I would say my favourite was the Wizard of Oz. I really enjoyed playing the wizard, and I think it was among my best work.

aglan's very own Performing Arts School; Raglan Theatre Academy caters for students from 6-18 years of age and for this year's production, they will be bringing 'Narnia' to life in a spectacular show.

This week the Chronicle sat down for a chat with Connor Marquand, who plays Peter.

What can we expect from this years performance?

This year's performance is going to be the biggest yet! It follows the story of four children who stumble upon a magical land in the grip of an endless winter. Expect lots of action, even more than the previous four shows!

How much preparation has there been?

There has been a huge amount of preparation for the show. It's been all go, with rehearsals, choreography and much more. As crunch time gets closer, it only gets more hectic.

Tell us about your role this year.

This year, I am playing Peter, the eldest of the four children. This is the largest role I have taken on in Raglan Theatre Academy, and it has certainly been a challenge to prepare for such a part How many years have you been involved and what roles have you played?

This is my fifth year of involvement with Raglan Theatre Academy. I have

Saturday night live: combo art auction heads for finale

hink combo and you may visualise a small band or perhaps something on a fast-food menu, but for the Old School Arts Centre it’s a novel way to attract the best prices for 60 donated artworks while also raising funds for Raglan’s annual arts weekend next Easter.

An open auction this Saturday night will be the second part of the combo and finally decide who in the community walks away with some of the best of Raglan’s contemporary artworks – from paintings and pottery to photography, taxidermy, flax weaving and fine drawings.

The eclectic mix of works has been on exhibition for the past six weeks at the old school in Stewart Street where a steady stream of art lovers has called by to bid in the first part of the combo, a silent auction.

Who’s got what will be revealed at the venue this Saturday night, with real estate auctioneer Julie Hanna wielding the hammer.

“There’s an awesome lineup of stunning pieces to be won,” centre manager Jacqueline Anderson told the Chronicle. “And this (the open auction) is the final push.”

Spot prizes and refreshments will be on offer, she said, and bargains are to be had.

All artworks up for grabs have been generously donated by well known local artists like Jane Galloway, Claudia Grutke, Jillian Lankshear and Richard Gemmell.

Also included are ceramics by The Monster Company, Annick Faubert’s unique taxidermy, art by Raglan Floral Co and much more.

Early bidders can take their chances on what they’ve offered in the silent auction, but the organisers’ advice is to also come along on Saturday night. “You will need to return to check your bid hasn’t been outdone by someone else, so try to get to the live auction or you may be outbid.”

Although funds raised will go straight back into supporting Raglan Arts Weekend in 2020, the old school centre supports a myriad of other community events – Raglan Arts to Wear, Raglan Film Festival, the creative market, local exhibitions, clay and art classes, music nights and movie screenings – which all ultimately benefit.

It is not unusual to have 100 to 150 people – including school groups rehearsing productions at this time of year – use the heritage-listed building in just one day, says Jacqueline. Fundraising is “ongoing” for the centre’s committee members, she adds.

At the close of Saturday night’s auction the old school will then be readied for the opening of the annual Raglan Spirit of Christmas Art Show a week later. It’s now in its fifth year – “an institution”, as fundraising stalwart and potter Suzanne Giessen-Prinz points out.

A variety of art priced from $5 to $500 will be on sale for the festive season.

Everything from carefully constructed driftwood Christmas trees to colourful glass Heartbeads, handcrafted knives and fabric art has a “unique” Raglan flavour, says Suzanne.

Consumables such as festively packaged brownie mixture and, for the second year running, locally baked Christmas cakes in handcrafted clay pots will also make popular gifts.

The show runs for a fortnight, specifically raising funds to complete the $488,000 twostorey building which now stands proud behind the Old School Arts Centre. It will provide additional capacity to meet the needs of Raglan’s growing community, from clayshed downstairs to an impressive performance space upstairs.

There’s just $90,000 to go, sighs Suzanne, who’s been leading fundraising efforts now for six years and – along with a team of dedicated, art-loving volunteers – is looking forward to this new creative hub opening by next Easter.

Museum volunteers time travel back to Raglan’s past

aking a step back in time is all in a day’s work for Raglan and District Museum volunteers Barbara Day, Cynthia Tucker and Robyn Riddle.

They say volunteering at the museum is varied and everything they do is like touching a little piece of history.

“You get a real sense of continuity and of community identity. It’s not just about the here and now, it’s also the development of the history of Raglan,” Robyn says.

“It’s a great opportunity to give back something to a community that’s very good to live in,” Barbara says.

It was local farmer Harvey Wright who started a museum of sorts back in the 1950s in his home and many of the current museum’s pieces come from this collection.

The ‘public’ museum started life in a room in the town hall in 1970 and moved to what was the old fire station on Wainui Rd in 1982. The current museum was built on this same location in 2010 and opened its doors at the end of 2011.

