Planning is an issue that causes the average person’s eyes to glaze over with disinterest but there are those who care about our town and see a disconnect between life sapping rates and the results on the ground, especially when a number of options need to be considered to accommodate a particular need or community aspiration.

Raglan Naturally is a Community Plan initiated in 1999 to bypass the inability of the Raglan Community Board to plan for Raglan’s future.

There was a belief by some Community Board members at the time that it was pointless requesting anything from Council because Council will never support it, a self fulfilling prophesy.

One key thing I ensured when setting up the Community Plan process was to publicly advertise for nominations for people to be on the working group.

An intentionally diverse group was selected from those nominated to have a balanced representation of the community.

Mana Whenua representation, two environmentally focused, a couple more conservative, and a cross section of community leaders or those known for their common sense. Community Board members were allowed on the working group as of right. People who win awards or are given Damehoods or Knighthoods often state it was the team around them.

A failure by the Community Board to plan for town parking was a key reason the plan was initiated. Five years ago a survey of the community was undertaken on prioritising the top 5 projects for Raglan. The respondent’s shortlist included; town parking, footpaths, a footpath from Whale Bay to Manu Bay, (land sensitivity

(s.w.o.t. or pros and cons) Analysis is easily done on a whiteboard (four whiteboards even) in a town hall with interested public invited to contribute and the analysis published in the Chronicle to inform and invite identification of any issue overlooked. An informed community making and adopting informed choices. The analysis can identify a number of initiatives and community bottom lines.

Imposition is tyranny. The Community Plan was always to be an evolution of democracy.

Champagne moment as one-time Raglan lad makes Rugby World Cup

Bridge last Wednesday after the strapping prop – along with his close-knit family – learned he’d made the All Blacks squad which heads to Japan shortly for the Rugby World Cup. “We didn’t know if it was going to be a celebration or commiseration,” Angus’s Auckland-based mum Wendy McGee – who lived for eight years in Raglan with her two sons – told the Chronicle.

But unbeknown to Angus, his wife Kristyn had two bottles of bubbly chilling in the fridge.

There was an agonising wait to hear the good news as the squad list of surnames rolled up the screen in alphabetical order.

But once Angus and family learned

he’d made the grade the champagne was quickly retrieved, corks were popped and celebrations began.

Angus actually went very quiet, says Wendy, while she herself burst into tears.

Angus’ selection was “such a relief”, she adds. Why the nerves? “Because it’s your child, and you’ve got to manage the (potential) disappointment.”

Never mind that this one-time Raglan Area School student is all grown up now, recently married and with a son of his own.

Wendy says Angus was always happiest playing rugby. At five years old and often teased for being “twice the size of everyone else”, her second son was delighted to be accepted as a valuable team member at his first muster in Auckland.

Those early rugby years included a season playing for Raglan when the family moved here. “He had real enthusiasm because it was fun,” says Wendy. “It was country kids who all got on well and noone took it too seriously.”

But then Angus was accepted as a boarder back in Auckland at Dilworth School, where rugby reigns supreme and where it was predicted he could have a “big future”.

After his final year Angus won a Dilworth scholarship to go to Royal School Dungannon in Ireland, working as a tutor as part of a long-standing exchange programme between the two schools.

And on his return to New Zealand his rugby career blossomed. He became a Baby Black, playing for the national under20s in Argentina (2010) and then Italy (2011) where Wendy says he was part of a so-called New Zealand “dream team”.

In the same period he had his first taste of Super Rugby, as a member of the Blues training group in 2011 and of the full Blues squad from 2012.

After three years with the Blues, Angus crossed the ditch on a two-year contract with the Warratahs but by last year was back in New Zealand playing for the Chiefs. He was then called into the All Blacks as injury cover and made his international debut for New Zealand soon after.

Wendy says departing Chiefs coach Colin Cooper was the person who essentially “reached out” to Angus, realised he was a larger-than-life character and had confidence in her son’s talent.

