Matt’s Monologue “If you love the baby, don’t kill the baby” is another old saying, condensed, this time attributable to a wise king. (Soloman) Water quality in our streams and rivers is a pretty topical issue and like many environmental issues personal agendas, belief systems, and ignorance sometimes override empirical knowledge and science.

I am looking at the September 2018 WEST COAST NEWS pamphlet compiled by Waikato Regional Council and am aghast the blatant environmental vandalism shown on the front page photo is described as the Aramiro Restoration Project.

Ripping out all the existing willow trees before riparian planting turns the aquatic environment into a barren drain and the unstable river banks erode during rain events eventually smothering the aquatic life in estuarine environments, including our harbour.

Pipi and cockles do not grow or breed when deluged with tonnes of suspended solids. Those shellfish use all their energy expelling the silt from their system in an attempt at survival.

The silt contributes to smothering and a breakdown of the aquatic food chain and has some cumulative effect in compromising the survival opportunities of Maui dolphins. We also have an accumulation of cadmium in our harbours.

Willow trees are the only tree on the planet that can have their roots directly in the water absorbing phosphates and nitrates as well as being one of the best trees on the planet at sequestering heavy metals including cadmium. The willow has a superior inherent ability at bioremediation and phytoremediation than all but a couple of other plant species.

Bioremediation is the ability of enzymes in the roots of plants to take complex toxic molecules and break those molecules down into simple inert (safe) molecules.

Willows are used internationally for remediating toxic sites such as timber treatment sites, toxic mine sites, around dairy effluent ponds and drains for nutrient uptake before release into receiving waters and of course river bank stability and water quality improvement.

People often say, “but there never used to be willows”. We are dealing with a modified environment and have to evolve our thinking to involve knowledge and science. The

kahikatea and totara stands with kowhai are mostly gone now and some of the trees used for riparian planting are phytotoxic, that is, releasing toxins from leaves and bark into our waterways.

Willow roots in rivers create the holes and habitat that invertebrates, giant kokupu and long finned eels live in. Once the willows are gone the kokupu and long finned eels go with them Ask any eel fisherman. (empirical knowledge) No more dancing of the inanga, the heart stopping sudden appearance of the long finned eel head protruding from the river vegetation while on the hunt. The frenzy of the koura to avoid that long finned eel, the frantic koura leaping completely out of the water, sitting on the river bank until tentatively returning to it’s aquatic home after a sagacious elapsing of time. Their homes, environment, and habitat in that section of the river have all been ripped asunder.

Many places where riparian planting is taking place the willows are removed turning our waterways into barren drains with newly planted native trees along the banks.

Evolution and transition is better than change and destruction.

One of the reasons willows are removed is flood control. If you place your elbow on the desk in front of you and raise your hand vertically you can think of your arm as a stream or river. If you clear the willows on the inside of your elbow you release the flood waters. Leave the willows on the outside of your elbow you maintain bank stability and habitat.

Rather than making war on farmers and the environment we need to overcome belief systems and ignorance and make simple inexpensive improvements.

Common goals and best practice.

I had a meeting the other day with the Parliamentary Commissioner For The Environment to bring to his attention some science and best practice. It is time to stop paving the road to hell with good intention..

I must also acknowledge our Regional Councillor, Fred, as one of the few people who “gets it” and is slowly countering the tyranny and ignorance of some bureaucrats.

By informing on knowledge and science we can improve without killing the good farmers and the baby at the same time.

hree years of hard slog managing a gully restoration project that benefits an entire Hamilton community have won longtime Raglan educator Lyn Rogers one of New Zealand’s premier regional science excellence awards.

“I feel really honoured,” Lyn told the Chronicle from her Wainui Rd home last week, proudly displaying the Wintec Secondary Science Teacher/Educator Award presented recently at a Kudos Awards gala dinner at Claudelands Event Centre.

Lyn – who was picked from two other finalists in her category – says she also felt humbled at the accolade which celebrated “amazing people doing fantastic things” in the field of science.

She insists her success as manager and education coordinator of the Fairfield Project – which has transformed a disused gully area in danger of being sold off into a flourishing community garden, orchard and nursery – comes only as a result of teamwork which is backed by funding agencies and supported by the Ministry of Education.

Hamilton City Council was under pressure to increase urban biodiversity in the area at the time, Lyn explains, while NIWA was studying an endangered species of fish spawning in the gully stream.

Bryant Trust has also provided “significant funding” and Waikato River Authority supplied the trees for planting.

