n the last month, Raglan Police has received 87 reports, including: 13 x Family Harm incidents 7 x Burglary 4 x Vehicle crashes 5 x Theft including Shoplifting 8 x Assault/Disorder Lately and tragically we have noted quite an increase in jobs that involve people suffering from acute mental health and suicide issues. Many times, alcohol or substance abuse is part of the problem, but not always. Although this time of year is known as the festive season, for some, it is far from festive.

It can be a very lonely, sad time of the year. Just a reminder to keep an eye on your family, friends and neighbours.

Check up on them. Ask them if they are OK, and if they are not, encourage them to seek help from experts. The Mental Health line is 0800 505050.

There is a liquor ban in place throughout the year in the CBD. From 23 December through to 6 January every year there is a Raglan area wide liquor ban in ALL public places. Banking on sand dune restoration T

ainui hapū advocate for the environment Angeline Greensill can explain the importance of a dune so simply that even kids can understand it.

“I tell them a dune is like a bank – you put money in the bank and when you need it you can draw from it.”

That’s what she told students from Wesley Primary School recently, when on a school camp at the Institute of Awesome in Raglan they took part in a Coastcare planting bee along Kākāriki Beach, west of Wainamu.

About 60 students have helped plant 2700 kōwhangatara/spinifex and pīngao native grasses, which trap windblown sand.

Raglan’s beaches and inner harbour experience considerable coastal erosion, which is particularly noticeable when it happens in areas that have been developed for reserves, infrastructure or property.

Angeline knows all about the erosion – her home is just metres away from being taken by the sea and is on the edge of a trial dune creation into which the students were planting.

“To me coastal erosion is a natural process that we have to work with,” says Angeline, who has seen the sand come and go over the years.

“You can tell when it’s time to give nature an extra hand. A couple of prominent rocks on the beach get covered with sand; then it is time.

“After the last storm, our pōhutukawa trees ended up on the beach so we decided to install some brush fascines to catch sand. My dad did the same thing successfully in 2003 when the surf club building that was here was removed by council after being threatened by erosion.

“We’re fortunate this time because Coastcare has helped with a sand push-up to create dune slopes rather than waiting for the sand traps to work.”

Coastcare Waikato coordinator Stacey Hills says the role of a dune system and sandtrapping plants can be difficult for people to get their head around.

“Healthy dune systems naturally erode and build up in cycles over years,” says Stacey, who has led two other planting bees – back dune plantings with local students – in Raglan this year.

“They give protection to the land behind them by acting as a buffer against eroding wave action during storms or wild weather.

“The native dune grasses catch sand when the sea is nice and calm, and all that built up sand acts like buffer against the sea for when

it’s not. The problem is the developed areas that are hard up against the coastline – they don’t have great widths of kōwhangatara and pīngao to allow for accretion/erosion cycles.”

Kākāriki Beach is an example of this. From the end car park on Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive towards the harbour there are no healthy dune systems, and the developed land has steep scarps and is covered in weeds.

For the 90-metre trial site, a bobcat and a digger were used to push up sand from below the high tide line to create a small dune against scarp.

“We’re trying to extend the strong dune system that exists to the west of this site,” says Stacey.

“If successful, in that the dune builds forward, then we will look to replicate that work in other areas along this stretch of beach.

“There are no guarantees when working with nature, unfortunately, as the natural rebuilding of a dune does require time – but hopefully this site gets time to recover before the next big storm.”

Restoration of the Whāingaroa coastline is a collaboration between Waikato Regional Council, Waikato District Council and Tainui hapū. Plantings are undertaken with keen members of the community, local schools, university students and occasionally corporate groups.

"We teach the juniors the basics of the game including grip, aim, setup and swing as well as golf etiquette," explained head coach Glenn Rangitonga. We always throw in a big chunk of fun as this is very much a large part of the game!"

The term will end with a two-person Ambrose tournament next Thursday, with prizes being awarded!

No slowing ninety-plus Meals on Wheels driver

I

t’s what you might call a Gilbertian situation… a 97 year old delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly around town.

Fred - flanked by rest home staffers Gregor and Cindy - is happy to deliver the goods.

But as improbable as it sounds Fred Gilbert does exactly that, every Friday and sometimes other days if another volunteer can’t do their shift.

He delivers the half-dozen or so hot meals in his own electric car – a Nissan Leaf bought a few years ago and charged nightly in the garage using the free electricity from his energy plan.

“Im a very independent person,” Fred acknowledged to the Chronicle at the Bayview Rd home to which he and wife Yvonne retired 37 years ago with hardly a glance back over the divvy.

Retired is hardly the right word; in his typedup memoirs Fred’s got an A4 page-long list of all the things he’s done since settling in Raglan.

