ver the last two weeks there have been fourteen family harm incidents, eleven dishonesty offences, and four vehicle crashes.

Please remember when driving on SH23 to be patient; traffic can get congested and slow at times. Additionally, remember to be considerate and pull over if traffic is following and you’re unable or not confident driving at a reasonable speed. If we be both patient and considerate, we might not have to read another “to the driver on SH23” post.

Most thefts occur to premises and vehicles that are left insecure. Please, lock your doors and vehicles - it is a great deterrent.

‘Ram raids’ continue to be an on-going trend in the Waikato and beyond and Raglan has not been an exception. Police continue to work hard to prevent this type of offending and yesterday we were able to apprehend 8 youths and recover 5 stolen vehicles in Cambridge after help from the community.

This leads me on to my last point: I’d like to remind people that if it is an emergency, or suspicious, or is time critical and happening now, please ring 111. No matter the time of day or night. Otherwise, if you would like to make a report of lost property or report an incident which has already occurred, please dial 105 to report.

Alternatively, you can go online at 105. police.govt.nz and make a report there by completing an online form.

Raglan rallies support for the Omicron wave

ust like the rest of Aotearoa, Raglan is riding the Omicron wave as numbers increase exponentially on a daily basis.

With health workers and testing labs overloaded with rising cases, the recent move to phase three is designed to help the health system handle the pressure.

Rapid antigen tests (RAT) are now being used in place of PCR tests and these are free to critical workers, household contacts, and people with symptoms. RATs are selfadministered and give results in 15 minutes and are now available at the Raglan Rugby grounds seven days a week from 9.3011.30am.

The community Covid response group formed during the first lockdown is also ramping up to coordinate a cohesive plan for supporting vulnerable people in isolation.

Raglan councillor Lisa Thomson has been working with the response group and organising volunteers to distribute the RATs. Lisa says a role has been established through DHB funding for a community response coordinator to manage an 0800RAGLAN number and help people connect to the service that meets their particular need.

“We were able to give those hours to Fiona Cutmore. She has been involved in

the food bank processes and she comes with a really high level of skills.”

A Whaingaroa marae collective has also been established, coordinated by Mike Edmonds, to respond to the needs of vulnerable whānau who are isolating.

Lisa says cross coordination between all the groups is helping respond to a wide range of needs in the community.

“All the marae in our rohe are working together and they are also working with the community response group. We are using all of our networks, as well as our wellbeing warriors such as Margaret Dillon, Amy Hanna and others who have networks out in the community.”

Raglan Medical Centre is operating business as usual and Doctor Mike Loten says it’s vital for people to access the clinic for medical concerns.

“You still need to contact us if you've got another medical problem. We don't want people saying - there's COVID around, I'm just going to stay at home and put up with my symptoms. Because the biggest risk to people's health is when they ignore other things.”

Mike says it is also important for people to notify the Ministry of Health about their RAT results as the centre gets alerted to registered patients who have tested positive.

“The best use of our time is to actually contact the people that are coming back with positive results, and to triage them

Raglan Medical is also doing supervised RAT tests available for people unable to do their own.

Raglan Pharmacy is funded to provide supervised RATs for asymptomatic, unvaccinated domestic travellers over 12 years of age or people needing to produce a negative test when attending a court of law.

The pharmacy will be undertaking a new service —Private Supervised Rapid Antigen Test Service for international pretravel departure soon (this service will be paid for by the customer).

Raglan food waste collection consultation opens

Consultation for a targeted rate for the food waste collection is now open.

W

aikato District Council is encouraging the Raglan community to participate in the continuation of the town's food waste collection service, which is now open for consultation.

Raglan has led the way in reducing waste to landfill and food waste management in the Waikato Region for many years now, thanks to the expertise of Xtreme Zero Waste.

Up until now the service has been funded via the Ministry for the Environment, Council’s Waste Minimisation Fund and self-funded by Xtreme Zero Waste through fundraising.

