-along session, with words and chords displayed on a screen so everyone can join in. The Saturday evening concert at the Raglan Club is open to the public, with door sales available for those without festival passes. The concert will feature the Sing’nUke Folk & Blues Band, led by Paul Jonson. Paul is a regular performer and workshop presenter at ukulele festivals throughout Australasia and around the world, and is known for his dynamic blues and ragtime playing. Local ukulele groups The Ragtimers, Blister Sisters and The Blukes will also perform.

A new event this year is a pub singalong at the Harbour View Hotel early on Friday evening to welcome festivalgoers arriving in town. On Sunday, 6 September, ukulele acts will perform at venues around Raglan, finishing with a lunchtime concert at the pub. These additional events are open to everyone. Saturday festival passes are limited and bookings are now open. Raglan Ukulele Festival Friday, 4 September to Sunday, 6 September Full information and the booking form are available at www.ruf.co.nz.

Why you can hear… but still struggle to understand supplied

“I

can hear people talking, but I just can’t make out the words.” If you’ve ever said this, you’re not alone. Most people think hearing happens in the ears. It doesn’t. Your ears simply collect sound. It’s your brain that sorts, filters and makes sense of what you’re hearing. In fact, hearing is as much a brain function as it is an ear function. When that connection between the ears and the brain isn’t working efficiently, everyday listening can become exhausting. Conversations in cafés become overwhelming, background noise seems louder than the person you’re trying to listen to, and following discussions can require enormous effort. This can affect people of all ages. Children may struggle to learn, concentrate or follow instructions. Adults may feel socially withdrawn, tired from listening, or frustrated that their hearing aids aren’t delivering the improvement they expected.

At Bounse, New Zealand’s only Specialist Hearing Brain Performance Clinic, we look beyond the ears. We assess not only how well you hear sounds, but also how your brain processes them. Often, people experiencing significant listening difficulties have “normal” hearing tests. Understanding your unique hearing brain allows us to provide personalised solutions, including auditory training, hearing technology and practical strategies that can dramatically improve communication, confidence and quality of life. We’re also delighted to bring these specialist services closer to the Raglan community. You no longer need to travel to Hamilton for comprehensive hearing and auditory processing assessments. We’re now consulting from the new Raglan Physiotherapy premises at 17B Wallis Street. Listening well changes lives. It helps children thrive at school, keeps adults connected to family and friends, and

Raglan Junior Rugby Club farewells a legend: President Jacqui Smith from Emma Snowden

T

here are people who volunteer, and then there are people like Jacqui Smith. For many years, Jacqui has been the heart and soul of the Raglan Junior Rugby Club. Since taking on the role of President in 2022, she has led our club with unwavering dedication and genuine love for junior rugby and the children who play it.

Over the years, Jacqui has managed countless teams, volunteered thousands of hours of her own time, travelled throughout the Waikato for late Sunday night meetings, organised registrations, sorted uniforms, chased sponsorship, applied for funding, coordinated volunteers, solved problems before anyone else even knew they existed, and quietly taken care of the endless behindthe-scenes jobs that keep a club running. She has personally invested dollars into the club, never seeking recognition or praise—only wanting every child to have the opportunity to play rugby, belong to a team, and create lifelong memories.

Jacqui's journey with the club began long before she became President. She has watched two of her boys proudly wear the green and black jersey, both going on to represent the Southern Bears representative teams. Today, she still stands proudly on the Jacqui has always put our players first. sidelines supporting her youngest son as he Every decision she has made has come from plays in our 10th Grade team. a place of kindness, fairness, and a desire to

give every child the best possible experience. Her heart has always been with the kids, and that is what has made her such an inspirational leader. Many people see what happens on the field each Saturday. Few ever see the countless hours, late nights, phone calls, emails, meetings, fundraising, sponsorship applications, and planning that happen behind the scenes. Jacqui has carried so much of that workload with determination, resilience, and grace. Calling her an absolute legend doesn't even begin to describe the impact she has had on Raglan Junior Rugby Club. As Jacqui steps down as President, we want her to know just how deeply appreciated she is. Her commitment, generosity,

leadership, and passion have helped shape our club into what it is today. The lives she has touched and the opportunities she has created for hundreds of young rugby players will leave a legacy that will be felt for many years to come. From every player, coach, manager, volunteer, parent, and whānau who has been fortunate enough to be part of this club during your time, thank you. Thank you for believing in our kids. Thank you for believing in our club Thank you for giving so much of yourself. Raglan Junior Rugby Club is stronger because of you, and your legacy will never be forgotten. Thank you, Jacqui

Update from Raglan Football Club supplied

W

e hope you’ve all had a wonderful break away over

the school holidays, most of us had no reprieve from Football as this year we’ve been gifted with FIFA!! What fun it’s been to get fully emotionally involved with football at its best.

Thanks to the Harbour View Hotel for being a go-to-venue for Football watching, and thanks to all the random homes and garages that have created sanctuaries for Football watching around Whaingaroa. As a Junior Football club we often encourage our young players to watch football, and as coaches and managers we are really seeing

the positive effect of excellent football watching influencing our players to take it up a step in their practice and games. The epitome of role modelling in sport.

and planning now for MVP & MIP … we know how important this is for our players and we need coaches, managers and whanau to help get this sorted asap. CHEERS!

As FIFA comes to a close we get into the second half of our football season, we often see our teams gain in collective confidence. Our youngest players are growing in confidence and are now going for the ball. The older players are building their sense of team with established friendships and team player predictability. And our eldest teams have the taste of competitiveness. We are seeing very tired players coming off the pitch at half time and this is awesome to watch one the sidelines. Our Raglan players are giving everything they've got; representing Whaingaroa both Home and Away.

And breaking news: our Raglan Football Club Holiday Club (Pilot Day) is ready to launch! Wednesday 30th September 10am 2pm

The RFC committee wishes you all a wonderful second half of the season - with more team stories to share over coming weeks. Plus; first kicks photo days, prizegiving and musters for those players wishing to extend their skills across the Waikato / Bay of Plenty.

This will be led by some of our incredible ex-players and coaches. If you are keen to book a place for your tamariki on this, please contact Katie: katie@fohboh.online Cost will be $20 per child (sponsored places available for those in need). This club is open to ALL children; cousins, visitors, and anyone keen to play football in the next school holidays. Your child does not need to be a member of Raglan Football Club to enroll, ALL welcome.

WE NEED THE SHIELDS from 2025; players are starting the second half of the season, but the committee now race to deliver for our end of season. All Shields, trophies