One of the first is having joined the local St John Ambulance service, where he not only trained as an officer but also delivered Meals on Wheels through the organisation.

It was the late 1990s and before the service switched to hospital boards around the country, he explains.

Decades on – and still delivering – this nimble nonagenarian reckons all his volunteer work has been driven simply by a desire to be part of the community.

Over the past few years, since Yvonne died, he’s not only distributed meals to others but has also received them himself “as a gift” from Raglan Rest Home and Hospital where the meals are prepared daily.

He’s certainly earned them, reckons rest home owner/manager Maree Lawrence, because Fred – an electrician in a past life – also used to do TV maintenance for free at the rest home.

The old folks would press all the wrong buttons, Fred laughs, and he’d help restore reception.

Fred also used to drive the community minibus once a week, taking rest home residents “for a jaunt round the neighbourhood”. Quite the home handyman – having built his own bach, then his current house – he also helped erect the new Raglan Community House in Bow St and did its electrical work.

Subsequently, through the community house, Fred started up SeniorNet in Raglan for older people. He’s still a dab hand at the computer and, despite clinging onto his old landline, is au fait with a mobile phone too.

Using a hearing aid occasionally seems to be his only concession to old age.

While still a relatively young man – after a decade as a sparkie – Fred retrained as a minister, and he went on to serve in various parishes for 35 years. These days he religiously travels into Hamilton Methodist Church for worship on Sundays.

And he indulges another passion, for amateur radio, from his home every day. “A finger in that pie too,” he chuckles, having started up a club for Raglan “hams” soon after retiring. The small group of enthusiasts took over a vacant space in the basement of the then-new community house he’d helped build.

Although he’s the only ham left in town these days – quipping “I’ve lived too long” – Fred still talks to others by radio daily throughout the Waikato and around New Zealand. Thursday nights are reserved for long-distance callouts, Fred adds, and that’s when he chats with fellow hams the world over.

“There’s always something to do in (or from) Raglan,” Fred insists, even if he’s reached a point where most people think they shouldn’t ask him to take on anything more.

R

aglan Theatre Academy once again takes us on a fantastical journey. Mixing the modern age with Greek mythology, we follow the quest of a young and trouble-prone Percy Jackson, (Wai Ariki Tepania) who discovers he is the son of the Sea God Poseidon (Elliot Wilson).

Aided by the enthusiastic Satyr, Grover (Ivy Brunskill) and the daughter of Athena, Annabeth (Josie Harder), Percy must complete the difficult quest to find the thief of Zeus’s lightning bolt to prevent war between the Olympians, as well as rescue his mother (Lani Frazerhurst) from the powerful Hades (Brooklyn Bayliss).

Inspired by the first novel of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, ‘The Lightning Thief’, written and directed

by Ruth Hare, is an adaptation with a Kiwi twist, taking us to the likes of Skycity and Weta Workshop.

After Percy is sent to Camp Halfblood to be around others like himself - we meet the half-bloods and the knowledgeable Satyr Chiron (Zaria O’Donnell). The half-bloods, fronted by a cunning Luke (Katie Parkes) and Clarisse (Isla Kirk-Orman), are fierce as they play out a well-choreographed combat scene.

Consistently throughout Percy’s journey, an assortment of characters tries their best to stop Percy, Grover and Annabeth from completing their quest. Mythical creatures such as the Cerberus (Sylvia Haughey, Amanda-Aroha Rolton, Niko Arathimos), Minotaur (Matai Jones), and the Furies (Danielle Marquand, Kaia Ridley, Judy McLean) come onto their path and create challenge after challenge.

Trying to trap the group, the Lotus Casino dwellers are a delight to watch in their circuslike routine and as game-addicted characters.

Led into the underworld by the charismatic Weta Workshop Guide Charon (Selva Petzold de la Cruz), we are introduced to the energetic Underworld skeletons - a definite crowd favourite, sporting neon face paint and skeleton outfits which were brilliantly highlighted by UV lights.

The youngest of the cast starred as stone garden creatures, delivering an adorable performance before scattering the stage in the presence of Medusa. Medusa (Vida Bradbury) leaves an ominous yet charming impression as she attempts to lure the trio into becoming stone garden creatures themselves.

The roles of Ares (Giorgia Hope), Hades (Brooklyn Bayliss), Poseidon (Elliot Wilson), and Zeus (Rudy Welsh) are wonderfully played by their actors and leave a powerful impact.

Despite the obstacles, Percy is aided by the likes of the Oracle of Delphi (Sylvie Haughey) and the enchanting water spirits led by Nereid (Ayla Lindfield).

Another highlight was professional news reporter Barbara Walters (Kaya Le Gouais Borgoo) who gave us the comedic interviews of Percy’s Camaro-loving stepfather Gabe (Milan Marshall) as well as the disoriented bus driver (Matai Jones) whose state of shock brought out lots of laughs.

