ive students from Raglan Area School have been selected in the New Zealand Junior Team to compete at the World Junior Surfing Championships starting this weekend on the 26th October and running through to the 3rd of November at Huntington Beach, California, USA.

straight years from 2005-2011. After five of his students were selected for the team he thought this year would be a great time to get back into the International Competition and try and help coach his students to success.

It is a team of twelve surfers. So having 5 from Raglan Area School is a great achievement for a town like Raglan. With surfing now being an Olympic sport there is expected to be more than 50 countries fielding full teams.

Waitetuna hideaway fills niche role as ‘elopement destination’

t’s a surreal feeling being a spare guest at a wedding that isn’t supposed to have any guests – and isn’t a real wedding anyway.

But then it’s a rare day the Chronicle gets to sit in on a styled shoot promoting what has to be one of Raglan’s more unusual business ventures … a secluded hilltop hideaway aimed at couples who want to elope.

‘Box on the Hill’ is just that, explains Liz Cann from her Waitetuna lifestyle block, which has views of green rolling countryside almost as far as the eye can see.

“An elopement destination.”

The site’s also where Liz and hubby Jason have built their new home, but the self-contained studio unit is specifically targeted at the elopement market.

When the Chronicle visited last Saturday a hair and makeup artist was at work on “bride-to-be” Beckie Thurlow with “groom” Tom Rendall standing by, as a professional photographer recorded the couple preparing for their mock wedding.

Freshly made up floral arrangements adorned the intimate bnb studio, while red velvet cupcakes and two glasses of wine were set out on the deck table.

Down the pathway in the garden is a purpose-built wedding gazebo where couples can choose to exchange their vows.

Liz had invited the Chronicle along to see the place “all glammed up”. What is believed to be the Waikato’s first elopement

hideaway was good to go, she said, and would be promoted both through her own website and by advertising on other wedding planning sites.

Beckie and Tom are the faces for ‘Box on the Hill’, having won Saturday’s photo shoot – followed by a luxury night’s stay on site – through a Facebook competition Liz ran earlier.

The Tauranga couple are engaged, the mock-up simply a dress rehearsal for their own big day in 2021.

Liz also arranged an elopement giveaway through a Hamilton radio station,

and it has been inundated with couples keen to be the first to tie the knot at ‘Box on the Hill’ in two weeks’ time. It’s her top-of-therange $5000 deal with wedding ceremony followed by a two-night stay, breakfasts included, and a voucher to Raglan’s Rock-it Kitchen thrown into the mix.

Packages start from a simple $2000 ceremony and overnight stay but all can be tweaked to fit the couple’s preferences, she says.

“Some people don’t want to spend thirty, forty, fifty thousand on a wedding,” Liz explains, while others can do without the dramas. Or maybe they’re private people who want a beautiful day with all the trimmings, but not a traditional wedding.

Whatever a couple’s reason for eloping Liz can pull things together – celebrant, photographer, flowers, the lot – within days if need be.

She says Raglan’s “quite established” when it comes to all things wedding.

There’s local celebrant Robyn Riddle and photographer Anne Paar to call on, Raglan Cakes, and both Leef Floral Design and Raglan Floral Co (formerly Raglan Buds).

There’s also styling by The White Wedding Club.

Liz has arranged small weddings or elopements before, in the garden of a Coromandel motel – known as Hush Boutique Accommodation – which she and Jason owned a few years back.

But ‘Box on the Hill’ is on a smaller scale again, typically with only the couples themselves involved. For that reason she and Jason expect to often be the two witnesses required by law.

“I cry every time,” Liz confesses of previous elopements she’s arranged. “Each one is different … but I feel so privileged to share the occasion.”

volunteer fire fighter, Terry Yorston.

Why did you decide to volunteer ?

I've lived in Raglan my whole life and figured it was a good way to give back to the community. I had also heard they did cheap beers on a Wednesday night after trainings.

You

own

a

local

flooring business. How do you make it work with your contribution to the brigade?

That is one of the pros of being your own boss and being able to leave jobs to make call outs. Most of the people I work for are pretty understanding if I have to leave half way through a job although it does often mean I have to make that time up at the end of the day which can be a bit hard. Definitely wouldn't change it though and I would support my employees if they wanted to join a volunteer organization

How does it affect your family life?

It can be a bit time consuming when there are a lot of call outs and then trainings on top of that but my partner comes from a family of firefighters- her dad and grandfather have both been fireman all of their lives so she knows how it goes. My 3 year old daughter, Frankie, is great at waking me up in the middle of the night when the fire alarm goes off. She doesn't miss a beat.

What do you find the most difficult?

We have to attend a large number of medical calls, some of which don't have the best outcome. That can be quite hard dealing with.

What do you gain from the experience overall ?