But she learnt well before from an Auckland sports administrator that it’s the boys with ongoing parental support who make it in the rugby world which is why she ultimately left Raglan.

Both Angus and his brother Stuart still miss the place they grew up in, Wendy says, not ruling out a return for one or the other at some stage. If that ever happened “perhaps I’ll come and stay there with them”, she ponders.

Angus currently lives over the divvy in Flagstaff where he bought a house last year near some Chiefs players and their young families with whom he and Kristyn socialise.

Ngati Tahinga artefacts return from South Island to rightful owners

re-European Māori artefacts are back in the region after years spent in the South Island.

Around 450 taonga, including adze heads and fish hooks, were found when the Mannering family were breaking in the land for farming at Waikaretu in the early 1900s.

When the family shifted to Canterbury they took the collection with them.

Raglan Museum cultural advisor and kaumātua Russell Riki says the taonga are from the local Ngāti Tāhinga iwi.

At the behest of the Mannering descendants, the taonga have been returned to their rightful place with Ngāti Tāhinga during a pōwhiri held at Weraroa Pa on Sunday, paying homage to the ancestors, including Tāhinga, the tribe’s namesake. The artefacts were delivered by Mannering family members to the marae.

“The taonga will stay on the marae until the trustees decide where they will go,” Russell says.

Russell first got wind of the artefacts several months ago when he was called to a meeting with Nga Uri o Tāhinga Trust.

Another meeting was recently held to discuss where the taonga would eventually live and Russell knew it was a perfect opportunity to put Raglan Museum at the forefront.

Arranging for museum president Ken Soanes to attend, Russell was keen for the taonga to stay in the area where they originated and with other taonga, already housed at the Raglan Museum.

“The reason I wanted the taonga to come to the Raglan Museum is we already have close to 2000 Ngāti Tāhinga artefacts from the Bird family collection from Horea in Te Akau and it will be good to keep the collection together.”

“The taonga are an important collection that have been returned to the region of Ngāti Tāhinga. We at the Raglan and District Museum –Te Whare Taonga o Whaingaroa would be proud custodians of these ancient artefacts, and to display them to iwi and our public in a manner in keeping with their importance,” Ken says.

Ngāti Tāhinga are yet to decide if the taonga will reside at the Raglan Museum for safekeeping. They are planning to build a ‘mini museum’ to permanently showcase the taonga at Weraroa.

Ngāti Tāhinga tribal boundaries reach from Karioi maunga to Port Waikato – mai Karioi ki te puke o Tāhinga (from Karioi to the hill of Tāhinga).

“I would like to thank Ngāti Māhanga for being involved in returning the taonga to Ngāti Tāhinga,” Russell says.

Local writer recognised for work at Food Media Awards

ocal chef, food writer and photographer Emma Galloway has recently been awarded the Tui Flower Award for Best Recipe Writing - Editorial at The Foodies New Zealand Food Media Awards. Emma also received Highly Commended in the Best Book category for her best selling cookbook: A Year in my Real Food Kitchen.

What was your reaction? Were you expecting an award?

I think my reaction resembled the screaming emoji, you know the one with the wide eyes and hands clasped onto cheeks? Even if that’s not exactly what I looked like at the time, it’s an accurate depiction of how I felt on the inside!

I was lucky enough to be a finalist in eight of the 12 categories at this year’s NZ Food Media

awards, mostly for my recipe writing/styling and photography work that I do for Cuisine Magazine, but also for my second cookbook, my blog mydarlinglemonthyme.com and my Instagram account @mydarlinglemonthyme.

While I had hoped to at least get a placing in one award, I didn’t expect to actually win anything given this is the first year that I’ve joined the NZ Food Writers Association, entered these awards, and given the big names I was up against.

What was the competition like?

The competition in every category represented the best of the best NZ has to offer in the world of food media. In the Best Recipe category I was up against food writers who I have looked up to since I first started my blog back in 2010, food writers such as Ginny Grant and Julie Biuso. It was really such an honour to be recognised amongst such a talented, well respected and well known bunch. In the Best Book category my second cookbook A Year in My Real Food Kitchen found itself sitting alongside books by Annabel Langbein and Chelsea Winter amongst others. Annabel proved unable to beat in that one, but to even be named a finalist was a huge honour for me and the judge’s feedback on my book was really encouraging.

