Child Cancer Foundation seeking volunteers for 2024 Street Appeal from Child Cancer Foundation

C

hild Cancer Foundation’s 2024 Street Appeal is taking place on Friday 8 & Saturday 9 March, and they need volunteers across the country to help collect donations for Kiwi families impacted by childhood cancer.

The Street Appeal is the Foundation’s biggest fundraising event of the year, where hundreds of volunteers take to the streets to raise critical funds.

“Every week this year, three Kiwi families will be told the heartbreaking news that their child has cancer,” said Child Cancer Foundation Chief Executive, Monica Briggs.

“We don’t receive any direct government funding, so these families rely on the generosity of their fellow Kiwis to receive the vital emotional and practical support they need during the toughest time in their lives.”

The Foundation is currently supporting around 1,100 families nationwide through all stages of their experience with childhood cancer.

Getting involved in the charity’s Street Appeal is easy – simply gift two hours of your time to volunteer at a collection site near you.

“It’s a lot of fun, and every dollar you collect will make a real difference for

S

ince opening his sandwich store the week before Labour Weekend last year, Hata Puriri reckons he’s found his calling.

He’s the Bad Brother behind the sign down the lane and after growing up in the US, he knows a good sandwich when he sees one.

“There are heaps of regional sandwiches,” he says.

“California has their own scene, Utah has their own scene, East Coast has their own scene. One of my favourite places to go is a restaurant called The Hat in east LA, San Bernadino County. They do the best pastrami sandwiches you’ve ever had in your life. So yeah, I have a pretty big passion, not just for sandwiches, but I like real interesting food.”

“I love what the Latino community do in California and then I was like, what can I do? I really wanted to try something creative but I’m not talented in any of the arts.”

That was about a year ago and several things fell into place to make Bad Brother a reality.

“Annika (sister) and mum (Teresa of Roll Up fame) had closed Clover, and mum was thinking about giving the lease up. So I told mum, don’t give up the space.”

After leaving his previous job, where he’d worked for 14 years, he says “For the first time in my life I actually got to choose what I want to do as a vocation.”

“I kind of just naturally fell into everything else but this was something to push myself and be a creative outlet in a different way.”

After heaps of research into how to merge the best from the US with great local products, Bad Brother was born with half a dozen sandwich selections on offer, including the two top toasties, the barbecue brisket and the Reuben.

“The Reuben’s our most classic. I try and make it not super traditionally but with all the traditional ingredients; I’m really proud of that one. And with the brisket, I saw the beautiful bread that my baker was making and thought ‘what can I put on this’. I looked at pulled pork, but beef’s a little cheaper, has a lot more room for error and was simpler for me to do. And the flavours you can add to it are really easy. It’s been our busiest item for two months now. None of the flavours get old and it ticks a lot of boxes for different tastes. And it’s flippin’ massive so you feel like you’re going to get value for money.”

While he’s loving what he’s doing, Hata is quick to acknowledge the help he’s received from whānau and friends.

“I’m very, very blessed and there’s not enough credit I can give to Annika and my

Personally the hardest things were the organisation and the processes that I had to learn in the beginning. I really thought that I had it all in my brain, what I needed to do, but I realised that the cup was pretty empty, and it’s still pretty empty but it gets filled with a lot of wisdom and knowledge from my mum and (sister) Kiera; they’ve probably been my two biggest supports.”

And while there have been stressful times as he’s learned the ropes, he couldn’t be happier.

“This doesn’t even feel like a job. It’s really freeing. I don’t feel like I’m boxed in and I don’t feel like there’re limits. It’s so much more satisfying than the set tasks and the goals that I had to hit over and over in my last job. Like, if we don’t want to do something, let’s change it up, do something else.”

And Hata’s top tips for a tip top toastie?

“It’s all in the bread. The better the bread that you can get, it’s going to hide a lot of the sins of whatever you put inside. It’s the great equaliser. The key to a good toastie for me is toast your bread perfectly. Butter on your hot grill. If you just get a really beautiful cheese and really nice bread, 99% of the time you’re going to be stoked. So all the other fillings, whether it’s onion or meat or something else, is a bonus bro.”

SH23 Raglan Road rebuild works and night time closures Waka Kotahi - New Zealand Transport Agency

W

ork is set to start on State Highway 23 near Maungatawhiri Road from Monday 12 February for 3 weeks, with a mix of stop/go traffic management and night closures.

