I wanted to share my submission with you to enable you to use logic, facts and world leading advice when setting local policy. No mandates should be used in council public managed places, and I also challenge the council to remove mandates for their own council staff.

Community Christmas Picnic A huge thank you to Colin Chung and his team of enthusiatic helpers who put on a sumptuous Christmas luncheon, and supplied us with lovely music on the lawns at the Raglan Congregational Church.

They went to so much effort, and I'm sure they were disappointed, having spent hours preparing in order that no one would feel alone or isolated on Christmas Day, that more Raglanites did not take advantage of their wonderful offer.

I understand they had prepared enough food for three times the number who came. Santa had wrapped presents for the children too! And he managed to stay in his hot Santa suit throughout! Good on you Santa – you'll be glad to be back at the North Pole!

A suggestion for future years could be to require an RSVP beforehand. God bless you Colin and team for all that you did. It was much appreciated.

L

ocal artist cum children’s author Astrid Conjaerts Schepel may have spent the past year writing about a fictional mind traveller’s Kiwi exploits but now she and her family are about to set forth on an adventure of their own, half a world away in the arctic area of Norway.

So while she’s looking forward to the publication late this month of ‘The MindTraveller New Zealand’ – a children’s story which follows the central figure Jae around the country in his boat-bed – she also relishes the prospect of new challenges in a colder climate.

That despite the fact she’s loved walking the beach every day with her dog, and rates the orcas coming into the harbour among the best of her memories from 10 years living in Raglan.

Astrid has turned moments like these into features of her second mind-traveller book, which sees the main character of the series now learning about the Kiwi way of life – and about himself – while venturing in his dreams from north to south and back again.

Her daughter Najade – who is also artistic – has in turn come up with some very familiar Kiwi landmarks to illustrate Jae’s journey, including Manu Bay where orcas and surfers ride the waves “in one of

the longest left-hand breaks known around the world”.

Hobbiton also is instantly recognisable as Jae ventures into “the fantasy world of Middle Earth”, as is the South Island’s Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain.

The author has Jae and his new-found friend Maui travelling the country Kiwistyle, first in an old surf van with surfboards strapped on the roof.

Then they take a Northern Explorer train down through the North Island, the Interislander ferry across Cook Strait, a bus to the mountains and glaciers in the South Island, a boat to Stewart Island and finally a flight from Christchurch back to Auckland courtesy of Air New Zealand.

In all, an “epic” Kiwi adventure dreamt

by Jae from the comfort of his boat-bed.

Astrid told the Chronicle she included the Kiwirail, bus and Air New Zealand logos for authenticity after getting permission to use them in her picture book. “Now they all want to see the book,” she laughed.

She also added in the foreword – “for all the mind-travellers in the world” – a descriptive quote of Aotearoa by Kiwi musician Tim Finn; and an epilogue from the winning song ‘Aroha I Aotearoa’ in the Hook, Line and Sing-a-long 2021 music competition.

Publication of ‘The Mind-Traveller New Zealand’ signifies for Astrid the wrappingup of her own Kiwi adventures – she’s experienced most of Jae’s destinations for

herself – and the start of a new chapter of her life south of Bodø, which is in Norway near the Arctic Circle.

No prizes for guessing where in the world the next book in this children’s series is likely to be set.

Originally from the Netherlands, Astrid says she doesn’t need to live in her country of birth, which is small and too crowded now for her liking.

“I love space and nature,” she admits.

Astrid, her doctor husband Jan and their four children lived in Norway – though farther south – before coming to New Zealand in 2011.

She and Jan will depart with youngest daughter Isabeau just as soon as the family dog is booked on a flight, but son Yme will stay on for a year while he completes a degree at Waikato University.

Oldest son Halcyon is already living in Norway and his sister Najade, who has illustrated both books so far, is a veterinary student in the Netherlands.

Three of the four siblings have been students at Raglan Area School – Halcyon was past school age by the time the family arrived in the country.

Astrid received the proofs of ‘The MindTraveller New Zealand’ early this week.

She’s using the same Nelson printing company as with her first book, ‘The MindTraveller Cambodia’, and says there’ll again be both hard and softcover versions.

“We like to keep it local,” she insists.

Billy chases ninth title at Community Nationals to break own record A spicy tip to save Surfing New Zealand

wo of New Zealand’s most celebrated surfers head to the 2022 National Surfing Championships targeting two distinctly different goals this year.

