Dear Editor While we are all experiencing so much rain, and thinking about the rise of our tidal waters, some in Whāingaroa are looking to sell and move to higher ground, while others are barricading their sections which face the sea, somewhat like King Canute, and yet another group is concerned regarding the inability of their young members to play soccer.

Soccer needs a secure pitch with good drainage; this then makes it possible to run swiftly, to control the ball and to change direction and the course as the game flows. A muddy field is not ideal for this. I realise that soccer is a minority game, but playing a team sport helps youngsters to learn about cooperation, loyalty and their own identity.

Soccer has a long and growing history; it is also a growing sport especially when it comes to women's participation and not just locally but also internationally.

Often in the past recreational grounds were placed in areas of lesser market value, thus we have muddy soccer fields

Full story on page 5. with inadequate drainage, and while Raglan need not attempt to emulate Manchester United or City, perhaps the current situation could be improved, or alternate facilities offered?

From Ex Soccer Mum. Dear Editor Thanks for the informative and very appropriately-timed article in the Raglan Chronicle of 14 July 2022 regarding some mid-winter child-friendly activities and resources that will definitely make a parent's life easier on these wet days.

It was great to see the wonderful Raglan Toy Library featured. This is a real boon for anyone trying to entertain young children indoors and allows them to have new and interesting toys every week, at a minimal cost to their parents and carers.

I certainly appreciate this service in my new role as a grandmother! And the staff and volunteers are extremely helpful and tolerant.

Many other great ideas were shared too.

However, one important option that was overlooked was the Raglan Museum as a fun and educational destination for children! As a child, I had numerous visits to our local museum, from a very young age. I can still picture some of the exhibits all these many years later! The Raglan

Dear Editor, We're sure we speak on behalf of all who have had covid in Raglan, when we express grateful thanks to the Raglan Covid Response Team and the Raglan Medical Centre for their excellent service on our behalf. It was such a surprise and a blessing to find 2 cartons of goodies at our door, including frozen meals and tissues. These enabled us to isolate without any worries. Safer Raglan urged at send off for Kyle

heartfelt plea to “make Raglan a safer place” with easier access to defibrillators has been made following the sudden death of Kyle Leuthart, an award-winning real estate agent also variously described in tributes last week as a gun surfer, diver, “Mr Greenfingers” gardener, family man and all-round good guy.

Chris Leuthart told a large crowd at his son’s Hamilton Gardens funeral that emergency services did their best to save the 49 year old after an unexpected heart attack. However there was no defibrillator on hand for a crucial 15 minutes. Chris believes a defibrillator could’ve made a difference along with the CPR his son was receiving.

Raglan has now a “burgeoning” population, he points out, and the town needs not only more defibrillators 24/7 but also to be better aware of their locations.

And he vowed to make it happen.

“Raglan is a fantastic community,” Chris said. “We can do anything.”

Chris – describing the Monday afternoon turnout at the gardens’ pavilion as “overwhelming” – told of Kyle’s upbringing in Raglan as a schoolboy, and of his adventures and hi-jinks overseas before returning to his hometown to start a family and a new career in real estate.

He described Kyle’s short life as being very much like a whirlwind, and accidentprone to boot. Having started out at Raglan Area School – after Chris and his then wife Sharleen moved here from Huntly – he progressed on to Southall, New Plymouth Boys’ High and then Hamilton Boys’ where once he got struck by lightning “and survived!”

He was later to narrowly escape the Bali bombing, Chris recalled, “but sadly he did not get out of this recent incident alive”.

Kyle ventured overseas after getting a Bachelor of Science degree at Canterbury University and working for a time with MAF, trapping gypsy moths.

He was an adventure-seeking guy, Chris chuckled, snowboarding on his OE off what looked like 40 metre-high drops. “He was a daredevil. He had no fear.”

Chris told how, after meeting his “beloved Tara”, Kyle returned to Raglan where the couple had three sons – Sunny, Cruz and Sage. The proud Dad was busy most recently taking his sons to rugby, soccer and motocross. He taught them to fish and instilled in them his love of gardening.

To say Kyle liked to have fun was something of an understatement, Chris said. “He worked hard, played hard and lived life to the fullest.” Father and son – only 20 years apart – also enjoyed an “amazing” business partnership, with Chris conducting auctions for Kyle and LJ Hooker.

Chris spoke poignantly too of Kyle’s kindness, generosity and sincerity, adding: “He was the treasured son, soulmate and brother I never had.”