I work with an awesome crew of people and have made some really good friends. Its a great way to challenge yourself and I have learnt a lot of new things through trainings and call outs. I would totally recommend it for anyone thinking of joining.

Raglan's first local brewery sets sail Labour Weekend R aglan’s newest business venture sets sail on Labour Weekend when Workshop Brewing launches its range of craft beers

With an off-licence application still to be submitted, for their Park Drive brewery, the crew at Workshop Brewing – brothers Matt and Stephen Williams, Jake Gibbs and Bruno David – will launch their range of craft beers aboard the Wahine Moe over the long weekend.

The launch is the culmination of five years’ work for the crew, who have been building their brewery and refining their brewing skills in the former panel-beater’s building on Park Drive, alongside Raglan Engineering, owned by Matt and Stephen’s dad Peter.

“We couldn’t have done it without his help, we’re all so incredibly grateful for his generosity and knowledge” Matt says.

In fact, there are countless friends, family and other Raglan locals who have pitched in to help create the unique brewery.

Matt says the idea of creating a brewery in their hometown came to him and Jake while they were enjoying a few ales in a craft brewery in Canada five years ago.

“We thought ‘this is what we need in Raglan’,” Matt says.

He went on to work for a UK brewery for a year to find out what it was all about and on his return to Aotearoa began putting plans into place.

They started out using a small customised brewery pilot kit, which was capable of producing up to 100 litres of beer, and that’s where Bruno – a freshwater scientist and keen brewer - continued experimenting with different styles of beer, along with different hops, yeast, barley and water.

Bruno says the quality of Raglan’s town water is ideal for making beer, “once we filter out the chlorine that the Council puts in it, we get it back to its natural state. Essentially our beers are made with pure volcanic spring water which has a unique and favourable mineral profile for brewing”.

Other than the purchase of three specialised 2000 litre fermenters, the rest of the brewery was custom built using in house expertise and the assistance of local businesses and friends. Local artists and designers were also used to develop the art work on cans and bottles.

So far they have produced a craft lager simply called ‘Our Lager’, a ‘Raglan Pale Ale’, and the ‘Chop Hop’ an APA, which are available in 330ml cans, along with a smaller range of speciality beers which is likely to grow over time.

and the beers will be available in other local outlets from Labour weekend.

“We really want to supply local residents and visitors with quality fresh local craft beer” Matt says.

They are planning to have their offlicence permit organised by summer where a wider range of limited release and seasonal beers will only be available direct from the brewery.

But until then, Workshop Brewing beers will be available on the Wahine Moe, which will be running boat trips from the wharf during the seafood festival between 12-5pm on the Saturday and Sunday of Labour Weekend, 26-27 October. Workshop brews will also be available from several selected establishments around Raglan.

Mistaken identity leads to award-winning short film

RAFFA Grand Phoenix Award winner Sue Bellerby.

A

red car, a blind date and two women named Sue are the subject of the Grand Phoenix Palm Award winning film at the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards (RAFFA).

Order for Sue is the brainchild of firsttime filmmaker Sue Bellerby who turned her

short story about a case of mistaken identity into a film shot entirely on her mobile phone.

“If I waited until I could afford all the equipment it was never going to happen,” she laughs.

“Looking at some of the other movie entries the quality and sound is better but you shouldn’t let that hold you back.”

With help from another local filmmaker Ray Diprose and a friend Rick in Queenstown, Sue was able to utilise their technical skills to edit the movie to fit the required timeframe.

“Rick came up with some really good suggestions and was really clever at showing me tricks on how to shorten the film.”

The story about a blind date and two Sues in red cars turning up at the same location is based on an incident that actually happened to Sue. In the movie Derek, the character meeting the blind date named Sue, is played by local Mark Reynolds, the blind date Sue is played by his wife Tish Taylor, Sue plays Mark’s nagging wife and the other Sue waiting for her order of fish and chips is played by Hayley Hailstone.

In between jobs, Sue had taken up writing to pass the time and get down on paper some of the interesting experiences she has had, including the mistaken identity one.

It was a toss up between this story and another one to turn into a film, but the simplicity of filming Order for Sue won out.

Raglan Surf Lifesaving

T

he Chronicle caught up with newly qualified life guards Sienna Harding Megan Abrams.

Tell us about what you and other local lifeguards have achieved.

Since April we have been training for our lifeguard qualification to become qualified lifeguards.

This was challenging at times and at some points we wanted to give up but we worked really really hard to achieve our goal and in the end, it was worth it.

This is only our first step in our lifeguard journey we can now train to become paid lifeguards when we’re 16. We can also compete in competitions, participate in cool exchanges around New Zealand and abroad.

We can also extend our skills with further training such as learning to drive an IRB (Inflatable rescue boat) and an ATV (All-terrain vehicle) What was involved to gain this qualification?

