To the Editor It's no surprise the Billy Te Kahika event drew a crowd a few weeks ago. Clearly he's a charismatic man, a good speaker, and the topics he weaves together are almost guaranteed to inspire curiosity.

Also, wouldn't we all like a few more 'reluctant politicians'?!

Unfortunately none of that alters the fact that his theories (and those of his co-speakers at the event) are fanciful and baseless - so flawed they wouldn't make it past a panel of kids outside the Raglan library. Charlie Mitchell wrote a great and discerning overview in Stuff last week of the man and the movement. He also diligently noted the holes in his theories and linked to the evidence base on pretty much everything under discussion.

Just to recap here: existing studies confirm that 5G poses no health risk at the low levels proposed for NZ. Vaccines have and continue to save lives by creating individual and herd immunity. Hmm... but how to argue against the UN's supposed attempt to enslave humanity using the ruse of

the sustainable development goals? From its track record, I doubt the UN could organise its member countries to take over West Coast Tacos.

I almost didn't write this piece, mainly cos I'd like to think this burst of conspiracy thinking is just a storm in a teacup, and nothing but a harmless distraction. But then I thought again. There are plenty of real issues in play affecting our lives and livelihoods, our communities and families.

And we either come together to tackle them or they don't get solved.

It's also an election year and the state of our democracy matters. To the extent that Billy and co. spin us into a spell of distraction or disillusion, they could actually lead us to do collective self-harm- neglecting and damaging the people and things we care about. By which stage, they'll no doubt be out of range (5G allowing). So now we've sated our curiosity, let's look instead for better thinking and leadership than what Billy and his mates are offering.

Let’s celebrate this life giving human right. Could the water be filtered? Is the water tap in the best location? I see that Te Awa at The Base has this set up (photo attached) and promotes it as a way to reduce waste and reduce single use plastics. Sounds like what we agree with. And fresh clean water for the health of the people and the environment.

Homai Te Wai Ora! If this is beyond the scope of ‘Making a Place for the People’ then perhaps ‘Raglan Naturally’ can see the value of this improvement.

T

he distinctive verdigris-coated bell of a “much loved little chapel” in downtown Raglan may have been removed, but it will ring again from St Peter’s just as soon as a local engineering workshop has figured out how best to return it to its original cast bronze appearance.

Ridding the bell of its green patina, which is caused by atmospheric oxidation, is only a small part of a major refurbishment project now underway at the heritage-listed

Anglican church built almost a century ago on the corner of Bow and James Sts. Scaffolding has been erected against the Bow St wall of the building – the same side on which the bell was mounted – and is now awaiting the arrival of a new carbon fibre structure which gets bonded to the original concrete-poured wall, says Raglan Engineering owner Peter Williams.

Two other sides of the church also need major earthquake-strengthening work, he adds, revealing “there are no discernible ties of the walls to the roof, even though the building is (almost) 100 years old”.

Parts of the walls themselves show evidence of efflorescence, or crystalline deposits of salts left behind by water leaks, and the project will also address this problem.

Meantime Peter’s been googling “what you do on church bells” around the corner at his Park Dr workshop, where the old bell now sits amid a clutter of engineering paraphernalia.

“I’ve been watching YouTube,” he laughs as he experiments with the likes of methylated spirits.

And while acknowledging the bell is probably heard more than seen, he reckons

he at least wants to get the paint splatters off its surface.

The bell is set to be reinstalled once the steelwork of its carrier – a structure he says was in remarkable condition for its age – has been sandblasted, galvanised and painted in Hamilton.

Peter and local builder Gus Kendall are together overseeing a project they hope will end up costing under $100,000, but which will bring the church’s earthquake compliance standard up from 10 percent to the 65 percent required for a building with a historical designation.

Gus and Peter are both longtime parishioners, each having had significant life events like marriages and baptisms at St Peter’s over the years. For them, along with a team of other locals who turn up for regular working bees, the refurbishment is all a labour of love.

But even though much of the work is voluntary, they concede there are “lots of costs we will incur”.

All donations and proceeds from previous fundraising ventures now need to be called on, says retired church administrator Jan Mitchell, along with an $11,000 grant received recently after a

successful application to Waikato District Council’s heritage assistance fund.

