A merit award for an heroic rescue, an honorary life membership and unit of the year saw the Raglan crew take home nearly half of the awards on offer.

In a dramatic rescue in June, the Raglan Coastguard vessel Gallagher Rescue was called out to search for two kayakers who were swept 8km out to sea.

Facing stormy, treacherous conditions and in darkness, the Raglan unit used beacon coordinates in a dramatic night-time rescue to locate the pair at 8.45pm.

Found off Marokopa, south of Raglan, the pair were plucked to safety in the pitch darkness as they battled winds reaching 75km/h and a metrehigh swell.

The merit award recognises the temerity of the crew who put their lives on the line in extreme conditions to save the lives of the kayakers.

Long-standing member and current president of the unit, Wally Hawken was awarded an honorary life membership for his services to coastguard.

With 12-years under his belt, Wally has made valuable contributions to

administration, training, fundraising, community awareness and stakeholder engagement.

Volunteer coastguard Adam Daniel says the crew watched the awards in Raglan via video.

“Wally’s award is a really big deal for the Northern Region. We were so busy celebrating and making a noise we almost missed the Unit of the Year and the merit award,” he says.

Raglan Volunteer Coastguard recently conferred a local honorary life membership on secretary Brigid Green.

Brigid answered a call-out for dry crew members 12-years ago and has used her administration skills taking care of the endless paperwork required by the unit, in a truly professional manner.

In more recent times, she has had to utilise her financial skills after the passing of the treasurer Raewyn Mitchell two years ago.

Raglan Volunteer Coastguard recently put a cap on their wet crew but they are always on the look out for dry crew to help with administration and fundraising.

Sage words as Harbour Care’s two-millionth tree planted

I

t’s not every day a Government minister comes all the way to Raglan to plant a single tree but the spading in of a 10-year-old pohutukawa high on Wainui Reserve last week was no mere electioneering.

The strapping sapling – grown from seed gifted from the sacred Kawhia pohutukawa that marks Tainui’s birthplace – was the two millionth tree to be planted primarily in the Whaingaroa catchment over 25 years, after being nurtured at Whaingaroa Harbour Care’s Wainui Rd nursery.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage told the small gathering she was “delighted’ to help plant that tree to mark the milestone.

Her visit to the area continued something of a tradition as the first pohutukawa the nursery supplied to Wainui Reserve was also planted by a politician, the then Environment Minister Simon Upton, Harbour Care founder and regional councillor Fred Lichtwark told the Chronicle proudly.

All the seeds for the 2000 pohutukawa now planted in the reserve had come from the Tainui tree, as it’s known, he added.

After a karakia, Eugenie Sage got on with some spadework to help firm up around the latest planting with clods of earth, at the same time praising Harbour Care’s “commitment and mahi” over the past quarter century.

She paid particular tribute to Fred and Harbour Care chairperson Fiona Edwards for first recognising a need for the long-term conservation project, which encourages riparian planting by working alongside local farmers to fence waterways.

“You have been visionaries for Aotearoa,” she told the duo.

“This partnership (Harbour Care and farmers) has delivered real environmental success across the Whaingaroa harbour catchment ...

“It is entirely fitting your two millionth tree should be planted here.”

She also pointed out Harbour Care was a thriving community project used as a national model of riparian and catchment management, aiming both to improve water quality and control run-off and sediment.

Now Raglan has one of the cleanest harbours in the country, with locals reporting growth in the populations of a range of fish including massive spikes in

whitebait numbers. Another spinoff, Fred added, was that “a third of this 140-hectare property (Wainui Reserve) has doubled in productivity”.

The non-profit Harbour Care group also offers its expertise and resources to the local community for wider conservation and environmental projects and goals, and has been the subject of study and research by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment and by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature.

Among those at the tree-planting was marine ecologist Kristel van Houte who leads the Karioi Project – another largely volunteer-run conservation programme – which has worked for 11 years now on restoring Raglan’s coastal forest and its native birdlife.

Part of that work is about bringing back habitat or native breeding grounds, she said – a “flow-on” effect from Harbour Care’s planting of 150,000 individual plants in Wainui Reserve alone, and from its own efforts at predator control.

As a result there are now 50 oi or greyfaced petrel burrows being looked after in the reserve and on the maunga. That compared with only one or two burrows at

the outset, Kristel told an impressed Eugenie Sage.

