Billy's set to experience the surf and snow spots at his back doorstep.

aglan pro surfer Billy Stairmand says he’s ready to “travel and search New Zealand” in the wake of the country’s Covid-19 lockdown and after the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics.

About the time he should have been packing his bags for Japan he’ll likely instead be on the road in his brand-new surf wagon – which comes courtesy of a Giltrap Skoda sponsorship – exploring both surf and snow spots he’s not had the time to check out till now.

And he says he’ll be making some video clips to put on the internet and show off his Kiwi heritage.

Despite having travelled the world competing, the former Raglan Surfing Academy student reckons New Zealand is still the most clean, green, healthy country of all and he’s going to make the most of it while foreign countries are off limits.

And “nothing’s really changed”, he told the Chronicle of the near certainty he’ll become an Olympian, even if the Games

have been delayed a year. “I’ve still got my provisional spot.”

He and Whangamata pro surfer Ella Williams both qualified late last year to represent New Zealand in Tokyo. For the kid who grew up riding Raglan’s waves it was – as Billy told the Chronicle at the time– a dream come true.

Right now he should’ve been in El Salvador competing at the ISA World Games, which is the final qualifying event for the Olympic Games.

Instead he’s been enjoying more family time during lockdown including “trying to grow veggies”, he laughs.

The 30 year old has also been training at home where he has weights, bands and an exercise bike set up in his garage. He’ll soon hit the local gym too, he says, having been unable to surf since early March and currently uncharacteristically reliant on land-based activity.

Ironically that’s nothing to do with the global pandemic and the cancellation as a consequence of all World Surf League (WSL) and International Surfing Association (ISA) events.

As it happens Billy had suffered a grade three MCL strain in his knee while attempting an aerial manoeuvre during competition in Australia, and was out of action before the lockdown even began.

So in a bizarre sense the global crisis “was almost good timing for me,” he admits. “I had to stay off my leg and do nothing for six weeks.”

However he’s been in regular online contact with his physio and could finally venture to Auckland for treatment last week with the drop to alert level 2.

Billy is philosophical about the sudden turn of events which has postponed his Olympic dream. While he was more than ready this year, physically and mentally, he now sees the delay as a chance “to prepare a bit better and get myself fit and healthy”.

And he’s still hellbent on achieving that other goal – the WSL Championship Tour – as he continues his climb up the world qualifying rankings, in which he’s currently No 34.

Dad films lockdown YouTube videos for kids

ne local dad’s lockdown has seen him in a wig, rose-tinted glasses, yellow headband, baggy purple pants, and groovy dancing while filming himself as his character, Hippy.

A photographer/videographer who worked internationally with hotels, construction and executive portraits, Nic Arnold has turned the lens on himself as the energetic, eccentric, nature-loving character Hippy. Moonbeam, the family’s pug cross, is sidekick as Hippy discovers plants, shapes, colours, numbers, and shares real-life adventures in their rural valley near Raglan.

At the end of each video Hippy discusses a virtue encouraging tamariki to think about being positive and kind.

Father of two under twos, Arnold says he was disappointed with the lack of honest, thoughtful, creative content for kids “that inspires them to celebrate both their uniqueness and the amazing natural world outside”.

Hippy is a collaboration with wife Lizzy who has a Masters in teaching English and taught English as a second language worldwide.

The penny dropped one day by the stream with their kids.

“All our two-year-old wanted to do was go inside and watch animated fire trucks and talking diggers.

“It’s addictive, doesn’t encourage them to think or embrace the natural world, and we

could see our amazing wee son turning into a TV zombie.”

Inspired by the Gandhi quote: ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’, rather than complain about it, Arnold decided to make kids’ content himself.

“Hippy would have come about regardless of lockdown – I’d already bought the wig and filmed the intro – but I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have this time.”

While self-isolating, the Arnolds talked with other parents struggling without access to parks, beaches and wild spaces.

“Whenever people visit us, they love the scenery and endless possibilities for themselves and their kids. But there are kids all over the world who never get to play in the wild and discover. We wanted to share the

paradise we call home and the magnificence of Aotearoa in a fun, educational way.”

With the first video launched April 10 and another seven on YouTube, the Arnolds release a new video weekly, 12pm Thursdays.

YouTube viewers and Facebook likes are growing daily, with subscribers as far afield as Sweden, USA, Australia and the UAE. Plans after lockdown include filming at the beach, in parks, sustainable businesses and entertaining at kids’ parties.

Reggae at the core, the album is also super varied in style, with colours of blues, rock, hip-hop and pop.

There’s something for everyone on there, and two of the tunes, including the lead single ‘Wicked Man’, has caught the ears of NZONAIR, who gave them a couple of sweet grants to get their album on the way.

They also won the Mai Fm ‘Big Break’ for their track ‘Irie’ in 2018! With videos like ‘Badman’ (a song to bring awareness to domestic violence) racking up over 150,000 views, LTA has developed a solid fanbase and with the release of this album and single, they are well on their way to sitting high in our Aotearoa festival touring and showing more of what they did at Soundsplash 2020.

Lost Tribe Aotearoa is authentically from this land. Their universal appeal will serve them on an international stage as well as their passion for spreading good messages.

This album is gritty, fun, upbeat and thought-provoking, as well as sounding amazing as it is recorded and produced at Roundhead by Scott Seabright and mastered at Kog by Chris Chetland.