Lyn’s role has been to galvanise into action teachers and students from Fairfield College and Waikato Diocesan School for Girls, which both flank what’s known locally as Kukutaaruhe gully (now being developed through an education trust of the same name).

She has also had to engender community support along the way.

The gully took off as an educational space in 2017 with the first plantings by the community and all Year 9 students at Fairfield College, where coincidentally Lyn’s teaching career began. The past two years have seen the Dio girls included in the project, says Lyn, with pest control and planting to improve the ecosystem.

Many local primary schools are also involved, with Lyn at the helm integrating their sustainability programmes.

“The Fairfield Project has created education opportunities for anyone

connected with our kaupapa,” she says. “It is about the experience.”

While Lyn started out at Fairfield, she later taught at Raglan Area School for eight years where she became head of the science department. After helping implement the Enviroschools programme there, she took up an advisory role in environmental and science education for School Support Services at Waikato University.

Only after a return to Fairfield College as both science teacher and professional development coordinator did the ambitious Fairfield Project come her way, through the university’s Science Learning Hub. The challenge is ongoing and the focus now, she says, is to “engage” the surrounding property owners to further support the gully restoration.

While proud of what’s been achieved so far, she admits at having been hesitant to take up the Kudos Awards nomination for fear of not having done enough. But positive feedback from the schools and the funding organisations “has really affirmed why I said yes to the nomination”.

The 13th Annual Kudos Science Excellence Awards covered eight categories in all, for which there were a total of 19 nominations.

Minister announces funding to expand Para Kore M arae-based Para Kore programme, which started life in Whaingaroa, recently received a $528,000 grant from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund (WMF).

Associate Environment Minister Eugenie Sage travelled to Raglan to make the announcement, which forms part of the government’s plan to tackle New Zealand’s long term waste problem.

“It’s great to mark ten years of the Para Kore flax-roots kaupapa, which has begun a revolution in how Māori communities minimise their waste,” Eugenie Sage says.

“Since its humble beginnings with volunteer pilot programmes running on three Waikato marae, Para Kore now has a vision for all marae to be working towards zero waste by 2025.”

Para Kore manager Jacqui Forbes says the grant has helped the zero waste programme expand to four new regions - Te Tai Tokerau (Northland), Wairoa, Maniapoto (Waikato/Waitomo) and Wairarapa.

“We have most of the North Island covered now and this grant helps with our strategy to bring Para Kore to all of New Zealand,” Jacqui says.

Para Kore is a not-for-profit Māori organisation and its zero waste kaupapa is based on whakapapa to Papatūānuku. An experienced and skilled team work regionally to deliver the Para Kore

programme to marae and Māori communities.

Since 2008, Para Kore has expanded to operate in almost 400 marae, kohanga reo, kura or other Māori community organisations throughout much of the North Island.

The programme also provides education, wānanga, events and training in waste management, is responsible for more than 350 tonnes of waste being diverted from landfill and now employs 25, including 18 kaiārahi/regional waste advisors.

“Para Kore whānau are passionate and committed to achieving a zero waste Aotearoa by working together at their marae, the heart of their communities.

And they do it through māturanga Māori, te reo me tikanga Māori – that is Māori knowledge and the Māori way of doing things,” Sage says.

The WMF is funded through the waste disposal or landfill levy that was introduced under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008. Fifty per cent of the money collected from the levy is distributed to councils to spend in accordance with their Waste Management and Minimisation Plans. The remainder (minus administration costs) is used for the WMF, which is managed by the Ministry for the Environment.

As well as expanding around the country, Jacqui says Para Kore is always looking at new avenues to reduce waste. They are currently working on cloth alternatives to

Alongside this announcement, Sage also announced a consultation document on the Ministry for the Environment’s proposal for regulated product stewardship for six priority products - tyres, electrical and electronic products, agrichemicals and their containers, refrigerants and other synthetic

greenhouse gases, farm plastics, and packaging.

Jacqui says product stewardship would make producers responsible for their products at the end of life, and ensure the costs of proper waste management are paid by producers and consumers, not communities and the environment. For example, a consumer may pay extra to purchase a product but be able to dispose of the product for free. Or a

refundable deposit may be included in the price of a beverage and this deposit returned when the empty container is taken to a collection point.

She is encouraging people to make submissions to www. mfe.govt.nz/consultations/ priorityproducts by Friday 4 October at 5pm.

The unexpected encounter with the minister happened at Xtreme Zero Waste when the students were preparing possums they had trapped.

Williams-Hutchins, 16 and Moneisha Anderson, 16, were unaware of who they were actually meeting.

