Dear Editor I am concerned at the continuing approaches by neighbours demanding severe tree trimming and topping of native trees on my property to "improve" their views, at my expense!

I purchased my property in Raglan specifically for its peaceful, tranquil setting, with native trees surrounding a lovey old original bungalow.

Sadly this environment has been eroded by frequent requests for excess cut backs of said trees which I have been reluctant to do but with neighbourly relationships on the line I have, in conjunction with an experienced local arborist, undertaken appropriate trimming of and removal of dead and toxic (self-sown) privet last year

which I will continue on a similar program this year.

An irony not lost on me is that further to the request to "trim" an adjacent tree on the neighbouring boundary (at my expense), has been the neighbours frequent watering by a sprinkler system, used constantly through the dry months, when water restrictions ensued last year during a very dry Raglan summer to keep a very green lawn!

It appears some Raglan residents have an expectation their wishes for "unobstructive views" should come before other residents quiet enjoyment of their own tree lined properties and even before the raw beauty and protection of Raglan's enduring "Green" ethos.

Dear Editor As a new resident in Raglan, I am wondering about the intersection of Opotoru Rd with Tahuna and Wainui Rd's especially as the sub-division develops. Are we planning a round-about and if so will it take place while we supposedly have

fewer tourists? Is it shovel ready, for central government help?

Dear Editor Foodwaste and Car Fumes It’s no surprise the subject of foodwaste surfaces time and again in Raglan. What does come as a surprise is how few of us connect the problem with an actual answer; just stop wasting food. It really is that simple.

It all starts on our own plates, in our own fridges, and with our own habits. It’s fantastic that Xtreme Zero Waste offer a foodwaste collection, although our household has never needed or used the service. At least it gives people the feeling that some good is being done. But as we all know about collecting our recyclables, it’s not the real answer. In both cases the only real answer is not to produce the waste in the first place.

So next time you’re clearing your plates into the foodwaste bin, ask yourself if it could be saved for tomorrow’s lunch. Or remember when prepping your next meal, and don’t make so much. There’s no reason any of the food in your cupboard or fridge, food that you spent good money buying, should end up as waste.

The compost can take care of any absolute scraps, and pretty soon the only thing

in your foodwaste bin will be bones (if you’re a meat eater).

On a seperate note - has anybody else noticed how many people are leaving their cars running and engines idling when stopped? At the lookouts and parks, at the supermarkets, pretty much anywhere around town... never used to be a problem, but now it seems to be happening all the time, everywhere? Shame enough we’ve become a nation of excessively large cars, apparently now we’ve forgotten how to turn them off… choosing instead to chug through more fossil fuel, dump carbon, and fume out those around us.

Apologies to any of you who I’ve offended, by walking up to your car window and quizzing the motives of your actions, but it’s just horrible breathing vehicle exhaust.

Like foodwaste, the problem comes down to not being aware or concerned about our actions, or the impact they have on the environment or the people around us. So… for anyone up to the challenge, maybe try establishing some new habits that will be helpful for all of us.

Artist collective finds Inner Space L ocal artists join forces to showcase an exhibition at Chris Meek’s studio on Cross Street starting Friday, May 28 at 5.30pm.

The five emerging artists Annika Clover, Seb Hart, Ziggy Knuiman, Korrin Bevan and Ciaran Lannon will present a selection of their works in a group exhibition called Inner Space.

There is a surreal quality to their works; as a collective the young artists all share a sense of the absurd in their paintings and illustrations, which feature tortured, macabre, sombre and strange looking depictions of humanity.

From vibrant use of colour to just black ink, the range of work on show provides a feast for the eye and the intricate ways in which they respond to their subject matter makes you want to take a second look.

Like many struggling artists, the five all find ways to make a crust outside of their art; Annika runs vegetarian/vegan café Clover, Korrin works at Aloha Sushi and Ciaran, who is Wellington based, Tokoroa-born, is a student.

“It’s awesome to have an exhibition alongside some of my favourite artists who are also some of my very good friends,” Korrin says.

They describe their creative process as a sense of purging the ideas swirling around in their heads into a drawing or painting.

“I’m inspired by life and everything around me but what inspires me more is the line that I’ve just drawn; each line inspires the next,” Seb says.

Like many visual artists they struggle to express themselves in words but say their artwork speaks volumes.