But, for the service to continue to run beyond July 2022, an annual targeted rate of $72.90 (about $1.40

a week) is required to cover operational costs of the service.

This includes the cost of running and maintaining the collection vehicles, staff wages and the maintenance cost of processing equipment.

Council is legally required to consult on the continuation of the food waste collection service as it is proposing an introduction of a new targeted rate to the Raglan community.

Council is consulting again for the following reasons: • Waste industry changes now include a national standardisation for kerbside collection being worked on by Government, which will include food waste as a priority area. This may lead to mandatory food waste collection services, which

Raglan would be well prepared for as early adopters of this process.

• Costs of sending rubbish to landfill have risen considerably and will continue to do so, increasing benefits of landfill diversion.

• Raglan Community Board requested Council to do so.

The benefits of a food waste collection service are varied, and they include: • Xtreme Zero Waste diverted about 620 tonnes of food waste from households in Raglan in the first four years of operation.

• Food waste in landfill generates leachate which can pose an ongoing and long-term management issue in landfills as it is both toxic and can pollute groundwater and waterways.

• Landfills produce greenhouse gas emissions, methane and carbon dioxide which contribute to global warming/climate change.

• It creates a circular economy: the food waste collection and local processing creates multiple benefits - local jobs and a great high-end quality compost local product.

• Getting the food waste out of rubbish bags reduces animal strikes on bags and means people can

fill their rubbish bag completely before putting it out as they no longer smell.

• The collection can complement home composting as you are able to put items out for collection that can’t usually break down in home composting units ( such as meat, seafood, citrus, bread, dairy).

Although a targeted rate needs to be introduced for the service to continue, those that use the food waste collection to its full extent can reduce the amount of waste in their rubbish bags by about 35%.

Therefore, some of the cost of the targeted rate can be offset by the fact that fewer rubbish bags need to be bought every year.

The results of the consultation will be considered as part of the council’s decision-making process about the future of the service.

The consultation closes on 1 April.

A message from the chamber

A

nd just like that, things are being put into a new perspective and our little islands seem to be a rather appealing place to call home, still.

R

obertson Street could just as well have been Rutherford Street, as its first inhabitant was George Rutherford, a well-regarded figure in the community, who ran flax mills in the area during the early part of the 20th century. (He was the brother of the more famous Ernest, who worked in a small shed on George’s property). A story for another day…

But in 1916, Noel Robertson purchased George’s home. This old homestead still stands there today.

Noel and his family were well known for running Robertson’s Motor Transport for 54 years.

This included the daily Hamilton-Raglan mail run.

Passengers were transported in Robertson’s cars, and then later in buses. Drivers included all 4 of his sons, as well as one of his daughters-in-law, Myrle.

The Robertsons eventually sold their property in Robertson Street, but one son, Denny and his wife Alice, retired to a new home in the street, thus keeping both street and family connected for many more years!

Adapt and figure it out as we go seems to be the common theme lately.

The Raglan business community has shown incredible strength over summer, handling busy days with minimal staff and small teams, always in the unknown of what the day might bring. Wonderful collaborations and staff sharing ideas are being road tested as I write this.

Now, moving into autumn, we are starting to see some space in our schedules to regroup and perhaps take a breather for ourselves. Some have already started to make physical changes to store fronts and interior spaces with the intention to “be ready” and accommodate further, possibly longterm-ish changes to how we interact with each other.

Within the Raglan Business Chamber we have had the opportunity to introduce a new digital series, in collaboration with DTI lawyers, where we get to bring up to date information on business and employment law to

our members regularly; making sure we are in the know with the ever changing landscape of the traffic light system. The first replay of the series on managing the aftermath of the current Omicron wave as a business is now available in our Member Resource library.

And we are looking forward to a light hearted networking and summer celebration event on the Wahinemoe together with our valued members; this is on the cards for this month.

I personally had the chance to meet with Fiona Gates, the new owner of the Raglan Hotel.

