Dreaming of a weed free Whaingaroa

dream of a weed-free Whaingaroa is the motivation behind the newly formed Greenslade Road Weedbusters.

Started by Leanne Steel, Michaela Latimer and Reagan Robinson with help from Moira Cursey, the group held their inaugural weedbusting day on Saturday, June 13.

QEII National Trust Waikato representative Robbie Bennett dug in with the volunteers and shared some valuable insights.

Bennett has been involved in many restoration projects over the years including his Ngaruawahia lifestyle block which includes several hectares of established and regenerating native bush. “Our first focus will be the Greenslade Road beach access. It was crazy during lockdown with so many people out walking and we wanted to do something visible so other people would be encouraged to start their own weedbusting groups,� Leanne said.

The group will be battling privet, woolly nightshade, wild ginger, wandering Willy, climbing asparagus and other invasive plants which have a harmful impact on the wider natural environment. “I saw my first kereru recently fly over my back garden during lockdown.

Getting rid of the pest plants and planting natives will encourage our native birds back,� Leanne said.

The group has been given a nice little kickstart by Waikato District Council Raglan reserves team leader Noel Barber with a donation of 200 native plants from the Karioi Nursery. “It’s so important to be able to get planting once the weeds have been cleared and now is the planting season,� she aid.

The group is also keen to tackle Waikato Regional Council significant natural areas in their patch that are less accessible to the public but with huge biodiversity value.

Eliminating pest plants and revitalising these areas helps protect habitats that support threatened species.

Greenslade Road Weedbusters hope the work they do as a collective will encourage other groups to spring into action. “I know many people would love to do this in their part of Raglan but they are intimidated by it – it’s a big job on your own,’ Leanne said.

Funding is available for Weedbuster groups and Leanne has negotiated with Timebank Raglan for volunteers to get Timebank hours for their weeding time.

Three properties were snapped up over the weekend as post-COVID real estate auctions resumed.

aglan’s first postCovid house auctions have gone off with a bang – of the hammer.

Three properties were snapped up last weekend as multiple bidders, some of whom travelled from auction to auction, sought a slice of Raglan real estate in what one agent described as a “very buoyant” market.

LJ Hooker said two underbidders who missed out on a Norrie Ave property that fetched $1 million-plus then went on to buy Ray Whitelisted homes in Johnson Drive and Pokohui Ave. Ray White Raglan agent and auctioneer Julie Hanna confirmed one of the latter properties sold under the hammer and the other by post-auction negotiation. Both attracted multiple bidders and sold at what she described as good price levels.

“The vendors were ecstatic,” she said.

Ray White Raglan had been “extremely busy” since the easing of the nationwide lockdown, she added. “There have been lots of purchases.”

Julie – who at the height of the lockdown busied herself delivering supermarket groceries to households about town – reckoned her feet had hardly stopped running since the property market’s return to near normality. “What a buzz!” she added.

LJ Hooker’s Michelle O’Byrne – co-agent with her husband Stephen for the Norrie Ave property that sold at auction last Saturday – also said she’d hardly stopped postCovid, and that “everyone’s still buying”.

She said five people had made offers – more commonly it might have been two – when LJ Hooker’s first post-Covid deadline sale, of a Te Mata lifestyle block, closed off a week ago.

Other deadline sales – in Government Rd and Rose St

for instance – had been brought forward because of multiple offers, she said. “It’s a very positive market.”

LJ Hooker principal Greig Metcalfe said people had twoand-a-half months of catching up to do, which was making the market “very active” and was in turn encouraging for the vendors.

If people were thinking of selling they shouldn’t wait for spring, he advised, bearing in mind the lower interest rates at the moment too. “Now’s the time.”

That view was backed up

by Michelle O’Byrne, who felt there could be a dip in real estate activity in three to six months once wage subsidies had ended and there was a possibility of more job losses.

Meanwhile Richard Thomson of PGG Wrightson Real Estate – whose work is mostly Raglan-based – described the current level of interest in local listings as exceptional, with a greater

flurry of activity the last couple of weekends than was usual at this time of year.

“It’s probably the busiest we’ve ever been.”

While acknowledging interest was also good in other areas, he said some of the 170 PGG Wrightson agents nationwide were struggling in the current climate.

