Raglan surfers selected for New Zealand junior team from Surfing New Zealand

Raglan surfers Van Camenzind, left, and Alani Morse have been selected to compete at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in El Salvador.

R

aglan surfers Alani Morse and Van Camenzind will represent New Zealand at the 2026 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in El Salvador next month.

They will be joined by Raglan coaches Daniel Kereopa and two-time Olympian Billy Stairmand when the New Zealand Junior Surfing Team competes against surfers from more than 50 countries from 4 to 13 September.

alongside Dunedin’s Alexis Owen and Piha surfer Sev Tolhurst.

“It’s pretty sick to be in the NZ team for the first time and I’m really stoked to get the opportunity to represent New Zealand in El Salvador,” Van says. “My goals for the event are to surf my best, and get a good result for myself and the team.” The in-form Raglan surfer is one of seven newcomers in this year’s 12-member team.

Alani, 16, will compete in the Under 16 Girls division and brings significant international experience to her fourth New Zealand junior campaign.

The surfers recently gathered in Raglan for a training camp ahead of the championships, supported by the Olympic Solidarity Fund and the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

She recently recorded a career-best seventh-place finish at the WSL South Korea QS 6000 event, competing in the Open Women’s division against leading surfers from Australasia and Asia. Earlier this year, she also received a wildcard into the WSL New Zealand Pro at Manu Bay.

Kereopa and Stairmand form part of an experienced coaching group led by team manager James Fowell. All three have previously represented New Zealand in international competition, with Stairmand having competed at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.

Alani will be looking to turn that experience into her best result yet at the world juniors. She is joined in the Under 16 Girls division by Pauanui’s Lola Groube and 13-year-old Zara Owen of Dunedin.

El Salvador has hosted the World Junior Surfing Championship several times and will provide familiar conditions for some of the returning team members. New Zealand placed 10th overall when the 2025 championship was held in Peru.

Van will make his New Zealand team debut in the Under 18 Boys division

The Central American nation will also host the first major Olympic qualification

opportunity for leading international surfers in May 2027, on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The 2026 championship features Under 18 and Under 16 divisions for boys and girls. New Zealand’s team includes a mixture of experienced international competitors and first-time representatives. The event will be Alani’s fourth appearance for New Zealand, while Alexis Owen and Lola Groube have also represented the country at each of the past three championships. Groube achieved New Zealand’s leading individual result in 2025, finishing seventh in the Under 18 Girls division despite surfing above her age group. She returns to the Under 16 division this year. “It’s pretty cool to be in the New Zealand Team for the fourth year and I’m really stoked to be able to represent New Zealand again,” Groube says.

Y

oung musicians from Whāingaroa made their mark at Rockshop Bandquest 2026, with three Te Mata School bands taking part and Not Shore winning the Waikato competition for the second year running. Not Shore performed at Clarence St Theatre in Hamilton on Thursday, 13 August, successfully defending the title it won in 2025. The band received $300 of musical equipment for Te Mata School and earned a place in the Bandquest National Finals. It was also a successful event for fellow Te Mata band Spirit Pigs, which received the Rockstar Styles Award. Spirit Pigs member Pippa Walker was recognised individually with the Outstanding Keyboardist Award. Other young musicians from the Whāingaroa area featured among the individual award winners. Anna Semenova from Te Uku School band Double Trouble received a Star Vocalist Award on the second day, while June Atkin from Raglan Area School band 6 Degrees received the same award during the first day of competition. Not Shore and Spirit Pigs were among 12 bands to perform on the second day of the Waikato event. Seven original songs were performed during the day, showcasing the songwriting and creativity of the young musicians involved. Te Awamutu Intermediate band Lowered Expectations placed second, followed by Electric Envy from Fairfield Intermediate School in third. Held across Wednesday, 12 and Thursday, 13 August, the Waikato Bandquest brought together 22 primary and intermediate school acts from throughout the region.

