If someone had told me this 10 months ago, I probably would’ve pissed my pants in disbelief. I feel beyond blessed about the past 18 months.

How has your music been influenced?

In terms of lyrics, I’m influenced by my own personal experiences that I think are also relatable for other people. I’m mainly influenced by South American, African, Pacific and Pop sounds. I’m always trying to listen to a wide range of genres and implement different sounds into my own music to keep things fresh.

elebrating Mahuru Māori, Muroki has released his hit song Wavy in te reo Māori as part of the industry wide Waiata Anthems initiative available on all streaming platforms.

This September, Waiata Anthems Week will come to life with the release of a number of new recordings in te reo Māori and a digital marketing campaign to celebrate the growing movement.

An industry-wide initiative, Waiata Anthems Week will be a celebration of the best new waiata and a chance to honour the champions and pioneers of te reo Māori who paved the way for future generations, supporting the emergence of a truly bilingual musical landscape.

On Friday 3rd September, more than a dozen new recordings of songs from some of the most celebrated musicians of Aotearoa – both established and emerging – was released.

hey say it takes a family to raise a child, but for one local venture it’s more a case of an extended family to create a winning business.

Downtown eatery ULO’s Kitchen has taken out the people’s choice category of the annual Waikato Hospitality Awards, which acknowledge the region’s most outstanding restaurants and cafes.

And as the photograph of the ULO’s team at the awards ceremony at Wintec shows, it’s a real family affair.

The eldest daughter in the Shirai family, Kyoko, told the Chronicle they all have different kinds of talent to call on – from artwork to cooking to music – and that they support one another in the running of their popular Wallis St eatery.

“It’s the perfect combination,” she says.

Sister Eriko is the chef while brother Takahiro is chef-cum-bartender, specialising in cocktails.

Dad Yoshi makes sushi in the kitchen, while Mum Yuko is responsible for the overall management of ULO’s.

Then there’s Yui Tsukahara and Ryu Taysumasa Aiura – both extended family

members from Japan – who also work behind the scene as chefs, while Kyoko’s partner Cian O’Donnell is what she describes as “our own DJ”.

Cian and Kyoko also run the ULO shop a stone’s throw away on the corner of Bow and Wi Neera St, where the couple focus on his mix of CDs/records and her artwork.

It was Kyoko who designed the cafe’s logo, having drawn the flower years before, naming it ULO which she mistakenly thought meant ‘shine’ in Māori. She later discovered there was no such word in the Māori language but held onto the name anyway because “I want this place to shine like a star … and we love watching customers shine”.

About a month ago Cian posted on Raglan Notice Board that ULO’s Kitchen had been nominated for the people’s choice award and that online votes would help family members with their long-term application for permanent residency.

Raglan community responded in big numbers to seal their win.

The enterprising Shirai family found their way to town four years ago through the love of surfing shared by father and

son, Yoshi and Takahiro. They’d all fled Japan after the 2011 tsunami in which their livelihoods were lost, and first settled in Auckland.

Although Yoshi was a dentist back in his homeland, the only option open to them to support their visa applications was that of cheffing.

“So we went to cooking school,” says the matter-of-fact Kyoko. And that, as it has turned out, was their recipe for success.

ULO’s also got a rave review in the latest Air New Zealand inflight magazine, Kia Ora, which featured ‘A weekend in Raglan’.

Another local business – Mushrooms by the Sea – figured twice in the same hospitality awards, which were dished out just before lockdown. The winner of the “outstanding chef” category, Mat McLean of Palate Restaurant, acknowledged his use of Raglan-grown mushrooms in his seasonally inspired menus, while Gothenburg Restaurant won the Matariki dish challenge people’s choice award with an entry featuring oyster mushrooms from the same Raglan growers.

Eateries glad to be of full table service again

ocal cafes were welcoming back diners this week, confident they could offer a

“professional” service after Raglan along with most of the country moved down an alert level from midnight Tuesday.

However, as the co-owner of one downtown eatery noted, it wasn’t quite back to business as usual under the new ‘Delta Level 2’ and sit-down customers would notice “a few changes” from before the latest Covid-19 outbreak struck.

Lisa James, of Orca Eatery & Bar, said that besides adhering again to the three S’s – ensuring people were seated, separated and had a single server – front of house staff would now wear masks at all times when serving “and customers should as well unless eating or drinking”.

All customers would be required to scan the Covid Tracer app or sign in, she added, and only up to 50 could dine or relax over a coffee at any one time.

Lisa said Orca – no doubt like other cafes about town – was inundated with direct bookings immediately following Tuesday afternoon’s announcement of an alert level shift, and was asking people now to reserve tables online.

