R

aglan resident Geoff Rawley reckons it’s only fair to “do his bit” out in the community – which in his case means he’s just started delivering Meals on Wheels about town once a week.

Day next year – gets one of these daily meals at her Wainui Rd home.

Every Thursday rain or shine he’s there at the local rest home up on Manukau Rd at 11.30am sharp, getting loaded up from the kitchen where nutritious meals are prepared and packaged daily.

Longtime Bayview Rd resident Fred Gilbert – who’s due to hit 100 this December – also gets a meal delivered every day around noon. He’s a unique case in that he also delivers the meals around town one day a week, to the elderly of course but all of them younger than him.

“Seven meals including one cold and two desserts,” calls out the kitchenhand when the Chronicle pays a visit. “And don’t forget it’s D for desserts,” she adds just to ensure this new kid on the block gets the meals right.

Geoff duly loads the meals into his car, checks his task sheet with names and addresses of recipients of the midday meals and heads off around town, delivering to an elderly clientele who mostly live alone but value their independence.

Geoff’s modest about having volunteered. “It keeps me off the streets,” he laughs. And it’s something he can feel good about.

Remarkably Fred’s been doing his “bit” now for 40-odd years, ever since joining Raglan’s St John Ambulance service. It was St John which distributed the meals about town back then – before the system changed and Meals on Wheels switched to delivery by hospital boards around the country.

Fred does the deliveries in his own battery-powered Nissan Leaf and reckons it doesn’t take long, only half an hour or so around town.

Raglan Rest Home and Hospital administrator Odette Hulena says that whoever is behind the wheel, the daily visits provide a friendly face and a hot meal that mean a lot to many older folk. “Volunteers bring joy, connection and that real Raglan community spirit to our elders.”

The volunteers in turn get a sense of purpose and wellbeing from time and energy spent on this simple task, she adds.

“Giving has a reciprocating effect.”

And it’s not just Meals on Wheels volunteers who selflessly contribute to the smooth running of this rest home and hospital. Many other ‘happy helpers’, as they’re called, take the tea trolley around to residents’ rooms while some come and play cards, do puzzles, arrange flowers and do a myriad of different tasks.

Native seedlings planted at Wainui Reserve from Waikato District Council

ver the past few weeks, 9257 native trees and shrubs have been planted at Wainui Reserve in Raglan.

The seedlings have been planted in the gully sections. They include Rimu, Kawakawa, Kowhai, Puriri, Griselinia, as well as a number of different Coprosma varieties.

Wainui Reserve is a 140 hectare farm park, managed by Waikato District Council. There are several trails and picnic spots for people to use, as well as access to the beach and surfing.

“It’s a great space for people to explore replanted and regenerating native forest,” says Waikato District Council Ecologist, Ben Wolf. “Over the years, various planting works have been undertaken and there are native plantings covering

hectares of the reserve at various stages of maturity. This latest planting is adjacent to some older, more established bush areas.

Lots of walkers use the reserve, and this will add to the beautiful green space for them to enjoy, as well as creating more habitat for native species.”

Planting has also been done at Manu Bay. A total of 1400 plants have been added to the hillside. Council worked with the local community and considered their needs.

“We were told people park at the top of the road and walk down to Manu Bay, so we made sure we considered this when we created the planting plan.”

The planting took place over three weeks and was done by local Waikato companies Landscape Management Services and InForm Trees & Landscapes. “They’ve done a great job!”

Azza serves up a hospo win Rainy-Day Indoor Games to Tire Out Your Dog

ormer Whāingaroa Raglan hospo stalwart Aaron ‘Azza’ Bidois has been named Hamilton Hospitality Personality of the Year at the 2026 Waikato Hospitality Awards, recognising nearly two decades of great coffee, honest food and warm hospitality.

ith more rain and cold weather ahead, and (no doubt!) busy schedules that often keep your dog indoors, getting enough exercise can become a challenge - so say goodbye to dog parent guilt by having game time indoors!

