Flower Show rose to the occasion
by Janine Jackson
The Raglan Horticultural Society’s Flower Show was awash with the colours and fragrances of locally grown flowers and vegetables.
More than 150 children took part this year, creating sand saucers, aqua jars, and miniature gardens on a dinner plate. Raglan
Area School students’ creativity was in full bloom, with Years 0-2 making sand saucers and Years 4–6 choosing either aqua jars or miniature gardens.
Alison Hewitt (Years 5 and 6 teacher) says the students worked collaboratively to create “the most amazing garden scenes.”
“They worked individually or in small groups and had to communicate, problem-
solve, and build resilience when things didn’t go to plan,” she says. “Some of the aqua jars took many attempts to design, as they have to be flipped – which required plenty of perseverance and creativity.”
Society president Geoff Pownall says the biennial event provides horticultural enthusiasts with an opportunity to showcase their finest flowers and vegetables.
“Every show we’re amazed by the passion and care that goes into each entry. It’s a real celebration of what our gardeners can achieve,” he says. “What makes it special is the sense of community. People come not just to compete, but to share a love of growing.”
Flower categories included roses, sweet peas, geraniums, and pelargoniums, while the vegetable section featured brassicas, root crops, and legumes. The floral art section added a creative touch, with entries in miniature, beachcomber, native, and foliage-themed arrangements.
Special thanks went to all who supported the day – including Raglan Area School teachers and parents, Raglan Horticultural Society members, Lisa Thomson for presenting the prizes, and Jono Hutson (Lodge) for his sponsorship.

Freedom 2 Fly Festival's Cabaret Night
by Katie Lowes
How lucky are we?! Freedom 2 Fly Fest’s Cabaret Night at Te Uku Hall blew us away!
Jessica and Jair Ramirez have done it again - produced and performed in a selection of acts that entertained and inspired the crowds filling Te Uku Community Hall.
The Freedom 2 Fly Team have rigged, staged, managed and delivered a world class
performance that had us all laughing out loud and gasping for breath as we saw performers spin from the ceiling, shoot arrows upside-down from feet to be caught by a juggler on a unicycle, engage the audience with the Whitney Houston drum challenge and much much more.
We are simply so very lucky to share this town with such a talented and dedicated group of performers. Jess and Jay are showing
all generations that performance is a life-long love. Many locals have been inspired to pick up juggling, dance, silks and other circus arts thanks to the consistent annual delivery of this Cabaret and wider week-long festival.
Thanks to the acts that flew, drove and unicycled into Raglan contributing to the programme of events from Sunday 2nd NovSunday 9th Nov. The calibre of performance from those national and international
clowns, circus, burlesque, and dancers was astounding.
Special thanks to Ray Diprose who volunteers his time and always goes an extra mile to run the whole festival smoothly. You are a local champion Ray!
A round of applause to Freedom 2 Fly, thank you for entertaining Raglan. Images thanks to Tom Noble.

Circus-dance festival wraps up with Sunday street performance
by Edith Symes
Busking Day downtown delighted crowds gathered at the lower end of Bow St last Sunday when Freedom2fly Fest 2025 wrapped up its third annual extravaganza of performing arts.
Fair to say, Mulletman & Mim – a husband and wife team from the South Island who have been street performing worldwide for decades – were one of the highlights with their unique brand of Kiwi comedy, acrobatics, juggling and an impressive bit of foot archery on high.
Stilt-walking and magic acts added to the day’s festive flavour – a fitting finale to a week of live shows and cabaret nights featuring both emerging and established artists from Raglan’s very own circus and dance school. Images thanks to Tom Noble.
Freedom2Fly showcase: A Season of Dance
by Katie Lowes
F
reedom 2 Fly Fest 2025 produced ‘A Season of Dance’ which saw bumble bees, hula girls, butterflies and other fantastical arrangements come to the stage in dance troupes across all ages.
The dedication of the dance students and their teachers was palpable to the audience who enjoyed a showcase of well rehearsed and choreographed acts.