“It’s so great to have so much community support,” she enthused.

The Shack’s Justin Thomson could also hardly wait to re-open the doors on Wednesday morning and remained undaunted by “a few new rules” such as the mandatory masks and reduced seating to allow appropriate spacing.

He predicted the “most challenging” rule for customers would be the need to scan or sign in.

“We’ll be running a small menu to begin with before things build up for the weekend,” Justin explained. Getting supplies through after the lockdown hiatus seemed to be proving a slight hitch initially.

When the Chronicle phoned on Monday evening The Wharf Kitchen & Bar was also gearing up to return to something approaching

normal trading hours – “morning, noon and night” – as were ULO’s and Rock-it Kitchens, La La Land and Wyld which have been busy with contactless takeaways at alert level 3.

Local support from a “good” community has kept them going, say eatery owners, who feel confident they can make it through the Delta Covid outbreak unscathed. Despite turnover having been down during level 3, both La La Land’s Monika Suchecka and Wyld’s Paul Gittings were upbeat at the backing shown by the community.

“People know how to support us,” said Monika. “They pay more, buy more, it’s heartwarming.”

She cited the case of one customer who treated the staff of Raglan Medical $80 worth of goodies from her range to thank them for their hard work.

Rock-it’s Cherie Nathan was also grateful for “awesome support” from the community at level 3, during which they offered a smaller kitchen menu from the old barn’s front door.

Speaking on behalf of the two families which took over the business not much more than three months ago, she made clear they were unfazed by level 2’s reduced seating rules.

With a generous deck, a large grassy area for well-spaced seating and a new spring menu ready to go “we’re pretty confident we can survive”, Cherie said.

The Chronicle couldn’t immediately contact some of the other cafes around town for comment.

Raglan Business Chamber Level 2 Guidance • The Raglan Business Chamber welcomes the move to Level 2 with open arms as businesses across Raglan (and New Zealand) have really felt the pinch this time. Although the new Level 2 restrictions are by no means an open invitation to relive how things were just 4 weeks ago, it is a move in the right direction, allowing businesses to open and regain some level of normality.

• We know some businesses found the Level 3 restrictions too incumbent and simply “not worth it” so their doors remained closed. I’m sure we can speak on behalf of all Raglan Businesses that it is great to see the move to Level 2 and the removal of regional travel restrictions which will allow visitors discretionary spending to boost our local economy.

• We have been impressed by the 'shop local’ message that has been circulating even more this time around. It's great the community understands the struggles local businesses go through during lockdown not only from a financial perspective but from a mental perspective. The Government's financial support packages 'assist' with some of the running costs of a business but is by no means a sufficient contribution to alleviate the financial burdens imposed on businesses while they remain legally obliged to pay their staff, their rent and other overheads.

• Going forward, life will look a little different for the coming months as Delta Level 2 has been predicated to be around until Christmas. All we can ask and hope for is visitors return to Raglan and the community continue to support the local businesses. Stay safe and wear a mask!

hanks to all of you who took the time to give feedback on the Parklets and road marking changes in Raglan town centre. We appreciate your patience as the finishing touches were made to the Parklets. Additional signage will be installed in support of the project.

We received 74 responses to the survey and from those 78% like the road marking, 70% like the Parklets and 69% were in support of the project trial continuing. We appreciated the detail of your feedback and have noted

what you love, elements that are working well for you, what you were not so keen on, and things to keep a note of. The project team is also continually observing the changes and the way that people are interacting in these spaces. It takes a while to get used to something new, especially in the centre of our town and we will certainly learn a lot as the weather warms up and more people are out and about.

The trial period for the parklets will continue to run through until December 2021. We will check in with you again late

November and will then evaluate the success of the project. There may be some small changes and improvements made then if we need them. If the feedback is positive the trial will be extended through to March 2022.

Entries now open for this year's Surfside Church services during Whāingaroa Talent Factory lockdown

Local Music This year Whāingaroa Talent Factory has been reshaped to better fit the kaupapa of encouraging youth participation in music performance and creation. We want to give the opportunity for youth to experience all aspects of a live performance and to be able to participate in the Mentoring Sessions where they will receive valuable feedback from music industry professionals.

Also, a musician’s fee from the $1500 cash available will also be paid to those participating in the mentoring session and live performance.

The exact date of the Whāingaroa Talent Factory Show will be announced in the coming weeks along with the identities of the musicians who will be our mentors for 2021.

nce again our football season has been majorly affected by Covid. In 2020 it was the start of the season which was disrupted by the pandemic, this year it has been the end of the season which has come to an abrupt halt causing teams to miss out on their final 3 games.