“We just bumped into her when we finished trapping. She was touching the possum fur and it was flying away and I said ‘that’s $5 please’,” Merehia says.

The young conservationists have a goal to earn $2500 selling the fur they hand pluck from possums they trap around the bush block at the back of Xtreme Zero Waste.

Their motto, conceived by Suso, is to protect the environment one trap at a time

and they’ve worked out they need to trap close to 400 possums to reach their goal.

Once they realised who they were meeting they took the opportunity to tell the minister about the programme which aims to develop skills in sustainable and ecological actions and enabling them to earn NCEA credits through hands-on practical conservation activities.

“It felt cool when we found out she was important,” Merehia says.

Sage is also Associate Environment Minister and was in Raglan to announce a grant of $528,000 for marae-based Para

Kore programme. She took time out to pop into Xtreme Zero Waste catching up with the Manaaki Ao students who do their practical study there on a Friday.

Tutors Duncan Mackay, Annie Lorenzen and Angela Prain - helped by Anne Windust and other Karioi instructors - run the outdoor classroom and introduce the students to a variety of local environmental issues, and initiate and develop sustainable solutions, such as the possum trapping, to address the issues facing their generation.

Voting for local body elections begins this week

T

he triennial local government elections are held this year with voting documents to be delivered to households during September 2025 .

Waikato is a growing district that is home to over 73,000 people. Our district spans 452,000ha which is 90% of the size of Auckland. The Waikato District Council is a

complex business that deals with $156m of revenue and $1.8b of assets. They provide around 25 very different businesses, from maintaining and upgrading the roading network, through to the management of water, wastewater and stormwater, looking after parks and reserves, recreation facilities and libraries, halls and community centres.

Council also oversees building and resource consents, district planning, noise and animal control and the inspection and licensing of premises. When disaster strikes, council also have a part to play in Civil Defence. The council is funded by the rates the community pay.

The Waikato district is one of the fastest growing districts in the country. Some of

the challenges we’re experiencing include housing, climate change, earthquake prone buildings and direction from Central Government. Our district is made up of many small communities that all want urban services and we certainly battle with rural economy of scale challenges.

With these issues in mind, voting is not just a right, it’s an opportunity to have your say on what’s important to you, your whānau and your community. This October 2019 is your chance to have a say on who represents your community and the Waikato district for the next three years.

“We’ve slowly got bigger over the years,” he says.

With most of the growth happening in the last 10-years, Rob now employs a crew of nine and Raglan Excavations is the largest excavation company in Raglan.

Much of the work they do is for Waikato District Council and in the new subdivisions, with jobs on new builds already lined up in the Rangitahi Peninsula development.

Rob says the support they receive from loyal customers is invaluable to their business.

“Without them we wouldn’t be here.”

I bring a number of skills to this role; I listen, I advocate passionately in council for positive outcomes for our community, I work collaboratively and have learnt that much of what I do is about building strong, cohesive relationships that are based on trust. I also offer integrity in the work that I do and will work tirelessly to achieve more for our communities.

Over the last three years I have actively worked on a number of key issues for our community. These have included decisions on upgrading our wastewater system, minimising overflows into our waterways and promoting our 3 P’s campaign. I have also actively engaged with hapū and iwi on a number of initiatives which have included Raglan Naturally community planning, our council Blueprinting process and Māori representation on council.

I have worked in collaboration with the Community Board and as Councillor a good working relationship with the Board is very important to decision making. We have collectively worked on the revitalisation of our Raglan Naturally community plan and some of our next steps will be prioritising community projects. We have also looked at ways that we can

address issues which include essential infrastructure such as parking, footpaths, roading and connectivity, it is challenging and we acknowledge that these challenges need further work.

I am also on the Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project committee, a community driven initiative working in collaboration with Council and other stakeholders to find solutions to the challenges around housing and affordability, this is crucial for our community.

Upcoming things for our community: • Solid Waste Review - planning for waste and its management across our district.

• District Plan review.

• Speed limit by-law review.

• Connectivity for shared walkway/ cycleways.

• Revocation of SH23 from Greenslade Road back to the entrance of town.

I am committed to building community resilience in the face of future challenges which include; rates sustainability, affordability and availability of housing, climate change, the upkeep of our unsealed roading, environmental and community well being, growth and preserving our sense of identity.

A little bit about me; I grew up on the northern side of Aotea harbour on our family farm at Te Makaka and I feel very lucky that my family is still farming our land. I am the youngest of 13 - so I am used to participating in large groups! I have two teenagers who both attend Raglan Area School and they are active in our community. I am in my second term as a member of the Board of Trustees at Raglan Area School, which I love as it allows me to be involved with our young people.

