T

o the editor. I was recently involved in a serious cycling accident in Raglan when I was hit from behind by a motor vehicle towing a boat, and was knocked unconscious, suffering concussion and multiple injuries as well as a hospital stay. The accident occurred through no fault of my own and I am incredibly lucky to be alive today.

In this regard, I would like to bring to your attention an area of Raglan which is used frequently by the general public but which is, unfortunately, a serious accident just waiting to happen.

The pedestrian walkway outside SuperValue has no barriers, wheel stops or drainage gutter in place to prevent a motor vehicle from lurching forward from the angled parking along Bow Street, directly into the path of pedestrians walking here. Such an incident will almost certainly result in tragedy or serious injury to pedestrians using this walkway.

Compare this situation to the recently upgraded car parks outside the Orca restaurant and the Joyce Petchell car park (near the visitor information centre) in which numerous wheel stops have been added by the Waikato District Council. Why have these wheel stops been installed? To protect members of the public from being hit by a motor vehicle!

Why then is no such protection afforded to pedestrians using the walkway outside SuperValue? This is clearly an inherently dangerous situation as pedestrians are relying solely on drivers taking due care when parking, with no physical controls in place whatsoever to provide protection and safety. Just one moment of distraction by a driver with their foot on the car’s accelerator may result in the death of, or serious injury to, a pedestrian(s). Imagine the carnage that could occur here over a busy long weekend or holiday period – and the resultant outcry by Raglanites.

No pedestrian should ever have to be exposed to this type of danger. All that is required is that car stops or barriers be added to the angled parking bays, as a matter of urgency. *Editor's note: This letter was written to draw attention to the safety issues around SuperValue supermarket parking and adjacent road, the author's intent is not to implicate the supermarket or imply that they are responsible in any way.

n the last two weeks, Raglan Police have received reports of six family harm incidents, fourteen thefts including seven burglaries and another two prosecutions related to drink driving.

Keep up the good work, keep sending in your evidence of the ‘boy racer activity’ and we will keep impounding their vehicles.

A reminder that security on your home, including alarms and cameras, not only protects your home, but also the community.

A local thief was caught on CCTV footage trying to break into a home; within the hour he was brought into custody and further stolen property was recovered.

ACC are currently subsidising Quad Bike safety equipment – if you have a farm or business and have a quad bike or ATV, I highly recommend looking into this. Visit acc.co.nz and click on “control the roll” campaign.

SH 23 between Raglan and Te Uku has been identified as the most ‘high risk’ stretch of road in the Raglan area. Statistically this area has, by far, the most vehicles crashes. Please drive safely, allow traffic to pass if travelling slow; if passing, do so safely, and drive to the conditions.

aglan’s Point Boardriders Club has claimed the 2022 Hurley New Zealand Boardriders Club Championships in an emphatic victory at Whangamata on Sunday 8th May. Point Boardriders won the title after claiming the tag team event win which was the last chance for their opponents to steal the show.

They have won the right to be New Zealand’s representative at the Usher Cup to be held on Australia’s Gold Coast in January 2023, the first global team surfing event.

Led by their senior team member Larry Fisher, Point Boardriders claimed the tag team title as well as a one-two finish in the Open Men’s Division through Taylor Hutchison and Caleb Cutmore, a win

by Kora Cooper in the Under 18 Boys, and thirds by Brie Bennett in the Open Women’s Division and team captain Larry Fisher in the Senior Men’s Division.

The overall points title came down to the tag team event with Point Boardriders that held the overall lead throughout the event and they finally made it official over Bay Boardriders of Mount Maunganui in second, New Plymouth Surfriders in third

and host club Whangamata, finishing in fourth in the tag team event.

“Wow, we came here to win this weekend but this event has been more than that” commented Larry Fisher.

“This has been the best event that has captured what our club is about, being inclusive of all surfers and working as a team. That is what our President Luke Hughes has been working towards at home. We are stoked to win, and we want to represent New Zealand with pride at the Usher Cup next year” he added.

The surf cranked for the final day of the event with the swell remaining in the 1.5m mark with light variable winds.

Taylor Hutchison found himself in a battle with teammate Caleb Cutmore for the Open Men’s Division win. Both took different approaches to the final and it was Hutchison who surfed to the south that gained ascendency in the final. Bay Boardriders surfer Jack Hinton finished in third place impressing all weekend in both the team and individual events while Waihi Beaches’ sole finalist Zac Curle, finished in fourth.

Natasha Gouldsbury (New Plymouth) took a win in the Open Women’s Division which kept her club in contention for

the overall win. Gouldsbury surfed to a 12.43 point total in the final to beat fellow Taranaki surfer Ariana Shewry of Oakura Boardriders who finished in second with Bennett in third and Lion Rock’s Gabi Paul in fourth.

