Raglan Community Board November Update We would like to acknowledge our community and the ongoing challenges that many face in lockdown; our hospitality businesses, events that have had to be postponed or cancelled and the many other things whānau are managing.

We would also like to say a big thank you to all our community essential workers - you are awesome!

It was good to return to some semblance of normality with the summer time weather over the weekend which brought many to our shores - boaties, beach goers and shoppers - a little overwhelming no doubt but reassuring at the same time; Whāingaroa is a desirable place to be.

Blending traditional gelatomaking with products from around Whāingaroa, the couple use Dreamview milk and locally-sourced fruit, and they hope to keep the flavours as close to home as possible.

“We’re going to work with the seasons as much as possible. It’s citrus season at the moment so we are juicing as much as we can and freezing so we can make citrus sorbets or gelatos throughout the year,” Hanna says.

Keeping it as local as possible, they are keen to utilise excess fruit people may have on their trees.

“There are so many fruit trees here in Raglan that are overflowing with fruit,” she says.

While Hanna’s background is in the food and hospitality sector, Lars has come to the food industry with a passion for flavourful food.

“I did cabinetmaking for so many years that it was time for a change. And I like food better than I like furniture,” Lars laughs.

His love for the gelato-making process is so intense, he even attended online classes at the Carpigiani Gelato university in Bologna, Italy.

“They have the maestros of teaching gelato-making in the old way. Without additives and without shortcuts,” he says.

Such is his dedication to creating authentic gelato, Lars did the course on Italian time, and for three weeks he went online from 7pm to 3am.

His gelato instructor Gianluca Degani is famous in Italy for his highquality gelato and writes articles for a bimonthly publication on artisan gelato.

“He taught me a lot and even now if I have a question, I just send him an email and he gets back to me the next day,” Lars says.

The couple are kept super busy with their new baby Adam, but they say he is very relaxed and fits in with their gelato-making venture at the Old School Arts Centre kitchen.

Despite the uncertainties with Covid, the pair are spending their time getting their stock up.

They are also waiting for a gelato cart to be delivered from Italy, which

will keep their frozen treats at the ideal temperature when they are able to start selling at the Creative Market.

As well as gelato flavours of pecan, chocolate, pistachio, vanilla and more, they are also making sorbets including mango, grapefruit-ginger and raspberry-beetroot sorbet.

All the flavour profiles are natural and come from the fruit, vanilla beans, chocolate, nuts, and other ingredients.

“If you look on the back of the supermarket ice cream packet there are so many ingredients there which we don’t touch. It also has a lot of air incorporation which means it is ready to scoop,” he says.

Like a good wine, Lars explains, gelato needs time out of the freezer before it’s ready to scoop.

“It’s a good sign if you can’t get your spoon into it when it has come straight from the freezer. You need to let it sit for about five minutes before you enjoy the first scoop” he says.

ver the last two weeks, there have been five family harm incidents reported and ten dishonesty offences.

Three people are now in custody and have been charged with various dishonesty offences in the Raglan area. Thank you to those who came in and reported missing property and thefts.

We still have a number of thefts occurring in the Raglan east area, often targeting unlocked garages and vehicles, stealing bikes and scooters amongst other things. Almost all thefts have occurred on unlocked vehicles and garages. Need more be said - please lock up, and don’t leave valuables in your vehicles.

Papanui Point is now the subject of yet another search; four people in the last 12 months have gone missing off that same rock. A working group from various agencies is being established, with changes to the area likely. We don’t want to see the area closed, so please be careful! If you see something unsafe, then speak up.

Please remember that Raglan has a 24 hour ‘liquor ban’; this means that there is to be no consuming or holding of alcohol in any public place within the designated area, including within vehicles. Going forward over the summer months this is going to be strictly enforced. If you are unsure exactly where, then please ask or go onto the council website.

Labour of love for ‘Spirit of Christmas’ exhibitors

Local creators hard at work creating wares for the 'Spirit of Christmas' exhibition.

A lot of effort goes into this homegrown show, potter and clay shed tutor Lindy Moir told the Chronicle, her fingers sore from threading clay beads onto jute for the decorative garlands she crafts.

And it’s hard work right down to mixing bowlfuls of clay slip to the porridge-like consistency needed for bonding, decorating and protecting pottery pieces, she says.

But all the time and effort are definitely worth it, she adds. “We’ve got a fantastic team (here at the clay shed) and when everyone brings in beautiful hand-made creations the show just comes together ... It’s a happy, joyful time.”

Fellow tutor Justine Davies has also been busy creating her trademark totem stacks for the garden, while first-time exhibitor Robyn Marsters has crafted a range of simple yet stylish bowls and cups.

Then there are the bold, bright keep cups and candles of well-known local ceramicist Sarah Bing, who exhibits regularly at the show.