The young performers took to the Clarence St Theatre stage in front of whānau, friends and music supporters after months of rehearsal and collaboration. Each act also received mentoring and support from judges Emerson and Jayden Keoghan. Launched in 2011, Rockshop Bandquest is Rockquest Promotions’ primary and intermediate school pathway into Smokefreerockquest and Smokefree Tangata Beats. The programme gives young musicians an opportunity to perform covers or original songs on a professional stage. Through the experience, participants can build confidence while developing teamwork, communication, leadership and goal-setting skills. More than 350 acts involving over 2,500 young people from 184 schools across Aotearoa have taken part in Bandquest this year. Rockshop general manager of artist relations, sponsorship and events Hamish Jackson said the programme was one of the organisation’s annual highlights. “Rockshop Bandquest is one of the highlights of the year for us! It's so awesome seeing young people experience the joy of live performance, often for the very first time, and build lifelong creative skills. Creating these opportunities for the next generation of musicians across Aotearoa is hugely important to us at the Rockshop.” The first day of the Waikato competition was won by The Blue Socks from Southwell School, with fellow Southwell band Spicy Strings placing second and Built on Rock from St Peter’s School in Cambridge placing third.

R

aglan father and son Rory and Kieran O’Brien have returned from the World Field Archery Championships in the United States with strong results, including a gold and silver medal. The Lakeview Archers members represented New Zealand as part of the Black Arrows team at the championships, held at the NFAA Easton Yankton Centre in Yankton from 24 July to 1 August. Kieran won the B Grade Junior Male Freestyle Unlimited division, while Rory placed seventh in the Adult Male Bowhunter Unlimited division. Rory also helped New Zealand secure silver in the Bowhunter Unlimited Style

Team competition alongside Simon Young and Terry Bassett. “I’m really proud of what my son Kieran and I achieved,” Rory says. “Shooting good scores in competition and representing New Zealand on the world stage. To come away with a silver medal for the Bowhunter Styles Team was amazing and something I will always cherish.” The championships attracted competitors from 15 countries, with New Zealand fielding the second-largest contingent of 22 archers. Across the event, competitors completed five rounds comprising two Field Rounds, two Hunter Rounds and one Animal Round. Each Field and Hunter Round featured 28 targets, with competitors shooting four arrows at each target for a total of 112 arrows and a maximum possible score of 560 points.

In the Animal Round, archers faced 28 coloured animal targets and could shoot up to three arrows at each, stopping once they recorded a scoring arrow. Conditions and terrain in Yankton presented a different challenge from those normally encountered by New Zealand field archers. While local courses are often set among gullies, bush and forestry, the American course was largely flat, with wooden towers used to create angled shots. The extreme summer heat was another major test for competitors arriving from a Waikato winter. Simon Young said temperatures reached 42 degrees Celsius on the opening day of competition. “The biggest challenge we found was dealing with the heat. America is currently going through a heat wave and on our first day of competition temperatures rose to 42 degrees Celsius. Coming from midwinter

Many of the archers also recorded personal-best performances. Winter bowls season wraps up from Raglan Bowling Club

