appy New Year from the Raglan Police.

As expected, we have had a busy few weeks with a large influx of visitors and the various calls for service that go with that. However, for the most part it has been peaceful, and most people have been well behaved.

On the 1st of January Police responded to a serious incident at Manu Bay. We would like to thank the many members of the community that assisted Police. It was clear that almost no one stands for that type of behaviour in our community, and we were inundated with assistance – a good example of working in partnership - so thank you. We were pleased that we were able to bring the individual into custody within 24 hours and it is now going through the court process.

Please remember that the roads remain busy, and it will continue to be busy throughout the summer period.

It is important to be considerate and apply some common sense, if you want to take in the views or just go slow, that is fine, but allow traffic behind you to pass by pulling over; this could be intersections, laybys, large driveways etc. You can also use the slow-vehicle lanes for their intended purpose, enter the lane, slow right down, and let all the traffic go, that’s its purpose.

The liquor ban remains in force in the CBD and is an instant $250 fine if you possess or consume alcohol in these areas.

Dedication service marks pillbox signage unveiling

t has sat half-buried and seemingly half-forgotten for many decades but now a concrete bunker on the beach flanking Raglan Holiday Park Papahua has been officially exposed for what it is – an important part of Whaingaroa’s wartime history.

The pillbox, as it’s colloquially known, was briefly the centre of attention recently when a handful of Raglan Returned Services Association stalwarts turned out to mark the unveiling of signage both on the fortified structure itself and at the start of a nearby walkway across from the Papahua sports grounds.

The dedication service for the new signage –which is in both te reo and English – also included a blessing by local kaumatua Sean Ellison.

Sean revealed how a second pillbox existed further along the beach at Wainamu – under the trees out from the Kokiri centre – but was now completely buried beneath the sand. “It was (visible) like this one when I was a boy,” he told the Chronicle.

RSA president Saen O’Brien confirmed in his dedication speech that two pillboxes were indeed strategically positioned at either end of the beach primarily to safeguard the Raglan airfield, which he said was constructed as an emergency aerodrome in October 1941.

He explained how some 340 pillboxes, also known as machine gun posts, were built in the early 1940s by the New Zealand Army and the Home Guard at strategic coastal locations around the country.

They were constructed because of fears of Japanese invasion.

But unlike many of the pillboxes, Raglan’s shelters were left “in-situ” post World War ll.

The pillboxes were designed as concrete dug-in guard posts, and normally equipped with loopholes through which to fire weapons, Saen said. They were often camouflaged to conceal their location and maximise the element of surprise.

“The originally jocular name arose from their perceived similarity to the cylindrical and hexagonal boxes in which medical pills were once sold,” he added.

RSA secretary-treasurer Noleen McCathie told the Chronicle these pillboxes were an intrinsic part of Raglan’s history. “It is important that it is made known,” she said.

The Papahua-area pillbox – a popular target for graffiti artists – may be slumping more with each passing year but the RSA

plans ultimately to lift it up, as a proud monument of the past.

The signage project was funded by Raglan RSA, while the Waikato District Council provided a concrete plinth for the sign by the walkway. Both signs were made by Raglan Engineering, with graphic design by Raglan Sign Company.

Raglan Excavations: new generation now at helm of burgeoning local business

I

t’s a family business that started out from Rob Poolton’s backyard in Te Mata three decades ago with just the one machine. Now Raglan Excavations has four diggers, three tip trucks and a transporter all operating out of a yard at Nau Mai, with son Lee at the controls of the company.

Lee’s proud to have been able to buy the business recently, after the sudden death of his father almost two years ago

which left things “ticking over” but in limbo. And he reckons that while it’s pretty good being the boss these days, he’s had big boots to fill.

Rob had been ready to retire and was going to ease his son into the role, Lee explains, “but I ended up having to transition myself in”. And going from “sidekick” to boss was not without its challenges, he admits.

Rather than just being the “man on the machine” – his job while working 20 years for his father – the 44 year old also had to take on the project management side of the business.

It was a steep learning curve but Lee’s got wife Jess behind him, doing the books and generally helping out with a business that now boasts a staff of 13.