But it’s not just pottery on offer at this cash-and-carry art sale: there’s everything from three-dimensional driftwood Christmas trees and readyto-bake brownie mixes, to creative glass objects, preserved flowers in jars, leaf-dyed cushions, fabric art, magnets and calendars, jewellery and paintings.

All items are priced at between $5 and $500.

And for the fourth consecutive year orders will also be taken for home-made Christmas cakes baked in Bing Ceramics’ unique clay pots, says exhibition coordinator Susanne Giessen-Prinz. This is a quality gift wrapped in compostable packaging and

still useful long after the cake is eaten, she adds.

Orders need to be in by December 5, for collection two weeks later.

Susanne suggests shoppers come and support local. “Think creatively and outside tradition when decorating your home this year, and get your whanau into the Christmas spirit … Be amazed at how creative and quirky our awesome arts and crafts community is.”

All the items on sale are innovative and plastic-free, with funds raised poured back into the Old School’s new two-storey clayshed-cum-creative space. “Better than buying at The Warehouse,” quips Susanne, who also expects Santa to drop by at some stage. *The Spirit of Christmas show will open at the Old School in Stewart St on Saturday Nov 27 through to Dec 11, providing Covid alert level restrictions do not tighten. If a change prevents the Old School from opening, the exhibition will be run as an online store with photos and prices of artworks on display for shoppers to purchase by email.

RAW Preview Exhibition reopens – and also launches online

he event may have been postponed for the second year in a row due to Covid, but the Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW) is still offering up art for its fans.

This week sees the re-opening of the Preview Exhibition at the Old School, coupled with the Preview Exhibition launching online for the first time ever. “You now have the option of either visiting the Preview Exhibition in the flesh, or browsing the art from the comfort of your own home,” says Nicky, RAW Co-ordinator. “We’ve worked quickly to adapt in this current

There is also a main exhibition, suitably titled: ‘And Then We Paused/ Reflections of a Covid World’.

“It’s a sizable collection of work with two artworks per artist, meaning 84 artworks are displayed,” explains Nicky. “A big chunk of these were sold in the four days the Preview Exhibition was open before lockdown, but there are plenty still up for grabs. We have 13 new artists and the collection covers a

really broad range of media - sculpture, painting, photography, metal work, encaustic, print making, illustration, pottery, weaving, textile art, designer jewellery, to name a few.”

Sales from the Preview Exhibition go to the artists and also towards running RAW, a not-for-profit event. The show will be open at the Old School daily from 10am until 2pm and will run until Sunday 21 November.

The opening of retail stores is encouraging, although sadly the hospitality industry has been left behind, still unsure whether doors will be able to properly open soon.

While more information on the Vaccination Certificate system is expected before months end, the likes of hospitality and close-contact businesses are under huge pressure. In theory the mandate for vaccination will allow businesses to remain open through all levels of the traffic light system, but will need to work with staff around vaccination and work within a whole new set of enforced systems and processes. Businesses are going to need customers’ patience, support and buy-in to make it work!

Over the past few weeks, the Raglan Chamber have been working furiously to provide the much-needed support and information to the Raglan business community.

We have held live zoom presentations with an array of specialists including an employment lawyer, commercial banker and an HR and people specialist. In the interest of sharing the knowledge and helping everyone get through, here are some of the take home points: Vaccination certificates will be required for 'closecontact' businesses which have not yet been defined so WATCH THIS SPACE as it could affect you.

Staff in the health and education sectors need their first vaccination by the November 15 deadline.

Businesses not covered by the mandated vaccination program can still require staff to be vaccinated.

EV smart charging and distributed energy resources trial to launch in Raglan Community news

W

EL Networks and Raglan Local Energy are launching an electric vehicle (EV) smart charging and distributed energy resources (DERs) trial.

To prepare the electricity network for the future, the 36 month Raglan-based trial will use smart charging units to understand the way EV drivers charge their vehicles at home and the integration impact on the WEL network.

The trial, made up of 10 Raglan-based EV owners, will use smart chargers that are fully integrated into WEL’s Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS).

This platform allows multiple devices to be controlled remotely (including EV chargers, solar, battery storage etc.) using artificial intelligence with benefits for customers, including household level protection from overloading due to increased electricity consumption and lower running costs.

The objective of the trial will be to enable a better energy future for customers using a data-driven innovative service model, to improve the economics and appeal of EVs by shifting charging from times of the day when energy is more expensive to off-peak periods, and when wholesale prices are low – typically when wind and solar are generating strongly, WEL Networks Chief Executive Garth Dibley says.

“As part of the Government’s push to drive down climate emissions, transportation is one of the biggest opportunities we have in the

energy sector to help New Zealand achieve a low-carbon economy. As EV uptake increases, the EV network integration will have a significant impact on energy affordability and network reliability.

“Smart charging enables charging at times when demand is lowest and electricity is cheapest which reduces the impact on the network and the cost to the customer. Through the learnings of this trial, it will allow us to prioritise the right resources at the right time to meet the increased demand that’s expected from the electrification of transport,” he says.

