ost people will have read in last week’s Raglan Chronicle a decision

by Waikato District Council to not fund Raglan’s food waste collection service through a targeted rate.

However, over 61% of the 774 people who wrote submissions to the Council said that they valued the food waste service and want collections to continue. We do too, because it’s too important to lose, and with your help and support, Xtreme Zero Waste will continue delivering this service to our community.

The climate emergency is now a reality and the New Zealand Government has set an ambitious goal to make Aotearoa carbon neutral by 2050. Keeping food waste out of landfills reduces production of two potent greenhouse gases, methane and carbon dioxide.

Raglan’s food waste collection is the first dedicated kerbside food waste collection service in New Zealand, so Raglan can be proud to be national leaders in an initiative to address the causes of climate change. Since the kerbside collection started in August 2017, Xtreme and the community has diverted around 380 tonnes of Raglan household’s food waste. This means as a community we’ve collectively helped reduce several hundred

tonnes of greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere, equivalent to around 84 cars emissions in carbon dioxide, and we’ve also reduced other emissions by having less waste trucks going to the landfill at Hampton Downs, on the way to Auckland. There are other benefits too – we are creating a locally used resource from our food waste, i.e. compost, and the service and composting operation provides employment to local people.

Xtreme was set up by the community, for the community almost twenty years ago, as a not for profit community enterprise that is passionate about our community’s wellbeing and the environment. Xtreme diverts 78% of Raglan’s waste from landfill, which is one of the highest rates in the country. Our aim is to move forward to a world without waste.

Today we continue to operate as a charitable community enterprise. We rarely make surplus income, and if we do, it is reinvested into projects and equipment to help us do our job better. Xtreme’s key contract is with Waikato District Council to collect kerbside waste and recycling, municipal street bins, and most recently household food waste.

We passionately want to remain a viable community enterprise that supports local people and works hard for the environment. We are now busy looking at various ways in which we can raise funds

to keep the food waste project going, and we’ll be sending information about this campaign soon to mailboxes and out on social media.

Thank you to all the people who took the time to make a submission to WDC on the food waste service. Numerous people who submitted offered to donate money and provided lots of great ideas and solutions. We are actively looking at all of these.

Kauri desk a reminder of Vernon family’s lengthy association with Raglan district

A

kauri bench once used for “wrapping up the meat” in his father’s country butchery business dominates Trevor Vernon’s home office.

It is now his computer desk, and strewn with files and paperwork which still cannot hide its chunky beauty.

Trevor rescued the historic slab of kauri – damaged and stained with creosote from years of later abuse as a garage workbench – and had it fitted for his office space at the same time he had his Greenslade Rd home renovated.

“The kitchen people did it up for me,” he told the Chronicle proudly.

“It’s a bit of Dad’s old shop here in the house.”

Trevor’s dad Bob is perhaps better remembered as historian R T Vernon, who wrote a series of booklet-sized Raglan district histories now kept in both the museum on Wainui Rd and the downtown library.

“Bob thought the history of the district should be written down because the older people were dying (out) and then we wouldn’t have a clue,” Trevor explains.

Trevor’s son Marcus – a fifth generation Vernon still living in Raglan, these days not far from his father – remembers when “Pompa”, as Bob was called by his grandchildren, was writing the books.

Marcus was a boarder at Hamilton Boys’ High School back then and used to pop in on his thenretired grandfather. “Pompa would

have interviewed some people and he’d be typing away with two fingers on his little Olivetti,” he recalls.

It was work that – according to Coralie and Colin Ormiston, who wrote the foreword for the last booklet, entitled ‘Raglan’ – Bob seemed to think might take a year or two but which ultimately required about 15 years of “dedicated research” involving much travelling, talking and notetaking.

Thanks to his painstaking efforts we know, for instance, that the Vernons came to the district 150-odd years ago when Bob’s grandfather Robert – a carpenter who’d grown up in Auckland – settled in Te Mata. He subsequently built many of the district’s early homes.

Bob writes in ‘Te Mata -Te Hutewai, The Early Years’ of his grandfather taking up a 200-acre homestead block of his own, then a similar-sized adjoining block for his son William (Bob’s father) who lived there all his life. This land is now farmed by Mark Gaustad.

Bob himself took up 40 acres, earlier acquired by his father, at the bottom of Houchen Rd where he ran a butchery and later farmed. The treasured kauri bench in Trevor’s office today dates from this period, while the house on that site has now been sold to local potter Tony Sly along with 40 acres of land.

Bob’s son Trevor, now 78, retains to this day two lifestyle blocks of about 40 acres each in the vicinity, while grandson Marcus

only three years ago sold up the last of his farm at the top of Houchen Rd to travel and do other things.

“I wanted a change,” Marcus explains. “And it’s good not to have the responsibility (of the farm any more).”

The generations – Bob, Trevor, Marcus – have shared not only a love of the land but also an ongoing affinity for their horses used in stockwork. “We’ve always ridden,” says Marcus, who was a regular on horseback in Raglan’s annual Anzac parade with Trevor filling in when he wasn’t around.