Naturally I was curious to hear about her plans with the ‘Old Lady’ and I am pleased to report there are some exciting shifts on the horizon. Fiona is a true power woman - not wasting any time she has already started to give the restaurant and garden bar a bit of a facelift, adding a modern touch while respecting and highlighting the history within those walls. And that is just the beginning. If you haven’t yet, go take a look for yourself.

An interview with Principal Amanda Nasilasila

A chat with the Waitetuna School Principal W

aitetuna School is a great little school with a big heart and this week the Chronicle had a chat to Principal Amanda Nasilasila to hear about the kura.

How long have you been principal at Waitietuna?

This is my third year at Waitetuna School.

What changes have you seen in that time?

As a school we have been working on developing our school's local curriculum.

There are so many amazing local opportunities and local resources and we make the most of these things - Karioi project, Whaingaroa Enviro Centre, surfing lessons and using wonderful local community members to support our students’ learning - just to name a few.

We have developed a wonderful community foodbowl vision which includes a great orchard and a wonderful garden which will continue to develop.

We are eco-sourcing native seedlings and, with the help of Raglan Food Company, we are developing this area of the school. Students get to collect and grow native seedlings that we have sourced locally.

What aspects of the school’s culture have you particularly enjoyed?

I love the small rural school culture we have. It is a pleasure to come to school. It is an amazing environment for a child to be a part of.

What benefits do you think Waitetuna School offers children in the wider community?

The smaller school environment allows for each child to really feel a part of the school; belonging and being a caring supportive school helps supports student wellbeing and self esteem.

The teachers and Principal know each child, and they get to enjoy wonderful open spaces and a great environmental education programme; this includes a great bush school day which our junior room teacher has developed.

We know how much learning can happen in this environment so it is exciting to be able to take our students down to Totara Grove one day a week.

he show must go on and the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards (RAFFA) won’t let a global pandemic get in the way of local filmmaking endeavours.

Old School Arts Centre manager Jacqueline Anderson says every year the RAFFA team of volunteers strive to adapt, develop and improve the film awards.

The awards night may have been cancelled last year but the team brought the Red Carpet to the awardees and captured the award ceremony in film.

“Even with the constant threat of lockdowns and the uncertainty of when we would move through the different levels last year, the team was determined to celebrate our awesome local filmmaking talent.”

Jacqueline says the film festival team are keen to have fresh new faces and new energy on the team.

“You don’t need to be a film industry expert.

We tell our filmmakers that a simple device like a mobile phone and their imagination are all that is needed. If you love a good movie and want to be part of a team whose goal is to

nurture up-and-coming local creatives, that’s pretty much all that is required to join the film festival team.”

RAFFA nominations are open and a Red Carpet event at the Raglan Town Hall is being planned for September again, Jacqueline says.

“We won’t let the uncertainties of Covid dampen our enthusiasm for the RAFFAs. We continue planning for the awards night because it’s such an awesome event and a fabulous way to celebrate the creatives who put their heart and soul into their films.”

Shops to remain open on Easter Sunday

S

hops in the Waikato district can continue to open on Easter Sunday after Waikato District Council decided to keep its existing policy.

The policy, required to be reviewed every five years, was adopted at Council’s meeting on Monday 28 February.

During the consultation period a total of 121 submissions were received. Of those, 46 were in support of keeping the policy, 74 against, and 1 suggested that only essential services should trade.

Many of those who did not support the policy expressed concern for the wellbeing of business owners and workers, stating that they wanted to make sure there were no barriers to them being able to be with their families and to rest.

However, those in support of the policy said, after having to close during recent COVID-19 lockdowns, shops should be able to open to help recoup their losses.

Councillors acknowledged that wellbeing is extremely important but noted that businesses did not have to open, and employees also had the right to refuse to work on Easter Sunday. Additionally, they noted that many businesses are still finding it challenging because of the impacts of COVID-19 and lockdowns and they did not want to restrict another day of trading for businesses that are already “doing it tough”.