Closing the road connecting Raglan to the rest of the Waikato is the only way to undertake these much-needed works, explains Andy Oakley, Waikato System Manager at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

“Raglan locals will know there has been regular work at this site over the last few years to reseal the road. We’re at a stage now that a complete rebuild of this part of SH23 is needed,” says Mr Oakley.

“Closing the highway will be an inconvenience for everyone getting in and out on Raglan. We have worked closely with our contractor to try to reduce the disruption while getting these works done as quickly as possible.

“This is the only way into Raglan, and there is no suitable detour available. During roadclosures vehicles will be escorted through the worksite at certain times. We’re confident this will help to minimise the disruption the works will cause.

“We thank residents and drivers for their understanding and patience while these critical works are completed. I encourage everyone to check the NZTA Journey Planner on the day of their travel to see the latest road and traffic conditions before they set out on their journey,” says Mr Oakley.

Work on SH23 will happen across two key phases: Phase 1: Preparation work including kerb and channel and subsoil drainage works. This phase of the work is expected to take two weeks to complete and will be carried out during the day between 7am and 5pm under Stop/Go traffic management. This work is programmed to commence 12 February 2024 and is weather and resource dependent.

From Monday 12 February to Saturday 24 February: stop/go traffic management will be in place between 7am and 5pm each day.

This will allow crews to do preparation work, including kerb, channel and subsoil drainage works. Drivers will be able to pass through the site.

Phase 2: From Sunday 25 February to Friday 1 March, and Sunday 3 March to Friday 8 March, SH23 will be closed between 9pm and 5am between houses #4095 and #4180, including access to Maungatawhiri Road.

This will allow crews to remove existing road layers and replace them. Vehicles will be allowed through the worksite at 9.45pm, 11pm, 1am and 3am. Vehicles will need to be at the closure points at either end of the site and Maungatawhiri Road intersection at these times and will be escorted through the worksite. Once the queue is through the site the closure will re-start until the next opening time.

Further work to complete a second layer of seal on the road will be undertaken next summer (2024/25).

“Emergency services will be given priority access at all times through the work site.

Regional council proposes resilience and efficiency-focus in long term 10-year plan Waikato Regional Council

our days of talks have wrapped up, with Waikato regional councillors agreeing a proposed 10-year budget with a 6 per cent rates rise from current ratepayers in 2024/25.

Councillors heard how the proposed increase in the first year of the 2024-2034 Long Term Plan had been heavily influenced by a 5.7 per cent increase in baseline costs.

Waikato Regional Council Chief Executive Chris McLay said the organisation was committed to putting forward a 10-year plan focused on resilience and efficiency.

“The reality of high inflation is that we’re having to spend more to continue delivering the same services, just as we know the cost of living for our ratepayers has gone up.

“But we also know we must keep moving forward to meet the expectations of our communities and the challenges ahead, so we are proposing some new work in areas we believe matter most.”

Chair Pamela Storey agreed, saying: “I believe we have delivered a draft LTP that focuses on resilience, efficiency, cost effectiveness and strategic investment in areas that are important to the rohe, now and into the future.

“While we have recognised the need for financial prudence to address affordability issues throughout our community, our organisation has statutory obligations that must be met and areas of significant concern and interest to our wider community that need to be responded to.

“We are proposing to invest more in biodiversity and biosecurity, protecting and preserving taonga species and locations in our region. We’ve recognised that one of the most effective ways of doing that is in partnership with other organisations and groups committed to undertaking this work alongside us.

“We have also recognised investment in science to provide an evidence-based foundation for our policies and decision making, and that ensuring well-planned and effective public transport, in all of its forms, is vitally important. Maritime officer numbers have also been bolstered in the proposed budget to ease the load on the team keeping our waterways safe.”

During consultation from 2 April to 2 May, the council will also seek feedback on: • funding of $500,000 per annum for three years for Te Waka economic development agency

• ceasing the regional development fund established in 2015 • picking up the rating of public transport from local councils.

Critical to the region’s resilience is the infrastructure assets and nature-based solutions that help safeguard communities.

A draft infrastructure strategy adopted by councillors makes it clear the way infrastructure is invested in, managed and paid for must fundamentally change.

Over the next 50 years, it is expected over $1 billion would be needed for the replacement of some assets, and a further $1.87 billion on ongoing operating and maintenance costs, and depreciation.