Unlike Barbara and Robyn whose history in Raglan starts with them, Cynthia is from an old Ruapuke farming family and both her parents volunteered at the museum in the 1970s.

Cynthia has been volunteering at the museum for the past 15 years and has had fun unearthing

interesting artefacts from the higgledy-piggledy storage at an old building in Wi Neera St – a favourite was an Egyptian necklace.

She’s played a huge role in organising and recording the artefacts the museum has been gifted over the years, most of which now live in an orderly store room at the museum.

This makes it much easier to put together a new exhibition, which the three say is a favourite part of volunteering at the museum.

Barbara moved to Raglan over 40 years ago and began volunteering in 2014. She set to work organising the paper archives and has had fun getting to know Raglan’s history in this way.

“I was really interested to learn how people lived,” she says.

She found horticulture show certificates for the Bregman family with wins for largest marrow, five straight carrots and best cured ham to name a few.

It’s little pieces of history like this that give an insight into how people socialised back in a time where coming together as a community was a big effort, but also a very big deal in what was once a very isolated town surrounded by hard-to reach farms, Barbara says.

Robyn is one of the newest volunteers and one of her very first jobs entailed matching numbers and photos to the artefacts from various collections, including settlers’ household objects, telephone exchange pieces and a collection from a soldier returning from the war.

“I had to take out each object and clean it; I really got to know each piece,” she says.

She also worked with the agricultural implements which seemed like just rusty metal to her until former Ruapuke farmer Maurice Trolove was able to cast his eye over the collection and identify the ‘mysterious’ objects.

six-piece Raglan roots reggae band headed north last week to the glitz and glamour of the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards at Spark Arena – and while they missed out on a Tui trophy, Lost Tribe Aotearoa were “pretty stoked” to be finalists at the televised red carpet event.

“It doesn’t get much bigger than this,” the largerthan-life Tux Severne told the Chronicle. “We didn’t win but we met a lot of (cool) people.”

And the band got to perform on stage at the end of the show with Northland musician Troy Kingi who “deservedly” won the best roots artist category, says Tux. While he and the rest of the tribe – pretty much all “cuzzie-bros” now based in Raglan – didn’t really expect a win after only 18 months touring together, they felt well accepted by long-established artists in the music industry.

“Maybe another year,” Tux says of that elusive Tui award.

Lost Tribe have performed 50-odd gigs all over the North Island – including at the Yotty – in the past year, he says, and plan next year to tour the South Island then head to the Gold Coast where they have a following through radio and Spotify.

“Our songs have had two to three millon views on YouTube,” Tux adds.

The band includes guitarists/vocalists Tux and Ben Aves who grew up jamming together in a shed in Taupo, lead vocalist Jesse Biddle, Vince David from Raglan Tattoo on bass, Boyd Dixon from Stendy Electrical on drums, and music teacher Nicky Keys and/or ‘Christafari’ on keyboards.

They’re grateful for the guidance they’ve had from Music Managers Forum NZ and for their unexpected rise to success which led last year to a Mai FM Big Break Competition win with their debut song ‘Irie’.

They’ve already put out a four-track EP and the next big milestone is a soon-to-be-released debut album.

Raglan Kindergarten earns top Enviroschools Green-Gold ranking

aglan Kindergarten’s environmental status just went up another notch recently achieving the top Enviroschools Green-Gold status.

In the presentation lunch recently an Enviroschools representative called Raglan Kindergarten “enviroschools on steroids”.

Head teacher Isabel Crawforth says the award is a credit to the wider community’s environmental actions which inspire Raglan Kindergarten on their own journey.

“This is a lovely community to work alongside and the children get to build a relationship with the place.

We work in a community that is always evolving and we are able to evolve alongside them.”

Recognition as an Enviroschool comes in three stages - bronze, through to silver and the top award the rare green-gold.

A nationwide programme, Enviroshools supports early childhood centres and schools in their journey to long-term sustainability. Students are encouraged to connect with and explore the environment, then plan, design and take action in their local places in collaboration with their communities.

One of the ongoing enviro community projects the kindergarten is involved in is Taunga Kereru, a working permaculture farm run by Rick Thorpe and Liz Stanway.

For the past four years a group of senior students visit the farm once a week and spend time getting introduction to food resilience and permaculture in a very hands-on way.

Isabel says the students get to experience the farm in a very unstructured way, see the change in seasons and how that affects the farm, and learn about bugs, plants and growing food.

“We discovered that not only were our children learning new things but our parent and whaanau helpers were also getting a lot of learning out of the visits.”

Raglan Kindergarten have a few current projects on the go – they have nearly finished their rain water run and have started to expand their worm farm capacity – after some community advice and support from Xtreme Zero Waste.