“The seabirds literally land in this carpark,” she said. “We are trying to make the area a potential habitat.”

While funding to kickstart the Karioi Project came initially from Waikato District Council’s small community fund, Kristel said, there was an ongoing struggle for national funds – an issue which Eugenie Sage promised to look into.

The Conservation Department was set to “significantly increase (such) funds,” she reassured the group.

Raglan Arts Weekend set to wow visitors over Labour Weekend

aglan is gearing up to be the place to be over Labour Weekend with the highly anticipated Raglan Arts Weekend, now in its 11th year, ready to wow visitors.

The 35 registered artists have been hard at work over lockdown and beyond, and many of them will not only be showcasing new artworks, but also new techniques, borne out of a long period of being shut away from many distractions.

Take internationally acclaimed artist Sam Mathers, whose lockdown journey has resulted in a collection that’s a marked step away from his signature nautical style. It incorporates layers of new elements and free expression where Sam has “let loose”, as he describes it.

Then there’s Jane Galloway and Claudia Grutke, both having completed the Art2life Creative Visionary Program run by Californian artist Nicholas Wilton.

Both have been experimenting with mixed media collage, and for Jane – a more abstract style than her familiar detailed realist paintings.

“I’m finding that people are keen to get their hands on a lockdown inspired artwork as a physical snapshot of a very difficult time in the world,” says another RAW favourite, Toni Kingstone, who has sold a number of new artworks since RAW’s Easter event was postponed. Her favourite tool

Nine new artists have joined the trail this year, and visitors will also be spoilt for choice with a diverse and engaging range of media including stone sculpture, metal work, airbrushing, mosaic art, steel forgery, surfboard carving, ceramics, taxidermy, wood furniture, fine jewellery, digital fine art, painting and photography.

“It’s a self-discovery trail with approximately half of the artist studios accessible by foot within the main township,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW Co-ordinator. “The remaining studios are mostly in clusters a stone’s throw away so it’s very possible to see the majority of our talent over the 3 days,” she says.

Raglan Shuttle will be running a ticketed shuttle from town centre to the Wharf where you can visit Tony Sly, and see Rick Youmans

in action with live painting of semi abstract emotive watercolour and ink paintings of the Raglan coast.

They will also be running a daily shuttle tour to visit the RAW artist studios, East on Saturday and West on Sunday.

Visitors are encouraged to pick up a trail map from the Old School Arts Centre, and check out the ‘Talking about Climate Change’ Preview Exhibition, open week days 10am until 2pm until the end of RAW.

RAW will be held over Labour Weekend from Sat 24th to Mon 26th October. Most studios will be open 10am until 5pm for the three days, with some closing at 3pm.

ne of Raglan Community Radio’s newest DJ Craig Mitchell is getting a little bit country in his show Over the Fence.

The boy who grew up on a farm in Onewhero, is hoping to inject a rural voice into community radio with his Wednesday show which airs live from 12.30-1.30pm.

The show shines a spotlight on the news, issues, experiences and chat from the rural landscape around Raglan and New Zealand. “I started the show to give rural folk a voice and focus on their stories and what they want to hear.�

Each week, Craig interviews people involved in farming and the primary sector, both locally and drawing on experts across the country to discuss the highs and lows of rural life.

A farmer himself for 10-years, Craig knows how tough life can be - working in isolated locations, battling the elements and often on their own – he hopes to

tell the stories that best reflect the rural community of Whaingaroa.

Currently studying for a psychology degree, Craig has battled depression himself and hopes to work in mental health for the rural sector in the future.

It’s his first foray into hosting a radio show and he admits to a few technical hiccups. “I haven’t cut anyone off yet but I when I first did a phone interview, I didn’t realise that I needed to talk into the mic and not the phone. They couldn't hear me but I could hear them,� he laughs.

There’s still a bit of nerves before each show, but Craig says the support from station manager Aaron Mooar and the rest of the crew has been invaluable.

What potential do you think is still possible?