I am also on the Raglan Swimming Club committee and I am on the Board of the Raglan Business Chamber. I have for the past decade co-organised ‘The Karioi Classic - Cycle Ride’ as part of Raglan Events and Multisport Trust which is a non profit sports organisation. I also work part time at Trade Aid another role I love in our community.

I would like to thank and acknowledge Rangi Kereopa and Peter Haworth for their work on the community board and wish them the very best as they are not standing for re-election.

aglan Four Square really went the extra mile with its third annual Indian Cultural Night last Friday – and it showed in the free buffet dinner enjoyed by an estimated 1000-1500 locals at tables set up in the carpark of the enterprising supermarket.

Until now the massive catering job’s been undertaken close to home by store owner Satnam Bains’ family, but this year the various dishes were put together about 125km or 78 miles away in Takanini, in the kitchens of New Zealand’s largest Sikh temple.

As Auckland Council says on its website, “it’s nothing for the (Takakini temple) kitchens to feed a couple of thousand guests every weekend”.

Raglan Four Square bought the food fresh from the markets then donated $4000-5000 to the temple to turn it into a series of vegetarian dishes – a lentil curry (dahl), a chickpea curry, rice, chapati/roti and a traditional Indian pudding called rice kheer.

Satnam’s mum and other family were there overseeing things and the feast arrived in Raglan by truck about 6.45pm, “still warm” for the 7.30pm smorgasbord.

“Thank God it didn’t rain,” says store manager Andy Singh, particularly as there was a brief shower beforehand. He thinks that, just to be safe, they’ll have a large marquee or canopy on hand next year.

Entertainment included a live performance by the Bay of Plenty Sports & Cultural Club in which six

turbaned Indian men did the bhangra, a traditional Indian dance.

An oversized Mr Four Square man was also dancing the night away in the carpark. Supermarket vouchers were handed out for those best dressed in Indian theme, and Deb King from Xtreme Zero Waste was announced after a live draw as the winner of a family trip to Fiji worth $5000.

Satnam Bains says the annual shindig has a simple objective: “To raise awareness of our culture in the community and to thank the community for their support the whole year.”

Facebook posts on the night were full of praise for the event. “Got to be the coolest Four Square in NZ,” read one message, from Tayla Sowry.

ith Raglan Community Radio celebrating it’s 25th birthday this year, the Chronicle sat down for a chat with station manager, Aaron Mooar.

How long have you been station manager?

Since September 2012, when I became the station's first permanent employee.

What does it involve? What does your week actually look like?

Aside from the Morning Show at the start of the day, my week is incredibly random. I have to make sure the equipment stays operational and the automation software is behaving itself. I train up new DJs and help them if they have technical problems in the studio. I make the ads and jingles, raise money from grant funders and handle any queries from the public. Station Manager Aaron Mooar There are probably other things too that in Raglan over summer and we've just taken I've forgotten. I used to clean the studio but on three new DJs this week, who were all they gave that job to someone else because originally from overseas but are more or less I wasn't very good at it. The only thing I permanent residents here: Emma from the UK plays British music, Max from the US don't do is the book keeping.

What aspect of the position do you is doing a World Music show and Christian from Germany is playing Rock. There's enjoy the most?

Definitely the interviews during the two young women doing a hip hop show on Morning Show plus I love it when we get Monday night and our youngest DJs run the new DJs, I never know who is going to turn famous Peanut Butter Jammin' Time show on Wendesday nights in between studying up. for NCEA. I'm going to get in trouble with What is the most challenging? the rest of the DJs for not mentioning them The paperwork, it sends me to sleep.

Radio is definitely having to make way for newer forms of media and young people especially, are consuming media in a different way but a lot of people have been crying out for local flavour and local info now that the commercial networks are all based in Auckland so that's the thing that gives us a real sense of purpose.

You are involved in many aspects of the community with a passion to highlight important issues for the community to discuss. What projects are you most satisfied with in terms of bringing about change?

Well, we like to stick our nose into everything but I'm always asking guests about what they think makes Raglan

special. Almost everyone agrees Raglan has qualities that are worth retaining, but exactly what are those qualities, how did they come about, and how can we keep them, are really important questions to get answers to, otherwise we could end up like Mt Maunganui. Something else radio can contribute to is the local body elections which are coming up soon. We'll be broadcasting and podcasting interviews with all the candidates during September so people can get to know them.

The most visual of these - the Hamilton Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and Night Glow was a veritable labour of love for him and fellow balloonists when established in 1993.