Even though it has been a really disappointing way to finish, we are so grateful to have had a successful season and it’s been an absolute pleasure to be at Papahua on any given Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning and seeing our youth enjoying their sport with their friends and parents supporting their kids, and using Saturday mornings as an opportunity to socialise amongst other football

families. This highlights the importance of any sporting group within a small community like Whāingaroa.

We are hoping to be able to organise one last friendly game for all our teams against other Raglan teams of similar grade, just to give teams a chance to get together one last time, have a friendly match and have a team celebration/prizegiving to give closure to the season.

Most of all we want to thank our coaches and managers for the time and energy you give to your team; all the kids and parents appreciate what you do. Likewise all parents and supporters for helping out and getting behind the team and club.

We wish everyone a great summer and hope to see all our members back next year, for what we hope will be an uninterrupted season.

New Raglan Arts Guide and web site signal countdown to RAW FROM RAGLAN ARTS WEEKEND

A

beautiful new Raglan Arts Guide, as well as a soon-tobe-launched web site, signal that the Raglan Arts Weekend in late October is drawing closer for fans and artists alike. Visitors and art aficionados will soon be able to use these resources to plan their selfguided trails to visit Raglan’s best art talent in their own creative spaces.

The new brochure and web site, which primarily house details of participating RAW artists and the studio maps, are also home to the township’s flagship design stores and four new galleries.

The idea is that the Raglan Arts Guide will be a year-round resource for ‘all things art’ in Raglan. In time, the RAW organisers hope to include more of the creative outlets and initiatives that make Raglan the artistic and inspiring place that it is.

“Imagine a brochure that can also share info on public artworks and street murals, explain the heritage of the Old School Arts Centre or provide

info on relevant art tours, exhibitions and events,” says Nicky Brzeska.

“We obviously need to work within our budget constraints as every page costs money – so this may take some time - but we now have the format and the potential to easily expand as other businesses or initiatives wish to be involved.”

RAW is now in its 12th year. This year’s event has 42 artists, including 13 new artists to RAW. Some of the old favourites - such as Jean Carbon and her beautiful silk installations - are back. Some explore new techniques, such as Tessa Skerman who ‘paints, slices and recreates’ her paintings. Other new RAW artists include AcidMince, Stuart Shepherd, Margaret Feeney, Dyana Wells, Mary Spacapan, Rodrigo Hill, Catherine Knox, Ross Thornton-Jones, Sara Guix, Simon Blanchett and Tracie Heasman.

Last RAW was postponed to Labour Weekend from Easter because of lockdown, and the event was incredibly well attended by thousands of visitors from all over New Zealand, keen to snap up artworks and get out and about.

Locals can pick up a brochure from a number of shops and cafes within Raglan, the iHub or from the Old School. If individuals are keen to have brochures for their accommodation spots,

please visit the Old School to collect some from the office.

Anyone interested to contribute content or advertise in and be a part of next year’s Raglan Arts Guide or web site should contact Nicky at the Old School.

The Raglan Arts Guide was designed by local graphic design agency, Mafia Designs, and the web site was built by another local, Simone Lourens. A detail of Mary Spacapan’s artwork, “Commissioned. We are.” has been used across the marketing material.

All the songs in this program were written during the fifteen years that Chris was resident in Raglan. The songs in the program include many songs of family life and Community like Sunday Lunch, This Little Destination by the Ocean and Little Ballerina. Little Ballerina was written for Chris’ daughter and has been recorded in a cover version by Willard Ribeiro, a singer from Santa Catarina in Brazil. Other humorous songs written to amuse Chris’ daughter are I Want to Grow a Goatee Beard and Silly Dilly Wooga (a song about the cat). Other selections include The Arrow and the Song, a setting of the poem

by H.W. Longfellow that first appeared on Chris’ album Time Flies(2001) which was recorded in his house in Raglan West, and his well-known blues/song The Road to Raglan, from the album of the same name which was released by Ode Records in 1990. Faraway Drum (a reminiscence of Olde England) will feature a guest vocal appearance from old friend Penni Ha’penny on the night of the concert, October 1st. Chris is currently performing every Friday morning at the Lost Boys Cafe in Hamilton.

The Department of Conservation advises that herbicide use on public lands may be carried out by DOC staff and/or contractors over the next 12 months for the control of Regional Pest Management Plan pest plants. The control of pest plants on Public Conservation Land will be carried out using targeted herbicides for individual species, sanctioned under the Resource Consent 124871.

All herbicide use will be carried out according to the standard NZS8409:2004 by qualified applicators. Pest plants that may be controlled include, but are not limited to, Yellow Flag Iris, Alligator Weed, Spartina and Golden Dodder.