His mother Noeline has also played a big part in the business until now, handling the accounts.

“She was Dad’s handbrake,” Lee jokes. “She made sure he didn’t buy too many boats (for which he had a weakness).”

Noeline currently owns the Raglan Excavations yard – it’s her nest egg, Lee says – and leases the space to Lee and Jess.

The couple met at the Fieldays Rural Bachelor of the Year contest when Lee was 29. “I was down on all fours trying to scull beer as fast as I could through a calf feeder,” he laughs, “and Jess was holding the calf feeder”.

They now have two daughters: Sophie,10, and Emily, 6, who both go to Raglan Area School.

Lee himself attended Te Mata School before going over the divvy to Hamilton Boys’ High.

The “big kid”, as he calls himself, reckons he’s always loved machines “and just never grew out of them”. Now every day he typically has excavators and trucks working at different sites all over Raglan.

The business has built up a substantial clientele over the years, though there has been a subtle move from country to town. “While Dad used to concentrate his work on the farming clientele with maintenance and so on, there’s been a recent shift towards more residential work,” says Lee. A constant reminder of Rob remains in the business in the form of his old Kenworth transporter, adds Lee.”It was Dad’s pride and joy.”

And as homage to that, ‘Poppa Rob’ has recently been inscribed across the front of the big rig courtesy of Raglan Sign Company.

Junior golf coaching roundup

ver 350 entries have been received for the event which takes place from Sunday 7th January through until Saturday 13th January in Dunedin at St Clair Beach. It is the ninth time the event has been staged at Dunedin, dating back to 1978.

Raglan’s Point Boardriders are the defending club champions from the 2023 event. With the event being held in the South Island this year, the likes of hosts South Coast Boardriders will be eager to take the title and challenge perennial front runners including the defending champions, Bay Boardriders and New Plymouth Surfriders.

Local success.

Raglan’s Geoff Hutchison won his fifth national title in the Over 60 Men’s Division. The final was another nailbiter with Hutchison getting a last minute six-point ride to jump from third to first and drop Barry McCullouch (Tai) back to second after leading for almost 25 minutes in search of his first national title. Jack Griffiths (Auck) finished in third place ahead of Neill Robb (Chch) in fourth.

Raglan’s Kiri Binnersley won the Over 30 Women’s Division with Lucy Te Moananui (Kaik) finishing runner up.

Waikato Screen brings film action to the region

he Waikato region is about to make a significant mark on the international movie industry, thanks to the efforts of Waikato Screen, the recently established Regional Film Office. Waikato Screen aims to connect national and international film productions with the rich talent pool and diverse landscapes of the Mighty Waikato.

Erin Griffiths, one of the directors and a Te Uku resident, spearheads Waikato Screen's initiatives, which include film location scouting, linking production crews with local talent and businesses, as well as facilitating collaboration with local iwi, stakeholders and councils in the Waikato region. The ultimate goal is to enhance communication, stimulate economic development, and support and promote the wealth of talent within the region.

To kick things off in Raglan for 2024, a Japanese film crew is embarking on the production of a Netflix live-action romance series titled 'Beyond Goodbye.' Starting on 15 January and lasting for five days, the production will utilise the breath-taking vistas of Whāingaroa as a backdrop. Starring popular Japanese actors Kasumi Arimura and Kentaro Sakaguchi, the series explores the poignant tale of two lives entwined by fate.

While 'Beyond Goodbye' is set in another place, Erin explains that finding diverse locations is crucial in the film industry. "It's not just about how beautiful a location is, it's about how much it can resemble somewhere else. As with actors acting as someone else, places often pretend to be somewhere else," she says.

“We have been working with the New Zealand and Japanese teams to ensure they utilise as many of the local businesses as possible, fill short term crew positions with locals, ensure local hapu are on board and their short stay will benefit our little town.”

Waikato Screen's previous success includes facilitating the production of 'The Gone’, based in Te Aroha, which injected a million dollars directly into the local community over a sixweek period. These productions significantly benefit local businesses, including cafes,

restaurants, catering services, rentals, hardware stores, accommodation and more.