“This is such an inspiring community to be in and it’s so supportive of anything we want to do to help children to learn about sustainability,” Isabel says.

Upmarket Raglan sheds named NZ’s first ‘Building of the Year’

ewly built Raglan homes have been picking up a fair swag of awards lately – and now even a couple of commercial sheds on the outskirts of town have been singled out for a national plaudit.

The Wainui Construction entry ‘Two Sheds in Raglan’ has been named as the Building of the Year in the inaugural Colorsteel Awards, a win that gives the Raglan company a $25,000 media spend to up its profile.

Hosted by New Zealand Steel, the new awards are designed to celebrate roofing and construction excellence across the country and include categories for Roofer of the Year and Young Roofer of the Year.

Media personality and builder Peter Wolfkamp said the Raglan build – at Nau Mai Industrial Park bordering the Raglan-Hamilton state highway – stood out to the five-strong judging panel because of its innovative design.

“It has been built with versatility in mind, so the spaces can be matched

to the needs of future tenants,” he said. “The simple details provide a functional and artistic element that transforms a ‘shed’ into an upmarket commercial destination.”

Hayley Vink, a representative of Wainui Construction, added: “This was a great project which really pushed the boundaries of the architecture expected in an industrial area … it was exciting to see what we could produce thanks to clever detailing and interesting material.”

One of the sheds incorporates an upstairs apartment with a deck.

Hayden Vink, also of Wainui Construction, told the Chronicle the Two Sheds build was a team effort. While Wainui Construction project-managed the job, he singled out ShedBoss Waikato and Raglanowned Next Level Roofing for their contributions to a successful build.

He added the media package would “help build our brand, which is all good, but we’re just a small Raglan company”.

eautiful sunny Sundays make choosing to spend the day inside discussing how to solve our housing crisis a tough choice, but up to 70 people did exactly that, in engaged, interactive sessions at the Conversations about Housing hui at the Town Hall on Sunday November 3.

Our local affordable housing project group, aka WRAP (Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable housing Project) hosted the day long forum, presenting panellists from Raglan and beyond to provide insights to other projects happening in our region and further afield that could work here in Raglan.

Panellists included architects, planners, designers, builders (of tiny homes), eco-design, papakāinga, Maori land development and community energy specialists, and representatives from all age groups in town, all with a passion for innovative design and new ways of delivering housing at a price that meets the need in our community.

Brad White from the Cambridge Co-housing Project shared the inspiring journey that 10 families in Cambridge have been on to build a purpose designed village of homes with shared gardens, services and community buildings. The group have developed the principles by which they will design and manage the project, their values and financial model – see https:// www.cambridgecohousing.nz/ for more information.

In today’s land price paradigm, community land trusts have proven to be a successful model to be able to secure land in perpetuity for affordable housing, separate from the market where even those on the minimum incomes can afford to rent or buy a modest home. Samantha Rose of Common Ground shared the journey to the formation of the Waikato Community Land Trust supported by the Hamilton City Council Mayoral Fund this year.

The last session of the day was led by six Year 13 students from Raglan Area School Social Studies class with a heart rending slam poetry piece from three of the girls that had most in the audience in or close to tears. They spoke about the shifted moral compass that has elevated profit making from housing above the right of all to a safe, secure, affordable place to

live. It spoke to how they feel betrayed by housing prices that mean that despite being born and raised in Raglan, they see themselves locked out of ever being able to afford to live here. The girls had incorporated the themes from a survey they had conducted at Raglan Area School of other students, so represented the collective voice of the youth in our town.

The other three students presented a model of how they envisioned we could construct a liveable, affordable solution – a neighbourhood of differing house sizes from tiny to modest 3 - 4 bedroom houses with shared gardens, orchards and walkways, where cars were consigned to a perimeter road and a single parking area on the outer edge of the development.

A multi-generational housing development where people could enter at any level, move from tiny to small, to moderate-sized and back to smaller homes as their needs changed during life. A selection of panellists followed who represented view points from young couples with beginning families and tight incomes, to the roles our older generations can play in housing solutions and their own changing needs.

It was obvious from the very first session where a young woman, in trauma about the scarcity of rentals and her desperate battle to find a place for her and her family to live after being moved out of a property in order for it to enter the online nightly rental market, to the final tear inducing poetry from the RAS students that the need for a better housing solution is urgent.

From the questions and feedback from the audience, it was clear that there is a preference for connected neighbourhood developments that value the needs of the occupants above the current market model of dividing land into the smallest lots possible and building as many separated dwellings as possible. The many models that were discussed all provided shared, connected green spaces, gardens, self-sufficiency of water energy harvesting while creating housing that through excellence in design provided extremely low or zero energy consumption, passive heating and warm, dry places to live.