“It would be lovely if the (wider) community could help too,” she adds, pointing out that the Raglan community put St Peter’s into heritage designation some years ago and that it is one of only a few historic buildings around town to have this protection.

“St Peter’s is a much loved little chapel,” says Jan. It has 25 to 30 regular parishioners – who are meeting on Sundays in the adjacent church hall during the refurbishment – but has a history of regularly attracting others in the community, like surfing families who come back to have their children christened.

“The church has strong community ties,” she points out.

Social experiment shows honesty abounds in Whaingaroa

A

Raglan Area School project to purposefully lose a wallet has restored the student’s faith in humanity with an 80 percent success rate.

Inspired by the Lost Wallet Experiment where researchers dropped off more than 17,000 wallets in 40 countries over the course of more than two years, teacher Joe Rao set the task to see how Raglan fared against cities like London, New York and Warsaw.

Matua Joe’s tailor-made Social Sciences curriculum has a particular focus on teaching kindness, and building empathy and honesty. To help these principles come alive for students and make them meaningful, he has launched programmes such as Roots of Empathy and his version of the World Peace Game.

“I want to try and pass on Gandhi’s message that it is important to stand up and be passionate about the change you want to see in the world,” he says.

Using his own money as temptation, Joe gave the students six wallets to ‘lose’ in various locations around Raglan, including outside the library, Supervalue’s ATM, Raglan Roast and Manu Bay.

The Year 9 and 10 students RJ Rendle, Keira Hishon, Mia Paisnel, Tawhia Wellby, Luke Dymond and their classmates added $10, an identification card and their teacher’s mobile number to each of the wallets and watched from a safe distance to see what would happen.

“We put out a wallet by the ATM and a couple had a look, opened it up and put it back down and walked away. But another guy picked it up and ran off,” Tawhia says.

They held up little hope for their wallet but it was handed in at the police station along with another of the wallets.

“Raewyn (the local constable) says lost items are handed in all the time,” Joe says.

Five out of six of the wallets were eventually handed in with one person contacting the mobile number within five minutes of the wallet being ‘lost’.

Businesses see trading ‘Like summer’ for a while as crowds pack shop and cafes

t may still be winter but business people about town have had a real spring in their step lately after Raglan enjoyed an unseasonal visitor influx described by the local business chamber as “like summer”.

But there’s nervousness too that a fall-off in activity over the past fortnight might be exacerbated once the extended Covid-19 wage subsidy scheme comes to an end.

“Everyone’s collectively holding their breath,” Raglan Business Chamber vice-chair Geoff Kelly told the Chronicle, noting local businesses had reported a slight slackening off since school holidays ended.

Geoff, a familiar face at both The Herbal Dispensary and Raglan Palm Beach Motel, reckons it definitely felt like summer trading around town for a time – in terms of sales and numbers of customers through the door – and says turnover some weekends has been “phenomenal”.

Cafe owners also felt the boon.

Orca Eatery & Bar, for one, was double and treble-booking tables in two-hourly slots on busy weekend nights.

It has been “not a normal winter at all,” says one of Orca’s owners, Lisa Pemberton. “We have literally been booked out by 4pm on Saturdays, our sell-out night,” she adds.

Despite noticing it’s been quieter since the holidays, Orca reckons overall patronage is still well up on last winter – so much so Lisa has been reviewing the restaurant’s online reservation system to make booking a table easier particularly for loyal “regulars”.

She adds there has been plenty of custom too from Auckland, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty visitors.

“The place has been absolutely heaving.”

Raglan’s Harbour View Hotel also benefited from a surge in domestic tourism in the wake of

the Covid crisis, says manager Valentina Pigozzo, with lots of functions and large group bookings.

Many – even those from relatively nearby in Auckland – had been making their first visit to Raglan, she reveals.

While the hotel restaurant can always cater for walk-ins during the week, says Valentina, bookings have become a must during the “very busy” weekends.

Across the road at Isobar – which re-opened only late last year under new management – it’s also been a “super-busy” winter, says assistant manager Andrea Nadgud.