As a not-for-profit organisation, Waikato Screen is committed to benefiting the region by attracting international film crews seeking unique Aotearoa locations. It joins the Regional Film Offices of New Zealand, collectively working to draw screen business, talent and investment to the country.

Erin Griffiths says Waikato Screen faced numerous challenges during the initial stages.

"We didn't have support for the film industry in the Waikato before we started Waikato Screen. It can be challenging to navigate between councils and stakeholders; our role is to facilitate and guide, making it easier for them to use our region.”

Waikato Screen previously worked on ‘Avatar – Ways of Water ’, ‘No Exit’ a thriller in Tokoroa, also Amazon’s ‘Don’t make me Go’, to name a few. “We also assist local productions including short films, TV commercials, music videos, etc, and continually build the reputation of the Waikato as a filming destination,” Erin says.

The hard work is paying off, with international production companies now considering the Waikato region for future projects. Erin, along with Tracy Hampton, an executive producer with extensive screen sector industry experience and Hamilton-based director and cinematographer Jack Barry, are driving Waikato Screen's success.

Recognising the importance of supporting the international film industry's work in New Zealand, Waikato Screen is launching a youth training programme this year.

"To create career pathways into the screen industry, we are holding workshops at 15 schools in the Waikato. Additionally, we are supporting local professionals by providing high-end training to keep them up-to-date."

Waikato Screen's initiatives not only bring international attention to the region but also foster economic growth, create job opportunities, and provide valuable training for aspiring individuals in the film industry. The Mighty Waikato is poised to become a sought-after destination for filmmakers worldwide, thanks to the efforts of Waikato Screen and its dedicated team.

appy New Year to everyone. A sincere thank you to those who purchased our exceptional stock in December. Your purchases not only brought joy to the recipients but also greatly supported our dedicated creators.

The summer season in Raglan always brings a flurry of activity, particularly at IHub. Here, both locals and visitors seek information and respite from the heat, often enjoying the cool comfort of our airconditioned space. Our volunteers encounter a diverse array of individuals, from fellow New Zealanders to international travellers.

We recently had the pleasure of assisting young adventurers from Germany. Raglan came highly recommended to them, and after arriving by bus from Hamilton, they expressed concerns about their return journey. Thankfully, our knowledgeable volunteer was able to provide them with essential information, including a helpful app recommendation. Interestingly, these travellers shared their admiration for New Zealand's public transport system, contrasting it with challenges faced by German railways, which have gained notoriety for delays and inconsistencies.

Another German visitor spending time camping here in Raglan was chatting to our volunteer and mentioned he was looking for a sleeping mat to make his camping experience more comfortable. She told him that she had acquired her own from Xtreme Zero Waste - Kahu’s Nest - so contacted them to see if they had more available. To the delight and surprise of the visitor, they were able

to provide him with one at the cost of $4.

Initially he thought he was only renting the mat at such a low cost but finding out that it was his to keep was a pleasing result.

Americans often discover our appealing village after touching down in Auckland and seeking an escape from the rat race. One such visitor arrived on the inaugural Delta flight, enticed by a special package. Despite having just a week to explore, he found Raglan's unique vibe so captivating that he's already planning a return trip with his partner.

A charming American man was intrigued by a piece of local history: technology developed by a resident back in the '70s. This innovation aimed to provide surfers with realtime updates on wave conditions, preventing wasted trips and conserving petrol. For those of us who can recall, this era also introduced carless days, a response to the oil crisis in the Middle East. Remarkably, that innovative technology remains in use, a testament to its enduring relevance and utility.

A traveller from the Netherlands particularly appreciated our collection of recycled clothing and assorted items.

She couldn't help but admire the lovely jewellery on display. However, she expressed some reservations about carrying an item containing paua into Australia, given their stringent regulations on shell products. Given that many New Zealanders frequently travel with and wear paua-containing items, her concerns were likely unwarranted.

Some Australians found themselves slightly puzzled by the pronunciation of certain Māori words, especially the 'wh' sound. While it sparked some light-hearted

moments, they were genuinely eager to grasp the correct pronunciations of our local names.

It's a common experience for travellers encountering Indigenous languages in other countries.

