The Consenting Process is a RMA requirement, therefore I am an advocate for an urgent review of the RMA followed by Council processes. Note: This is a national issue. 3. Build lots and lots of new houses as fast as we can. 4. Fast build. Compared to many other international jurisdictions we take far to long to build a basic house in NZ. That needs to change. When building a house ‘time really is money’. I think it would be good to have a town wide conversation about this. What do you think? Orca is in the pink for Brunch for Breast Cancer - Pink Ribbon Fundraiser

Also at H.G Webb House, Cnr Boundary & Victoria Streets, Hamilton

MORTGAGE BROKERS Murtaghs From left - Charlotte Hartstone,Rachel Hudson, Rachel Brown, Linda Holmes and Lisa James are part of a team hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast at Orca to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

N

ine women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day and the Raglan hosts of a Pink Ribbon Breakfast reckon that’s adds up to a whole lot of women, and their families and friends who have been touched by the disease. The seven friends – Rachel Brown, Lisa James, Maddie Alexander, Rachel Hudson, Charlotte Hartstone, Angelina Muru and Linda Holmes – are hosting a brunch and auction at Orca on Saturday, May 25, from 11am–1.30pm to raise money for and awareness of breast cancer. “Everybody has got a breast cancer story to tell,” Rachel Brown says. Her own is a story of self-awareness and seeking expert advice when she turned to Google to check out what an unusual breast pain might be and decided to book an appointment with her doctor. What Google diagnosed as a rare form of breast cancer turned out to be a false alarm but she says she is glad she didn’t ignore the symptoms.

“There is a lot of information available. I realised how lucky we are to have that support from the foundation.” The hosts are hoping the Pink Ribbon brunch will appeal to men as well, and say while only a small minority of men are diagnosed with breast cancer, they are also affected when they support a loved one who is battling the disease. One of the Raglan events staunchest supporters surf star Billy Stairmand lost his mother to breast cancer in 2016 and Rachael says he was super keen to help out. Represented by his wife Liana at the brunch, the couple are donating surf related prizes to one of the themed packages which will go under the hammer of auctioneer Julie Hanna. “Families are just as much a part of the breast cancer journey as the loved one battling the disease. We want to remind guys they are really welcome to come along – even though it’s a pink theme it’s not just for the girls. There will be something for everyone,’ she says.

Guest speaker Sacha Coburn, the coowner of Coffee Culture, breast cancer survivor and keynote speaker about personal and professional leadership, has donated her time to the event. Her keynotes have been described as part concert, part musical journey, part stand-up comedy and part sermon, and she is known for delivering her hard-hitting message with vulnerability, authenticity and humour. The money raised from the Pink Ribbon brunch helps fund innovative projects by some of our country’s top researchers, and supports patients and their families during treatment and recovery. Tickets are selling out quick and can be purchased at Orca or via the Facebook page Brunch for Breast Cancer - Pink Ribbon Fundraiser. Included in the $25 ticket price is a complimentary beverage, shared savoury and sweet platters and one ticket for the raffle. Janine Jackson

The couple are aerialists (aerial strap experts) - strap ends are wrapped around hands and wrists to enable performers to do holds, twists, rolls and manoeuvres, similar to men’s rings in gymnastics – and say the classes are awesome for strength-building, flexibility, balance, wellbeing, coordination, spatial awareness and left and right brain function. “People don’t realise how much strength they are using when they are having fun,” Jessica says. Born in Colombia in the 1980s - a far cry from the family friendly coastal lifestyle the couple enjoy in Raglan, Jair discovered his love of acrobatics as a kid growing up amid the Bogotá slums; street performance and the circus was a way out of that world. He spent six years training at Circo Para Todos in Cali and Circo Ciudad in Bogotá and went on to perform around the world. “I always knew I wanted to travel around the world and meet people. Circus performing helped me achieve that,” Jair says. Originally from Te Kuiti, Jessica made the move from dance to aerial straps when she met Jair in 2009, when they were both performing on a cruise ship in Singapore. “Aerialists were always treated better and paid more on the cruise ships. Aerial performance just has that wow factor – it’s something different,” she says.

Realising the potential for dancers to earn more money, the pair founded Freedom2Fly in London in 2013 to train dancers in the aerial performing arts. They made the move to New Zealand last year and have since tailored their aerial classes and workshops to cater for all ages and fitness level. While Jair still travels to perform during the week, the pair are holding classes in Raglan on Saturdays at the Raglan Area School gym. Heavily pregnant with the couple’s second child, Jessica is still hands-on instructing alongside her husband and she gets a lot of satisfaction from spreading the joys of aerial performing. “I love seeing the underdogs get really good and doing things they didn’t think they could do,” she says. The five classes catering for a range of ages - Flying Fit for ages 14 plus and is aimed at increasing upper body and core strength, F2F youth class follows for children aged 7-12 and combines circus, aerial skills and fun. F2F open class follows the same format at the youth class but for 13 years and older, Aerial Hoop and Silks class is heavily focused on building a repertoire of moves in aerials and is for all ages including adults, and for the tots

there is the Mini Muscles class for two to sixyear-olds. Janine Jackson For more information contact Jessica at jess@freedom2fly.co.nz, 022 514 1766, Instagram @freedom2flynz or check out the website freedom2fly.co.nz.