The Raglan community is cheering on every dancer, teacher, and supporter that enables this experience for our tamariki and rangatahi.
With ex-students now leading the way choreographing pieces and leading troupes, the community building embedded within Freedom 2 Fly is second to none.
Dancers as young as 2 years old confidently performed on stage at the Te Uku hall, as well as older dancers falling from the roof tops on silks, and mapping collective choreography to inspire and educate the younger dancers and the avid audiences.
Freedom 2 Fly students consistently excel in their exams and it is no surprise with this incredible access to public performance made possible by their teachers Jess, Jay, Angie, Casabella, Val, Martina and Ariel.
Images thanks to Tom Noble.

New business brings circular creativity to Raglan
by Janine Jackson
There’s a new business in town delivering something a little different to Raglan.
Founded by architectural graduate Gavin Drinn, Cycled Design Raglan offers laser cutting, CAD design, and printcopy services with a focus on circular, low-waste production.
The first thing to catch your eye when you walk into the shop is a striking skull made from layers of laser-cut cardboard. Doubling as a hat stand, it’s also a sculptural piece of art.
It’s one of many stylish creations on display – from architectural plant stands and a jellyfish-inspired lamp to a stunning surf-inspired coffee table. Even the counter itself is Gavin’s own design.
“The products here show the novelty and potential of what can be done with a laser cutter and engraver,” he explains.
What really excites Gavin, though, is collaboration. “I’m not just saying, ‘Here’s what I’ve made – buy it.’ If something here inspires you, let’s work together and create something unique.”
Since opening, Gavin says he’s been overwhelmed by the warm welcome from locals. “I’d say close to 100 people have popped in so far – mostly inquisitive, but really enthusiastic about what I’m doing.”
Doing his bit for sustainability, Gavin takes reclaimed and surplus materials and, with a blend of artistic flair, architectural vision, and laser-cutting precision, transforms them into functional, lasting pieces.
“Supporting upcycling and reuse is an important part of what I do,” says Gavin. “In New Zealand, around 50 percent of construction and demolition waste ends up in landfill and I want to help change that.”
Raglan Theatre Academy brings Oliver Twist to life
Anew stage adaptation of Oliver Twist will open at the Raglan Town Hall on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November 2025, for one magic weekend. The production is adapted and directed by Ruth Hare, founder of Raglan Theatre Academy.
The show brings Charles Dickens’ classic story to life with a cast of 75 youth performers. It follows the journey of young orphan Oliver as he navigates the streets of Victorian London. From the harshness of the workhouse to the shadowy underworld of Fagin and his gang of pickpockets, orphaned Oliver meets a diverse cast of characters, each capable of both kindness and cruelty.
Director Ruth Hare said: “Although much has changed since Dickens’ London, some things remain surprisingly similar. It felt important to capture the essence of the time, both its hardship and its hope, and remind the audience it is as much about courage and compassion today as it was then.”
The cast includes Anatipa Tepania as Oliver is his first lead role at just eleven. He is joined by current familiar faces such as Giorgia Hope as Nancy, Katie Parkes as the Artful Dodger, Elliot Wilson as Bill Sikes and Vida Bradbury in her graduate year at the academy, taking on the highly sought-after role of Fagin. They lead a vibrant cast of young performers from the school’s production drama classes programme, showcasing the depth of talent within the drama school.
Performances run Saturday 29th November 2pm and 6pm and Sunday 30th November 1pm and 5pm.
Raglan Theatre Academy is a youth performing arts school based in Raglan, and runs a diverse range of after school classes, productions and school holiday programmes. Class options range from 7-18 years of age.
Tickets are available to purchase online at www. raglantheatreacademy.co.nz
New to Raglan, Gavin recently moved here with his partner, Georgia Sumner-Davis, a qualified veterinary physiotherapist. Originally from a small coastal town in South Africa called Umhlanga Rocks, Gavin is a lifelong surfer.