R

aglan Outdoor Bowls’ highly successful winter season concluded with their final winter tournament on August 10. The last three tournaments in June, July and August all enjoyed beautiful Raglan sunshine. The June tournament sponsored by Jessica Gordon of Raglan Smiles was won by a visiting Taranaki team from Oakura. Skipped by Raglan expat Tim Ryan with Andy Scherer lead and Kerry McGovern two, they won on countback from Heather Dalbeth's Raglan combination. Dalbeth was not to be outdone in July, being clear winners of the Karma Tiny Homes event with four dominant wins. She was expertly partnered by Murray Eddy lead and Jack Peel at two. The August tournament sponsored by Stephen and Michelle O'Byrne from Bayleys Raglan attracted another full field including two more Taranaki teams from Okato, 30 km south of New Plymouth. Played in perfect weather another local team triumphed, skipped by Eileen Stephens with Bev McDavitt Whyte at two, and John Robertson lead; they were the day’s only four winners. Robertson confirmed his amazing sporting talent by last weekend also becoming Raglan Golf Club junior match play champion. Our local players all excelled in the recent Waikato champion of champion events with the highlight being Ashleigh Jeffcote winning the ladies singles and going on to be third in the national champion of champions. On the Waikato club tournament circuit local Raglan team of Alan Price, John Lenihan and Trevor Kingi were winners of the Te Kauwhata July open triples. The Bowling Club is currently carrying out a major upgrade of their green's facilities with new Astro and artificial grass being installed on all the surrounds and backboards. This will provide enhanced playing conditions and be ready for summer opening day on Saturday September 5th. Other important dates on the calendar are our Spring Twilight bowls at 1pm on Sunday 20/9; this follows a successful winter twilight bowls in June. These events keep our enthusiastic twilight bowlers engaged with the club. The club will be hosting a Bowls Intro Day on Saturday October 3 for anyone wanting to give bowls a go. Cheer ears!

I

A

s the weather warms up your pets will be welcoming unwanted ecto-parasites; fleas, ticks, mites.. Ear mites! That brown sticky discharge in your pets ears may be harbouring some little annoying critters called Otodectes Cynotis. A common ear mite found both in cats and dogs and a primary cause of otitis (inflammation in the ear). Otodectes Cynotis can also be found on the skin surface and only just visible to the naked eye as a tiny white speck moving around against a dark background. The picture provided is what the mite looks like under the microscope. Otodectes Cynotis live their entire life on the animal and once a fully mature adult, live up to 2 months continuously reproducing. The life cycle of Otodectes has 5 stages; the female adult mite lays eggs in the pets ear wax, the eggs turn into larvae and feed for 3-10days, the larvae then go through 2 juvenile stages; protonymph and then deutonymph; deutonymphs are gender neutral. The adult male then mates with the deutonymph where it then becomes a pregnant female or a male mite. The life cycle takes 3 weeks to complete, that is why veterinarians will prescribe a treatment that lasts as long as the life cycle. Ear mites are highly contagious; if your pet has ear mites it would’ve picked them up from encountering another infected animal. Young animals or immune-compromised animals are more susceptible to ear mites; however, pets of any age can pick up mites. Luckily, Otodectes Cynotis is not contagious to humans. Symptoms of infestation include: • Ear scratching • Head shaking • Dark waxy discharge • Hair loss resulting from self-trauma or excessive grooming • Red inflammation in and/or around the ear Pets presenting these symptoms are typically diagnosed with ear mites however, it’s best to carry out diagnostic procedures to correctly identify if it is Otodectes Cynotis causing your pets ear issues. The best treatment for ear mites is prevention. Preventative ear mite treatment such as Bravecto (lasts up to 3 months) and can be purchased over the counter. These products will also treat fleas and ticks. If your pet hasn’t had a flea/ tick/ mite treatment in the last 1-3 months come into the clinic to purchase your pets ear mite preventative treatment.

More Than Waste: Investing in Our People. By Emma Simpson @ Xtreme Zero Waste When people think about Xtreme Zero Waste, they usually picture recycling, landfill, Kaahu’s Nest or the big ol’ smiles of the boys on the kerbside collection run. And while all of those things are true, there’s also a wonderful, moving current underneath it all. We’re a workplace that prioritises youth development, upskilling our workforce and ensuring our team is continually learning. Our team spans just about every generation. We’ve got rangatahi stepping into their very first jobs, parents juggling family life, and many who’ve had careers in completely different industries before finding their place here. Our staff training and development ranges from licences, forklift, wheels, tracks and rollers endorsements, first aid, Te Tiriti training, health and safety, cash handling, traffic management, working at heights and much more. Many of our staff begin their journey with us with no licences at all, and often leave with a full smorgsaboard (of ones we can offer!) A critical area of development that we provide is being a first job for many of our young staff, many of whom come straight from school. We take pride in being an integral part of these journeys and do what we can to be a springboard — teaching these rangatahi what it means to be employed and supporting them through the first stages of their working life. On the community and kaupapa level, we’ve held Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshops and training for our staff. In July, we had the Electoral Commission out on site making sure everyone on our team was enrolled to vote. It’s a small thing on paper, but it matters — helping our people show up fully, not just at work but as citizens in their communities. We’re passionate about zero waste, but equally as passionate about our people. Creating a thriving circular economy isn’t only about recovering resources; it’s about growing skills, confidence, leadership and opportunities that carry on well past any one job. When we invest in our people, that investment ripples out into whānau, workplaces and our wider community. And to us, that’s every bit as important as what ends up in the right recycling bin.