“I find it so much easier to express my feelings through my art and I hope people get a sense of that when they look at my paintings,” Annika says.

The group are thrilled to have the support of renowned sculptor Chris Meek and the use of his studio.

“We are grateful that Chris is so open to supporting young artists; he is very generous with his time and letting us exhibit at his studio.

It’s also great to have local brewer Workshop Brewery for supporting us on opening night with their fine brews,” Annika says.

n the last two weeks Police have received reports of five family harm matters, two burglaries, a stolen vehicle and two other dishonesty related offences.

Two people are being prosecuted for drink driving and there has been one reported crash on SH 23.

Of significance we are appealing for information regarding a missing person. The man in his forties notified a friend on Sunday, May 2, that he was going to fish off the rocks at Papanui Point and would be returning that afternoon. The man's vehicle was later located in the Papanui Point carpark and his belongings located on the beach. Search and Rescue have been searching the area extensively but have

Anna Hawkins releases 'Dreamer' - concert in Raglan Legal Advice with DTI

Anna is set to perform several intimate shows following the release of her latest folk inspired album Dreamer which showcases Anna’s songwriting and haunting voice.

Six years previously, Anna first travelled across the globe to work alongside Pawel and other world class musicians in Poland, London and Israel. This daring move brought her recording dreams to life with albums Journey On, Bold Brave & Beautiful and Divine, the latter of which earned five weeks in the NZ album charts with a song clocking over 1.5 million views on youtube for its music video filmed in Israel.

After moving back to New Zealand Dreamer was completed with singersongwriter Luke Thompson producing and Nic Mander’s mixing and recording vocals at Parachute Studios. Four years in the making Dreamer features a talented and eclectic group of musicians from Poland, Israel and New Zealand. While the album is mainly guitar driven it also includes a string orchestra, cello, fiddle, percussion and keys alongside instruments such as the mountain dulcimer, melodica, ukulele and tin whistle with some foot stomping, hand clapping, whistling and atmospheric vocals thrown in for good measure.

Personal liability for employment law breaches

M

any business owners, directors and senior employees may not be aware that they can be found personally liable for employment law breaches, including claims for unpaid wages, holiday pay and remedies for personal grievances. An upward trend of applications

by MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employer) against individuals for payment of penalties and owed monies serves as a warning not only to legal entities, but individuals, to ensure employment law obligations are being met.

The Employment Relations Act 2000 provides power to Labour Inspectors to apply for a penalty against a person who is involved in employment law breaches. A Labour Inspector or an employee may also claim for a default in payment of wages, holiday pay or other money owed. The Act sets out when a person is “involved in the breach” and this includes when a person has: �

aided, abetted, counselled or procured the breach; or

�

has induced, whether by threats or promises, the breach; or

�

has been induced in any way, directly or indirectly, knowingly concerned in, or party to, the breach; or

�

has conspired with others to effect the breach.

The liability extends to “officers” of an entity, which includes: directors, partners, persons holding similar positions of power, and persons in a position to exercise significant influences over the management and administration of an entity.

In a recent decision, Labour Inspector v Raj Kiwi Limited, the Employment Relations Authority found a former owner of a company personally liable for payment of penalties totalling $70,000 and unpaid wage entitlements of over $26,000. When attributing liability to the former owner and sole director, the Authority noted that he was in a position to exercise significant influence over the management of Raj Kiwi and did in fact exercise such control.

For those officers who do exercise influence and control in the decisions for a legal entity, this provides further incentive to ensure that employment law obligations are being met. The implications of a breach could not only mean an order for payment against the entity, but also against the individuals involved.

n Sunday 18 April the Raglan Town Hall hosted a Rusty Player event. The event was promoted and sponsored by Orchestras Central Trust, an organisation that delivers orchestral music experiences in the Waikato through the Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra, Rusty Players, Youth Orchestras Waikato and OCT Ensemble.

About 35 players turned up on the day, a few locals, Hamiltonians and others from as far away as Morrinsville and Paeroa. They came together in the morning to practice the music in their orchestral sections of strings and wind. Some players mentioned they felt “rusty” at first, but supported by the old hands, the development (and the musicians’ enjoyment) over the two practice sessions was obvious even to an untutored ear.