Review: Case of the Missing Meaning

hāingaroa Youth Movement returned to the Wainui Bush Park on Saturday with their performance of Case of the Missing Meaning.

In the 20th year of the group, Patti Mitchley and her dancers investigated the never ending search for meaning and how life can sometimes lead us down paths that create disconnection and isolation. There was a sense of community and groundedness in the bush park as the crowd poured in and the pīwakawaka gave us their own show before the dancers came into the clearing.

As the opening music swelled, one dancer performed alone. One by one she had several hoodies placed on her small frame by the other dancers, emphasising the heaviness of life and the collective heartache we are living through.

Following this striking opener, the next few pieces captured the chaos and discombobulation of life. The dancers flitted around, each performing their own repetitive movements to an eclectic soundtrack including Imogen Heap, Haim and Gotye.

After a performance to “Issues” by Julia Michaels, the smallest group of dancers crept on stage in oversized trench coats, hats, sunnies, (and even moustaches) to inspect the older dancers who were frozen in space.

The search for meaning continued as they peered behind the statues, creating a sense of playfulness and mystery.

The speakers then blared out the Fatboy Slim and Bootsy Collins track “Weapon of Choice. This upbeat song was perfect for the group of bright tutu-clad dancers to showcase all the choices we have to make in our lives and the different paths they can lead us down.

As the younger dancers walked off with their hands over their eyes, ears and mouths, the older group transitioned in mirroring their movements setting up for the outstanding performance to “Lost in the World'' by Kanye West and Bon Iver. As the song started to build the repeated choreography got more striking; a hand indicating to stop, arms flexed in strength, prayer hands to the sky, hands protecting their heads. The repeated refrain in the song “I’m lost in the world, I’m down on my mind” served as a reminder of how difficult the last few years have been and captured the entire essence of this year's performance; the constant search for meaning and togetherness. Jorden Lahood-Timu assisted Patti with choreography this year and her collaboration added a beautiful urgency to the movements that reflected the message of the show.

If that dance served as the energetic climax, then the next performance by the two youngest groups felt like the emotional climax. Soundtracked by the stunning song “Little Blue” by Jacob Collier and Brandi Carlisle, the dancers came together, skipping in pairs and holding hands. You could feel the smiles grow and perhaps some tears falling amongst the crowd (myself included) as they danced to the lyrics “Don’t be afraid of the dark in your heart. You're gonna find a way to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. You’re gonna find a way home.”

The emotional journey continued with the final piece to Coldplay’s “Fix You”. The dancers desperately reached into the space, searching for something, anything to grab on to. They ended on their knees, their arms outstretched, an offering to the audience. The only way we can move through this life is by doing it together. Our collective burden

Images by Molly McCabe. was then lifted as one dancer returned wearing all the hoodies from the opener which were removed one by one by her fellow dancers. Once all the hoodies were removed the dancers stood holding hands and holding that weight together, ready to move forward.

All the dancers then swarmed back into the clearing for the finale dance to “This Must Be the Place” by Talking Heads who put it better than I ever could, “Home is where I want to be.” Finding home and community is what we are all searching for and Patti and her dancers encapsulated this in another stunning work.

Every year the Whāingaroa Youth Movement puts on a spectacular show, highlighting the creativity of our tamariki and the community we are lucky to call home. Their shows often reflect the complications of being a human in the modern world but what it ultimately comes down to is the way we come together to look after ourselves and the people we love. This year’s show was no exception.

Thank you to everyone for coming to support our dancers. Lastly, a big shout out to the Raglan Māori Wardens who did a great job handling the traffic and the parking for the event.

Freedom2fly Students Shine - November 4th and 5th, 2023 from Freedom2fly

reedom2fly, Raglan's premier Dance and Circus Arts Studio, soared to new heights with its muchanticipated Student Showcases for 2023 held on November 4th at the TE UKU HALL and 5th at FREEDOM2FLY STUDIO. Breaking from tradition, this year's showcases were divided into two magical performances - 2x Dance Showcases -"Around the World" and Circus Aerial, and Acro "The Enchanted Earth," both of which played to sold-out audiences.

The Te Uku Hall, making its debut as the venue for the showcases, provided a stage for our budding dancers. For the first time, dancers had the opportunity to showcase their skills in a more professional theatre setting, creating an unforgettable experience for both students and audience members.

The weekend was a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of Freedom2fly's students, who have been diligently honing their skills throughout the year. The showcases not only allowed them to exhibit their artistic prowess but also served as a

platform to boost confidence and foster camaraderie.

The success of these shows wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support from our parent helpers and incredible volunteers. Their dedication ensured the seamless execution of the weekend’s events!