Azza is best known in Raglan for establishing The Raglan Social Club in 2016 alongside former wife Rach Hudson, creating a mecca for great food and coffee – served with a generous helping of Azza’s energetic personality.

“My ethos has always been, don’t overcomplicate things, and be personable,” he says.

1. The Treat Hunt - Dogs love using their noses, so why not turn snack or meal time into a search mission? Hide a few small treats around your living room, while your dog sits and waits - then release them to search! Start with easy hiding places, some in full view, then gradually make the game more challenging, and across more rooms. This activity provides both physical movement and valuable mental stimulation.

Tip: If your dog eats kibble, use a portion (or all!) of their breakfast or dinner instead of treats for a bigger game time!

And being personable comes naturally to Azza. Those who frequented The Raglan Social Club could always count on a genuine chat and a warm welcome.

In a previous life, Azza spent 10 years as a hairdresser before making the switch to hospitality.

“I always did hospo alongside hairdressing, so it went hand-in-hand. That focus on people and service just carried over.”

Learning how to make a mean coffee while working as a hairdresser came in handy when he and Rach set about transforming a former butcher’s shop into a bustling suburban café in Hamilton.

“I started with Sugar Bowl back in 2005. We kept it simple – good coffee, good food – and even after we sold in 2015, it’s still really popular and going strong.”

His hospitality journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Another Hamilton venture, serving coffee and bagels, bore the brunt of the Covid years.

“I set up my little bagel shop and Covid sort of smashed that.”

More recently, Azza has been on the grind at Little Honey in Hamilton. Established in 2025, the start-up is exactly the kind of challenge he enjoys taking on these days – without the pressures of ownership.

“After running my own places for so long, I realised it’s just easier to work for other people,” he says.

For Azza, the award is a fitting acknowledgement of 20 years in hospitality – and he’s still doing it with a smile and the same passion for people.

“At the moment, with hospo, I’m totally into it. I love it.

Mostly, I just love interacting with people.”

2. The Cup Game - Place a treat under one of three cups and shuffle them around while your dog watches. Let your dog sniff and choose the cup hiding the prize. This game combines mental stimulation with a little movement and can become increasingly challenging as your dog gets better at it by using other items under the cups to throw them off the scent. It’s also great for working on impulse control!

3. Obstacle Course - Turn your living room/hallway/etc. into a mini obstacle course using cushions, chairs, blankets, and boxes. Guide your dog over, under, and around the obstacles - you can also have treats at one end that they have to find their way to. It is a fun way to get your dog moving while also improving coordination and confidence. (Get the kids involved with this one!)

pper Bow Street residents have objected to plans for a telecommunications tower near the Raglan water tower, although the revised site remains the preferred option.

Residents told Wednesday’s community board meeting they had not been properly consulted. The site was selected after concerns about an earlier Long Street proposal, where the tower would have cut across previous work to remove overhead infrastructure.

Raglan Community Board chair Ross Wallis said the revised plan would replace two existing telecommunications towers with one larger pole carrying equipment for both companies. It would be taller, but positioned closer to the water tower and nearby vegetation to reduce its visual impact.

Conexa considered several locations, but the tower needs sufficient height to address mobile coverage gaps in Raglan East.

He said Conexa could legally install telecommunications infrastructure within the road reserve, but had chosen to work with the community board on an alternative location.

WSL impact still being assessed Ross said no decision had been made on whether the World Surf League event would return to Raglan, with the board seeking a clearer picture of its economic, community and cultural impacts.

The council’s economic development team has committed to finding funding for Marketview electronic payment data specific to Raglan, to be commissioned by Go Raglan.“If this was to happen again, we want to have a say in the build-up to it,” Ross said.

He said the event was well run, particularly the buses and traffic management, but communication around resident passes could have been clearer.

The board also wants a clearer picture of council costs.

Ross said different fees are allocated in different ways, making it difficult to determine whether the event was costneutral or weigh those costs against wider benefits.

He praised Poihākena Marae’s leadership and hospitality and said the board had become involved only after it was apparent the event was going ahead.

“We didn’t really like the process. It would have been nice to have more time,” he said.