Open Men's division winner Luke Cederman. Image: Col / Surf2Surf.com

hirty-six-year old Luke Cederman has triumphed over several up and coming junior surfers half his age to claim backto-back titles at the Backdoor Oceanbridge Manu Bay Pro. The final day of the event was contested at the backup venue of Ruapuke Beach on Sunday, May 5, with the day starting out in fun 1.0m waves and variable winds before the tide dropped out in the afternoon. Cederman surfed to an impressive 15 point heat total in the final. Knowing that one, or if you were lucky two turns, were going to be all that was possible in the low tide conditions, Cederman took to the air on his forehand. His best turn came in at 8.87 points for a big air reverse. “Well, I was a little sceptical on backing anything up because I am usually a one hit wonder” said Cederman of his title defence chances. “But yeah, nah, I managed to do it and beat all these little kids which was good”. “The waves were less than desirable so my strategy in the final was to do two turns or an air and I pulled a good air on that wave and claimed it” he added. Cederman being his candid self was quick to point out his success at Raglan over the past two years. “I am actually four finals in a row at Raglan with two wins and the only person that has beaten me is Billy Stairmand” he added. Raglan based Kai Woolf won her first event in the Open Women’s Division with the 17-year-old goofy foot surfer coming out on top in the tricky conditions.

“I am so happy, I came in from the heat and broke a big smile, I’m so excited. I had a really bad start to the event on the first day so I am stoked to come back with the win” said Woolf who started the final with a 7.5 point ride and never looked back. Woolf is a student at the Raglan Surf Academy and has been surfing Ruapuke on a number of occasions but she noted how hard the conditions were for the final despite having surfed the beach often. Raglan brigades newest female graduate proves size is no barrier to fighting fires

R

aglan Volunteer Fire Brigade’s newest female recruit in 12 years Lisa Conwell is proof that size, age and gender are no obstacle when it comes to fighting fires.

“He told me the station needed more recruits and that I should join,” she says. That was six months ago with Lisa starting her training regime at the station with various drills and exercises - new recruits also attend call outs but they have to remain on the truck. It’s the feeling of family support at the Raglan brigade that Lisa says is really important and helps bolster spirits through tough times. “We’ve got a great crew. Everybody has got your back and they’re people who care for each other.” Responding to an emergency at a moment’s notice, any time of the day or night is all part and parcel of the role and Lisa says the crew rely heavily on their own families to keep the home fires burning. “We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our family backing us up. My family have been on our way into town and the siren goes off, and it will either be a few hours delay or they go without me.” Raglan brigade has four females volunteering as firefighters or in support roles. There are over 11,000 volunteer firefighters in New Zealand, around 8000 are from urban brigades, and 3500 rural. Raglan is an urban brigade with 20 operational volunteer firefighters and four operational support. Unlike their rural counterparts who respond to vegetation fires, structure fires and car accidents, the urban brigades have a higher level of training to respond to fires, medical, hazardous substance and other incidents. janine Jacskon

But don’t let her size fool you, the 48-year-old, 5’2” dynamo recently graduated as an operational volunteer firefighter after a gruelling seven-day examination at the NZ Fire Service Auckland training centre. “It was intense to say the least, I am lucky to have a good level of fitness and just sometimes it is good to be small as we had some very tight spaces to squeeze through, which made it difficult for some of the men with their breathing apparatus gear on,” she says. The examination included responding to mock fires with another recruit, kitted out in full gear and breathing apparatus, which weighs around 10-kilograms, and dragging a 20-kilogram drum. Weighing a mere 51-kilograms herself, the former runner-up Miss Universe 2002 is no stranger to lifting heavy things and many will recognise her from her work as a personal trainer at the Raglan Gym. It was at the gym that Lisa’s journey to becoming a firefighter started when she was convinced by Raglan’s chief fire officer Kevin Holmes to join the brigade.

HOMEOPATHY

D

id you know Osteopathy was developed in the 19th century by an American physician and civil war surgeon by the name of Andrew Still after his wife and three daughters passed away from spinal meningitis and the orthodox medical system could not save them. Osteopathy has since spread across the world, gaining popularity throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In New Zealand Osteopathy is a recognised health care profession and is one of ACC’s preferred professions to treat injuries. “At Nikau Osteo, we take a holistic approach to health and work within the muscles, ligaments, bones, abdominal organs and cranial systems to facilitate to body’s ability to self-regulate and heal.” Said Russell Gaddes from Nikau Osteo.

Russell studied an undergraduate degree and Masters of Osteopathy at Auckland, New Zealand and is registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand. In order to practice osteopathy in New Zealand, you must be registered. This ensures the practitioner is held accountable to the highest standard governed here in New Zealand, keeping patients safety front of mind. Whether its Nikau Osteo, or any others – you should always ensure your osteopath is registered and legally operating in New Zealand. This information is public, and can be found at www.osteopathiccouncil.org.nz Osteopathy can benefit people who suffer from aches, pains and injuries. Nikau Osteo is registered with ACC which enables Russell to offer subsidized treatments to patients who have had injuries in the workplace, at home, in the gym or on the sports field. Regular osteopathic treatment

is a great way to ensure your body is in its optimal alignment to prevent re-injury and to give you the most out of every day. Nikau Osteo is based a few minutes out of Raglan at Nikau Sanctuary. You will find them in a Mongolian Yurt off Maungatawhiri Rd. Nikau Sanctuary looks out to beautiful native bush, filled with tui and keruru singing in the background; the perfect setting for healing and recovery. "Also, we appreciate the hard work and contribution by those in the public sector, with that considered, we have special rates for fire, police, ambulance, teachers, doctors, nurses and those in other public sector positions. Contact us for more information. " Said Russell. Nikau Osteo is offering a 50% discount for all first-time clients - $35 if you are seeking a standard consultation or $15 for an injury covered by ACC.