Plastics ban sparks niche win-win venture with colourful woven bags

N

ews of an impending national ban on single-use plastic bags was all the impetus Te Mata woman Nicola Todd needed to launch her now booming business in multi-coloured Zay bags, which are flying off the shelves of stockists up and down the country.

Nicola, who was living in Myanmar at the time, read on a news website that New Zealand retailers were being given six months to stop providing lightweight, single-use plastic bags, and decided “I’m going to do it”.

She’d already fallen in love with the durable, hand-woven zay chin (market baskets) which village women made from shipping tape, using simple frames, while sitting on bamboo mats in their homes.

So she set about filling a shipping container over the next six months with 5000 bags to take back home and on-sell. The venture was such a success she now has a constant supply of bags from the weavers she found while scouting the villages on the back of a motor-scooter with someone who spoke a bit of English.

“And I can pay the women 50 percent more than they would otherwise get,” she told the Chronicle.

Nicola reckons her relationship with these artisans back in Myanmar – formerly Burma – is the best part of the business. “They’re incredibly strong, resilient women, leading big and colourful lives,” she says.

Nicola says the best part of starting this business has been getting to know the weavers and their families.

’m writing this on Sunday and tomorrow is Monday 4 December 2023 - 25 years to the day of the opening of Show Off Aotearoa NZ.

The now 47-year-old mother of two sons – Rion (11) and Flynn (9) – says she took the time when living there for three years with husband Kent to build friendship and trust among the skilled weavers of several villages.

She now sees her Zay bag business as a means of making their lot, in what is the poorest country of Southeast Asia, just a tiny bit better.

But Nicola insists she couldn’t have done it without the support of Raglan people and businesses that were instrumental in helping her – she hadn’t a shred of experience in retail – once the family returned to New Zealand and settled in Te Mata on a 100-acre block which had been part of the old Gibbison farm.

Local vintage shop Florals and Finds, she says, stocked Zay bags from the outset nearly five years ago, while both a local courier and the BP gas station go out of their way to deliver or hold packages when time is of the essence.

Raglan Tiny Homes, with which her fledgling business shares a large farm shed, are quick to build more shelving for storage whenever a new shipping container is panic-ordered online, laughs the budding entrepreneur. Another local business, Friends of Design, has come up with the Zay logos.

There are also the women who’ve become friends through helping with everything from administration and dispatch to marketing, styling and photographing – even modelling – for Zay’s social media shoots.

Women like local beekeeper-cum-marketing whiz Pauline Dogniez who finally pulls things together to create Zay’s social media content.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing. Just over a year into developing the business, says Nicola, disaster struck when Covid hit the country. Stock only started moving again once another local, Sophie Dowse, hooked Zay up to Shopify – a popular e-commerce website builder that small businesses use to sell products through their online stores or social media platforms.

Nicola says now however her “thing” is selling wholesale – from Northland to Southland – to stores like Raglan’s Florals and Finds. There’s also a store in Samoa, she adds. “It’s random!”

Taking Zay bags to the New Zealand Gift & Homeware Fair in Auckland – the country’s biggest trade show for retailers – is how Nicola herself sells.

“I sold to over 50 boutiques and established my wholesale business this way (back in 2019),” she explains.

While the baskets are traditionally used in the markets of Myanmar for flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables, Nicola likes how they’ve morphed here into handy hold-alls for everything from pot-plants, tools and fishing tackle, to sports gear and wardrobe stackers.

These multifunctional bags are all about colour and fun, she says. “I love seeing them toted around town.”

Imagine….the old second hand shop, the famous bakery before that, and then Show Off. History in the making…!

Making Christmas count for nature We don’t cancel

hat, and getting kids outdoors and one with nature, have been the driving ethos of the Karioi environmental education programme for ten years now!

ant to see seabirds and kākā back on Karioi or give local kids a chance to join our educational programmes? In the spirit of the festive season, the Karioi team is appealing to locals to choose the Karioi Project as a worthwhile cause to support.

“Thanks to donors like them supporting our predator control and seabird monitoring programmes, we’re now seeing large numbers of tūī and kererū, not to mention kororā waddling down the beach, and vulnerable seabirds -like the ōi -successfully breeding in burrows along the coast.”

“Think of it as a Christmas present to the birds,” says Kristel van Houte, the Karioi Project manager.

“We couldn’t run without the support of our funders, some who live locally and witness first-hand how much of a difference it makes for our native birds and trees.”

Aiming to restore biodiversity from the mountain to the sea, the Karioi team loves to inspire the Raglan community to take a stand for nature.

“Funding goes to protecting the places we all love,” Kristel says.