“Simply replacing or repairing assets, as we have done in the past, may no longer be economically or environmentally sustainable, affordable, or workable. So we are planning for the future for our ever-growing population, the climate resilience of our communities and the productive capacity of our economy and we are not shying away from the hard conversations, such as how we provide for cost-effective, affordable infrastructure,” Cr Storey said.

Councillors heard that the council’s borrowing profile would see a substantial

increase over the term of the LTP up to $122 million, with the proposed capital works programme for flood protection and drainage being the main driver.

The capital works programme would focus on much needed projects to maintain and upgrade the council’s $1.2 billion worth of infrastructure assets, 15 per cent of which the report noted were currently in “poor or very poor” condition.

Councillors agreed to a staff recommendation that part of a prior year’s surplus of funds, amounting to $3.8 million, be used to fund important strategic scoping work. Key areas of focus included water security management, a review of how infrastructure is funded, future public transport improvements, options for the rehabilitation of Lake Waikare and the Whangamarino Wetland, and development of a spatial plan business case, in conjunction with other councils, that will support new public transport investment.

Councillors also decided to introduce a 20 per cent increase in fares for bus users, designed to help keep general rates down.

Exercise groups thriving as more retirees choose Raglan lifestyle

The Raglan Light Exercise group celebrated 25 years in 2020.

T

wo long-running recreational groups are reaching new heights – one quite literally – as more older people choose to retire in Whaingaroa.

Both Raglan Ramblers and Raglan Light Exercise Group have unprecedented numbers of enthusiasts meeting up regularly which, members of each say, is not only about maintaining health in older age but also connecting with others in the community.

It’s not uncommon for the Ramblers’ mid-week walks – which take in Raglan, the wider Waikato and even further afield – to see 30 or more at any one time trekking the beach, traipsing across farmland or climbing mountains.

Meantime the twice-weekly exercise sessions indoors at St Peter’s Anglican Church Hall have similar numbers tackling treadmills and exercycles to keep fit and healthy.

Both groups are made up of locals not only in their 60s but also in the 70-80 age bracket, with some even into their 90s.

Longtime light exercise group secretary-treasurer Graham Hubert (Hubie) says regulars of the group – set up nearly 30 years ago under the guidance of Sport Waikato and local medical professionals – were champing at the bit to get back into the health and fitness routines after a three-week Christmas/New Year break.

Regulars depend on the hour-long sessions at St Peter’s for good health and balance, he says. And as a keen fisherman and gardener himself at 77, he knows well the value of keeping active.

The workouts are designed to prevent falls in older people, he explains, but the spin-off is in the social interaction. This is reinforced by the self-catered morning teas after each Thursday session, Graham adds. People chat and arrange to pick one another up if need be and friendships are formed.

“We’ve been out there doing it since 1995 and we’re still going strong,” Graham says proudly of the weekly fitness regime. “We just want to be strong and stable in our own homes as we age.”

Meantime Ramblers’ stalwart John Lawson – who treks unfailingly every week in sandals, no less – says he’s observed in recent years a dramatic increase in numbers (having been part of the group now for more than two decades, although it started 10 years earlier in 1991).

He attributes the rise to the fact that older people from out of town now see Raglan as a desirable place in which to retire, and to more publicity through social media and the like.

There were only ever a handful of people early on, John recalls, and most walks or tramps were quite localised, venturing up Mt Karioi at times or perhaps as far as

Kaniwhaniwha’s Nikau walk and caves in Pirongia Forest Park.

But these days the treks have become more adventurous and also further afield – reflecting the need for variety, exercise and sociability.

While last week’s walk for instance saw walkers summit Te Uku windfarm via the old road (Vandy Rd), this week the Ramblers sandwiched a climb to the top of Rangitoto Island between return trips on Te Huia – the passenger train service between Hamilton and Auckland – and to the island and back by ferry.

And thanks to gold cards, bee cards and AT HOP cards, public transport costs were kept to a minimum.

Next week the Ramblers will scale Mt Te Aroha’s 952m peak, while next month a visit to Arapuni is on the cards.

That’s described in the online programme as “a chance to walk some of the Waikato River Trail, see the dam and cross the long suspension bridge over the gorge”. *Raglan Ramblers meet Wednesdays on the corner of James and Wallis St at 9am before departure to the weekly destination which, if car-sharing, comes at the minimal cost of 10c/km. *Raglan Light Exercise Group meets at St Peter’s Hall on Bow St, Mondays and Thursdays, 10-11am, $4/session.