We're indebted to Lisa Thomson for shedding light on Raglan's Māori name for one of our enquirers. Lord Raglan certainly never set foot in this region. Initially named Putoetoe, it commemorated the vast abundance of toetoe upon the settlers' arrival. The name Whangaroa, relating to the harbour and coastal area and was changed to Whaingaora by the missionaries of the time. This change was to distinguish it from another Whangaroa further north, a bustling trading harbour, much like the one Raglan boasted during that era, ensuring clarity in trade communications.

One of the season's most unexpected visitors was a sizable, unleashed dog who took a keen interest in a tiny toy puppy sitting at our entrance. Being curious he crouched down, approaching the miniature figure with deliberate caution, aiming for a gentle nose-to-nose inspection. Upon realizing the toy wasn't responsive, he sauntered away, in search of livelier company down the road in town.

Raglan Museum Exhibition: How to Save the Planet

A Dairy farmers are grabbing their surfboards for this summer’s Surfing for Farmers season at Raglan. Farmers Jason Dickey and Jay Crowhurst are pictured holding surfboards, flanked on either side by DairyNZ farm performance representatives Kylie Brewer and Kent Weston-Arnold.

airy farmers will be catching waves this summer when the annual Raglan Surfing for Farmers season kicks off.

Surfing for Farmers is a national initiative where hundreds of farmers around the country get off the farm and have fun. Industry good organisation DairyNZ is one of many organisations and businesses supporting the initiative nationwide.

Raglan dairy farmer Jason Dickey says he’s looking forward to hitting the surf and improving his skills. It’s his second year and he’s enjoying learning a new skill.

“It’s great to get away from the farm and do something completely different. I enjoy catching up with everyone, walking on the beach and watching the waves then jumping in. I’ve never been a water person, so it’s great to give surfing a go and challenge myself,” says Jason. Jason’s wife Kelly helps organise the events.

Raglan organiser Matte Kirk, a former dairy farmer now working as a rural professional, started Surfing for Farmers in Raglan a year after the initiative began in Gisborne five years ago. Farmers now take part at 27 locations nationwide.

Matte has been a surfer all his life. He says it has so many positives, including exercise and relaxation, and he loves sharing it with others.

“It’s great to see farmers at the beach after a hard day’s work, getting into the ocean for an hour or so, then enjoying a BBQ and camaraderie with other farmers, friends and family. They get a lot out of being in a new environment and learning new skills,” says Matte.

Around 20 to 60 farmers come along each week to Raglan. Those who haven’t surfed before get a lesson. Sessions run once a week over December, February and March.

Farmers come from all over Waikato to attend, including from Te Awamutu, Ōhaupō and Pirongia. Ōhaupō farmer Andrew Young says it’s great to see people of all ages and levels of surfing experience taking part.

“I love being out in the water. The waves are different every time which adds to the challenge.

When they’re really big, it takes more energy to catch a wave so you get great exercise and a sense of achievement. I really encourage everyone to give surfing a go.”

This season, DairyNZ is supporting Surfing for Farmers in eight regions – Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Lower North Island, West Coast, Canterbury and Southland.

“It’s a great initiative supporting farmers’ wellbeing where they spend quality time in their community doing something different,” says DairyNZ GM farm performance Sarah Speight.

“Support from the partners in this positive initiative is a great example of the collective spirit of our sector to support each other,” she says.

A large number of organisations support Surfing for Farmers including premium sponsors Fonterra, Beef and Lamb New Zealand, Jarden, Ballance, Bayleys and Rabobank. Rural Support is a community partner and 10 grassroots partners including DairyNZ. Many local businesses also support the initiative in their regions.

visit to the bright red Western Bay Museum in Katikati on a wet November morning was the inspiration for the upcoming exhibition at our Raglan and Districts Museum.

we didn’t have a van. But, in the spirit of the exhibition, some negotiation saw the boards being delivered by the Katikati printer who designed them in exchange for a couple of nights’ free accommodation in our lovely town!

Entitled “How to save the planet - what we can learn from our grandparents”, it used a combination of beautiful brightly coloured poster boards, domestic artefacts from their collections and items donated by various “local heroes” who are contributing to saving the planet at present.