Raglan Community Charitable Trust to fund flu jabs for community services card holders

aglan Community Charitable Trust Chairman, Peter Storey says in the past 12 months, the Trust has provided around $78,000 to Raglan organisations to support their incredible community work.

“Along with our annual grants to the community Christmas lunch, New Year’s fireworks and Christmas in the Park, we’ve funded a vehicle for PRIME and additional community defibrillators, given grants for training for PRIME practitioners and first aiders and made grants to Raglan Fire and Emergency and Raglan Volunteer Coastguard for vital equipment.”

Peter says the Trust now wants to offer 200 free flu vaccinations to Community Services Card holders and their dependents and to children who live with (or are in regular contact with) someone aged 65+ years.

“Raglan Medical will administer the vaccinations, so please give them a call on 825-0114 to check if you qualify for a free flu jab. Meanwhile, play it safe this flu season and remember to wash your hands with soap, cough and sneeze into your elbow and stay home if you feel unwell.”

Boat ramps: Boat ramps will be open from Saturday 16 May, except for ones on the Waikato River. These will be open once the rahui on the river is lifted.

Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion says people in the Waikato district have done a fantastic job during lockdown and because of this hard work, community facilities can now begin to re-open.

But he says Council’s priority is still the health and safety of the community and staff.

“When we do open, we’ll have measures in place to keep everyone safe. Under Alert Level 2 at council facilities, physical distancing will still apply. We ask everyone to keep a 2-metre distance from people you don't know,” he says.

“The same hygiene measures we’ve followed during lockdown should continue to be followed. This includes regularly washing your hands and coughing or sneezing into your elbow. And please don’t visit a council facility if you’re feeling unwell.”

Some community facilities will re-open at a reduced capacity under Alert Level 2, and Government guidance will be followed as required regarding maximum visitor numbers, and contact tracing measures.

Council offices Offices in Ngaruawahia and Tuakau will open from Tuesday 19 May. Opening hours will be Monday to Thursday 8am-5pm, Fridays 9am-5pm at Ngaruawahia, with 830. am – 5pm Monday to Friday at Tuakau. There will initially be some limitations to services

Waikato district Mayor Allan Sanson is pleased to see most of council’s facilities back up and running after weeks of being closed.

“During COVID-19 lockdown our community and our country’s health came first. Our facilities are a very important part of what makes the district such wonderful place to live and I am so happy to see them open again. We do need to be careful though.

“We’ve been given a bit more freedom, but we need to make space, wash our hands and stay away if we’re not feeling well. Together as a community we can continue to keep COVID-19 at bay.”

Huntly Aquatic Centre Details about the opening date of The Huntly Aquatic Centre will be available as soon as possible. But there’ll be a number of restrictions based on Government Alert Level 2 guidance on gatherings hygiene, contact tracing and physical distancing.

Community/town halls Our hall committees are preparing to have our halls open as soon as possible, while ensuring that Government guidance on gatherings, hygiene, physical distancing and contact tracing are followed. Transfer stations/resource recovery centre Huntly Transfer Station will re-open on Thursday 14 May. Te Kauwhata Transfer Station will re-open on Sunday 17 May. Normal operating hours at both sites will resume. Both sites will only be accepting rubbish and greenwaste. At this stage no recycling will be accepted and there will be no onsite sorting from public loads – it’ll all be classed as rubbish. There will also be contactless payment at both sites – no cash.

Details about when Xtreme Zero Waste Resource Recovery Centre will be open to the public will be available as soon as possible.

She had belonged to writers groups in Auckland and Cambridge and was a ghostwriter for the famous New Zealand horsewoman Freda White and sometimes wrote for the Raglan Chronicle. A love of horses was reflected in the stories she shared and her eccentric sense of humour was evident in everything she wrote.

The original group was held at the old school and then moved to the Community House and Pam Bovril took over running the group keeping the ideas flowing under the guidance of Patsy. Gradually the members moved on and had other commitments (many were also artists and needed to fulfill other creative talents). There were just two of us at the end a wonderful Raglan story writer Dot, an original member, and me, a relative newcomer. Thanks

to Patsy’s tenacity and hilarious stories, many will treasure the wonderful happy memories we shared with the Raglan Writers Group. No doubt she will still be inspiring would-be writers in her Heavenly Stable in the Sky. Patsy Zohs passed away a couple of days before her eighty-fifth birthday last month.

Condolences to her family she was a great lady and brought much pleasure to many people here in Raglan.

Already there are many stories emerging from our experiences during lockdown so the over 70s will have plenty to share in the coming weeks as we (hopefully) move towards level one.

Meanwhile, hang in there as we are still in level two and need to be cautious as we extend our bubbles and go shopping for the first time in eight weeks. Keep to safe distancing and hand washing. Now

Raglan Sailing Club Regatta March 2020

T

he weekend of March 14 and 15 saw the second annual Regatta run by the Raglan Sailing Club.

What a great weekend! The weather played fair and we had a good lot of sailors taking part from our own Raglan Club, and others from Hamilton and Lake Ngaroto Yacht Clubs. On Sunday there were 28 yachts on the harbour – a fantastic sight.

Racing went well and everyone had a good run with many different types of yachts competing. There was food and a prize giving after the racing so sailors, families, friends, and volunteers were all well catered for.