Born from Girls Rock Camp Aotearoa in 2017 the gender-inclusive music development programme encourages young women, trans, intersex, takatāpui and gender diverse youth to embrace their creativity in a safe space.

Guided by experienced music industry professionals, the newest edition of To The Front is the fourth location in New Zealand to host the programme, following Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Pōneke Wellington and Te Papaioea Palmerston North.

Running from 15 - 19 July 2024 and hosted at Wintec Te Pūkenga School of Media Arts, Music and Performing Arts Department, the Kirikiriroa programme is headed by local musician and audio engineer Lora Thompson. Actively involved in the industry as performer and Audio Engineer, Lora has over 20 years of experience and says she is motivated by the wish “that something like this was available when I was young and starting out.”

“The music industry is still saturated and lead by a lot of men, which is really difficult to navigate as a younger artist who doesn’t fit into that scene,” says Lora, who is now working full time in an academic role as Head of Audio at the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) in Auckland.

She says it’s especially difficult when you’re not living in one of the main cities where the industries are mainly located.

“After starting out in Hamilton, I’m lucky to have had a fair chunk of industry experience in Auckland and Melbourne before coming back home to Hamilton,” she says.

“I hope something like this in Hamilton inspires a whole new generation of industry leaders in Kirikiriroa and the greater Waikato.

There’s just so much talent here.”

Melbourne was where Lora first got involved with a similar ‘Girls Rock’

initiative in 2016. Derived from an evolved underground slogan, ‘Girls to the front’ was a popularised movement from the late 80s punk scene in the United States - which was most recently revived in the movie ‘Moxie’.

Leading this initial local adaptation, Lora has recruited other industry colleagues to the committee, such as Senior Academic staff member at Wintec, Megan RogersonBerry, Lauren Kerr-Bell from Hamilton Live Music Trust, Sara Marandi from Hamtown Smakdown, Ruth Power from TeamSquad / Piano Picnic, and previous fellow band member and video maker, Kat Waswo.

Nearly every organiser is a Wintec School of Media Arts alumna, and hail from local high schools themselves - Raglan Area School, Hamilton Girls High, Fairfield, Hillcrest, Fraser, Te Awamutu and Cambridge. Lora believes this dynamic group of mentors can attract some exciting new talent to join the To The Front Kirikiriroa programme from Hamilton and surrounding townships across the Waikato.

The not-for-profit Co-Founder and Programme Director of Girls Rock Aotearoa, Nicole Gaffney, from band Carb on Carb, is “super excited” for the much anticipated To The Front Kirikiriroa music programme.

“Expanding our engagement to Hamilton furthers our mission to create an equitable music community in Aotearoa, full of empowered and thriving youth and adults of all genders,” they said. “It’s open to youth ages 12 to 17, so we’re hoping to spark the next ‘gen’ of musicians in Kirikiriroa.”

The holiday programme includes daily instrument practice, where the attendees form ‘bands’ together for the week with the aim to perform a live showcase on the final day. They’ll participate in group workshops such as stage craft, recording audio, music videos, DIY merchandise, zine making and more - while being treated to lunch time performances by exciting artists from the New Zealand music industry.

Kicking off the programme launch, the local team is hosting a fundraiser show on Friday 16 February at Last Place Bar, with performing headliners Hagseed (Auckland), Half/Time (Hamilton), Guilt Grip (Auckland) and Halcyon Birds (Hamilton).

Accompanying this fundraising event is a raffle including a plethora of prizes from local and national sponsors - including Ableton, Firehorse FX, Music Planet, Synthstrom Audible, Last Place Bar, Raglan Coconut Yoghurt, local record stores and more. Raffles will be available to enter via Facebook and will be open until winners are drawn in late March.

aglan Bowling Club's popular Top cut Butchery Twilight Bowls competition kicks off next Tuesda, February 13.

The event is particularly suited to beginners and those who just want to have some relaxed fun. Teams of 3 can enter but individuals are also catered for as the club will arrange a team for you. Twilight Bowls runs for 5 consecutive Tuesday evenings with check-in and registration from 5.30pm.

The cost is $25 per person which includes a BBQ meal, loan bowls and spot prizes. The club runs weekly raffles and a licensed bar is also available. In second place and nearly pulling off a fairytale result was a local team scrambled together at the last minute to avoid a bye.