Volunteers offered to interview members of the numerous local organisations working to protect and save our environment. Upwards of 25 groups were identified. Some of them work independently and many of them are supported by the Whaingaroa Environment Centre and Xtreme Zero Waste. It has been a fascinating and heartening exercise to speak to the many people - mostly volunteers - who work so hard to ensure that little is wasted and existing resources are well utilised. From Toy Libraries to Crop Swaps, Repair cafes to Community Gardens, it is clear that Raglan people are fully committed to saving the planet…and this often involves doing exactly what our grandparents taught us. A great example of this is The Raglan Upcycling group. They initially sewed bags when Raglan went plastic-bag free, and they now repurpose op shop clothing for resale.

The more I saw, the more excited I became. It seemed that this exhibition was made for Raglan! Surely there can be few other towns in Aotearoa that are so committed to caring for our community and for our world. With Xtreme Zero Waste’s commitment to “Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Repair” and the Whaingaroa Environment Centre’s passion for environmental education and building a sustainable community, we have any number of our own local heroes to showcase.

After some discussion with our museum committee, staff and volunteers, I contacted Paula Gaelic (Curator/Manager of the Western Bay Museum) to ask whether they would be prepared to share their resources once they took the exhibition down.

This request seemed to fit well with the philosophy of reusing or recycling existing resources, rather than starting from scratch. This made sense to the good people in the Bay of Plenty too. It seemed that the exhibition had already travelled to the Waiouru Army Museum, so there was no reason why Raglan couldn’t be next in line.

Obtaining the poster boards was the next challenge. They were too big to fit in the back of a station wagon, and

So whilst we are able to use the generic posters that we borrowed from Katikati, we are presently designing the posters that will showcase our own “Local Guardians” or kaitiaki.

We will also be accessing artefacts from our own museum collections and borrowing others from the local organisations.

We expect to mount the exhibition by early February and we look forward to showcasing the excellent work of our local guardians by inviting them, plus members of the public, to the opening. This will be a great opportunity to affirm them in the work they do today, whilst also honouring the way our forebears lived.

Daffodils and Wiri Donnalice at The Yard Raglan D

affodils and Wiri Donna are embarking on a long awaited romp in the regions, with a summer tour across Aotearoa.

This road test of new material for upcoming releases in 2024 will involve the two bands parking up in Napier, Leigh, Kerikeri, Raglan, Wellington and Taupō between 11 and 20 January 2024.

Daffodils are one of those bands that everyone thinks they discovered first. Their debut EP “Boys” dropped in 2019 BC (Before COVID-19) and the future was bright. New Zealand’s best kept secret. Since the release of that EP it’s fair to say the world as we know it (and the band themselves) have fundamentally changed.

Daffodils have shared the stage for international artists from Foals to Orville Peck, Wet Leg to IDLES. They’ve headlined shows across Aotearoa, performed across the East Coast of Australia, and entertained the masses at a slew of festivals including Laneway Festival, Nest Fest, Rhythm & Vines, and more.

Wiri Donna’s journey from indie folk to alt rock has been nothing short of electrifying.

Led by songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, Bianca Bailey, and featuring the incredible talents of Harrison Scholes (Arjuna Oakes, TOI), James MacEwan (Arjuna Oakes), and Elliott Dawson, this four-piece powerhouse has unparalleled energy.

Wiri Donna have recently supported heavy hitters such as Fontaines D.C, Skegss, & The Beths, and graced stages at Rhythm & Vines,

Twisted Frequency, and the TSB Festival of Lights. Their captivating performances are a breath of fresh air, and it's no surprise they were named finalists for the Taite Music Prize’s Best Independent Debut award.

Both bands released smash hits in 2022.

Daffodils “Stay The Night” was confident, reflective and melodic collection songs full of main character moments. Wiri Donna’s debut EP, "Being Alone," was described by Rolling Stone as one of the fiercest feminist releases of the year. Looking forward, Daffodils are set to release their debut album, and Wiri Donna is putting finishing touches on a sophomore EP that’s sure to shake things up.