“When you’ve surfed for over 26 years, you get to know the best breaks around the world,” he laughs. “Raglan was always on the list, and so far, when it’s not onshore, it’s fantastic.”

THE WOZ
Whaingaroa Youth Movement presents The WOZ, a strangely familiar adventure.
A twisted storm takes ‘Dot’ and firmly puts her in a place she does not understand. Dot is lost in a curious world trying to find her way home. Along the road she meets some oddly instrumental friends who are also searching.
Off they journey in the belief that The Wiz will help them, he will save them. He will give them what they long for. But….. he’s a shifty manipulator, a master of distraction.
As they adventure they find that (in actual fact) The Wiz has no significant power. They come to learn that everything they search for is already within each of them. Along a yellowing road they find courage, knowing, heart, and a sense of home. They come
to understand that they are not alone and recognise the magic in being together.
Whaingaroa Youth Movement (est. 2003) are a group of 60+ young people aged between 6-18yrs. We are about being together; to dance, create and explore ideas collectively. Our performance work is about who we are, where we live and how we see the world.
Come join us to celebrate dance, creative spirt and storytelling in the Bush Park for our end of year show. BYO seating (no dogs allowed - there will be lions!)

Bar crossing seminar returns to Raglan
from Coastguard
Crossingthe Raglan Bar is something many boaties will do this summer, and it is also one of the riskiest parts of any trip.
Bars can shift, lift, break and turn in seconds. Even experienced skippers get caught out, and every year there are preventable tragedies on bars across Aotearoa. In 2024, 23% of craft-related drownings occurred during bar crossings and five of those involved capsize incidents. Most happened close to shore.
This month, Coastguard Tautiaki Moana and Raglan Volunteer Coastguard are hosting a Bar Crossing Seminar and onwater demonstration to help local boaties understand the Raglan Bar, read conditions, and make safer decisions every time.
Why this matters in Raglan
Just last weekend, Raglan Coastguard volunteers responded to a serious capsize on the Raglan Bar. Four people were rescued thanks to:
• Logging a bar crossing report
• Wearing lifejackets
• Activating a PLB
• The fast response of nearby boaties and volunteers
THINKING TO MOVE?
Their preparedness made a big difference, but many incidents do not end as safely. This seminar is about upskilling before you are out there.
You will learn:
• How to read the bar and when not to go
• How swell, tides, wind and river flow interact at Raglan
• What a safe approach looks like
• Real stories from Raglan Coastguard skippers
• • How to log a bar crossing report with Coastguard
Weather permitting, there will also be an opportunity to head out on Gallagher Rescue for a real-time bar observation session.
There is a small cost for the on-water portion. To secure a place on the vessel, email raglancoastguard@gmail.com

Popcorn cart proves just the ticket for once-weary transTasman flier
by Edith Symes
It may not be the height of his career but popping corn and selling it from a converted coffee cart downtown is a fulltime occupation for local “good guy” Graham Irvin – and a lot easier, he reckons, than erecting massive seating systems for 2000 school-kids at a time back in Perth.
Yep he’d been there, done that – for 23 years in fact –so when this former scaffolder got the chance seven years ago for a lifestyle change which would keep him in Raglan year-round with his young family, he took it.
“I was getting weary of travel,” Graham told the Chronicle, of his regular seven-hour flights across the Tasman, from February to August every year when the scaffolding work was on.
Enter good family friend and Taipari Ave neighbour Marshall Waterman with an offer Graham couldn’t refuse. Marshall was an American who spent his summers in Raglan, selling kettle corn from the old Bow St Motors forecourt.
It was around the time another American in town, Bill Neal, set up his ‘Sweet As’ popcorn business, operating from the basement of his home.
A decade or so on, Marshall decided he would really “rather play golf and go fishing” when in Raglan, so maybe Graham would like to try his hand at popcorn-making.
Graham was game, and gave it a go – tentatively at first, on weekends only – after Marshall had set him up with his
trailer and marquee, and sourced all the ingredients from corn kernels to oils and sugars.