Jos Kennings defended his title in the Over 40 Men’s Division helping Whangamata to fourth overall. Kennings posted a 13.10 point heat total leaving his opponents requiring excellent scores to catch him. Oakura Boardriders’ Eli Smith finished the closest to Kennings with an 8.90 point heat total while Larry Fisher finished in third and Maori Bay Boardriders sole finalist Rian Boyd finishing in fourth.

Kora Cooper (Rag) nailed the Under 18 Boys Division with his highest single wave score being a 7.23 point ride for a vertical backhand attack. Cooper is two weeks away from heading to the World Junior Championships being held in El Salvador.

His closest rival will be his teammate at the event, Ta Mouldey. Mouldey was within striking distance of Cooper for the whole final, finishing with a 12.90 point heat total. Papamoa Boardriders representative Tava Santorik finished the final in third place with North Coast Boardriders surfer Tai Erceg-Gray finishing in fourth.

May 2022 Community Board Update

O

ur Community Board meeting was held on Wednesday 4th May via Zoom.

During the public forum several issues were raised including: Safety for cyclists in town (particularly on Wainui Road), vehicle stops in front of the Super Value shop and the effectiveness of the security cameras in town and who maintains these.

Each of these will be picked up by the community board and discussed further with WDC and relevant parties.

Discussions around the management of storm, waste and drinking water through the Three Water’s Reform programme was discussed with Alison Diaz giving an update on Three Waters Reform. Government has taken on board feedback from the Three Water’s Working Group and last week accepted 44 of the 47 recommendations for changes to its water infrastructure reform programme, including recommendations for ownership and privatisation. At this stage it is expected that Councils will retain a share in the new entities and there will be a small subcommittee to feed local governance groups.

It will be 2024 before the four new entities become live so it will cross an election. In the meantime WRC will continue to regulate on storm water and waste water.

Mathew Telfer and Stephen Howard provided an update on how the Raglan Waste Water proposal is developing.

Matters from the works and Issue report that were discussed were: Manu Bay Breakwater Wall Meeting has been set up by Tim Clarke for late May to discuss the ongoing issues.

Currently the breakwater wall is causing safety issues for those that use the boat ramp at Manu Bay. Wi Neera Walkway seawall Tonkin and Taylors Condition assessment of the wall from the Bow street Jetty to the old Coast Guard Building was tabled.

This sea wall is failing in certain areas and options for its upgrade are being investigated including retention on the land side, widening of the wall, lighting and needs for safety rail with consideration for any sea level rise.

Raglan wharf structural repairs, pontoon and walkway This project is proceeding and tenders were due in from three tenderers in the first week of May. It is still expected that structural repairs will start in July and subject to consenting walkway and pontoon will follow immediately after.

The Community Board Chairperson advised she had meet with the Rangitahi developers to view a potential location for a new indoor community swimming facility on the peninsula.

A group of locals, that include a pool building and management expert, are getting the project going and will be looking at forming a trust if the project gets the go-ahead. Proposals are expected to be presented to the board once designs and concepts are ready.

Intra-Raglan Bus Service No money was included in the long term plan for a local bus service but Council staff have written a report and are asking the infrastructure committee at their next meeting for the cash.

Hopefully this will be discussed at the next Council Infrastructure meeting.

Matariki Celebrations The community is gearing up to celebrate Matariki in June this year with the official public holiday set for Friday 24 June. There will be a number of community events happening in Raglan to celebrate Matariki, including a possible community celebration on Bow St on the 26th.

Food rescue app launches in Raglan to tackle food waste

T

he Waikato region is receiving a sustainability boost to its hospitality sector with Foodprint, a new tool that connects customers to discounted surplus food from local eateries, officially launching in Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Raglan on 2 May. Combating the climate crisis by minimising food from going to waste, Foodprint operates by offering generously discounted surplus food from eateries to customers to ‘rescue’ before it is thrown out. Customers order and pay for food in the app before collecting directly from the eateries, with the significant discounts ranging from 30 to 90 percent off the normal retail price.

Almost 50,000 tonnes of food is wasted by the hospitality and retail sectors in New Zealand each year, over 60 percent of which is still edible. When food is thrown out it decomposes in landfills and emits the greenhouse gas methane, making food waste a huge contributor to climate change.

Foodprint has partnered with around 7 eateries in Raglan including The Herbal Dispensary, SWOP, Wyld, SuperValue, Aroha Sushi, The Hut and The Shack Raglan.

They join the community of 400 eateries in Auckland and Wellington reducing their ‘foodprint’

with the app with customers ‘rescuing’ their surplus food.

“We are excited to be continuing our nationwide expansion by bringing Foodprint to the Waikato region,” says Founder Michal Garvey. “Foodprint is a sustainability driven app that gives customers a chance to take a bite at saving the planet. Addressing food waste has been identified as one of the top actions to combat the climate crisis and is currently under consultation through Ministry for the Environment.”

Foodprint has been working with the local Councils to open their service up to the region. “When I read about the Foodprint app, I knew it was something I wanted to support the roll out of for our district.