During the early afternoon the whole orchestra came together under the baton of Catherine Polglase and eventually an audience of around 25 was treated to three well-known

pieces: Suite no 2 from The Water Music by Handel, the Adagio from Spartacus by Khachaturian (the theme from the 1980’s television drama series The Onedin Line) and an arrangement of Rod Stewart’s iconic song Sailing.

The out-of-towners in the orchestra were flattering about our lovely town hall, and enjoyed the Wharf fish n chip lunch too (30+ separate parcels!). A highlight for one young man who was there with his family, was an invitation to join in as the cymbal player. After the practices, he ended up hitting the cymbal at exactly the right place in Theme from The Onedin Line. Rusty Players Orchestra is a sometime regular event around the Waikato, further information from their Facebook page and website: www.orchestras.org.nz. This looked like very good fun indeed - I wished I had a dusty instrument in my cupboard.

s the whistle blows for the start of the 2021 season of the ANZ Premiership, ANZ is looking to help netball teams in Raglan get back on the court this season and is putting out a nationwide call to recognise and reward netball’s Local Legends.

After one of the toughest seasons ever for netball clubs and school teams last year, ANZ wants to find and celebrate the netball community’s Local Legends - the greatest supporters whose time and energy keep local netball alive through the good times and the tough.

Netball’s Local Legends could be anyone from diehard supporters who turn up week in, week out; or parents that taxi their kids to games every weekend; or coaches who are constantly working behind the scenes. ANZ wants to get behind their commitment to the game and will fund a project that will make their netball contribution easier up to the value of $15,000 plus a $1000 cash prize for the Legend themselves, as a thank you for everything they do in the community.

For the 10th year running, ANZ is also offering netball grants to schools and netball clubs throughout Raglan to help them take their game to the next level. The ANZ Netball Grants programme has helped the country's grassroots netballers with everything from new training gear and uniforms, to spruced up netball facilities. Over the past decade, the Grants have totalled more than $1.2 million.

An update from Raglan Netball Club:

A

fter our netball club being closed down due to Covid-19, we have come back excited to get this season started. We are a new committee with the same passion for netball, ready to take our club to the next level and also working hard to ensure that it is a success.

It has taken a lot of time and commitment to get the club up and going again. The support from our community has definitely been encouraging.

This year the club has catered to the women. We have a women's team that has been training for the past couple months to take our club through this year's season. I've had the pleasure to witness these women and their trainings.

It is also heart warming to see not only new women joining the club, but past members who have also returned. With all of this Raglan Netball Club has many things installed for the future of our club. We are looking forward to meeting more passionate netballers out in our community.

Raglan Football Club season has kicked off

T

he football season has kicked off to a flying start with 23 teams playing matches on the Papahua reserve, and away games within Waikato.

The club committee comprises of: Luca Grilli, Amy Hanna, Jo Clarke, Liz Hosking, and Chris Wallis. A huge amount of work goes into the running of the club. New members recruited to the committee include: John Brzeski, Shelley Wilson, Kelley Marra, Katie Lowes and Haydee Gosling. Massive thanks to everyone

that helped with the working bee, cleaning kit, sheds, pumping balls and painting the pitch lines. Without this input the games can’t take place. The turnout for coach training at Te Uku Hall was tremendous, a sign of amazing parental support and dedication to team sport for young people in Raglan.

This year a new team joins Raglan Area School for training. The Spratz changed their name to the Megalodons, and the ratio of boy/ girl teams approaches 50/50.

As a community we truly care about issues facing us and love to find solutions to tricky things that often create New Zealand wide changes (remember the Plastic Free Raglan Project!). Whether we are feeding our families, or our visitors, we know good healthy food is important. Imagine if healthy food was easily available and affordable for everyone, where growing and sharing good food was a normal part of everyday life. The Whāingaroa Environment Centre, working together with our community, wants to make this vision a reality.

"Kai in our Community" is a new project led by Whāingaroa Environment Centre. The aim of this project is to identify how we get our food, is it affordable, and what can we do so that everyone can enjoy healthy local food. We want to explore what people are already doing in the food space and how we can work together to make getting and enjoying healthy local kai the norm in Whāingaroa. We know there are many fabulous individuals and groups tackling issues around food access, we send heartfelt thank you to all the work you do, and we would love to hear from you.

