aglan Horticultural Society celebrates 120 years of digging and delving, cutting and pruning, and weeding and composting this year.

Of course, the history of gardening in Whaingaroa goes back hundreds of years to the first Māori, but the earliest record of a horticultural competition in the Raglan district was a root and vegetable show held in June 1902.

In a time when work was all encompassing and coming together for community events took time and effort, the idea for a competition was sparked by local farmers and the Raglan Horticultural Society was born.

The gardening powers that be decided to go bigger the next year and in May 1903 the Agricultural and Horticultural Show held its first event; most likely featuring vegetables, fruit, flowers and livestock.

Held on the fields owned by the horticulture society president Mr W M Bankart, between Bankart and Stewart Streets, the show would have been a focal point for locals to come together and show off their hard work.

By 1910, at the societies AGM, the treasurer reported funds of 13 pounds, 14 shillings and 11 pence – over $3000 in today’s terms. The president at the time, Mr Rutherford, reported to members that as the weather had been so bad the annual Spring Show may have to be delayed.

Named for the Raglan MP Richard Bollard, the society’s oldest trophy, the Bollard Challenge Cup, was first presented in 1926 to a Mrs C Gilmour for overall competition.

Even during WWII the society was able to put on two shows in 1940 and 1941.

With a membership of around 100 members in 1993, the society entered the Annual New Year's Parade and won first prize.

That same year the popular Flower Show took an extended break of 25 years and restarted in 2014.

It now runs on alternate years with the very popular Garden Ramble.

Current president Geoff Pownall says the members are excited to be marking 120 years and are looking forward to commemorating the society’s beginnings in June.

“Much will depend on Covid restrictions, but we are planning to celebrate with a winter lunch in June, and in November with the Garden Ramble.”

Geoff is extending an invitation to new members and those of days past to join the society in celebrating 120 years of gardening.

The first Raglan Horticultural Society meeting this year is on Tuesday, February 15 at 1pm and then every third Tuesday of the month in the Church Hall, Stewart Street.

February 6, Waitangi Day, is a celebration of our founding document and the beginning of a bicultural relationship not repeated elsewhere in the world. Yes, there are treaties but none like this. There were events after the Treaty was signed and you can find out more from a number of writings and texts.

We have our own history here in Whaingaroa about our local Treaty claims past and present.

At the entrance to the iHub, Wainui Rd, there is on the right hand wall, a poster with information about Te Tiriti o Waitangi the Treaty of Waitangi. It says 500 rangatira/chiefs signed the Treaty. Of those, 39 rangatira/chiefs of Manukau and Waikato signed the Treaty.

We encourage you to take your friends and whānau and visit the iHub to view this large informative poster. It will be displayed on the wall over the coming weeks.

Peti’s father, a widower since she was one, still climbs the coconut trees and she says he finds it hard to sit still the times he has come to spend time in New Zealand.

“He has worked very hard all his life – gardening, fishing and diving to put food on the table. He never wanted to remarry because he said no-one could replace my mother.”

Peti and Paul were in Tonga during cyclone Gita that smashed the islands in 2018 and have experienced several tsunami warnings.

“One time there was a tsunami warning when our eldest boy was a baby and we were all prepared to climb the mango tree because that would be safer than getting in the car.

They cancelled and we were so relieved,” Paul says.

Peti says, a cash donation of $1000 from Raglan Four Square owner Satnam Bains will also go a long way towards helping effected families to start the rebuild.

The pair say it will take several years to rebuild and the island hasn’t fully recovered from the 2018 cyclone.

Paul estimates that $10,000 would build two substantial houses in Tonga, but for many living in humble homes the money would go a long way to rebuilding their lives.

Valentine broke up with their corporate job, normy life and their hometown of London, which is when things got interesting! he indomitable Gordon “Chow” Jowsey was the shining light among a bevy of Raglan Golf Club stars at the Club’s recent Anniversary Weekend tournament.

The Raglan Golf Club hosted the second annual two-day Whaingaroa BTW Open Tournament in beautiful sunny conditions on a magnificently manicured course which attracted a near capacity field.

Despite visiting golfers from near and far, Raglan players dominated the major prize list.

Raglan players among the prizes included the inspirational Ken Shea who captured the Men’s Division One Gross while Wayne Borrell won the stableford with Silas Toornstra in third while Luke Phillips was third in the nett.

Chris Harris claimed third in the nett competition.

Jowsey led the way in Division Three and was joined by stableford winner Steve Meddings with Tom Wilson taking the runner-up spot.

The quiet achiever Rae Borrell claimed the Ladies Bronze Gross title for the locals and Angela Curle did the same in the nett competition.

An outstanding effort by locals who were joined by golfers from as far south as Christchurch, from North Harbour and from around the greater Auckland area, across the Waikato, Bay Of Plenty and Thames Valley.

Visitors and locals were high in their praise of the event which was superbly organised by a hardworking band of club members led by Wayne Borrell and Glenn Rangitonga.

The tournament was given a boost from BTW Company Limited’s fantastic fouryear sponsorship package which will essentially help the tournament grow and prosper.