“He handed me a gold plate,” says Graham. Seeing how popular the product was, he decided to turn this small business into his permanent job and hasn’t looked back.
Big Poppa’s Kettle Corn is now well established in a prime position at the bottom of Bow St – a stone’s throw from the jetty – thanks to both Waikato District Council and Ngati Mahanga approval, for which Graham is grateful.
There’s just enough space to park his fairgroundstyle cart, with its eye-catching signage, and the attached marquee. Graham sells from the cart, while popping and bagging this “sweet & salty” treat inside the tent setup, with a local teen or two to help out at busy times.
And he’s often been seen giving kids free popcorn when they can’t afford a bag, says regular customer Leanna Darby. “He is one of the good guys in our community who puts people ahead of profit.”
Graham points out however that he makes a good living out of selling popcorn, and loves what he does. He also ventures over the divvy and parks the cart some weekends at Morrinsville, while every third Saturday it’s off to Tamahere Country Market.
“But I could stay here seven days a week,” he says of his Raglan base.
Graham’s recently developed a new flavoured cinnamon-sugar popcorn, with the help of his daughter Charlie who’d given Taco Bell cinnamon twists a go. It’s incredible, says Leanna. “Dangerously good!”
Raglan Community House update
from Mike Rārere
As the year draws to a close, Raglan Community House has continued to deliver community support programmes, including Koha Kai on Tuesdays which provides an affordable shared meal.
Thank you to volunteer cook Johanna for her time and care. Planning is underway for new Healthy Cooking on a Budget sessions in the new year.
The Raglan Youth Development Project, launched in April, has supported local young people to move toward
independence, employment and access to services. The project builds on the work of the Whāingaroa Youthwork Collective. Further funding is being sought to continue this mahi in 2026.
A Blood Pressure Monitor is now available for public use in the Community House lounge, thanks to a collaboration with the Heart Foundation and Raglan Medical Centre. It can be used during opening hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.
The last business day for 2025 is Friday 19 December. The House will reopen on Monday 12 January 2026.
Gentle exterior cleaning for coastal homes
Fresh Rinse is a locally owned exterior cleaning service providing gentle, low-pressure soft-washing that protects your home from coastal wear and tear.
Using a salt-based solution to break down mould and mildew without damaging surfaces, they help keep Raglan homes clean, safe and looking sharp, from walls and roofs to decks, driveways and gutters. The Chronicle chats to Shaarne and Alex from Fresh Rinse to hear about their venture.
Tell us about Fresh Rinse and what services you offer clients in the Raglan Community.
We are a Raglan-based building and house exterior cleaning service, specialising in exterior soft-washing which is a gentler alternative to more high-pressure methods.
A salt based solution is used to do the heavy lifting, breaking down mould and mildew, which left untreated causes damage to your property’s surfaces.
We also provide related services such as deck and driveway cleaning, roof treatments, gutter clearing, solar panel washing and multi-storey window washing. Basically if it’s outside, we’ll give it a go!
Why did you decide to start the business and what appeals to you about the work you do?
After moving to Raglan to be close to family, and with young children of our own, we quickly realised that working away for half of the time was too hard and so we had to make our own opportunities here.
My experience as a tunneller for 16 years in Australia and here in New Zealand has given me a broad skillset which comes in handy every day. I’m enjoying being outdoors and seeing the sunshine, rather than underground doing shiftwork, and coming home to my family each night is the best.
What maintenance advice do you to have for home owners in Raglan?
Having washed a range of houses locally, both old and new and big and small, I can see that earlier intervention can save a big bill for a paint job or minimise the risk of a loved one being injured on slippery surfaces. Whether it’s DIY or hiring someone, regularly cleaning your property’s exterior surfaces is a safe bet.
How do people get in touch with you and what is the process when people reach out to you?
You can find us in the Local Rag & Chronicle directory! As well as contact via the website, socials, email or good old telephone to organise a free quote.