Ross said a public community debrief should take place before any future event is considered.

Local voice central to council merger Waikato District, Waipā and South Waikato have supported the Western Waikato proposal, while Hamilton and Taupō have left the outcome to the Government’s backstop process.

Ross said smaller communities would still need meaningful representation under any larger council structure.

He said any new regional authority would still need community councils or boards representing individual towns and districts.

Staff changes disrupt board work Ross said staff turnover and restructuring within Waikato District Council had made it harder for the board to maintain continuity.

Its democracy support officer had resigned and its senior leadership contact had taken redundancy, with temporary staff filling the roles.

“You feel like you’re taking a step forward and two steps back,” he said.

Ross said individual properties would still need to meet engineering and resource consent requirements.

“We’re kind of getting outside our lane there,” he said.

Raglan Area School senior ball “A Night in Vegas” from Raglan Area School

ecently our senior Raglan Area School (Years 11 - 13) students had their annual school ball.

The hall was transformed into a dazzling Las Vegas inspired spectacle, with students making red-carpet entrances, complete with our celebrity-style paparazzi.

“DJ ADL” aka: Adam Lai - ex RAS student and DJ extraordinaire, set the dance floor on fire and had everyone dancing from the very first beat.

Magician brentmcleodmagic.com was busy working the floor going from group to group with a whole range of tricks that left us flabbergasted and wondering how he did it.

The food from ‘Aloha Sushi’ was next level and our awesome ‘Feed The Kids’ crew provided us with delicious slices and a much appreciated sausage sizzle.

A huge thank you goes out to all the people who worked tirelessly to provide the most magical night for everyone; this included decorating the hall, providing games and entertainment, taking photos, doing all the behind the scenes

admin and even coming in early on Saturday morning to pack everything up again - you are all legends.

A big thank you also to those individuals who generously provided sponsorship for students in need - you certainly made someone's night all the more special!

Most importantly were the students. Everyone looked amazing and had the most wonderful celebration which they all thoroughly deserved.

nd just like that... another season of Raglan Junior Rugby is in the books.

What an awesome season it's been!

Muddy boots, freezing mornings, big tackles, fearless runs, belly laughs, a few tears, plenty of lessons and sidelines loud enough that our kids could never doubt for a second just how supported they were.

But the thing we're proudest of isn't a scoreboard.

It's our kids!

To our coaches and managers — THANK YOU! You've given countless hours to our kids this season. You've taught rugby, but you've also taught confidence, discipline, courage, teamwork and belief. You've celebrated the wins, navigated the hard days and kept turning up. The influence you have on these kids reaches much further than a rugby field, and we're so grateful for every bit of mahi you've put in.

A massive thank you also goes to our 2026 committee. So much of what makes a rugby season happen is work nobody ever sees. Thank you for the meetings, certificates, admin, organising, problem solving, decision making and countless jobs done quietly in the background to give our kids another awesome season.

And a very special shout out to our new club President, Luca Bosch. RJRC is incredibly lucky to have such an epic person stepping up to lead our club. Luca brings a huge heart, a level head, a willingness to get stuck in and a genuine care for our kids and this community.

Raglan Medical provides care for a community of approximately 6,300 patients. You will work alongside a highly qualified, friendly and supportive team in a varied role that offers strong professional connection and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for our local community.

About the role The successful candidate will be confident working both autonomously and collaboratively to promote, improve, maintain and restore health. You will demonstrate a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, effective written and oral communication skills, sound computer skills and competence in clinical assessment.

About you Applicants must be New Zealand registered nurses with a current practising certificate and have a minimum of two years’ nursing experience in New Zealand. Applicants must also be legally entitled to work in New Zealand.

Preference will be given to registered nurses with general practice experience, including certification in cervical screening, immunisations and chronic disease management. However, the successful candidate will be supported by the practice to gain appropriate qualifications for the role.

What we offer The position is 0.6 FTE, with the possibility of increasing to 0.8 FTE depending on skills and experience. We offer a supportive team environment, meaningful work in a close-knit rural community, and opportunities to grow your career in primary care.