Trevor and Marcus rode as kids at the local pony club, going on to

play polocrosse and hunt all over the Waikato as adults.

Marcus also ran Magic Mountain Horse Treks from his farm as a side-business for more than two decades. It began as a bit of a hobby, says the 54 year old.

“Friends of a friend were up for a few rides .. it was pretty small (at first) … then with backpackers coming to town it got busier.”

Though trekking didn’t make a fortune it was a good lifestyle, says Marcus. And it paved the way for a couple of even better jobs – in movies – which took Marcus to Auckland in 2007, then to Wellington three years later.

His first role was as a rider in the 100-minute feature ‘The Warrior’s Way’, a New ZealandSouth Korean fantasy action film

produced by Barrie Osborne, who was also producer of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

‘The Warrior’s Way’ was released only on DVD, but for Marcus it led to work as a riding double and animal trainer on ‘The Hobbit’ series of three high fantasy adventure films directed by New Zealand’s Peter Jackson. Marcus says it was the best job he’s ever had.

He and Trevor look set to stay ‘Around Raglan’, as one of Bob’s books is titled. They’re proud to have had a potted family history written for them by Bob, and say there may yet be a sixth generation of Vernons in the district if Marcus’s children choose to return and put down roots.

Led by a core team of Year 10 students – Sophie Higgins, Cassidy Hanna, Sienna Harding, Mila Pospisil, Holly Olsen, Halena Lorenzen-Hawkings, Finnbar Eaddie and Braeden Rossiter – they rallied other students to go without and raised over $1000 with more sponsorship and donations still coming in.

More than 30 students from Years 7-10 signed up to go without and the organising team brought the participants together with a movie and dodge ball games to take their minds off their hunger.

The group decided to take on the challenge after attending a World Vision conference in Auckland.

“We were inspired and it started us onto this journey,” Cassidy says.

Although they set their goal high at $10,000, the students know that every little bit helps to support hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese refugee children who have fled to Uganda, by providing essentials like food and clean water as well as emotional and educational support.

Social Sciences teacher Joe Rao says the students have displayed amazing leadership and organisational skills throughout the challenge.

“I am really proud of the Year 10s that led this campaign and put empathy into action by trying to make the world a better place.”

has nine visible stars - Matariki, Tupuārangi, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Waitī, Tupuānuku, Ururangi, Waitā, Pōhutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi and can be seen before sunrise in mid-winter, looking to the north-east horizon.

Matariki means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki).

According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens. The eyes became many constellations, and among them live Matariki.

Raglan Fish are donating their delicious, heartwarming seafood chowder and co-organsier Susanne Giessen-Prinz says to get in quick as the first Tuesday soup kitchen was sold out in the first hour.

“It was a lovely communal atmosphere, with everyone sitting together around the table and chatting with people they hadn't met before.”

Over $900 was raised at the first Souper Bowl, which will go towards the $20,000 shortfall required to complete the Creative Space build at the Old School Arts Centre.

Susanne says the Raglan community have been very supportive, with the Harbourview Hotel, SuperValue, Raglan Four Square, Raglan Coconut Yogurt, Raglan Bakery, Raglan Fish, and the Waikato District Council all contributing to the fundraiser.

It is a zero-waste kitchen and people are encouraged to bring their own containers for takeaways.

Sarah Bing will have a selection of her colourful handcrafted ceramic bowls and soup mugs to purchase and filled with tasty soup for $35.

Head to the Raglan Town Hall supper room on Tuesday, June 18 from 5.30-8.30pm for the best homemade soups in town. Soup and bread for $10, kids $5 and $35 to keep the bowl Janine Jackson.

Whale Tails a chat with coach JD Who do you coach and how long have you been coaching them for?

I coach the Whale Tails. We started the team three years ago. We are now in our fourth season. The girls and I came up with the name and we have all the original team members that we started with as well as a few new ones this year.

How old are the girls?

Our team are 8-9 years old but we just moved up a division this year to U10's. Our team is on the younger side for their division. Two of the girls were turning 9 this year and could not play in the U8's. We really didn't want to break up the team, so we had a talk to the team and parents and decided to step up the whole team to the U10 division.

After all its all about team spirit.

Tell us about the girls achievements over the years?

The Whales Tail's achievements last year were epic. They won their Waikato division and then we were invited to Cavius Jnr Girls

tournament in Papamoa where the girls played 7 knock out games and made it all the way to the play offs where we lost to an Auckland team by one goal. It was incredible, we were so proud of them. And yes there were quite a few tears, although I think the girls took it better than us parents. A shout out to the Papamoa Football Club, beautiful grounds and great tournament. We all look forward to it this year.

What are you looking forward to this season?

