hree new buildings have been officially opened by Ngāti Māhanga/Hourua at Raglan Holiday Park Papahua.

The buildings include a conference room (whare hui) and two stand alone four unit accommodation bunk rooms which are available for community groups, school groups, corporate and private functions.

Papahua camp manager Pam Ryan and staff have juggled the demands

of a busy holiday season with a tight build schedule and consenting process to successfully complete another stage of building accommodation capacity on Papahua.

The work has been a collaborative one with Waikato District Council, Ngāti Māhanga /Hourua, the Papahua Camp Board, and Raglan Community Board working together to provide recreational spaces and potential opportunities for our communities.

Susan - book in hand - at home among her creations.

N

oted ceramic artist and tutor Susan Flight has turned author in her eighties to pen a colourful chronicle of “my life and other creations”.

First copies of the coffee-table book ‘Taking Flight’ – the text to which took Susan a lot of writing and re-writing last winter – came by post before Christmas, but the full shipment from China is set to arrive in time for her book launch next month at David Lloyd Gallery in Hamilton.

Despite her central role in the book’s production it still feels “surprising” to have the story of her life and life works in print, Susan told the Chronicle from her home studio – a converted corrugated iron shearing shed in Waimaunga Rd on the slopes of Mt Karioi.

“But if people read it and like it then that will feel pretty nice,” she added humbly.

The 60-page book is liberally illustrated both with photographs and more than 100 colour plates of her artworks.

Susan’s particularly proud of the book’s cover design which shows a piece of her fabric art – a kite – superimposed on her sweeping view towards two mountains and Aotea Harbour.

“All my work was on kites when I was trying to escape from a marriage,” she laughs.

That was some time ago when Susan worked mainly in textiles and had yet to move on to the sculptural clay-work she specialises in at her Raglan studio, Mountain Dreaming Arts Workshop.

The marriage was one of three she felt the need to escape from, she says, and the kite an obvious metaphor.

There’s always a story behind her art, Susan reveals. In clay for instance her preference is for “narrative” work rather than throwing pots. “I can throw but I don’t (very often).”

The title of her book, ‘Taking Flight’, is a story in itself. After a few marriages and name changes Susan decided 40-odd years ago to be who she wished, taking on her “resourceful” great-grandmother’s name which was Flight.

She says it gave her the determination to continue to live the creative lifestyle, having started out as an art teacher then becoming a printmaker, textile worker and finally a sculptor in clay.

Susan’s received numerous study awards and grants along the way including 16 exhibition awards for sculpture, textiles and printmaking in Australia and New Zealand. She’s tutored in both countries including at the Waikato Society of Arts in Hamilton, summer schools in Raglan and at her own Mountain Dreaming workshop where the surroundings inspire her.

“Summer schools in Raglan had special interest to me as we had saved the Old School Arts Centre from demolition and it was all set to grow,” she says in her book.

It was a dozen or more years ago that Susan chose to finally settle in Raglan, establishing a studio with kilns in the basement of her shearing shed turned home. Like-minded potters – some local, others from further afield – gather there regularly, and every two years work towards an exhibition at the old school in Stewart St. This year the group’s creating intricate pipes and whistles for a display coming up in a few months. “Not everybody likes pipes (of the smoking variety) but we all like whistles,” Susan says of the unusual subject matter.

At age 82 she shows no signs of slowing down in her artistic endeavours – many creations now taking up the wall, table and floor space of her simple, openplan abode with kitchen at one end, bed at the other.

“Only creativity matters, and the ability to be creative,” says this staunch octogenarian. “Life’s pretty good eh,” she adds with a smile.

An occasional column with Aaron Mooar, Station Manager of Raglan Community Radio and the host of the Morning Show.

I

was once refused an interview by a senior manager at Waikato District Council. This was the same manager who oversaw the spate of sewerage spills we had a few years ago. He was a bureaucrat who seemed out of touch with the reality in Raglan and after a watching several of his staff leave I requested an interview so I could ask him if he was also going to resign over his poor performance.

Given that he knew the questions in advance I wasn’t surprised when he told me I was “irresponsible” and declined the interview. Whether or not I was the first person to make the suggestion to him I don’t know but a few months later he did in fact resign.

I imagine a lot of people will enjoy this story but what I really want to say is that this guy was the exception, not the rule and the reason I want to say it is because of the amazing amount of abuse I see our community directing at the council.

I see a lot of the council and they are simply not deserving of the treatment we give them, either at public meetings or online.

A case in point: Council recently applied into the Provincial Growth Fund to do $2.5 million worth of work on the Wharf.

The Wharf was the only thing in our community that was eligible for funding so staff worked hard to put a case together in the short amount of time they had available and got the job done.