“I can tell you, it’s different for Raglan right now … we’re pretty happy,” says Andrea, who’s previously worked at Solscape, The Shack and the Harbour View.

She says bookings are now advised for Saturday nights and also for the revamped cafe’s ‘Sunday Roasts’.

downtown and Rock-it Kitchen, also report busier-than-usual daytime trade this winter.

“There’s plenty of people around,” confirms The Shack manager Sharnae Van der Helder, while out at Rock-it – near the Wainamu or Ocean Beach turnoff – owner Sarah Kay describes recent patronage as “fantastic”.

“It feels like we’re getting the late summer business we missed out on (at lockdown),” she says, adding she’s particularly grateful for ongoing support from locals.

Even so, despite an overflowing carpark at weekends especially, she notes “there’s definitely been a dip since the school holidays”.

Locals report that ULO’s Kitchen, which opens several nights a week in the former Wallis Bistro premises, has also been doing a roaring Friday/Saturday trade.

Meantime Raglan Holiday Park Papahua has been “super-busy” since reopening in mid-May after lockdown, says office manager

Haven Tahere, with only a hint of things quietening down now.

Business-wise the winter custom has felt a lot like spring, says Haven, and she attributes the steady stream of holidaymakers partly to a new marketing push. Dinner vouchers, coffee vouchers and breakfast packs to be redeemed locally are factored into accommodation bookings, she says, and this is attracting “lots of families”.

A “third night free” promotion has also pushed up bookings, making the 300-site camp noticeably busier this winter.

Geoff Kelly says the camp’s high occupancy illustrates how the business community is working together, and likens the voucher system to the ‘Waiheke dollar’ idea hatched after the lockdown to reboot the Hauraki Gulf island’s economy.

Places for People – He Whenua He Tangata

T

hank you to all the people who stopped in at the People for Places, He Whenua He Tangata drop-in sessions held in the weekend.

We had approximately 100 people attend and a good cross section of people – residents both local and rural, visitors and retail who gave strong support for the purpose of the project- creating places downtown for people to gather and enjoy.

We received approximately 280 comments which validated the general concepts we presented. We are now working on incorporating these comments, ideas and suggestions into the next iteration of the designs. Bow St and the carpark outside Orca were confirmed as the places best suiting this project's pop-up, experimental nature.

As expected, there were plenty of comments outside our immediate project scope but still of value for future projects of this nature (as well as other issues on the mind

of the community). These will be collated and kept by the Community Board and Raglan Naturally for future use, including passing on to Council where needed and appropriate.

Clearly, the issue of parking downtown came through strongly, including support for reverse angle carparking, and we will be working closely with Council on this in parallel with this project.

Other prominent suggestions were to consider wind, shade and lighting in the plans, to design the spaces to meet a range of purposes, to draw on and reflect the character of Raglan, and to focus wherever possible on quality over quantity. This gives us some great momentum to take forward.

The next stages in the project will be a set of workshops next week at Raglan Area school to allow students to put forward their aspirations for this project. We will also continue to review in more detail the data from the weekend. From these sources we will prepare design concepts to be presented to the community for comment mid September.

Our objective is to get the project installed before the Christmas period so that everyone can enjoy the areas through summer and we can look at any adjustments or enhancements that may be required to make the installation permanent. There will also be opportunities for the public to assist in the installation phase of the project so if interested please let us know.

n a sunny winter Saturday at Nguaranui Beach, nine locals stepped up to do their first Grading for Kickboxing4Youth.

Enabled by the Raglan Community House, Kickboxing4Youth aims to provide a healthy space where youth can go to develop skills, confidence, physical fitness, and importantly a place where they feel a sense of acceptance and purpose.

Coach Jade Penn said, “Our club has a mixture of striving youth and adult mentors which creates a special dynamic in the club and a breeding ground for success. During grading day we allow our students to set their own desired achievement level.

Some want to move forward step by step, others in leaps and bounds. It takes a lot of commitment and courage to see through a traditional martial arts grading

and everyone put their hearts on the line to do what it took to go home with the belt. As a coach I could not be more proud” On Grading Day, three women and six men were put through their paces, and even though there were thoughts of giving up and some tears everyone passed. We now have two white belts, two green belts and five blue belts. That is a major achievement for a small club and is a sign of true momentum.