The Many Faces of XZW

Earlier this year, our Site Manager - and certified funniest woman alive - Niki Maniapoto celebrated her 20-year work anniversary at XZW. So, it feels like a perfect opportunity to highlight the incredible mahi Niki has done, and continues to do, here, helping steer Xtreme through almost every season of our organisation’s colourful life thus far. She has been an utter beacon of stability for our whole team, embodies our kaupapa in the most humble way possible (too humble, in my opinion) and is currently in the midst of bringing to life a mammoth upgrade to our Recycling Wall on site, which she planned and designed in full. Wait until you see how creative it is. Outside of work, Niki is actively perfecting her golf game, is a keen fan of the Warriors and is most likely delivering one of the best one-liners you’ve heard, since she has sarcasm down to a fine art form.

Hua Whenua Whāingaroa is a new community-led online produce market connecting our community with local growers and makers, while sharing the kaupapa of and complementing the Raglan Growers Market. Created by locals, it connects our community with small-scale local producers and makes it easier to choose fresh, locally grown food and locally made products from people who care about where things come from, how they’re made and how they’re packaged. It has been developed to increase access to fresh, nutrient-dense local food, nurture food resilience and community connection, support local growers and makers, care for our whenua and local ecosystems, and reduce waste through mindful, climate-conscious choices. Hua Whenua Whāingaroa is an independent initiative led by Liz, Sarah, Pippa and Tania, proudly supported by the Whāingaroa Environment Centre and Xtreme Zero Waste. om Billington and Steve Searle faced off for another chance at glory in the Plate competition at the Raglan Golf Club Championships. Competing in the men’s nine-hole match play competition, Tom and Steve battled through a closely contested round, with Steve eventually coming out on top.

“Yeh we get to play more golf which is what we love doing. It’s been good having new 9 hole members compete in the 9 hole men’s competition. The club’s goal is to increase the number of participants for 9 hole members next year!” Steve said. Well done to both players. In the bunker … Pete Aim

ith below-zero temperatures and ice on the ground, gripping golf clubs was probably the last thing on the minds of Raglan’s Futures golfers on a chilly Matamata winter morning. However, competing in the Waikato Futures competition requires perseverance, determination and skill – qualities the Raglan team has in abundance. The competition involved 18-hole rounds at Matamata, Hamilton and Cambridge, with points awarded across all three rounds.

Team members Stella, Harry, Henry, Te Atatu, Harlow and Lenny finished ninth out of 13 teams, a commendable result. The talented young players are now competing in the Raglan Golf Club Championships, where some exciting results have already been recorded. Parents provided valuable support throughout the season, an essential part of enabling the young golfers to compete. Raglan Golf Club is proud of its Futures golfers and everything they have achieved in a short period. Keep hitting those greens. Off the tee … Pete Aim