Raglan was the place to which people wanted to come and live, Richard believed, because it was the one Waikato town that afforded a beach lifestyle within easy reach of a city.

He suspected people had also had time over the lockdown to evaluate their priorities. “They’re jealous of what we have here.”

Richard added a lot of the recent interest was in lifestyle properties, with people looking now at less confined living where they could grow vegetables and suchlike.

A fond so long to ‘Sheryl from Raglan’ Sheryl Anne Maree Hart 27 January 1955 – 19 March 2020

I

’m Sheryl from Raglan.”

–It was a statement made with such confidence that if you did not know her, then it was about time you did.

I first met Sheryl at a New Zealand Recreational Fishing Council meeting in the late 1980s.

Here was this feisty young woman ‘from Raglan’ standing up and telling the old guard of recreational delegates the error of their ways.

From that day forward we developed a mutual respect and understanding, and a friendship that would endure some very challenging times to this day.

Sheryl was the first born of Raymond and Colleen Furness, born January 27, 1955 at Snodgrass Rd, Te Puna, Tauranga.

Her parents were sharemilkers.

Sheryl recalled her time in Maungatautari, when they were walking the first herd of cows across the lake Karapiro dam, on the proviso that they cleaned up all the shit. At just seven years old she was not overly impressed with her task of cleaning up the shit.

She would be joined by two younger brothers, Peter and Graham. She recalled the time they were being towed on a trailer behind the tractor on the side of the Maungatautari Mountain when

the trailer became dislodged and started beating the tractor down the hill! With the three siblings aboard, it was about to go over a big cliff!

She said all she could remember was her dad yelling, ‘Jump!’

“We jumped as the trailer plummeted over the bloody bank and down the bloody cliff, from which we would not have survived,” said Sheryl. “Shit that was close, but yeah.”

So she didn’t spend her childhood wrapped in bubble wrap that’s for sure.

Sheryl, Peter, and Graham were quite the rebels and in her story of life there were many tales of what they got up to as children, including, ‘Dynamite’, setting fire to a cow shed (accidentally); stealing potatoes and heading out on the farm to cook chips over a fire they lit on the peat.

“We would all sit down at the back of the farm, gorging ourselves stupid on homemade potato chips and Te Hoe store doughnuts. Yeah it was fun,” she said.

When Sheryl was 15, she met John – at stock cars at Forest lake, Hamilton. This became a place of significance for her. John (being a bit of a petrol head) raced stock cars for a season – which ended up being the very last year stock cars raced there.

John proposed to Sheryl because he got wind of her moving to the South Island to start her ‘apple’ picking career.

“Anyway, I was in the bath at home and he asked me to marry him through the bathroom door.

That was quite funny,” she said. “I didn’t know whether to tell him to wait until I got out of the bath, or say yes through the door. I think I might have said yes through the door,” she said.

John and Sheryl got married on April 19, 1975 in the Orini Hall. It was a big day, and there didn’t seem to be a limit to how many people could come.

“We got married in April and I got pregnant in January – beforehand - hahaha. But anyway, we just kept on with the plan and on the day all was right in the world,” said Sheryl.

Sheryl’s and John’s family was complete when their kids Richard and Nicole were born.

They shifted to Hamilton in 1978 and purchased a bit of land in Pukete, and built their first home.

This was where Sheryl developed a passion for being involved with committees. She joined the Plunket, kindergarten, and school committees to meet new people – and soon realised it was the same people on each one!

John and Sheryl decided it was time get into business. They found a great little garage in Raglan. They weren’t sure whether they would like Raglan. They put their house on the market, and it sold rather quickly – which left them in the predicament of being homeless until the settlement for the Raglan property went through. They camped in a caravan before moving to Raglan in October 1983.

“Here was this feisty young woman ‘from Raglan’ standing up and telling the old guard of recreational delegates the error of their ways.”

This started the beginning of the rest of her life. She described it as living in heaven.

Sheryl absolutely loved fishing.

They brought a boat and their life on the water out west began. Sheryl, John and her son Richard all shared a huge passion for fishing. This led Sheryl to be involved with the Manu Bay Fishing and Boating Club, Waikato Saltwater Sports Fishing Club and the Raglan Sport Fishing Club as well as being the local marine radio operator and weighmaster. John joined the local Volunteer Fire Brigade, they were both kept active on the wide range of committees and are past presidents, but for the vast majority of time Sheryl was in her element as Secretary/Treasurer and ‘General Workaholic’.