The only chance to see these bands prior to their new eras is this summer.

he title, inspired by the geological wonder of elevated coral reefs surrounding Pacific Islands, holds personal significance for the artists, linking them to their ancestral connections with islands boasting these unique limestone formations.

Sharon O’Brien from the Wharf Gallery explains: "It is a captivating exhibition featuring the distinctive artistic expressions of both artists."

Marcus Hipa, a Niuean artist, weaves a rich tapestry of creativity shaped by his upbringing in Alofi, Niue Island, and his academic journey at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, New Zealand.

Through mediums such as drawing, painting, and carving, Marcus explores and shares profound insights into his people’s history and culture. His art serves as a celebration of values, traditions, progress, and community, shedding light on social and political issues affecting Pacific communities both in their home region and in Aotearoa.

Sefton Rani, a Cook Island artist, embarks on unchartered territories with his innovative use of dried paint skin material and industrial detritus. Discovered while working in a paint

factory, this unique material forms the basis of his “urban tapa” artworks.

Sefton’s abstract compositions serve as a commentary on a spectrum of issues spanning the past, present, and potential future trajectories. His works touch on themes such as migrant labour, black birding, cultural identity removal, and the aftermath of natural disasters like cyclone Gabrielle.

Critics and art enthusiasts alike have been captivated by the distinctive approaches of Sefton and Marcus. Described as “eclectic”, “punk”, and “visceral”, their work has been lauded for its technical brilliance and unapologetic narrative.

Noteworthy art critic Andrew Paul Wood hails their work as “magnificent”, while Charles Darwin recognises its complexity and subtlety.

Sharon adds, "Sefton and Marcus’ global vision and narrative expand the definition of Pacific art, making it relevant to a broad audience and contributing to the evolving Pacific footprint on the global stage."

YES, dogs can literally cook!!! It doesn’t take long for a dog’s core temperature to rise so much that its internal organs and brain begin to shut down, and it’s too late to treat. Heatstroke is an EMERGENCY. PREVENTION is safer!

1.

Walk your dog EARLY morning or LATE evening – avoid going anywhere during the hottest part of the day.

2.

Avoid play with other dogs in the heat of the day.

3.

Avoid Pavements and Beaches (black sand especially) - your dog’s paws will Burn.

4.

DON’T leave your dog in the car or back of a ute, even if they are usually, or have windows open/air. It just takes ONE time DON’T GAMBLE!

5.

Keep water with you at ALL times, and towels (to soak and wrap around body if starting to overheat) 6. Use sunblock on pink/ white noses. Be careful with white faces, around the eyes.

7. For ALL YOUR FUR BABIES - Always make sure they have a cool shelter, if in a kennel or at home - windows open and access to water.

o you’ve spent too much over the holidays... the credit card or cards are maxed out, there’s a car loan and you couldn’t resist the new boat that you put on finance.

The financial squeeze is on and you’re feeling the pressure. Everyone knows someone in that situation, but often they’ll hide it until it’s too late and the debt collectors are called in or the house goes to mortgagee sale.

What to do?

There can be inertia when it comes to reaching out for help because it’s embarrassing to let others know that your financial life is in bad shape. But getting help to understand your options may not only get you out of the pickle but also help to avoid future pickles.

There are numerous ways to ease the pressure, finding the best way is key. Here are a few common options: 1: Speak with a Budget Adviser. Raglan Community House has a Financial Mentor who can assist (free of charge) with creating a budget and helping you stick to it, help you create financial goals and even offer interest free loans to refinance high interest consumer debt to take the pressure off. There may be limits to this and more substantial debt may not qualify for this.

2: Pay off your most expensive debt first. If you’re overpaying your mortgage it may work out better to reduce those payments and pay down the consumer debt quicker. Once gone, increase your mortgage payments again if you’re able.

The road up to the Wainui Reserve will be closed from 8pm-6am Friday 19th Jan and Saturday 20th Jan 2024, unless you have the appropriate festival car pass. There is no general parking for festival attendees onsite it is reserved for those with camping and appropriate car passes.

For those who live locally or have alternative accommodation cars can be parked at the Raglan Airfield and free shuttles are provided to and from the festival site. Please be aware there may be heavy traffic during peak times predicted between 8am - 1pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