Holding our own, hopefully, like I said we just stepped up a division so we are playing with the big girls now. I am really looking forward to see how the girls handle it. After doing so well last year, it will be a bit of a struggle this year but I am really looking forward to seeing their development from playing the older kids. They are a tough team and we have a few new players this season with a lot of potential. Its going to be a great season.

It is a great way to get them to be quiet and present too.

I heard that you have been recovering from a serious spider bite? What happened? How did it affect you?

Yep white tail spider bite 6 months ago with a hole in my right knee. Had some amazing help from West Coast Health and especially the district nurses - Tish was just amazing . So lucky to have such awesome and caring people in this community. I ate really clean and stayed well hydrated, just stayed super up beat . Seeing the nurses every day helped cause they are always super positive.

How has the experience affected you moving forward?

Has it impacted on how you are coaching the team?

I am 100 % now, just like any other injury build back up slowly.

Thresher Sharks. 10 to 11 years age group.

Why did you decide to take on a coaching role?

I decided to take on the coaching role to try and show the lads that fitness, eating habits and hydration are so important. In sport and every day life, what goes in has a massive effect on what comes out.

So every training session we sit down at the end. I make them a recovery bites or cookies. I get them to tell me what is in them and why we need things to recover etc plus the hydration education again.

Recover cookies are made with almond butter, hazelnut butter, chia seeds, coconut oils, dark cacao, pumpkin seeds etc.

Hydration comes down to water, good quality water. Water bottles are a part of the kit bag.

This season we have 218 kids playing for the club, spread over 22 teams, including 9 girls teams which is quite an achievement for a small community.

Raglan Area School has also managed to put together 2 teams, one being mixed seniors and one junior girls team.

Credit goes out to all parents involved, for the massive support and commitment you give to your kids every practice and game day, and the coaches, managers and helpers who make it all happen for the teams.

We want to thank Jo’s Takeaway for once again providing the POD certificates for all kids. Matt from Ozone for helping us out with the new upcoming website, and Freddy from Raglan Lawns for looking after the fields.

The nine stars of Matariki

Hiwa-i-te-rangi Matariki

According to Dr Rangi Matamua there are nine stars in the constellation of Matariki, rather than seven. They all hold dominion over particular areas of our environment as seen from a Māori worldview. There are also nine stars in the Greek tradition of the constellation Pleiades (Matariki).

Matariki (Alcyone) – the mother of the other stars in the constellation.

Ngā Mata o te Ariki – The Eyes of the God Commonly referred to as the Māori new year, according to Dr Matamua, it is a common misconception that ‘Matariki’ means ‘little eyes’; there are no stories to support this translation. Matariki is actually an abbreviation of ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki’ – The Eyes of the God. The god referred to is Tāwhirimātea, god of the winds and weather. When Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated from their dark embrace by Tāne, Tāwhirimātea was distraught. He tore out his eyes, crushed them into pieces and stuck them onto the chest of the sky. This is why Tāwhirimātea is the blind god, feeling his way around the sky and bringing winds from different directions.

Rehua (Antares) is the father but is not considered part of the Matariki constellation.

Pōhutukawa – connects Matariki to the dead and is the star that carries our dead across the year (Sterope/Asterope) Tupuānuku – is tied to food that grows in the ground (Pleione).

Tupuārangi – is tied to food that comes from above your head such as birds and fruit (Atlas).

Waitī – is tied to food that comes from fresh water (Maia).

Waitā– is tied to food that comes from salt water (Taygeta).

Maramataka Māori When Matariki rises and when it is celebrated should be predicted using the maramataka Māori, or the Māori lunar calendar, which refers to the moon phases rather than the solar, more common, Gregorian calendar.

The maramataka Māori comprises of twelve 29.5 day months and a 354-day year.

The Gregorian calendar, which is based on the number of times the Earth orbits the sun, has 365 day years.

The best time to observe Matariki is during the new phase of the moon, referred to as Tangaroa, the moon of plenty.

Waipunarangi – is tied to the rain (Electra).

Ururangi – is tied to the winds (Merope).

Hiwaiterangi/Hiwa – is the youngest star in the cluster, the star you send your wishes to (Celaeno).

This year Matariki begins on June 25.

Dr Rangi Matamua acknowledges that differing traditions exist throughout Aotearoa in relation to Matariki. This perspective comes from Dr Rangi Matamua’s research over the years as well as information passed down from his ancestors.

He spoke about his ancestors who had reputations as witch doctors and astronomers and were interviewed by ethnographer Elsdon Best for his book The Astronomical Knowledge of the Māori (1922). To date, this book is still the most comprehensive record of Māori star lore, but Matamua’s ancestors are not acknowledged for their contribution of 90% of that knowledge due to their status as witch doctors.

This led to Dr Matamua’s ancestors spending 30 years authoring their own book of 400 pages and 1000 Māori star names.

Dr Matamua’s grandfather held on to the manuscript for 40 years without opening it and, before he died, he entrusted Dr Matamua with sharing the knowledge but protecting the book, saying: ‘Knowledge that isn’t shared isn’t knowledge.’