Like she said when we first met, “I’m Sheryl from Raglan”.

She was a remarkable woman and her advocacy for better fisheries management was always strong and passionate. She would go on to join the executive of the NZRFC and was unforgiving in her representation of Raglan and the west coast fisheries.

She was an environmentalist in the true and pragmatic form, the Maui dolphins were her dolphins and one could be forgiven for thinking she knew every last surviving dolphin by name.

Sheryl took on the role of Secretary when the late Max Hetherington passed away while in still in office. I have some very fond memories of her in full flight; reading the riot act to all and sundry in officialdom as the occasion demanded.

If such things possibly do happen I am sure she will have found Max by now, and already has him in a corner bending his ear.

When Sheryl found a lump, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After 12 weeks of Chemo and 6 weeks of radiation, she had beaten it. While she took time out for travel, she remained a feared and staunch advocate for Raglan in both fisheries, seabed mining and her treasured dolphins.

Her next battle was going to be her toughest.

Sheryl was diagnosed with a trifecta of cancer in July 2018. This was not going to be a fight that she would win, but she sure did not let it stop her living her best life to the very end.

Yes, Sheryl was a do-gooder, not in the sense of meddling or seeking the lime-light, but in the true sense of wanting to make a difference.

She was passionate about Raglan and one tribute described her as “…speaking from the heart, and whether you agreed with her or not, you had to admire her.”

Sheryl also had a great sense of fun and humour, something she never lost, even as her life was slowly being taken away from her. ‘he wahine kaha takoto rangimarie’ RIP Sheryl.

he 2020 football season got off to a very uncertain and disrupted start due to the Covid19 pandemic which brought the country to halt, and to be honest, 8 weeks ago, we doubted whether we would be having a football season at all.

Our biggest challenge has been not knowing what the season would look like with the changing requirements that were placed on us in order to resume playing, such as contact tracing, social distancing, hygiene and sanitising. Having to cancel our Team Briefing day due to Covid, really highlighted how critical that day is for us so that when teams are

named they have a chance to meet and greet, exchange contacts, find coaches and managers and the committee can answer any questions face to face.

The shortened season started last Saturday, and it was nice to finally see the fields at Papahua full of kids competing in their first game.

At this stage we will have our final game on August 29, as per original schedule, with the possibility of WaiBop extending the season by a few games beyond that date if possible.

This year we have had a big number of new players join our First Kicks program (5th and 6th grade) which is based around having fun and

participation while learning basic skills and hopefully keeps them coming back to the sport in years to come.

215 kids spread over 25 teams have registered with the Club and with a further 2 teams playing for Raglan Area School, we will be assured that Papahua will be full of kids enjoying sport over these winter months.

We would like to thank all of our football families for your patience and support over what has been a difficult and challenging time and we wish every player an enjoyable and successful season ahead.

W

e’re very excited to be finally getting a season at Raglan Junior Rugby Club.

With Rugby being a contact sport it was uncertain whether the season could continue under the Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.

But on June 2, at 4pm, there were 100 + very excited RJRC kids running around playing our favourite sport.

Thankfully we only had to deal with one week of contact tracing and the rest of the Covid-19 protocols, the club community was great in banding together and making this simple though.

Our season will officially kick off on Saturday 25th July and run for 10 consecutive weeks. We are trying to also arrange some curtain raisers for

the senior rugby which we will let the community know about.

All and all we can’t wait for the season to officially kick off and wear our club colours with pride.

It is with regret that we wish to inform you that Raglan Netball Club Inc. will not be participating in our usual competition in Hamilton this year. It was not a decision that we made lightly in the face of the many

Covid-19 restrictions. As a committee we did not feel we were equipped enough to proceed with the season, keeping the safety of all club members as paramount.

With that being said, we are looking to the future and what netball we are able to provide our community, by keeping it local! We are looking at our usual Twilight season in term 4, which will be held on Thursday evenings. We are hoping to cater for school children

and adults. We also want to hold a family fun day in term 3. This day will include netball, fun and food for the whole family! When we have a date we will let the community know!