Club president Alan Price invited three Twilight bowlers to join him to make up an extra team. Phil Shea, Terry Wright and Dave Robertson fresh from winning the 2023 Twilight competition reluctantly agreed. Four wins later after defeating teams from Taupiri, Huntly, Te Kuiti and KIhikihi the competition rookies. came within a whisker of winning the tournament.

t’s official – we are hosting a new programmeme for the year ahead which will include workshops, seminars, writing events, books by local authors for sale and much more for all levels of writers, readers and anyone who shares the love of the writing world to become involved with.

Our first inaugural Whaingaroa Writers Workshop will start in February and we can’t wait to share the love of writing, illustrating and reading with our Whaingaroa community in the year ahead. With over 30 writers, bloggers, illustrators and publicists residing here in our community we are fortunate to have a talent pool within easy reach to help share their knowledge and skills with our community as part of our series of programmes in the year ahead.

Ann Neville is steering the programme on behalf of the Raglan Community Arts Council. Ann brings a wealth of experience and love of writing. Jacqueline Anderson, as the Event coordinator will be by her side, helping to keep the ship afloat.

The first Whaingaroa Writers World programme scheduled in February will be presented by authors Ann Neville, Steve Horne and Lance King. The programme will finish on Friday 1st March with a book launch from Kate Evans. Check out the full programme below for more details!

Lance is an internationally recognized author, teacher, and workshop facilitator who, in the last 28 years, has worked in over 300 schools in 39 countries with many thousands of students, teachers and parents. He is the author of seven books on the skills of thinking and learning, is married with four grown-up children, lives locally and divides his time between delivering workshops around the world and writing. Friday 23rd February at 7pm will feature Steve Horne, a teacher, Raglan writer and blogger. Steve with discuss his writing journey, the process, what helped him and what didn’t, getting published and effective marketing. His book ‘The Trouble with Twins’ is on its third reprint! He will also reflect on how writing has impacted on his life, and on the lives of children he has taught.

Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th from 10am to 1pm a two-session workshop will be held for students (11+ years) on writing and illustrating their own book. These sessions will be coordinated by Ann Neville (a Raglan publisher, biographer, editor and writer). The workshop will cover the essential techniques of fiction writing: character development, plotting, narrative viewpoint, dialogue, and description. There will also be time for individual feedback.

All workshops are entry by koha on the door.

he Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has been threatening for years to introduce Debt to Income Ratios (DTI’s) on NZ banks regarding mortgages. They’ve finally announced that they’re doing it in mid 2024 and how it’s going to look. So what actually is it and what is the potential impact on you?

When applying for a mortgage, banks and other lenders have affordability criteria that you have to satisfy before they’ll approve your loan application.

These criteria are generally pretty tough as they have to firstly protect the borrower/applicant against taking on more debt than they can handle, secondly they have to abide by the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA – the main lending law governing mortgages), and other responsible lending practices.

From mid 2024 however, banks alongside their existing affordability testing will have to apply a further ‘Debt to Income Ratio’ (DTI) test on you as well. If you don’t pass both the tests your application won’t be approved.

At present the DTI’s are still proposals and not set in stone. This is what is being proposed: 20% of residential property lending to owneroccupiers with a DTI ratio greater than 6 (i.e. the loan value can be more than 6 times the borrower’s income).

In other words, 80% of the bank’s lending must be to owner-occupiers with a DTI ratio of less than 6 (i.e. the value of the debt is less than 6 times the borrower’s income).

20% of residential property lending to investors with a DTI ratio greater than 7, i.e. 80% of investor borrowers will need DTIs of less than 7.

There are some exemptions to the proposed DTI restrictions. These include: • Old lending, i.e. DTIs will not apply to refinancing of existing loans. They will only apply to new lending. This is good because as the recession bites, many borrowers’ incomes are falling, meaning they wouldn’t be able to re-qualify under the DTI rules (even though they are able to make their loan repayments and qualified under the old servicing requirements).

Initially I think not too much. Having done various affordability tests on different bank test calculators, then applying the DTI ratios, there’s minimal or no difference in what banks will lend in most cases.

However, as interest rates decrease (as we think they could during 2024 and 2025) the banks are likely to decrease the ‘test rates’ that they use in their affordability calculations. As the test rates decrease, applicants’ borrowing power increases. And that is where the Debt to Income ratios will start to have an impact.

There’s good and bad in that. The good being that it in times of low interest rates it could prevent a housing ‘bubble’; the bad being that it would make it harder for first time buyers to get into the market.

Overall the proposal looks ok in our opinion and we await further information.