“We’ve had such lovely feedback from our donors – one supporter told me how, back in the 1980s, it was such an exciting occasion to spy just one tūī in a summer, and that they had never seen a kererū at all.”

While there are many wins to celebrate, the work is not yet complete because Karioi and the surrounding area are not predator-free.

Creating connections to whenua, moana and wai, with an emphasis on environmental care, the Karioi Project leads local tamariki to explore a whole range of ecosystems. They create opportunities to engage in a wide variety of activities - from exploring Whāingaroa streams or rocky shores and the wonderful creatures that inhabit them, to floating up the harbour, developing navigational skills and of course, learning about invasive predators and going trapping.

And if it does rain? “Activities go ahead anyway – because playing in the rain is extra fun!

We just make sure we’re prepared for any possible adventure!” says Amber – Karioi Education coordinator. “There are also backup activities planned when needed, so parents know they never have to wonder if we’re going ahead, or not. We are.”

Aside from their after-school and in-school programmes, they also run an environmental holiday programme for local families and visitors. With a variety of days and activities available again throughout the summer holidays. Parents can sign their kids up online now to secure a place for their kids. Te Uku Primary School playground update

T

e Uku Primary School has had an exciting 2023! The school has seen roll growth, continued our learning journey and built an awesome new playground! After more than 25 years of service from the last playground, the school had to make the decision to replace it for the safety and physical demands of our active students.

Students were surveyed to identify what they enjoyed about the old playground and what improvements could be incorporated into the new one. Once the design was decided it was amazing to have the community back the school and help with removing the old playground and raise money for the new one.

Parents, Friends of Te Uku and Board Members all helped out to raise money

through corporate sponsorship from local businesses and more further afield. The local community and family members further away supported the school by purchasing bricks to line a footpath leading to the playground which will be laid in the new year. The proceeds from the bricks went directly to the playground fund.

Parents and friends of Te Uku School worked through sun, rain, mud and sometimes into the night to remove the old playground.

Time was donated generously, as was the use of tractors, trailers, power tools and a special thanks to West Coast Hire for the free use of a digger.

The old playground did not go to waste. All of it was purchased by wide eyed mums and dads and re-homed to homes around the area for more fun in front and back yards! Again, all proceeds going to the playground fund.

The school was very privileged to have Kaumatua Russell Riki bless our new playground with a meaningful ceremony with staff, children and community members in attendance. The school also showed their appreciation with an opening ceremony to thank all of its sponsors that helped make the playground replacement possible. A more permanent "thank you" was also unveiled during the ceremony to acknowledge those sponsors that gave very generously.

Waitawheta Camp - Te Uku Middle Discovery T

he term began and all of us were excited. This was it. Our turn to go to camp! We heard all the stories from the seniors how much fun their camp was. We had our gear list, we had our rotations and a hint of activities we were going to dive into along with a little bit of history about the area. We were off!

Our first stop was Karangahake Gorge - with its welcoming shade of big trees and cool water.

We set off to explore the train tunnel with its glow worms and disused track. It was dark, cool and a little scary. The track at the other end was closed so we got to go back through again - lucky us. It was the start of the coolest camp ever!

Back in the car our next destination was our home for the next three days ‘Camp Waitawheta’. Out the back of Karangahake and behind Waihi sits an historic little camp.

Boasting it is ‘ the place to come learning about the outdoors (and yourselves) in an environment made for adventure!’. They were not wrong.

We packed in the most adventures possible.

Our adventures started with the large and small rock climbing walls, the low ropes confidence course and the flying fox. We also learnt a

new game on their large grassed playing field.

The next day we went eeling - we got to feed three very large old tuna that rippled their body through the current and rocks to eat a mixture of different food. Their favorite was the cat food in gravy. We also got to tramp through the most amazing native bush and follow a trail that used to be part of the gold mining days.

We had experienced kayaking parents waiting for us at Dickies Flat, it was super cold but incredibly fun. We got to go up the rapids! At the Victoria Battery Tramway we got immersed in history. We got to go on the tram which was a 1.2 kilometer gauge tramway which goes through the remains and relics at the Victoria Battery site. We then went underground to see the chutes and kilns. We then learnt about the history of the townships around the area including the three disastrous floods at Waikino.

The following day we went swimming in the nearby Waitawheta river. Our camp was awesome, we filled it with a good understanding about the local history, exploring the bush and streams and challenging us with activities that made us work together. Camp Waitawheta is the very best camp.

The End of an Era for Year 6 Students

ur Year 6 students reflect on their time in Kura Teina, think about their upcoming move to Kura Tuakana, and dish out some advice to the Year 5s who are about to take their place.

What is your favorite memory of Kura Teina?

Lucia: The hockey tournament.

Pania: Swimming sports. It was really fun.

Inés: I liked camp because I got to stay with my friends for two nights.