A news item about this was posted on the Raglan noticeboard and immediately people were piling on the abuse. One memorable commenter even accused the council of wasting yet more of the ratepayers money - clearly unaware of the elementary fact that this was an application for government funding that would actually save local ratepayers money.

I wouldn’t normally give oxygen to a-grade ignorance like this but what happened next is that one of the staff who had put the application together made the mistake of reading the comments on the noticeboard. I can only imagine how deflating it was to put in all that effort on our behalf only to be greeted with wall to wall abuse at the end of it.

I can’t imagine he’ll want to put in extra effort for us again and I wouldn’t blame him or anyone else at council if they kept well away from Raglan, given the treatment they’re likely to get from us.

Obviously the council does make mistakes - and I’ll continue to point them

and to their credit our community board has worked hard to improve its relationship with the staff over the last 3 years.

It would just be nice if the rest of us stopped undermining their efforts so much.

Soundsystem makes music and creativity happen in the community B

udding local musos built a transportable community soundsystem and got to test their skills in MCing, DJing, songwriting, live performance, music production and music video creation in a week-long music making project.

The project is designed to engage a community in creative skills and discover the possibilities of work within the music, technology and design industries.

Dubbed Ahurei Vibes, the 20 local participants aged 13-19 crafted two music tracks they then performed last Saturday for the community, alongside a live performance and a DJ set all using the soundsystem they built.

From the two original tracks, the youth chose Anti Lonely for a video that was shot with the help of local videographer Dom Zapata and the soundsystem also was used for a fire show at the skate park.

The soundsystem is run by battery which makes it accessible for community events without the need for mains power, which means creativity and entertainment can take place anywhere.

Run at Raglan Area School with the support of teacher Joseph Rao, the Sound System Project NZ was brought to Raglan by Tamar Lazarus after running a successful Sound System programme in Scotland and this is the first international extension of the preoject.

"We are so humbled to work with such talented youth and want to thank them and their families for the massive after school effort. We feel very blessed to be welcomed to such an amazing, beautiful and generous community.”

The youth were supported by international musos Tom Spirals and Anders Rigg from Samson Sounds, Scotland and local MC Emily Jane Sandford-May AKA Jinja Cat and local young musicians Rieki and Kaea Ruawai.

The project was made possible through joint funding from Soundsplash and Waikato District Council.

Tamar welcomes the support of local musicians and creative minds for future projects in Raglan.

“We look forward to continuing to support the community in creating further events and training and anyone in the community who wishes to engage and create or use the soundsystem with the youth can join the project.”

Raglan provides nurturing to get sellout show back on road R aglan has been nurturing up-andcoming artist Cian Gardner as she rehearses her one-woman show Sorry For Your Loss at the Old School Arts Centre.

Cian Gardner's one-woman show, Sorry For Your Loss, will show at the Town Hall on March 7.

She was so taken with the aroha she felt in Raglan that she is performing a ‘pay what you can’ show at the Raglan Town Hall on Saturday, March 7 at 7.30pm before embarking on a Wellington tour later in the month.

“I’ve really enjoyed rehearsing in Raglan. The Old School is such a nice space and it’s been great to take a break and go for a walk on the beach. This show is an offering to Raglan for taking us under their wing.”

Written and performed by Cian, Sorry For Your Loss debuted at Hamilton’s Toi Wāhine Festival to sellout audiences last year.

In a true coming-of-age story, Cian explores the effects of having a sometimes-there-mostly-not Dad and ultimately the story becomes the gift of strength from one woman to another.

The dialogue is gritty, humorous and very relatable, and Cian uses physicality rather than props to recreate her

characters, which include her mother, father and herself at various ages.

A raw and real performance, Sorry For Your Loss sees Cian open up to the audience and expose something she never thought she needed to revisit.

Born out of Cian’s involvement in Waikato New Works Incubator Programme, Sorry For Your Loss was a creative accident.

She thought she had put her journey to find her father behind her, but it was here she came face-to-face with a cousin who features in the show. The meeting of the cousins was awkward at first, so awkward a fellow actor questioned the pair about what was happening.

Upon hearing the story, Cian’s colleague was adamant that this was her show.

“After that I really started to own the story,’ she says.

With the blessing from her father’s family, Cian embarked on telling the story of her search for father and her identity as a part Māori girl growing up with a Pakeha mother.

The Creative New Zealand Ngā Manu Pīrere Award recipient in 2019

which recognises artistic achievement for those at an early stage of their career, Cian has been a rising star in Waikato theatre.

Since graduating from the University of Waikato, she founded her own theatre company, Cove Theatre, which focuses on getting local stories on stage and placing people who are not always given the spotlight, centre stage.