Many of those who supported the policy expressed an opinion that only a minority of the population is religious and that business owners should be able to trade, and employees able to work, if they choose to do so.

During the hearing, Councillors noted that they wanted a consistent approach across the district.

High resolution imagery of the top of power poles will be taken by a low flying helicopter so safety and replacement assessments can be made.

The aim is to keep the public safe by rectifying any issues before they cause problems including power outages.

The public are encouraged to take appropriate steps with animals and livestock, if they are likely to be spooked, such as moving them away from paddocks near network power lines and/or moving them to a secure location.

aikato District’s Creative Communities Scheme (CCS) is seeking applications, until noon on 14 March, from local individuals or groups that need financial support towards creative and performing arts projects.

Since its inception in 1995, Waikato District Council has administered the funds for the district on behalf of Creative NZ. The Assessment Committee encourages candidates who might need financial support towards materials, venue or equipment hire, promotion and publicity to apply now for the 27th round of funding.

Numerous creative projects have benefited from the scheme over the years, including Waitakaruru Arboretum’s Sculpture Park with their 2021 ‘Stories in the Landscape’ sculpture exhibition.

Showcasing over 100 sculptures and installations within one of New Zealand’s largest outdoor galleries, The Sculpture Park was awarded funding of $6000 from CCS in 2021.

The Sculpture Park has utilised the Council’s funding towards employing a parttime staff member to assist with educating visitors and enhancing the tour experience.

The funding also supported the creation and distribution of 50 reusable printed park guides which have aided the 2600 visitors the exhibition has hosted to date.

The Sculpture Park’s Trust Secretary Dorothy Wakeling is grateful to Waikato District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme for offering funding towards exhibitions like ‘Stories in the Landscape’, as the funding served as the primary contributor to enable the exhibition to go ahead.

“Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, other funders have had to withdraw their contributions due to limitations on visitors to the exhibition and the reduced number of artists who could showcase their work.

Despite the restrictions, we are delighted with the visitor numbers and the Trust has decided to extend the exhibition until the end of March to allow for more visitors,” says Ms. Wakeling.

Chair of the Assessment Committee and Waikato District Councillor Stephanie Henderson, commends the opportunities the CCS provides to artists, performers and creative talents across the district.

“The scheme has supported such a variety of different projects including performances by local music groups, pottery and carving exhibitions, dancing workshops and the development of kōwhaiwhai for some of our marae.

We are proud of the diversity and talent we have across the district, and we want them to know we are here to help support and encourage their creative ambitions,” says Councillor Henderson.

New Zealand Junior Surfing Team heads to El Salvador A

Apart from Kora Cooper (Rag) who returns to the competition in the U18 Boys, Ava Henderson (Chch) and Natasha Gouldsbury (Tara) returning in the U18 girls, the Junior Surfing Team sees the debut of nine of New Zealand’s best junior surfers.

This will be the first time the Junior Team has been away since 2019 and the first World Junior Championships since that year due to the ongoing global pandemic.

El Salvador is no stranger to top level competition, being the latest venue for the World Surfing Games/ Olympic qualifier where Paige Hareb placed 11th in 2021.

It will again be the host for the 2023 Olympic Games qualifications.

After a hard-fought New Zealand Grom Series, Finn Vette (Gis), Kora Cooper and Kalani Louis (Tara) will represent the Under 18 Boys Division.

The team will compete at the 2022 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Junior Surfing Championships from the 27th May - 5th June. New Zealand has been represented at ISA World Junior Championships since 2003 when the junior divisions were separated from the World Surfing Games.

Prior to this time the New Zealand Junior Surfing Team attended the World Grommet Titles since its inception in 1989.

The championship is the largest junior surfing event in the world playing host to over 340 surfers from 44 nations in 2022.

All new players please bring your birth certificate or passport to the muster.

Every player needs to be registered through Sporty before weigh-in and also have paid their subs.