Dizzy: Jumping out of the feijoa trees and getting really bad ground shock.

Aria: I liked camp because there were lots of fun activities. I liked Animal survival because it was in the mud and you had to run away from people.

Arlo S: Winning cross country because I bet all the Year 7s.

Alvina: Making my first friend because I was just starting school and I didnt have any.

Zoe: Probably Art with Whaea Kerry because I really like arts and crafts.

Jed: Playing ripper on the field because it feels like it was made for me.

Kace: Art, because I like the subject.

Are you excited about being a Year 7? Why or why not?

Pania: Yes, but I'm a bit nervous. We get modules!

Alivna: I’m excited because I get to see my friends who are Year 7.

Devon W: Yeah. I think it would be good for me.

Arlo: Yes because I’m moving to the UK for 3 years to a school in a different country.

Aria C: Yes because most of my friends are Year 7 now.

But also no, because I am leaving my friends in Year 5.

Hawaikii: Yes I'm excited but I'm also terrified.

Lucia: Yes, because you get to do modulus and you get to swap classes.

Steven: Yes, because my friends are all there, and it’s a bigger space.

Inés: No, because the first year of the syndicate is always scary.

Maycn: No, because I don't want to switch classes.

What advice would you give to the Year 5s who are becoming Year 6s next year?

Hawaikii: Be prepared for doing lots of hard work.

Aria C: Work hard or you’ll not achieve anything.

Lucia: Sign up for lots of tournaments or you'll miss out.

Inés: Try your hardest and if you don’t understand just ask. BE KIND.

A Day at the Bowling Club

O

n the nineteenth and twentieth of November, Year 5-8 students went to the Raglan Bowling Club.

Fortunately, it was a beautiful sunny day.

As the sun smiled down at us, we lined up and were split into groups of four. After that, we were stationed at numbered jacks.

Members of the bowls club were appointed to groups. They showed us how to roll the balls correctly and cheered us on even if we made mistakes. There were squeals of delight all over the field as bowling balls sailed over the fresh green grass.

the newest edition to the Western Cluster competitions. But in reality, we all just had a blast!

Ballroom Dancing Year 8 Te Mata Leavers at Te Mata

T

his year Te Mata School put on a ballroom dancing display with both of our senior classes. All Year 6, 7 & 8 students participated in this spectacular school event.

The whole school and the community were invited to come and watch them perform, where they put all of their hard work and training for this day into action.

All of the seniors got into their dancing outfits, girls in dresses and also suits if they preferred. The boys wore collared shirts, suits, and ties. They performed the Bus Stop, Cha Cha, Change of Partner Dance, Cotton Eye Joe, and Samba. No time for old fashioned music here.

Students rocked out to songs by AC\DC, Rhianna, Billy Idol, The Cult, and Sia. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to do so many activities and displays. It was an awesome experience for everyone, with a disco being held by the student council afterwards.

Diwali at Waitetuna School

Waitetuna School And The Art Of Film

A

t Waitetuna School we recently celebrated Diwali, also known as the Hindu Festival of Light. Everyone at Waitetuna School had the option to bring some kai to share around. Our principal brought some traditional Diwali sweet foods too. We enjoyed eating the treats and celebrating Diwali. The juniors made colorful paper lanterns to decorate their classroom.

Diwali Today and Diwali Then Diwali is an Indian festival that celebrates light over darkness. In India Diwali is usually celebrated by wearing fine clothes, illuminating the interior and exterior of their homes with saaki (earthen lamps), performing worship ceremonies for Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, lighting fireworks and having family feasts. We could all get dressed up too.

Diwali in northern India commemorates Prince Rama's triumphant return to the city of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile because of the plotting of his evil stepmother, after a heroic rescue of his wife Sita, an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi, who had been kidnapped by the rival king Ravana. But in southern India, Diwali celebrates the victory of King Krishna's destruction of the demon Naraka who is said to have imprisoned women and tormented his people.

The real message in Diwali symbolizes the story of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. This year's Diwali festival at Waitetuna School was an experience to be enjoyed!

I

n class we’re studying films and the making of films. We went to Weta Workshop to learn more about film making and what goes on behind the scenes.

Film Making And The Film Festival The Senior class have written scripts and designed storyboards ready for filming and editing next year. We are all entering films into the Raglan 2024 festival -it’s going to be fun. We are creating a variety of different movie themes, like horror, action and comedy. We are learning how to use special effects too. With these skills and others, we will be able to produce our own films. Some people will work on their movies over the holiday.

The Weta Workshop Trip To learn more about film, we went on a school trip to Weta Workshop in Auckland. The tour was

split into three sections based on genres -horror, fantasy, and sci-fi. In the horror section we saw what the scary characters were made of and got to use controllers to move the face that made it look alive.