They said you understand your audience.

Who is your audience?

While my audience continues to evolve and change as more people open their eyes to vegetarian and/or allergy-free cooking, I think at the heart of it my audience is made up of people who want to connect with the food they eat in a more meaningful way, whether that be by growing food themselves, or learning how to incorporate wholefoods into their diet, learning the basics of cooking from scratch or feeding their family in a simple no-fuss, but always tasty way.

What do you try to do when writing recipes?

First and foremost I want people to actually cook my recipes -many recipes out there these days seem to be created more for looks than deliciousness and nourishment- so I like to cook and develop recipes in an inclusive way, using everyday produce-driven ingredients to

create interesting flavours as well as visually appealing food. I also know that not everyone is a trained chef, so I do my best to explain things in an encouraging way (without writing a novel!), offering plenty of tips and tricks in the recipe headnotes. When it comes to the actual recipe development, I like to think about not only the balance of flavours, but also textures too, which I think can make or break a dish. The biggest compliment is when my recipes become part of someone’s life.

Tell us about your latest book?

My best-selling second cookbook A Year in My Real Food Kitchen is a celebration of seasonal cooking, inspiring the reader to cook with what is plentiful at different times of the year, and while all my recipes (in both my books and on my blog) are gluten-free and vegetarian, my food is for everyone who loves great food.

How long did it take to produce?

I worked on my second book for about 6 months, which isn’t very long given I write/style and photograph everything myself. Ideally you

want at least a year to work on such a massive project, however that isn’t always possible as publishers have strict timeframes they need to stick to in order to get books released at the right time of the year. It then took about 8 months for the book to come together, with various edits, hours of proof-reading and designing done by the team at Harper Collins (my publisher for both books). From start to release, it’s about 18 months.

What are your plans moving forward Emma? What's the next project?

For now I’m kept busy writing/styling and photographing my regular columns for Cuisine Magazine and Nourish Magazine as well as freelance work for various food companies, but I am hoping to run a couple of cooking workshops over summer (something I had planned to do last summer, before my cake stall at the Raglan Creative Markets took over!).

I’ve also got a couple of other big projects in the pipeline that I hope to be able to share more about soon.

wo sometime Waitetuna schoolboys who wanted to be home in New Zealand so they could play rugby got their wish this term when their ecologist mum arranged a trip back from where the family are now based – Kafue National Park in Zambia.

The timing was “a bit of a one-off”, Kim Young-Overton told the Chronicle recently from their log cabin up a very long driveway off Old Mountain Rd, just two kilometres from the country school, because it’s usually term one that they return.

The boys, Canyon and Orion – now nine and 12 years old – have been away most of the past four years after their parents took up fieldwork in southern Africa with Panthera, an organisation devoted exclusively to conservation of the world’s 40 wild cat species and their landscapes.

But the pair were brought up in this cosy retreat they call home and started school at Waitetuna where they keep up with their old

live and work in Africa – her PhD focused on the conservation of large mammals in vast areas across the southern part of the country – it’s a “really rewarding occupation and very challenging”.

Her 25-year-old daughter Xia also works with the couple.

ith several confirmed cases of measles now in the Waikato region the Medical Officer of Health at Waikato District Health Board has issued the following advice.

MEASLES CAN BE VERY SERIOUS AND SPREADS VERY EASILY, IT IS IMPORTANT: • People planning to go to Auckland should check they are fully immunised first, kids down to 12 months of age can have the Measles/Mumps/ Rubella (MMR) vaccine early if going to Auckland (or high risk country overseas which would be via Auckland Airport) and need to wait two weeks after MMR before travelling.

• That people aged 1-50 who cannot show they are immune, by having had two doses of the MMR vaccine or having had measles should have catch up immunisation at their medical centre. Catch up immunisation is FREE with a $10 injection fee for those aged 16 years and over.