Dibley says the community involvement and engagement with Raglan Local Energy, which started in February 2020, has been one of the major success stories to date.

“We want to continue to encourage locals, through proactive engagement and collaboration throughout this trial, to be part of network solutions. We also want to ensure that EV owners have a positive experience using the network to charge their vehicles.

We hope this trial will help us understand how we can maximise the benefits to customers by offering products that reduce their EV charging costs, as well as how we can manage EV charging in a way that helps with grid and network stability,” Dibley says.

Pets and fireworks

W

hile we enjoy the party atmosphere that comes with big displays of loud noise, colour, and flashing lights this is not always a fun time for our animals.

Approximately 80% of our pets are scared of fireworks.

This fear is not always obvious so we need to make fireworks season as stress-free as we can for our pets.

Fireworks season does not just apply to Guy Fawkes but right through the summer to New Years Eve celebrations Your pet needs a safe place to be. Provide a hiding place or move bedding to a quieter, more secure area.

•

Shut doors, curtains, and windows to keep as much of the flashing lights and noise out as possible. Turning the TV or radio on can help muffle the noise. Make sure all breakables are put away, just in case your pet does panic.

•

Distractions are ideal. Get creative with toys and chews to keep your pet busy. Treat balls are great for this.

•

Treats during this scary time can offer positive reinforcement if your pet is food orientated. Think of it as rewarding for cool, calm and collected behaviour.

•

Stay home with your pet if possible. They will be less stressed with you there for reassurance.

•

Do not punish your pet for being afraid, damaging things in panic, or soiling inside as a result of fear. Punishment will make this time of year much worse and can exacerbate fearful behaviour.

•

Provide a litter tray inside for your cat. Toileting outside with flashing lights, big booms and noise can be scary.

•

Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with an identification tag and that their microchip details are up to date. In the event that your pet does get a fright and get lost, this is the best chance they have of getting back to you.

•

Be prepared. Find out where and when your local fireworks displays are going to be held.

ll sporting clubs rely heavily on volunteers to assist with the smooth running of their organisations.

Howard Jackson, head greenkeeper at the Raglan Golf Club, often wonders how he coped with the management of the 18-hole course before volunteers came along to assist him.

“If it wasn't for the hard work, dedication and devotion to the club by volunteers, the course would not be in the pristine condition it is now,” remarked Howard.

“Come rain or shine, the boys are here with a smile and a strong desire to improve our course.”

Tasks carried out include fairway and greens mowing, weed-eating the surrounds, collecting, cutting and delivering firewood, maintaining equipment and machinery, trimming/pruning shrubs and trees, collecting rubbish and changing tee blocks.

t’s been wonderful to see businesses and communities making the most of Alert Level 3, Step 2 while also working hard to keep each other safe. I’d like to thank each and every one of you here in Taranaki – King Country Electorate for the effort you’ve put in to get us where we are now. It’s a real testament to your commitment and kindness.

At Step 2, retail stores and public facilities like libraries and museums can reopen, with face covering and physical distancing requirements. Outdoor gatherings and outdoor organised exercise classes of up to 25 people can go ahead – but do remember to try to keep two metres apart, where possible, to minimise risk. Masking up, scanning in, staying distanced, and staying home and getting tested if you’re sick remain central pillars of our COVID response.

Along with sticking to these behaviours, the key to a safe summer is simple: ensuring as many people as possible have had their two doses of the COVID vaccine, so we can all do more of what we enjoy. It’s been fantastic to see so many people here in the district rolling up their sleeves and getting vaccinated – and encouraging their friends, family and workmates to get their vaccine, too.

More than 3.2 million Kiwis have now been fully vaccinated, including 584,797 here in Waikato DHB, but we still have a way to go if we want to make the most of the upcoming summer. We know that getting vaccinated means you’re less likely to pass COVID on to your loved ones.

If you haven’t had your first dose yet, there’s still time to get your two shots for summer. You can book by logging on to bookmyvaccine.nz, or by calling the COVID-19 Vaccination Healthline on 0800 28 29 26.

There are also plenty of places that don’t require a booking. Head to covid19.govt.nz to find a walk-in or drive-through vaccination centre near you.

Our target is to get as many people as possible fully vaccinated, so that as many people as possible are protected. By ensuring at least 90% of eligible people have had their two doses here in Taranaki / King Country, we can be confident that our communities are safer as we take the next steps.

Lately, he’s been working on a wind turbine to power the bee shed.

“We get a lot of wind up here so why not try and harness it and be resourceful,” he says.

That resourceful approach has also seen him collaborate with another local boutique foodie business, Raglan Chocolate and they are about to launch handcrafted honey chocolates.

The book had a few false starts. I had originally planned to position it as book number four in the Good Life series and have it function as a story that bridges this series and another one I have in my head (a comedy about an all-female criminal organisation, which may or may not get written).