“As a performer I could not find the type of theatre with stories that reflected people from my community. I felt as though there was not a base for Māori storytelling in the Waikato, so I decided to start my own”.

In Sorry For Your Loss, Cian has teamed up with a couple of Raglan creatives - theatre director and dramaturg Laura Haughey, who brings her unique physical approach to the storytelling in this original, and the live music is performed by local maestro Andy Duggan.

Māui dolphins: So what's all the fuss?

Dolphins are always exciting to see, especially in Raglan where the thrill of watching Orca in the harbor is a treat that ripples through town. Much smaller than their 9 metre long Orca cousins, Māui (1.5m) dolphin also make their home on the West coast. Like the kiwi, Māui dolphin are endemic to New Zealand which means they are found nowhere else in the world. Māui dolphins and our marine ecosystem, are under pressure from many different threats which act cumulatively. These include pollution, becoming entangled in fishing nets, lack of food and disease, among a number of other factors. Due to this, there has been a rapid decline in the Māui dolphin population to only an estimated 63 left. This means the species is on the edge of extinction. In response to the threat of losing this taonga, big steps have to be taken to protect the little Māui.

We need everyone to report sightings so more can be understood about their range, this provides What can you do? evidence to make the best decisions for Māui dolphin conservation.

Public sightings have been used in the past to help inform where protected areas should be. The more information you can provide, the more reliable the sighting will be, and the more applications your sighting will have for conservation and science. If you think you have spotted a Māui dolphin, call 0800 DOC HOT

Fishing or boating?

Report any sightings - include location (coordinates if you have a GPS on your boat), number seen, time and date. Also, take pictures/video if possible and include landmarks in the frame. Keep all vessels a safe distance away from the Dolphins (300 metres) and if you do spot some dolphins use a no wake speed’.

Avoid loud or sudden noises that could startle dolphins. Manoeuvre your boat carefully. Do not obstruct their path, cut through a group, or separate mothers from calves.

Don’t use set nets where dolphins may be found. Stay with your net – if you see a dolphin lift the net immediately. If you are in a protected area and see a set net – report it immediately. Set nets are prohibited up to 7 nautical miles off shore. Commercial trawl restrictions are up to 2 nautical miles off shore. Marine mammal sanctuary up to 12 nautical miles off shore (no seismic surveys or seabed mining) Do not swim with, try to touch the dolphins or feed them.

Do not litter.

Recycle and pick up any marine debris you see. Plastic pollution is a serious issue for the health of marine ecosystems. The plastics problem needs a two-prong solution: cleaning up what is already out there and stopping more from getting in. WEC’s rangers will support beach cleans and waste-wise behaviours. Spread the word of the plight of the Māui Dolphin. You can also support Māui dolphin conservation by participating in Māui Dolphin Day & the famous Recycled Raft Race - Saturday 28 March / 10:00am - 2:00pm / Papahua Domain and help celebrate this treasure of the sea Run, jump, paddle, row! Are you ready for the most impressive, hilarious, colourful, “fallaparty”, surprising, wet race you could ever be a part of? With just over a month to go before Māui Dolphin Day 2020, it’s time to start building your raft for the famous Recycled Raft Race!

The Recycled Raft Race was born in 2004 out of the wild and somewhat risky Recycled Trolley Derby that ran in XZW’s (Xtreme Zero Waste) first years. Some memorable rafts from the past include a bathtub, a hot water cylinder and an old car bonnet. Many rafts have sunk, been dragged over the finish line or have been rescued! Waitetuna School once put their entire senior class on one raft. That’s over 30 people! Having fun with our creative and resourceful community has been a focus from the start.

The Recycled Raft Race is a great project to do with your family, friends, organisation or group. Rafts must be made out of at least 80% recycled material. Come up to XZW and get a massive 50% off building materials or create a raft from what’s lying around your shed.

Due to safety reasons, the number of rafts are limited, so avoid disappointment and register now!

Public Notices Section 101 Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 ULO’S KITCHEN LIMITED, private company with its registered office at Harakeke Place, Raglan, has made application to the District Licensing Committee at Waikato for the issue of an on-licence in respect of premises situated at 6 Wallis Street, Raglan, known as “Ulo’s Kitchen”.

The general nature of the business to be conducted under the licence is restaurant.

The days on which and the hours during which alcohol is intended to be sold under the licence are Mondays to Sundays (inclusive), 9am to 10pm.

The application may be inspected during ordinary office hours at the office of the Waikato District Licensing Committee at 15 Galileo Street, Ngaruawahia.

Any person who is entitled to object and who wishes to object to the issue of the licence may, not later than 15 working days after the date of the publication of this notice, file a notice in writing of the objection with the Secretary of the District Licensing Committee at Waikato District Council, Private Bag 544, Ngaruawahia 3742.