• That people born prior to 1 January 1969 are considered immune therefore do not need further MMR vaccination.

wenty four schools from the Waikato Region gathered on Tuesday 13th August at Cambridge/Karapiro for the 2019 Hillary Outdoors Get2Go Challenge. It was a great day filled with fun, friends and most importantly no school work.

There were four activities that our teams had to face: orienteering, paddle boarding, mountain biking, and a team-building challenge. This year our school entered three teams — with eight students in each — competing to win. The winning team receives the opportunity to go to Great Barrier Island, to compete against other schools from different regions.

f you had come to Raglan Area School on Wednesday the 28th of August, you would have wondered what on earth happened here!

You would have seen hair sticking up at all different angles, some like Pipi Longstockings.

But that’s not all - you would have seen rainbow hair, birds nesting on heads, ribbon woven into plaits, glittery mohawks and more.

So, what was going on? It was a fundraiser for Kids Can. Whaea Angela Massey organises it every year. Students pay a gold coin to enter Crazy Hair Day, which is donated to the charity. More money is raised from a sausage sizzle.

Crazy Hair Day is finished up with a parade. Everyone with crazy hair lines up to be judged by Whaea Angela. The people with the best hair get prizes. Chanelle Davidson was the overall winner. Whaea Kim won the ‘Whaea’ award with her glittery fairy light hair, and Matua Lee won the ‘Matua’ award, with his entire head painted blue.

At the moment, some students are learning how to write music sentences. Music sentences describe rhythms and beats. For example, in the photograph, you can see ice block sticks being used to write the music sentences for the song ‘Apple Tree’.

When you read music sentences, you read ‘ti-ti’ or ‘ta’. ‘Ti-ti’ is what you say for two short notes, and ‘ta’ is for one longer note.

It is fun having a professional music teacher.

TE UKU SCHOOL NEWS Bug Man

Protecting Our Ocean

O

ur class has been learning about the ocean, so that we can help save the ocean and everything that lives in it.

We went to look at the animals that live in the rock pools at Whale Bay. We saw a red slimy thing that looked like jelly and felt like jelly. It was actually a sea anemone that was closed up. Its tentacles come out when the water comes over it. Chaz found a sea snail. We saw some chitons and three sea stars. “The rock was slippery and I slipped in,” said Jack. “I nearly fell in two times but I saved myself,” said Caleb. Luckily everyone had brought a change of clothes.

Next we went to Te Kopua Domain and did a beach clean-up. The beach didn’t look very dirty, but we found 190 pieces of rubbish. Most of it was plastic. One bit blew away and went into the ocean. It was plastic so a fish might eat it. We hope nothing eats it and it goes on the beach so someone else can pick it up.

Our message is: don’t put plastic in the ocean or anywhere that fish can eat

it. Put it in the bin or don’t use plastic!

Coastal Protection Warriors at Te Uku School making a difference to our coastline.

t the start of Term 3 the year 7/8 students of Te Uku School were

given a mission from the Waikato Regional Council. Our mission, if we wished to accept it was to be part of

On the first week of term we meet up with Stacey Hill, the co-ordinator of the Waikato Regional Council Coastcare at the Domain. Stacey is passionate about promoting the importance of restoring and supporting the eco-system of our coastline. We got to learn about sand dunes being a part of the natural character of coastlines. That they play an important role, filtering water and often hold intrinsic cultural and archaeological values. Sand dunes provide an essential flexible buffer protecting coastal communities, and are our natural barrier to the sea. We also learnt about spacing of different species , the nutrients they need and how to plant them. The area we worked on is now filled with young

kowhangatara and pingao, along with many other coastal grasses and forest species. Stacey says that winter is the best time for planting so the seedlings have a better chance at survival.

Students from Te Uku School and members of the local community are proud to have been given the opportunity to support the ecosystem.

Stacey says our efforts at protecting the dunes will help lessen coastal hazards and erosion, as well as providing habitat for special plants and animals.