In his memoir Graham tells, for the first time, why he felt compelled to eventually move this internationally acclaimed event, to Masterton. A decision he admits was the most painful of his life.

Graham recognised the need - and the potential - for a Building Display Centre in Hamilton. This he duly opened to much fanfare in 1979. The Waikato Home Show grew out of construction industry contacts developed in the ten years he ran Hamilton’s Building Display Centre.

What the Mind Can See, exposes the event-wizard’s ceaseless drive for innovation. The book’s back cover blurb tells us Graham ‘was a survivor, and an artist with a fine appreciation of aesthetics. He knew how to bring out the best in colleagues and associates.’

Hannah passed away suddenly in 2016 a few months into his retirement. His legacy lives on in the Waikato Home & Garden Show, with his daughter Rebecca Hannah at the helm as Exhibition Director. Her appointment followed Auckland-based North Port Events’ purchase of the Home Show in 2015.

Kinesiology: The Science of Movement in the Human Body

H

ippocrates (460 BC379BC) was the first physician to provide a written exercise prescription for a patient.

He recommended not overdoing it and he said “walking is the best”.

Hippocratic Oath states “first do no harm”.

A recent explosion of the elderly population and an increase longevity has highlighted the role of movement to keep the brain functioning especially during our golden years. Movement helps with breathing, stimulates the blood flow, aids digestion and the elimination of the bodies waste. The ability to walk, run, jump, swim, dance or just simply play on the beach with the grandchildren makes us feel happy.

Kinesiology (pronounced: kun-neezee-o-luh-jee) Throughout history many ancient civilizations advocated exercise as beneficial for health and wellbeing from India and China in the East to the Romans and Greeks in the West. It was not until 1854, that a Swedish medical gymnast Carl Georgii coined the phrase Kinesiology, from the Greek word kinesis meaning movement, and ology meaning science.

The idea spread throughout Europe and America through many different faculties, exercise science, physical education, sport movement, etc.

Applied Kinesiology A hundred years later, Chiropractor George Goodheart, combined the Chinese meridian system, muscle testing and science of movement, which he

called Applied Kinesiology (AK).

Credit must also go to many of his contemporaries, who went on to develop other modalities particularly in the field of Self Help. Chiropractors, Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Dentists began to realize the importance of physical and mental wellbeing through movement and massage.

Touch for Health- acupuncture without needles Goodheart wanted to continue teaching AK only to professionals licensed to diagnose and treat patients, while his colleague, Doctor John Thie wanted “kinesiology” to be available for the general public. In 1972 Dr Thie wrote the book “Touch For Health” suitable for lay-people which became a best-seller in self-help techniques and was translated into many languages .

Professional Kinesiology Practitioners in New Zealand Bruce Dewe MD introduced Touch for Health to New Zealand in the late 1970’s, and took the small seaside town of Whitianga by storm. It was often difficult to validate scientifically some of the techniques, but Dr Dewe, a highly qualified medical practitioner, went on to develop Professional Kinesiology Practitioners for professional healthcare providers around the world.

Educational Kinesiology- Brain Gym© Dr Dewe was also instrumental in bringing Educational Kinesiology to New Zealand. In 1983 a conference was organised at Parapsychology on the North Shore in Auckland. Phillip Crockford, Touch for Health instructor

from the States, was the guest speaker.

People from all walks of life turned up, teachers, education advisors, therapists, doctors, parents desperate to help their children with learning, as well as adults diagnosed with dyslexia. For many, it was life changing and everyone was given a little booklet, “EK for Kids”. This was the fore-runner to Brain Gym© now taught in schools all over the world.

Emotional Freedom TechniqueEnergy Psychology In the late 1990s Gary Craig created an even more simple self-help technique which he called Emotional Freedom (EFT), an alternative self-help treatment for physical pain and emotional distress. The technique involved tapping acupressure points and reciting affirmations. To make sure everyone had access he wrote a book and eventually put it on his website for free! Energy Psychology was available to therapists and so simple to learn for anyone willing to give it a go.

The future of Kinesiology Kinesiology is here to stay as health professionals learn the benefits of ancient arts of healing. We live in a generation that relies heavily on technology and the use of chemicals, often creating imbalances in subtle systems in the body. Whether it’s advanced techniques for the professionals or simple basic methods for those wishing to promote the self-healing for themselves and friends, Kinesiology is here to stay.

Under new names “Energy Medicine”, “Sports Medicine” and “ Vibrational Medicine” Kinesiology is recognized as a gentle yet powerful healing technique to improve health, well-being and vitality.