Raglan Community Board Update A monthly column that covers key issues and happenings from the monthly Raglan Community Board meetings.

The Raglan Community Board will be hosting our first Level One face-to-face meeting next week on Tuesday, June 23, at the Raglan Town Hall supper room, commencing at 1.30pm with our public forum, followed by our official meeting at 2pm.

Our guest speaker is Dallas Butler, General Manager of Xtreme Zero Waste, he will be updating us on how Summer in Raglan went and also operations during lock down. We look forward to seeing you again, everyone is welcome.

Update on Raglan iSite Changes are coming to the Raglan iSite with its closure on June 30. Over the last few months the Raglan Community Board has facilitated a number of meetings with community organisations around the future of this space and an information centre for Raglan.

The organisations involved are: • Raglan Museum Committee • Raglan Business Chamber • Raglan Naturally • Raglan Community Board • Ngati Mahanga - Taruke Thomson • Whaingaroa Raglan Destination Management Organisation (DMO)

• Lisa Thomson, Raglan Ward Councillor • Waikato District Council We all agree there is an opportunity to create a new information centre model for our community – which continues to welcome visitors but which also supports community members and businesses.

A team of people from these organisations has formed to support what could be in place of the current iSite to a more specific Raglan information hub.

Over the next couple of months the front desk will be covered by these organisations as we work collaboratively toward a permanent solution for management and funding.

The key now is to support the Museum and to work collaboratively to explore a community-led model and management structure – to make this really our own. We will keep you updated. Watch this space!

Raglan Wharf Project Update Waikato District Council and our community were successful in securing $2.5M through the Provincial Growth Fund for improvements to the Raglan Wharf.

This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together and with Waikato District Council

to enhance this space and create something that will be of benefit to all users of the wharf area.

The project consists of six stages, which are: • Structural improvements to future proof the wharf • Safety improvements to protect general public and business • Provide additional berthing for boats using the wharf • Walkway extension on the west side of the wharf and possible improvement on east side.

• Strategic plan for the Whaingaroa Harbour infrastructure • Identified solutions to resolve parking and access associated with the wharf and immediate business area A meeting was held on June 3, with wharf stakeholders: • Raglan Community Board • Ngati Mahanga/Hourua • Tainui o Tainui • Wharf related Businesses, including retail/food, fishing charters and property owners (Rob Galloway and Marie de Jong, Tony Sly, Rick Youmans, Mark Mathers, Stephen Sandwell, Helen Rowling, Charlie Young, Stuart MacFarlane, Craig Bridgeman, Darron Thornton, Murray Monds, Noel Bamber)

• Commercial fishermen (Mark Mathers, Gavin McKenzie) • Raglan Sports Fishing Club (Ken Barry) • Raglan Coastguard (Wally Hawken) • Waikato Regional Council Harbour Master (Toby Kemp) • Raglan Business Chamber (Charlie Young) From this meeting working groups were formed to be part of one or more of the six working groups.

We are establishing an oversight group which is likely to be made up of RCB Members (Dennis Amoore and Chris Rayner), Waikato District Council staff and local hapū.

The Waikato District Blueprint includes initiatives, projects and work that will help Council deliver the vision of creating liveable, thriving and connected communities. It was adopted by Waikato District Council in June 2019.

Council wants to keep working with our community to identify which work Council should be leading, what initiatives are better suited for the community to lead and which ones need a mixture of both.

Over the next few weeks the Raglan Community Board and Raglan Naturally will work together to look at how the aspirations and projects in Raglan Naturally 2020, our community plan, will sit alongside and feed into the Raglan Blueprint.

The WEC Operations Manager will provide leadership to our team of people and volunteers, overseeing the day to day operations of the centre, its projects and will take responsibility for the health, safety and wellbeing of the team. You’ll be based in our Environment Centre in Whāingaroa. This is a currently a part-time position of 24 hours per week (the salary will be pro rata).

About us Our vision is that Whāingaroa flourishes with natural biodiversity and a community connected to the environment.

WEC is a Charitable Incorporated Society and is an information, resource and action hub, supporting environmental education and sustainability. WEC is based in Whāingaroa, successfully operating since 2000 to engage and empower people to take action and leading projects like Plastic Bag Free Raglan, Crop Swap, Community Gardens, Maui Dolphin Conservation and Time Bank and many others.