Waikato Coastcare is a partnership between the local community, iwi, district councils and Waikato Regional Council. The various groups are kaitiaki for 24 beaches on the east and west coasts of the Waikato region. Te Uku School year 7/8 students had a blast and we are looking forward to planting again with Stacey and being part of this project.

Happy Stream

T

he Juniors have been exploring ways of making the stream that runs through the Horse Paddock a happy sustainable stream. This waterway runs through the middle of the bush area that they play and learn in every Friday.

The water running through there can get deep when it has rained a lot, and sometimes does not seem to be very clean. The children have worked hard to clear the stream of sticks and rubbish which did help a little to make the stream run more smoothly.

They tested the water quality at different parts to look at the algae, smell, colour and temperature of the water. They learnt that if they planted more native plants along the banks of the stream this would help make the water quality better. The children wrote letters to Fred Lichtwark from Whaingaroa Harbour Care asking for help. Fred responded very quickly and

ug man came to Te Uku School on Friday the 3rd of August. He had a wonderful sense of humour and we all had a great time.

We learned so much from him, and here is a retelling of his amazing visit.

Sitting in the school library happily, we waited for our guest to enter the room and we chatted about what we knew of bugs. Suddenly the room went silent because Bug Man had entered the room.

He introduced himself as Ruud. Ruud said that he was from the Netherlands. Then he started to talk about native bugs from New Zealand and what the word ‘native,’ means.

“Can anyone name some native bugs for us?” A few hands shot up in the air, and those people named ones most of us had heard before.

After this Ruud realised that we already knew so much, so he switched to harder and more scientific information.

He talked about what kind of insects were pollinators, and what they did.

We found out just how protective bees are of their honey, and that they were very specific. Ruud also told us why bees sting. Most of us hadn’t known the major facts until he revealed them to us. He said that a bee would identify enemies by the smell of their breath when the enemy came to take their honey. The bees will risk their lives because once they sting you, they die.

Then someone asked how do bees defend their hives from wasps! We discovered that in China there is a type of bee which is so used to being attacked and having their honey stolen by wasps, it evolved so they attacked the wasp back. How? The evolved bee can now cling on to the wasp (all the while being careful of its stinger) and then the bee heats up its

own body temperature so high that the wasp is fried to death.

The bee can take just a little bit higher temperature than the wasp can withstand.

“Do you guys want to see something really exciting?”asked Ruud. Lots of people were thrilled! He said it's living and it likes to bite. “Does anyone here want to hold him?” he inquired further. There was only one lonely hand up, and that hand belonged to Isaac.

He came up thinking that he could handle a bite from a weta, what harm could it do?

When he left, well… let’s just say that he left thinking the opposite. After that we eagerly waited for more so, he decided to tell us about decomposers.

Some people didn't know what a decomposer was, so he told us all about what they were. Ruud informed us that a decomposer could be any living thing!

We discovered lots of animals and bugs are decomposers, but also mushrooms and fungi could be too.Now here's where it gets interesting! If we didn't have decomposers, in about 3 years the world would be 7 ft high of poop! The whole library practically shook with the sound of our scream of ´ew.́ And what will we do with all of that? A picture of a sloth blinked onto the screen. When Ruud said ¨Does anyone know why bugs live on sloths,̈ there were no hands in the air!

So he told us why bugs live on sloths, he told us sloths only eat three leaves a day and he told us they go to the toilet once a week! The sloths slowly climb down the tree and ́do their business, ́and the bugs then jump onto the poop.

They will lay their eggs in the fresh dung then jump back on the sloth and get a free ride home.

n Friday 20th September, Te Mata’s senior class, Mangо̄, is going to Ruapukes northern carpark to plant 390 native saplings.

We will be planting harakeke (flax), wiwi (knobby club rush), ngaio ( mousehole tree) and orange dune sedge.

The trees are being planted to help prevent erosion along our coastlines and hopefully help bring back native birds such as Piwakawaka, Tui and Oi ( Grey Faced Petrel).