With your help we want to: Find out what is already happening in Whāingaroa Identify the food gaps and possible solutions Visualise what we want as a community and figure out what the next steps will be

he Julie Lamb Outftit took their first step on their supersonic The Barmy Jarmies tour with a sizzling show at the Newtown Community Centre in Pōneke last Saturday and on May 22nd they will visit The Yot club in Raglan.

A key element to the Julie Lamb Outfit way of life is their community focussed, funforward values, making for performances that are more than just funk-pop tunes and horn sections. As bandleader Julie Lamb herself says, "Mischief, stories, sentiment, groove" are the four words that come to mind, and I'd say that's what gives their octet an extra sparkle on their live tour stops.

Opinion: Is this a heathier option?

I

F you’re anything like me, you may be reeling with the number of major announcements being made by the Government with no detail behind them.

The biggest of them was a total change to our health system on April 21.

While many may applaud the decision to create one health entity which will come in three parts — Health NZ (to replace the DHBs), a Maori health authority and public health authority — the proclamation lacked how it’s going to work.

Labour says their decision has been made due to treaty obligations. Yet what the Government has announced is very different to what was recommended by the NZ Health and Disability Review.

The extent of it caught everyone in the health sector on the hop — from local GPs to the DHBs. While the report promoted eight DHBs, the move to totally dump them wasn’t expected.

Immediately there were questions — the biggest being … what will it cost?

Among the many I have, what does it mean for health services in our rural communities?

Access is already hard for rural communities.

Wait times for doctors can be up to two weeks or more, if non-urgent, as local GPs and medical centres are under huge pressure. Add to this, the huge shortage of rural GPs nationwide with no long-term fix on the horizon.

Many of our rural folk with health issues needing specialist services cannot get to urban providers for several reasons — no car, no driver’s licence, no public transport, work commitments and the hours of time needed to do so, the cost of fuel to get there and back.

Meanwhile, diagnosing serious or terminal illnesses is delayed, especially when people are already arriving at their GPs with ‘acute’ symptoms in the first place.

On April 30, I attended a national Rural Health conference hosted at Wairakei.

The health professionals who work in rural communities gathered to discuss methods of delivery and support needed.

There are some really good models out there that can be replicated across the country, keeping the tools in rural community hands and working in networks based on locality.

I continue to admire the services of Mobile Health and the many organisations who work hard to service rural areas.

Any new system design needs to have input from the very people who do the work.

The Ministry of Health has been restructured five times in 10 years, the last in 2018. How many times do we need to change the name, letterhead and car signage, restructure staff or make them redundant?

As our health spokesperson, Dr Shane Reti said in a statement on April 30: “New Zealand’s rural communities face unique health challenges, but Labour has failed to put forward how its health restructure will benefit our small rural communities and their GPs. “In any major merger or centralisation it’s the small communities who lose their voice and, it’s widely known that already, our rural communities are losing out.”

And that is unacceptable.

Waikato Regional Council advises that under Resource Consent 124871 spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months.

Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan and include (but are not limited to): alligator weed, Manchurian wild rice, sagittaria, Senegal tea, spartina and yellow flag iris. Herbicides to be used are haloxyfop, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr. Application method is location dependent and may be by helicopter, gun and hose, mistblower or knapsack.

The local, annual Whaingaroa Hoe is approaching! Hosted by the Whaingaroa Whānau Hoe Waka Club, this event is a celebration of Waka Ama (Outrigger Canoeing) on our beautiful harbour. We would like to advise that this event attracts paddlers from all over Aotearoa and we can expect up to 1000 paddlers, plus friends and whānau.

This will mean extra traffic and also waka trailers around town. Please take care. It is a fantastic spectacle and we advise watching the events from the Bow Street Jetty, the footbridge, the wharf and along Cliff Street.

Huge thanks to our club members and other volunteers for making this event happen.

Notice is hereby given that Waikato District Council, for allowing Hamilton Car Club to hold a motorsport event, will temporarily close a tar-sealed section of Ruapuke Road, Raglan, between Te Mata Rd and Waimaunga Rd, on Sunday 30 May 2021 from 7am to 5pm.

For the period of closure of the road, the following provision will be made for ordinary vehicular traffic which would otherwise use the roads.

The road section will be manned at intersections by clearly identifiable marshals equipped with radio communication and access will be provided in the event of an emergency.

This notice is given pursuant to the Tenth Schedule of the local Government Act 1974.