We have grown organically over the last 7 years. - from living here as a family with our 2 sons and only renting out 4 rooms. We now have a capacity of 11 rooms and are running a very successful Bed & Breakfast. There is still a huge potential for growth. As the managers/ owners quarters are separate we can rent

out the whole house, which has proved very successful and popular with yoga retreats, fasting retreats and corporate team building events. We have only just started tapping into this market. There is even the opportunity to have a courtyard café, or of course, an amazing large family home to accommodate the extended/blended whānau.

What kind of lifestyle does owning and operating Ocean View offer?

Operating Ocean View as a Bed & Breakfast offers an amazing lifestyle. We generally have 7 – 8 weeks off during the winter for holidays and maintenance.

Amanda plays golf most afternoons and Adam goes to the gym before check in at 2pm. Raglan Wellness Festival hits town this month T he inaugural Raglan Wellness Festival is set to hit Raglan this Month. The Chronicle caught up with organiser Gail McJorrow.

What is happening on the 18th October?

I am super excited to bring the first Raglan Wellness Festival to the Raglan Town Hall on Sunday, October 18.

How did this event come about? Who is behind it and what is the vision?

I am an energy healer and have recently moved from Wellington to the beautiful Raglan region. I do group sessions of Crystal Sound meditation twice a week at the Yoga Loft and have a studio at The Wellness Hub in the town centre.

The magical Raglan region with Mt Karioi, surrounding waters and black iron sand is a natural healing sanctuary luring people from all over seeking refuge from city life and is the perfect place to host a Wellness event. This is an opportunity to gather local healers together to showcase their healing modalities to locals and visiting out of towners.

The foundation of energy medicine is the understanding that we each have our own innate healing force, an intelligent, active inner physician. The festival will appeal to consumers looking for an alternative to the traditional pharmaceutical route to cure their ailments such as stress/anxiety/depression/ insomnia and chronic pain.

Raglan Crystal Sound Healing is the organizer of the event and I want to make it an annual event and also use it as a launching

readings, Tarot, Rongoa traditional Māori medicine and more.

Raglan Falafel will be serving their delicious vegan fare and there will be cushions to sit and where you can experience the amazing sounds and vibrations of

ACCOUNTANT / ADMINISTRATIVE PERSON - RAGLAN BASED

Aeronavics Ltd is seeking to employ a qualified accountant and administrative person for its operations in Raglan.Aeronavics is a designer and manufacturer of aerial robotic sensing and mapping equipment with high profile customers around the globe.The person we are looking for is highly self-motivated and a skilled accountant with at least some commercial experience. The accounts are processed in Xero and we’ll be looking to integrate with our inventory system, so some experience with both is preferable but not a requirement for a quick learner with new software. The job includes daily accounts administration, payroll, monthly board reporting, cash flow forecasts, and support for grant/investment applications and associated reports. Whaingaroa Talent Factory live performances this weekend

W

ith the much anticipated live performances from talented Raglan rangatahi coming up this Saturday, the Chronicle got the details of the young performers:

Django Chrysalis has been singing since he was 4 years old. He was given his first guitar lesson at age 9 and began performing later that year. He went on to write his first song the following year.

Luna Petzold de la Cruz has been singing her whole life but really started getting into it at age 9 when she was inspired by The Sound of Music. She has always loved music and when she realised she could do it herself there was no stopping her. Luna got her first guitar this year and has been learning to play so there is something to acompany her singing.

O Potasium is a newly formed band from Raglan Area School, consisting of Ezra Ruka on drums, Mathew Roughton on guitar and Harper Peart who they convinced to play bass so they could form the band especially for WTF2020.

Sasha Kirkwood has been singing her whole life and started writing and performing at age 14, when performing at kapa haka gave her the confidence to take her music on the stage. She often busks in Cambridge and last year performed in the the musical - '13' at Riverlea Theatre.

Merehia Hutchins started singing at age 5 and playing the guitar at 11. A family friend gave her a guitar a year later which she used to go busking at places like the Raglan market and last year was on stage at Raglan Community Radio's 25th annversary gig.

Summer Morgan-Haugh has written her own music for NCEA like a lot of our musicians. She played with a full band at Raglan Community Radio's 25th anniversary last year but will be performing solo this year.

The Pingaz are aspiring rock stars in the form of Josh Comins, Sam Snape, Jacob Bult and Lochie Begley. The band lives in permanent fear that their lead singer is one day going to break some of their equipment or even their practice venue because of his hyperactice performance style.