Currently, the majority of Raglan’s people are helping with beach cleanups and planting along the coast.

It’s awesome that so many people want to help, even somebody picking

up a plastic bag or a can of coke could make all the difference in helping to save sea life. One stray plastic bag equals one dead turtle. But we are one of the few towns that is recycling, reusing and reducing. It just goes to show how much Raglan’s people care about keeping our coastlines healthy and sustainable. We hope to help to improve our environment and stay the clean, green community we are.

A huge thank you to Stacey Hill from the Whaingaroa Environment Center for organising and coming with us to the Ruapuke planting. The day wouldn’t be possible without her!

ast week, on Wednesday our school raised money for the Kereopa family who has lost their house in a fire, it was a miracle that no one was hurt. Our school decided we would fundraise for them and to show our support we would all wear different colours to school that day.

Lots of small children made some beautifully illustrated cards for Mika and Kai! We are very grateful to anyone who donated and even if you were unable to make a donation, wearing a colour to school was just as appreciated The effort that some of the children put into their costumes was so heartwarming and really made the

Kereopa’s day! Even the teachers got into it! Overall we made $572 dollars which will be going straight to Kaitawhiti and Mika so they can buy something for their bedroom, we were so happy that we could donate to them!

Our whole community has been just amazing, they have almost raised $27,000 on the give a little page. Everyone is donating household items, clothes and offering places for them to stay. What a wonderful community we are! Little or big, all donations were appreciated!

Te Mata Fishy Tickets

e have another new edition to our staff team. Towards the end of Term 2, Joshua Wallis joined Te Mata community as a 19 year old teacher aide and ambitious surfer .

He works three days a week in Mangо̄ and also at the Surf Co. in Raglan. He is so kind and loves to take us out to play sports, even in the rain.

Q. If you could, would you work full time at Te Mata School ?

Yep 100 percent .

Q. What are your hobbies and goals?

My hobbies are surfing, snowboarding and my goals, ok here's a cheesy one, to make everyone I come

into contact with feel happy and good about what they are doing .

Q. What made you want to apply for a job at Te Mata?

I just got approached about it from a family friend and I also knew Te Mata was such a great school so I just went for it .

Q. Has working at Te Mata School inspired you to become a teacher and if so why?

Yes it has and I realised how awesome it is to interact with kids.

Q. What do you think of the kids at Te Mata?

They are pretty cool and genuinely kind people .

Q. Who is your inspiration ?

Mum, Dad and Jesus.

Q. What is your greatest achievement ?

My greatest achievement was towing big wave legend Daniel Kereopa into one of New Zealand's gnarliest big wave spots on the East Coast of the North Island. I did this all while it being my first time ever towing. The goal is to be the person being towed next time.

Q. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully as a pilot but still able to be based in Raglan .

e have reintroduced fishy tickets to our school and it has been working its magic!

So many adolescent students have really stood up these past couple of months, in the hope of winning the award that they will receive from finishing a fishy ticket.

How they work, the kids are each given a fishy ticket, every teacher has a small hole puncher that they will use to click as many holes as they think necessary depending on what type of thing the child does. As soon as the child hits 16 clicks, they give the ticket to their teacher and will be given a new one, then at the end of the term they will collect their prize.

Having the fishy tickets has helped the school and it's students by encouraging them to follow the Fish Philosophy which has been the schools motto for many years. The 5 main key points of the Fish Philosophy are Play, Courage to be yourself, Make Their Day, Be Present and Choose Your Attitude, they are really being brought into play by these tiny pieces of paper.

Last term the kids that completed a ticket got an ice block each, while this term the teachers ordered 3 packets of chips from Joe’s Takeaways, our local fish n chips shop in Raglan for each class. The students that did not complete a fishy ticket this term are almost certain to get the prize next term.

WAITETUNA SCHOOL NEWS Maneuvering on the Mountain

Interview with Whaea Oli

W

e have recently got a new junior room teacher at Waitetuna School. Her name is Oli Ryks. She started in Term 2 and lives locally in the Waitetuna valley.