The app and its mission aligns with the Council’s food waste minimisation objectives and we hope it will provide a way for local businesses to get as much monetary value in their pockets as possible for food they have prepared.” Says Sally Fraser, Waste Minimisation Officer at Waipā District Council.

Foodprint launched in Auckland in 2019. Last year, founder Michal Garvey took part in the country’s first Climate Response Accelerator, a new programme hosted by Wellington’s Creative HQ to supercharge innovative start-ups tackling climate change challenges.

Raglan Museum: Gilmour Street

R

obert and John Gilmour arrived in New Zealand in the 1850s, and Robert and his wife, Sarah, bought land in and around Raglan.

They had 7 sons and 5 daughters.

Their first shop was where the old butter factory still stands on Wallis St. The next shop was on the corner of Cliff and James Street and was run by a son, Alan, after Robert died at the age of 57. The Gilmour family continued to run stores – often a combination of grocery sales on one side and women’s clothing on the other-until 1945.

Two sons, Bob and Charlie, were the longest-standing proprietors, running the shop from the corner of Cliff and Bow streets, but later building one on the corner of Green (now Wainui) and Bow Streets (and then rebuilding it when the first one burnt down in 1921!).

The family formed excellent relationships with their customers, locals and settlers alike. Both Bob

and Charlie were good linguists and were able to assist Māori with advice on many subjects. They were also generous with provision of supplies for people in need.

In recognition of their excellent and longstanding service to the community, they had a street named after them…although it is unclear why the street was a little distance from places that the family lived and did business in. But then again, perhaps some of the numerous Gilmour relations lived in the street over the many years of them being significant residents of Raglan?

Shifra is visiting from Iowa, in the mid-west of the U.S. It is vast and flat corn country.

But before Iowa she spent years as an artist's model in N.Y.C. and France, and much of her life was spent in artist communities and working studios. It was the recent covid-driven lock-downs that afforded her free time to finally pick up her own brush here in Raglan.

Her paintings reveal a fresh appreciation of our familiar hills, clusters of foliage, inlets and cloudscapes. The scenes are composed, but not romanticized. They possess a heightened, bold, tonal treatment of shapes, and they are rendered with some speed that captures the freshness that is traditionally attributed to “Plein aire” painting (painting outside in nature). The reduction of detail and the flat treatment of space come across as a modernist strategy.

Notes on the gallery wall say that the framing and the support for the paintings are all budget and recycled (and the pricing reflects this…I know it is indelicate to discuss prices when reviewing art, but this is Raglan and $300 for a decent unframed painting by an unknown artist in a small town is about right, right?) These paintings deserve a more classy frame.

Anyway, this show of work depicting Raglan's environment reminded me why people still have an urge to turn a landscape into paint, and how there is still pleasure to be had in looking at the results.

It is a real achievement that the best work in this modest show transcends the budget materials and speaks to the splendour of Whāingaroa.

“Everything Changes “ by Shifra Gassner is currently showing at the Old School Arts Center Sundays and weekdays 10am-2pm until May 27.

more than 45-kilogram pumpkin has won top honours Raglan’s Crop Swap’s annual Pumpkin Festival.

The Hartstone and Herbert family’s pumpkin was the pride of the festival, weighing in at 46.8 kg.

Held at the Raglan Bowling Club, locals pitted pumpkin against pumpkin in the highly contested weight, smallest circumference, unusual and scariest categories.

A large turnout gathered to appraise the humble squash in all shapes and sizes, and taste-tested the various sweet and savoury pumpkin delights.

I

t's all smiles as Raglan 9 Hole Golfers amble down the 7th fairway onto a meritorious victory over Horsham Downs 46 to 26 points.

Raglan's team comprising Lyn Rogers, Jan Brightwell, Annie Highet and Helen Goddwin, pictured above, played steady golf to be overall winners on the day of this Waikato 9 Hole Pennants Competition.

With 12 teams from around Waikato competing, the level of golf was extremely high as teams were keen to take out top spot. Raglan is coming 4th equal in this competition.

The next round in this competition is on the 13th May when the ladies will play Riverside at Hukanui Golf Club. Good luck ladies!

he Raglan Bowling Club held its second Rangitahi Centennial Invitational tournament on Saturday.

Players from other clubs who are great supporters of Raglan Bowls were invited to participate. A wonderful spread provided

The Rangitahi Trophy pictured above left is made by Simon Te Wheoro and presented annually at the Raglan Bowling Club Centennial Tournament.

The Rangitahi trophy was provided by the Peacocke family and is made from old timber from the old bridge that connected Raglan to the Rangitahi Peninsula.

Each year when the trophy is competed for, the names of the winning, second and third-place teams gets written into the original minute book of the Raglan Bowling Club, dating back to 1921.

Waikato region rating information database — available for public inspection Pursuant to Section 28 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, Waikato Regional Council gives notice that the Waikato region’s rating information database (RID) is available for public inspection at the council, 160 Ward Street, Hamilton, between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