After grading students really start to feel empowered and take ownership of the club.

“We are all excited to see where we go from here” said Jade.

The RCB also deliberated over a number of funding applications to the discretionary fund, these included: • The Institute of Awesome for automated external defibrillators • The Raglan Community Arts Council for the creative space building renovations • Raglan Community Radio for the Whaingaroa Talent Factory Youth Event Our next Raglan Community Board meeting is on Wednesday 16th September at the town hall supper room, our public forum commences at 1.30pm, with our official meeting starting at 2pm, all welcome!

Inaugural Whaingaroa Talent Factory event set for October

haingaroa Talent Factory (WTF) is a new talent event for youth aged between 13-18 that will be held at the Raglan Town Hall on Saturday, October 10, this year.

There is $1500 prize money up for grabs, additional spot prizes and a chance to record a track at CSR studios are on offer for young Whaingaroa musicians in an event currently being put together by Raglan Community Radio, Raglan Community House and Soundsplash.

WTF will be run in the style of X-factor, with the organising team set to announce who will be filling the judging and mentoring roles in a couple of weeks. Their names have not officially been confirmed yet but are expected to be experienced industry professionals.

Live performances by local youth bands at Raglan Community Radio's 25th Anniversary celebration event.

The event will have an underlying kaupapa of youth mental wellbeing with Naomi Tuaopepe bringing the Soundsplash Wellbeing team along to run the BBQ and ensure a safe environment for our young people.

Aaron from Raglan Community Radio says they realised an event like this would work here after three young acts performed

at their 25th anniversary celebration in the Town Hall last November.

“We were blown away by the talent on offer, but also by the way families, teachers and local musicians instantly swung in behind the young performers to get them ready for the big night.

Likewise, the Community House has long been focused on providing activities for local Rangitahi and manager Mike

Rarere says they’re excited to be supporting a collaborative project that celebrates their talent.

Whaingaroa Talent Factory is being produced with the support of Creative Communities and the Raglan Community Board.

• Safe recreational activity is allowed in local area.

• Travel is severely limited.

• All gatherings cancelled and all public venues closed.

• Businesses closed except for essential services (e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics, petrol stations) and lifeline utilities.

• Educational facilities closed.

• Rationing of supplies and requisitioning of facilities possible.

• Reprioritisation of healthcare services.

• People instructed to stay home in their bubble other than for essential personal movement – including to go to work, school if they have to, or for local recreation.

• Physical distancing of two metres outside home (including on public transport), or one metre in controlled environments like schools and workplaces.

• People must stay within their immediate household bubble, but can expand this to reconnect with close family / whānau, or bring in caregivers, or support isolated people. This extended bubble should remain exclusive.

• Schools (years 1 to 10) and Early Childhood Education centres can safely open, but will have limited capacity. Children should learn at home if possible.

• Public venues such as museums, libraries and pools can open if they comply with public health measures and ensure 1 metre physical distancing and record keeping.

• Event facilities, including cinemas, stadiums, concert venues and casinos can have more than 100 people at a time, provided that there are no more than 100 in a defined space, and the groups do not mix.

• Health and disability care services operate as normally as possible.

• It is safe to send your children to schools, early learning services and tertiary education. There will be appropriate measures in place.

his week the Chronicle caught up with Raglan Junior Rugby Club President Rachel Hudson about how the season has been progressing this year.

I know it's early but how is the season going so far?

The season is going so great! (We are 3 weeks in now of 10 ) The kids are having fun and that's the main thing right?! The

competition side has been taken away from the senior grades this year due to Covid. I actually think it's a massive positive. It's teaching us to not take it so seriously, that it's about the kids getting out there with their friends. We all love a win I know, but I feel we are enjoying all of the aspects of the game right now. There was a huge message from New Zealand Rugby Union this year about what the top things kids actually enjoyed about being apart of grass roots rugby and winning wasn’t at the top. Half time oranges

and playing with mates was. How cool is that!