WRAP set out to gather information from the day – the key themes that flowed through in order to incorporate them into the development of an affordable housing design project in 2020. A report of the outcomes from the hui will be completed before the end of December and made available for comment. Plans are underway to have funding secured for the project to continue into design phase in 2020. WRAP’s next priority will be to get a website up and running so progress, updates and information can be shared more easily.

WORD BLIND AND DYSLEXIA Difficulties in reading aloud amongst some adults was first recognised in 1877 by a German Professor, Rudolf Berlin, and originally called ‘word blind’. He also noticed one or more other symptoms such as poor word and letter recognition, spelling and writing, including the reversal of symbols in maths and written language.

Similar abnormalities were observed in children doing well in most subjects except reading and writing, despite having no visual or hearing problems, injury or disease.

The syndrome was renamed Dyslexia in line with medical terminology, meaning ‘faulty speech’ but covering a whole range of language disabilities, identifying speech sounds and relating them to letters and words (decoding). Learning problems remain largely under the jurisdiction of the medical profession until half way through the last century.

REVERSAL OF SYMBOLS (STREPHSYMBOLIA) New medical jargon emerged such as Strephsymbolia meaning directional problems left/right, up/down and mirror imaging and Dyscalculia, referring difficulties with maths concepts like counting, and calculating size and quantities.

Not all reading experts agreed that Dyslexia existed, describing it as a pseudo medical diagnosis driven by middle class parents as an excuse for their child’s learning difficulties. Speech problems are sometimes the first signs of Dyslexia in young children and other learning difficulties become

more apparent when they start school. In the past the children were often labelled dumb, lazy, or unteachable and frequently humiliated for making mistakes. Not all health professionals, teachers or parents understood why some intelligent children had poor language skills or maths concepts.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY Interest in Dyslexia spread to other European countries and the United States, with England becoming a leading advocate for research into why some seemingly bright children failed to read and write. Dyslexic and Word Blind Institutions appeared in different counties and worked together with Education Authorities to address learning difficulties particularly in literacy. Modern brain scanning techniques have revealed that the brains of people with Dyslexia are ‘wired up’ differently to the average person.

However many critics were still in denial.

PHONICS OR READ FOR MEANING TEACHING METHODS The next great debate was how to address the literacy problem. By 1950’s most countries used a wide range of approaches for all children. Unfortunately not all educationalists could agree as to whether children should be taught the sounds of letters (phonics) and individual words first, or the whole sentence system which involved a certain amount of guess work from the meaning of the text by looking at picture books with simple captions. Those with the ability to sound out words, visualize and remember words, quickly learned regardless of which system was used.

Meanwhile across the board between 10% and 20% of the population continued to struggle with basic reading, writing and

spelling skills. Dyslexia is found more frequently amongst males, and often runs in families. It is also quite common amongst left handed children. In New Zealand until recently there was a reluctance to label a person Dyslexic. The use of phonics was not recommended for early reading instruction.

Fortunately today there is less stigma attached to the term Dyslexia. With better diagnostics techniques and multisensory teaching methods, and acknowledging visual limitations, auditory confusion and poor coordination skills, more people can reach their full potential and avoid the struggles and humiliations of the past. Meanwhile computer technology has enabled a better understanding of learning disabilities, and many more people to become successful.

THE FUTURE The inability to visualize words in the ‘mind’s eye’, was a phenomenon which was first described in 1850 by the English psychologist Sir Francis Galton. It has remained largely unstudied until 2015 when it was called Aphantasia from the Greek ‘without imagery’.

It appears that between 1% and 3% population are unable to recall words or pictures in their mind. While many people diagnosed with dyslexia also have Aphantasia, it also occurs in people with no learning disability. The research is still in its infancy, and hopefully will shed further light to understand why certain intelligent people find reading and writing difficult.

We have come a long way since the term ‘word blind ’was described by the early pioneers of reading disabilities.

EL Networks’ latest public safety campaign highlights the potentially deadly outcome of not treating all fallen power lines as live.

The local lines company is educating the public on the correct action to take in the event of a fallen power line – particularly as a result of a car accident.

WEL’s First Response Faults and LV Lines Supervisor Hamish Thomson said the campaign centres on the slogan, ‘Down means danger’.

“All fallen lines need to be treated as live as electricity is likely still flowing through those cables.

“In recent weeks we have had some instances of people trying to go into the car/leave the car before it is safe to do so – we want to stress that the consequence of this can be deadly.”

The correct action to take if the lines come down on your vehicle is to remain inside until you are rescued or it could be fatal. If you must leave the vehicle because of fire or other immediate danger, jump away from the vehicle keeping your feet together when you land.

Vice versa, if you come across a vehicle involved in an accident where power lines have fallen, do not touch the vehicle, the lines or drive over the fallen lines, call 111.