Raglan’s Billy Stairmand goes on the hunt to break his own record of eight titles. On the flipside, New Zealand’s most successful surfer, Taranaki’s Paige Hareb, a seven-time World Tour veteran, goes on the hunt for her first.

The 59th edition of the New Zealand National Surfing Championships will be staged at Westport from the 11th – 15th January, only the second time the event has been held on the West Coast of the South Island.

Both Stairmand and Hareb are gearing up for the World Surf League Regional Qualifying Series which commences in Australia early February. The National Championships has been a mainstay in Stairmand’s preparation for international events while Hareb has often been unable to compete due to international commitments, limiting her chances to snare a title.

Entries into the event have exceeded 300 with less than a week to go until the event commences.

The two star-powered surfers will be up against some of the strongest domestic talent who are eager to put their name on the most prestigious surfing trophies in New Zealand.

Stairmand will fend off the likes of Taranaki’s Daniel Farr who has finalled at the event before but is yet to break through for a win, such has been Stairmand’s recent dominance of the event which dates back to his first win in 2010. Since 2010, only three other surfers have taken a title – Jay Quinn (2011 and 2013), Ricardo Christie (2018) and Elliot Paerata – Reid (2020).

“The Nationals is the type of event where we wouldn’t be surprised if a number of participants from 1997 make their way back to Westport with fond memories and take part, most likely in the senior divisions now” commented Surfing New Zealand’s Ben Kennings.

“Not only will they compete, but they will bring their family and children who will carry on the summer tradition” he added.

Gisborne Boardriders will defend the club title which will be hotly contested by several leading clubs from Raglan, Auckland, Mount Maunganui, Christchurch, Dunedin and the hometown Buller Boardriders. Also up for grabs at the Championships is the Peter Byers Overall Performance of the Event Award.

n Saturday 20 December our last big day took place.

The chartered club open tournament attracted 22 teams of 4, from all parts of the Waikato.

The tournament was rescheduled from the previous Thursday due to bad

weather, and what a wonderful sunny day we all enjoyed.

Winners, were from the Quota Club in Te Kuiti and the top local team was Ross Turner, Heather Dalbeth, Murray Eddy and Des Bishop with Sharon Llewellyn subbing part of the day.

Eleven young women aged 12-18, will be selected from across New Zealand to join the ANZ Next XI. They’ll be invited to an exclusive WHITE FERNS junior training

Extension of consultation timeframes for Dog Control Bylaw and Policy Waikato District Council is currently consulting on our Dog Control Bylaw 2015 and Policy 2022.

These documents set out how we manage dogs in the district. A number of changes are proposed, including where dogs are allowed, and limiting the number of dogs kept in rural areas to two (Note: there are some exemptions, including working dogs). New dog exercise areas are suggested in Tuakau and Tamahere, and there are changes proposed to some of the current dog exercise areas in Tuakau, Taupiri, Ngaruawahia, Newcastle, Raglan and Tamahere.

This newly created part time role (15- 20 hours per week) will take accountability for Funding Applications, on time quality reporting, internal systems and processes, general administration & bookkeeping, as well as actively contributing to organisational improvements and team initiatives. This role is effectively the ‘behind the scenes’ engine room for WEC and will be remunerated accordingly.

The right person will have a can-do positive attitude, excellent communication skills, genuinely enjoy keeping things organised, have the ability to interpret requirements and create a compelling written story, and have a proven track record of delivering tasks on time.

RAGLAN CHRONICLE / LOCAL RAG UPCOMING PUBLICATION

Waikato Regional Council advises that under Resource Consent 124871 spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months.

SCHEDULE: January

Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Regional Pest Management Plan and include (but are not limited to): alligator weed, Manchurian wild rice, sagittaria, Senegal tea, spartina and yellow flag iris. Herbicides to be used are haloxyfop, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl and triclopyr. Application method is location dependent and may be by helicopter, gun and hose, mistblower or knapsack.

Decision Notification

Pursuant to clause 10(4)(b) of Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act 1991, Waikato District Council gives notice that on 17 January 2022 it made a Decision on the provisions and matters raised in submissions and further submissions relating to Stages 1 and 2 of the Proposed Waikato District Plan (“PDP”).

This Decision concerns all parts of the PDP except for the decisions on the: a. Raglan Landward Navigation Beacon, which was notified on 31 July 2020; and b. Ohinewai Rezoning and Development provisions relating to submission no. 764 by Ambury Properties Limited and further submissions on that submission, which was notified on 24 May 2021.