History: The taking of tea in Raglan from Raglan Museum - Robyn Riddle

W

hilst enjoying (yet another) coffee in one of Raglan’s wonderful hostelries, I got to thinking about why these are such special places to be (apart from the good coffee being the obvious reason). Were there always such places where one could gather to meet friends to share good food and drink, get some work done or merely sit in a corner to indulge in a bit of people watching? Flicking through RT Vernon’s book, “Raglan”, I noticed there was a whole page dedicated to “Tea and luncheon rooms”. These proliferated in Raglan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This got me to thinking about why tea rooms have always been so important, and continue to be so today. (Or at least their equivalents-cafes) In a recent article about the Raglan Club, I mentioned that a room was set aside for women and children, in the early days of its existence. The good burgers of Raglan were fairly advanced in their thinking, being aware that there were few places for women to rest and meet on their visits to town from outlying farms. It was not acceptable for them to visit male-dominated bars, hotels or gentlemen’s clubs, especially if unchaperoned. Enter, the tea room! A quick look at the history of tea drinking informs us that it was introduced by the 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell in 1840. She and her cohort were finding the gap between lunch and dinner was too long, and tea, cake and sandwiches filled the gap nicely. By the early 1860s, the serving of tea had moved to commercial spaces in London. Kate Cranston’s tea rooms sprung up in Glasgow in 1878, to provide a light lunch in an alcohol free environment. These became very popular in the early 20th century when the temperance movement was strong. Tea rooms provided a respectable environment where women could socialise and eat in public. Of interest to note is that they also played a strong role in the women’s liberation movement. They were important meeting places for young women to plan the suffrage movement, and so tearooms played a role in women’s bold fight for freedom. The provision of refreshments to the public also offered some measure of economic freedom, as it was considered a respectful occupation for single women and widows. From early colonial times in Raglan, provision of sustenance was essential. One of the earliest bakeries was housed in the building in Wallis Street known as The Old Stone Jug. Believed to be a jail during the Maori wars, it was built of limestone and conglomerate and held together by mortar. Mr. Wylie built an oven out the back in the late 1800s. Not only did he provide fresh bread and cakes but he set up tents at cattle sales and other public gatherings in rural areas, to ensure all were wellfed. The first pop-up cafes, perhaps! In 1910, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Bernard and their 3 children arrived from Britain, and bought a local bakery from Mr. Graham. One of the first tea rooms

was added to the existing building and was presided over by Mrs Bernard and her daughter, Alma. Mr. Vernon remembered this business well, saying: “As a boy I always enjoyed visiting the tearooms whenever I was in Raglan. One could get a meal of sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and tea for ninepence. Lovely.” Given that these were early settlers, no family members were exempt from hard work as they set up their new lives. Hence the running of hospitality businesses was not the preserve of single women and widows here! Mrs Walker opened tearooms in her own home in Wallis street in about 1920. In the late 1920s, Mrs Fuller and her daughter, Alison, opened tearooms in the La Trobe buildings, and when those were destroyed by fire, they moved to Langley’s block. Through many changes of proprietors, this remained a popular gathering, eating and teadrinking establishment until well into the 1960s. The Centennial Restaurant at the end of Bow Street was one of the many serving visitors and residents over the years, and it continues to do so - same building, different name! People departing from and arriving at the wharves in James and Wallis Street would also have required sustenance. The Earl’s Tudor tearooms catered to them. And if one has ever wondered about the name of the accommodation establishment at that end of town, it was probably named after the Journey’s End restaurant, run by the Middlemiss family. The Cowleys, Parks, Shaws, McGlashans and Andrews were just some of the few families who ensured that the tradition of fish and chips in Raglan didn’t die, by setting up shops throughout the town. It’s a shame that most of the buildings that housed all these eateries have gone. Even the Old Stone Jug wasn’t saved, despite community efforts. One can imagine the gossip, the reassurances and even just the everyday sharing of news, that those walls held. What comfort those tearooms would have offered to those coming into town from their lonely farms, with the opportunity to share the travails and joys of early settler life! So next time you arrange to meet friends at a café, or decide on a spot of people-watching in a hospitable and happy environment, give a thought to the forerunners of those establishments that preceded all the cafes that we couldn’t do without in Raglan.