Something we set out this year to do was to get as many kids and supporters in our RJRC hoodies. So many people got on board and we are looking so slick out there!

What impact has Covid had on the season?

This year has been cut short by approx.

10 weeks, no Reps whatsoever, which is quite gutting for our 12th grade team as there would have been quite a few definates in the Roller Mills tourney (the first time to wear the Waikato Colours).

We just feel lucky to be getting any season to be honest - I mean look what’s going on in the rest of the world. We were the first club in the Waikato to be able to practice after Covid.

Emma Snowden and I were ready and just so keen to get the kids out there. It was a real moment seeing that. Just pure joy seeing the kids out there doing normal stuff after being all stuck within their bubbles.

The strange thing is we have had the biggest numbers we’ve seen. We weren’t expecting that. Pre-Covid we were only just there, if not short of fielding teams. Post Covid a lot of Tamariki came out wanting to play - of course we are never going to say no.

We are a very proud and strong club, no child should ever miss out!

I would like to give huge thanks to all the coaches, managers and committee that step up to represent and lead our club. But mostly to Emma Snowden, I really (I mean our club) could not do it without her and a massive thanks to Karyn O Connor for her amazing admin, printing and being there to help at any stage Rach Hudson, RJRC President

T

he Chronicle had a chat to Breaden Rossiter, captain of the Raglan Area School soccer team about their current season.

Who is your team made up of?

The team this year is made up of a group of boys Year 9-11s from Raglan Area School,

St John's College, St Paul's College and Hamilton Boys High School.

How did it come together?

A passionate group of kids that desire to play football/soccer and represent Raglan Area School.

What are the benefits of combining schools?

A benefit of the combined schools is that we didn’t know each other and we made new connections. Also at the start of the season we were short on players and we were very fortunate to have them come play for us. Plus they bring a variety of different skills to the team.

How is the team going this season?

The team this year is going good as we have won 3 out of 4 and placed top in our table at this point of time. We lost our first game, even though we played well, but from then on we have been on a winning streak, winning our last 3 games and by a convincing margin.

It's a unique season because of Covid Has this had an impact on the team?

Nothing hasn’t really changed but what we have noticed is that we have a shorter season as the knock-out cup has been cancelled. We were really gutted as its a competition we do really well in, making the semi finals last year What is the end of season outcome you are hoping for?

The end outcome is that we finish top of division and win with a statement, also to enjoy our time as a collective.

he future is looking rosier this year for a time-honoured annual tradition in which the Raglan district’s country schools host their own Calf Club Days and then combine for a finale – Agricultural Group Day. The Raglan Girls’ and Boys’ Agricultural Club, which oversees the series, says it’s pleased to confirm that this year’s events will be able to be held normally.

“While Mycoplasma Bovis remains a concern in New Zealand, the Ministry for Primary Industries has given us the go-ahead and advised that less restrictions

will be needed than last year,” say the organisers.

All pet calves entered will need to display a NAIT identification tag but that’s a compulsory requirement for farmers anyway.

The only other possible MPI requirement in relation to M.bovis – which causes a range of conditions in cattle – will be for foot baths or mats.

The dates of this year’s events have now also been set after discussions with school principals or their representatives.

Waitetuna will hold its Calf Day on October 16, Te Uku/Raglan on October 20 and Te Mata on October 21.

The combined schools’ Agricultural Group Day will

be at Te Uku two days later, on October 23.

Parents with children who’d like to take part, but haven’t competed previously, are advised to contact their local school for further information.

“There are local farmers who support these days and who are willing to provide lambs to be reared and then to take them back afterwards,” add the organisers. “We also have information available at the schools on rearing a young animal and the preparation required for show days.”

Ideally children should be choosing their pets about seven weeks before the first show day, which would mean making a decision in the next few weeks.

But there’s no hard and fast rule – some choose earlier, some later.

However no animal on the day – whether it’s a calf, goat kid or lamb – can be under three weeks old.

Calf Days and Agricultural Group Days may be something of an institution locally, having been around for about eight decades now, but organisers are always conscious of the need to attract fresh interest.

“We would love to see new competitors,” they say.