Question 1: How has your time been so far at Waitetuna School ?

It has been amazing and busy! The students, teachers and families across the whole school have made me feel very welcome. Joining the school just as the production preparation was beginning was a real bonus for me. The production was the perfect opportunity to work closely with everyone and for me to see students shine through the performing arts.

Question 2: What schools have you taught at before Waitetuna School? Raglan Area School and Te Uku School are the schools nearby that I have taught at. The first school I taught at was Plimmerton School down in Wellington.

Question 3: How is it different teaching at a big school compared to a small school?

I have found that at smaller schools, more students can take up opportunities such as going to cluster sports events or leadership within the school. For me as a teacher, being at a smaller school means that I can get to know all the students across the entire school because I see them and interact with them often.

Question 4: How old were you when you started teaching?

I first started working with children as an itinerant flute and recorder tutor in my early 20’s whilst studying performance music at University. This inspired me to re-train in my late 20’s so that I could work as a primary school teacher.

Question 5: What do you love about teaching?

I love working with young people and being part of their journey. I love thinking about how I can create opportunities and experiences that will inspire children as well as help them develop the skills, confidence and resilience to give challenging things a go and keep on trying. Teaching always gives me new things to think about as it is a profession in which you never stop learning. No day is ever the same, and I always have so much to learn from my students. I feel very lucky to have a job that is something I love doing.

Question 6: What do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy running, cycling and spending time with my family.

Question 7: What do you do to relax?

I find running a really effective way to unwind.

Sitting on my deck at home, staring out at the beautiful rural view, drinking a really good coffee and reading the newspaper is another way I like to relax on the weekends.

T

his term the Senior class, and some younger kids with their parents, went to the Whakapapa ski field on Mount Ruapehu for a day on the mountain.

The students had a choice to do snowboarding, skiing or go sledding. It was a fun day to both spend time with our friends and to learn how to maneuver on the mountain.

We all got into small groups with one instructor to help us and teach us a new technique - depending on our skill level. Everyone was soon skiing or snowboarding down the snowy slopes. It was a great way to spend time with all our friends and get to know the kids we didn't know very well.

X-Man visit at Waitetuna School T his term Mr X came to our school and taught us about sustainability. We learnt about compost and what plastic, steel, aluminum, glass and paper/cardboard is made of.

We also learnt: • Plastic never ever changes back to nature...ever • Plastic never disappears it just goes smaller and smaller - into small pieces that are called micro plastics.

• Fish eat micro-plastics.

• They have found places were it is raining plastic. They also found a plastic bag at the deepest place in the sea.

• Plastic is made from oil and oil is toxic.

• Glass will never turn to sand again it always stays as glass.

• Glass breaks down into smaller pieces as well.

• Aluminium cans use up lots of resources to be made.

We have to change how we use our stuff, we need to REUSE some things not use it once and then throw it away like aluminum cans.

We sat down with Mr. X for a quick interview: How long have you been in your job?

9 years.

What do you like most about your job?

That I get to work with lots of kids in lots of classes and at lots of schools and in lots of different places.

What does your job involve?

Teaching schools about zero waste, helping schools to set up systems to have zero waste.

What is your overall goal?

To see change or to create change in the Waikato.

What is the main message you want to get around to all the schools you go to?

We have to change how we use our stuff, we need to REUSE some things not use it once and then throw it away like aluminum cans.

How many school do you go to?

45 schools a year.

What was a fun part about the Thneed dance? The jumping in the Theend dance.

Katie: Confidence and Responsibility because everyone has to learn to speak in front of an audience and you have to be responsible to learn your lines and keep yourself and the younger actors under control.

Really exciting and enjoyable, probably the one thing I'll remember all my life.

It was the best production I’ve done.

What value did you learn from the school production?

Seren: Confidence on stage and working together to bring this production to life.

Did you feel any pressure being up on stage?

It was scary at first, but it became fun as I gained more confidence - I loved it!