In the fantasy there was a castle and a kingdom made at a tiny scale. It took up a lot of space and there was even a tunnel that you crawl through underneath the castle to mimic a river. In the sci-fi there was a giant gold robot person that moved. It was a fabulous school trip and very inspiring.

By studying film, learning the techniques, and going to Weta Workshop we gained more knowledge on film making. If you are reading this you could even give it a try, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have many resources. We all start somewhere. So get your camera or phone and create! Happy Summer Filming.

A Christmas message from the Raglan Chamber

ot focusing on business this month folks - looking to Christmas and a connected and safe community over this time. We want the best holiday experience for our families and loved ones but the holidays can actually be a tough time for people for various reasons, and can lead to isolation, loneliness and financial worries.

We have been thinking of some ideas to help keep us connected to others and relieve a bit of the financial pressure over Christmas.

Give experiences, not gifts.

We are blessed in Whaingaroa to have so many things we can do for free or low cost.

We have a load of walking experiences and beach fun for free; arrange to meet family and friends for a walk with a BYO food picnic.

Take family and visitors to see the Museum and the Creative Markets, and Christmas art shows at the Old School Art Centre and Town Hall.

Many of our local stores are arts studios with original artworks you can view. The Raglan I-hub based at the Museum can help you make an itinerary of free activities in town.

Can you give vouchers for banking time to do things in the future?

Can you agree to do something together in the future like hire a kayak or meet for a coffee and a walk at a place you've never been to?

Remember that presence comes before presents Many people feel under pressure at Christmas. We may find ourselves worrying about buying the best (or most expensive) presents in order to impress others or to bring a smile to their face. Really, your family and friends just want to see you and yours, and spend time with you.

If you are struggling financially, having an open and honest conversation with your family could put some of your worries to bed.

For example, you could set smaller budgets for how much you can spend or skip gift-giving entirely. Can you organise a family Secret Santa rather than everyone having to buy everyone a gift? Our local stores have loads of smaller, original pieces often made locally that are sure to please.

Give to others in need.

If you can afford to give there are several local organisations and groups supporting giving at Christmas - pick one close to your heart.

Our local Surfside Foodbank; Toy Drive for kids; Toiletries and essentials for women; Timebank. Ask at the Community House what their Christmas focus is this year, and if you can support this.

If you can't give gifts or donate can you give time? Visit with an isolated neighbour? Have the kids make up a card and take it to someone in your community for a visit? Make someone a small plate of leftover goodies from a lunch and sit with them for a chat?

Seek help and support.

ll the economists were unanimous in expecting the Reserve Bank to leave the Official Cash Rate unchanged this time round and they didn't disappoint. The OCR was held at 5.50% for the fourth time.

When will we finally see some interest rate relief?

Background to the current environment: This time three years ago we’d just come out of lockdown for the first time and red flags were beginning to emerge.

Not medicinal red flags, financial ones.

Here’s what happened…

When the pandemic first reared its invisible head in early 2020, governments started pumping rivers of stimuli into their economies and put every safety net in place, rendering it almost impossible for employers and employees to lose their shirts.

Consequently, while consumers worked from home, some were hoarding piles of cash with little opportunity to spend.

By late 2020, the bond market (the best forecaster of interest rates) started heading north suggesting inflation was about to scream and rates would go up much sooner than 2024 which the Reserve Bank had indicated.

Incredibly, despite all the warnings, central banks around the world remained adamant rates wouldn’t go up until 2024.

And now, three years later, some within the commentariat are suggesting rates should start coming down because inflation has peaked.

It’s as if rates should be cut as a reward for lower inflation.

But will it happen? And if so when?

Firstly, I’m not convinced inflation is under control yet, especially with the recent spate of wage increases we have seen.

Secondly, even if inflation was under control, I still wouldn’t expect rates to come down by any great shakes anytime within the next 12 months.

If rates go too high, and unemployment starts to rise, then rates will have to be cut to stimulate the economy to create more jobs.

Put simply, you hike rates to fix inflation and you cut rates to fix employment. Currently we don't have high unemployment.

Our typical recommendation at the moment is to stick to the 12-18 month rate terms, rather than be drawn into the banks sub 7% 2-5 year rates; as we are at the peak of the cycle we just aren't ready to come down the other side yet.

Of course everyone’s circumstances are different so seek professional advice before locking any rates in.

A chat with the new owners of Ray White Raglan

W

aikato born and bred Gregg and Marsha Tickelpenny are the new owners of Ray White, Raglan. The Chronicle caught up with Gregg to learn about their experience and special connection to Raglan.

Our working careers started in Te Awamutu back in the 1990s. I qualified as an accountant and Marsha worked at Freedom Air. After nine

years accounting I found my main interest was in the real estate profession.