To qualify we had to complete a comprehensive exam which included: 400-metre pool swim in under 9 minutes 2 tube rescues in the ocean and pool 200-metre run, 200-metre swim, 200-metre run in the surf (run, swim, run).

50 question theory test First aid and CPR. We wouldn’t have been able to do any of this if it wasn’t for the dedication and help from our amazing instructors Josh Slattery, Cory Harvey and especially Mollie Abrams.

Explain what your commitment is over the summer months.

As qualified lifeguards, we are now apart of a team including senior lifeguards where we are rostered on monthly. During this time we watch the

beach and the public and keep the public who swim safe Why did you choose to volunteer as a lifeguard?

Sienna Harding & Megan Abrams - We started our lifeguard journey as rookies three years ago; we dreamt of being lifeguards and saving people just like Baywatch. We wanted to be a part of this great lifeguard community that we looked up to and develop exciting new skills and friendships. We are both most excited about competing and participating in exchanges.

Makayla Stacey - I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and test my abilities, to push my self and try new things. I really wanted to develop life skills like communication and first aid. I thought that lifeguarding would be a great way to connect to the community and to meet and create new friendships.

Adrian Reeves- I am a Rookie coach and I wanted to patrol with my children and give back to the community.

Cory Tanu - I thought it would be a great opportunity to make new friends and develop new skills.

Sean Young - I became a lifeguard because I always liked to be at the beach, in and around the water. It was just another way for me to get some fun out of swimming. I also love to help people.

“The ‘Sue’ story was easier to do – I had to consider the location, who is going to be in it. You can’t just do a film about going into space – it needed to be quite simple.”

Shot in Raglan and enlisting the acting skills of her friends, Sue had originally thought the film would only ever be shown to friends and family but encouraged by Ray, who is also a RAFFA judge, she decided to go ahead and enter.

“I was very insecure about the movie, it’s a totally amateur production. I had to get through that.”

While the story is based on Sue’s own experience, the characters and the storyline took on a life of their own once filming began.

“Although I knew what the beginning and ending was going to be as I started filming it morphed.”

Sue hopes her win at the RAFFAs will encourage other budding filmmakers to have a go at making their own short film.

“You don’t need expensive equipment or money – all you need is your phone and some friends,” she says.

Sue has some projects in the pipeline for next year’s awards and while she’s not in it for the win, she loved the filming experience and the award was just the icing on the cake.

RAS students become young entrepreneurs

R

aglan Area School’s Year 9-10 students are working hard to complete an annual Social Science project - Dragon’s Den; a fundraiser for the Year 9-10 camp to Mount Maunganui.

The students are required to create a business with a unique name, logo, slogan, and products. They are allowed to work in groups or pairs and have presented to a group of “dragons”, who voice their opinion on the student's businesses and ask questions. The project is inspired by the shows Dragon's Den and Shark Tank.

The students had a big opportunity to sell their products to the public on Wednesday the 18th of September. The market was held outside the Year 9-10 classrooms on a bright and sunny day.

Members of the community and parents from town came to visit and enjoy the festivities and browse the big range of

products, including fry bread burgers, homemade chocolates, bamboo straws, crystal pendants, and carved rimu spoons, to name a few. The stalls were a big hit with the customers, and everyone managed to make a lot of money towards their school camp; some meeting the goal of $100.

As we work through this project, we are learning how to be entrepreneurs and start a small creative business. We work with money and customers, and deal with the creation and demand for products. These skills will likely help us in the future.

This project was one of our biggest, toughest, and most enjoyable Social Science assignments of the year, and has inspired me to expand on my own business idea, Sugar Rush, which I hope will continue to grow. Some businesses are still selling! Keep a lookout for any small events in town or at Raglan Area School.

ow would you like Raglan to manage affordable housing development in the future? Come along to the Town Hall on Sunday the 3rd of November and tell us what’s important to you about housing.

Our local Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project – aka WRAP – are hosting a day long forum to capture the thoughts and aspirations of the Whaingaroa Raglan community about housing – affordable housing specifically.

Let’s assume we can inspire funders and landowners to support a housing development or re-development project, what should we include?

What does ‘affordable’ look like for you? How could you be supported to make your existing house more affordable to run?

Starting at 9.45 with a welcome, the forum will take the shape of 5 panel discussions designed to inspire a conversation about housing so we can capture as much of the audience input as possible for inclusion in future housing projects.

During the breaks there will a chance for the audience to also note their ideas on the themed postit boards around the town hall walls.

WRAP have brought together panellists who will speak to their own experiences and the solutions they found for their housing problems, experts in planning, consents, eco-building and energy conservation at both local and regional level.

Theme 1 – we explore the concepts of community led design and co-creation, how other projects have managed this process; Theme 2 – local experts and designers help us talk through initiatives for your current house and how we could incorporate ecodesign into future projects.