We purchased the Ray White Te Awamutu office in 1999 and slowly expanded to include offices in Otorohanga, Te Kuiti, Taumarunui and Tokoroa - all good regional towns which were an attraction for us.

A few months back the opportunity came along to purchase Ray White Raglan - a very experienced, fun team, charming office and located in a prime position in Bow Street, supporting a diversified and vibrant community.

The timing was now right with our family being a bit older, to make the acquisition.

Local agents Dave and Julie Hanna have been long time friends through the Ray White connection. Many good discussions were had with Dave over the years at conferences and courses, and now with Blair on the best fishing spots!

Tell us about your connection to Raglan.

The grandparents bought a bach back in 1970 which is still in the family today. Raglan has been our annual holiday spot ever since. Memories include the wooden

boats moored in the estuary all year round. The local fisherman would bring in the daily catch at the jetty.

Past businesses including Petchells Supermarket, Duck Inn Dairy, Seagulls, Marlin Cafe and Vinnies.

We grew up fishing in the harbour and eventually moved to ocean fishing. Now we are into paddle boarding, trekking on Mt Karioi and boogie boarding at Ngarunui Beach. (Raglan Silver Surfers Club 2020) Marsha has been a regular to Raglan since we coupled up. Before that she grew up travelling to Kawhia for summer holidays with her grandparents…a lifetime covered in black sand. Her family has been in the Kawhia and Raglan area since 1895, with plenty of that time spent in the Raglan Pub no doubt!

What aspirations do you have for RW in Raglan?

Now in our 25th year of real estate we hope to continue growing the business by bringing our experience and maximising the latest Ray White technology.

he newest defibrillator is now installed in town thanks to friends Chris, Shannon, Sue and Donna. It looks fantastic in its Manukau Rd location at the Raglan Rest Home, ready to be of service to locals, businesses, and visitors in Raglan as well as to those working at the Raglan Rest Home.

A massive thanks to those of you that came to the defibrillator training session at the Fire Station a couple of months ago, with over 50 people in our community turning up on a Monday lunchtime to receive tips and training as to how defibs work, where to find them, and the reality of using one in an emergency.

The truth is, community confidence will save a life, and in such a tight-knit community the chances are it will be someone we know!

We want to say another thanks to Dr Mike, Frank at the Fire Station, Jacqui at the Chronicle, Aaron at the Radio and all the cafes and shops that shared the training amongst their networks. This really is a numbers game; the more of us that are confident using this equipment, the more prepared we are to face an emergency, and save a life.

Sue Hall and Donna Southwick of Lodge Real Estate so kindly funded the cost of the most recent two defibrillators in Raglan (Prime Response Car and Raglan Rest Home) and with more defibrillators dotted around

the town the better we are to respond and save a life. The Prime response car now has a defibrillator on-board thanks to these efforts, and of course that is our out-of-hours service so it puts all of us in a much better situation!

So, a huge thanks to Sue and Donna for their generosity and for being so practical with their response to the recent passing of Kyle Leuthart.

We look forward to hosting another training session next year, and for those business and community groups who have made contact and are looking to extend their emergency preparedness, we are looking forward to having more of these conversations with you in 2024.

I spoke with Chris Leuthart last week, he said, “The girls (Sue and Donna) have got this here and we are very proud to have it here. If it saves a life then it’s so worthwhile. This, and of course the one they put in the Prime Response car. It’s great to have one at this Trust Hospital (Raglan Rest Home) in case they ever need one; there are so many people working here and coming here - both staff and guests. The girls have been phenomenal, and without their support this would never have happened. Coming from the same industry as Kyle they know what it’s like, and they wanted to honour him.”

Farewell for now Dr Hamish Seton W

e will be sad to farewell Hamish on 20th December after 7 years of service at the clinic though we’re excited for his future and the opportunities that lie ahead for him.

Hamish and his wife Madeleine, who is also a GP, are setting off on an adventure to Ecuador next year with their four young children where they plan to live for a while.

Hamish’s time with us has been marked by a commitment to excellence, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of our patients and community. His warmth, empathy, clinical skills, and experience have been invaluable, and his absence will undoubtedly be felt by both colleagues and patients alike.

We extend our heartfelt thanks for his years of service and will always have a

place here if he wishes to come back and join the team again in the future.

The road up to the Wainui Reserve will be closed from 8pm-6am Friday 19th Jan and Saturday 20th Jan 2024, unless you have the appropriate festival car pass. There is no general parking for festival attendees onsite it is reserved for those with camping and appropriate car passes.

For those who live locally or have alternative accommodation cars can be parked at the Raglan Airfield and free shuttles are provided to and from the festival site. Please be aware there may be heavy traffic during peak times predicted between 8am - 1pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