Local kaumatua Sean Ellison told of his profound sadness at the loss of Kyle, who he said was “taken far too young, far too soon”. He added he had deep respect for Kyle in his work and in his altruistic efforts in the community, where he often organised sponsorship for various projects and clubs around town.

Kyle had left his mark on the Raglan community, he said, and “we can follow his example by living life fully”.

“Today is a gift and a blessing,” he reminded the service.

Those at the celebration of Kyle’s life heard how a hikoi, or tiki tour as Chris put it, was organised around Raglan the previous weekend. It was Kyle’s final farewell to some of his favourite spots which included the golf club and Manu Bay, and was met with a “tremendous reception”.

LJ Hooker principals Greig and Tash Metcalfe spoke of Kyle’s work selling real estate the past 15 years. “For us he was such a star,” Greig said.

Kyle won many professional accolades and had a shelf full of awards back in their Bow St office, which was turned into something of a shrine once news of his sudden death was known.

Old friends also remembered Kyle as supportive, a man of integrity, as solid as a rock and a Raglan boy at heart.

“He made friends wherever he went and touched many hearts,” said one.

Kyle was a bit of a likeable rogue, added another. “I thought I’d be speaking at his 50th, not his funeral.”

Year 9B’s Maths with Xtreme Zero Waste Raglan Business Chamber

A message from the chamber

T

he chamber was delighted to host one of our first public events in a while on 21 July. We made this event open to members of the public as well, as we thought there was such an opportunity for all local businesses to benefit from it.

Hayley Willers and Jaime Lomas from DTI Lawyers presented. Our members will recognise their names as Hayley and Jaime have presented several sessions via Zoom through the challenging times of Covid Lockdowns – these sessions were invaluable when it came to the Public Health Act requirements around My Vaccine Pass and how employers and employees could navigate the ever-changing levels/traffic lights and rules we were required to follow.

In this recent presentation we asked people to send any questions through so that Hayley and Jaime could cover off points that were relevant to attendees.

Through this we covered a wide range of topics, which was useful information for all attendees.

Hayley is a Director in DTI’s Commercial and Property Team specialising in private and commercial property transaction, property development, and relationship property matters. She has been practising since 2006 and has extensive experience dealing in a wide range of commercial and private client matters.

Hayley has a pragmatic approach to all matters and applies her experience and skills to achieve great results for her clients; you could see this in her comments around Shareholders Agreements and constitutions – it turns out a few of us aren’t quite using the parameters correctly!

We also covered leases – a pertinent topic of conversation after the Covid shutdowns and the impact on tenants and landlords in this changing market.

Attendees had also asked about Asset Protection in the case of relationship breakdowns, and Hayley covered off some very clear points for us to take home.

Jaime is a Director, Employment Law. She has significant dispute resolution experience. She takes a pragmatic and practical approach to achieve commercial and workable solutions for her clients. She is committed to understanding the issues her clients face and the impact on their businesses or on them personally.

Her experience in employment and resource management law provides her with a range of skills and a well-rounded perspective to advise on both practical and technical issues. She pursues the prompt resolution of disputes through direct negotiation and mediation.

The questions put to Jaime covered the differences between an employee versus contractor, and the difference between a performance process and a disciplinary process. Attendees also wanted to know about updating employment agreements and developing and updating workplace policies which are used to make expected behaviour in the workplace clear.

I want to thank Jaime and Hayley for their time – their support for members during the year has been substantial; they have both invested several hours in helping members and responding to members’ queries through zoom. They follow up where needed and it has been invaluable support in an everchanging landscape.

n Tuesday the 31st May, Karen, who is a worker at Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) came to our maths class and explained how maths is a big part of XZW.

We then worked out the volume of the recycling bin and then the volume of a non-crushed can.

Next, everyone estimated how many could fit in the recycling bin. After that we put this to the test to see if our calculations were correct but sadly all groups were WRONG! We had a conversation with Karen and came to the conclusion that a cylinder shaped can and a rectangular recycling bin were not compatible, but in the end we could fit roughly 60 non-crushed cans in the bin. We decided to see how many crushed cans the rubbish bin could hold.

We put our shoes on and started stomping on cans.

Once all were flattened the group that had the most

crushed cans in the bin counted and it came to a total of 324 crushed cans. Our calculations were pretty close. After doing this activity, we cleaned up. Karen then explained that maths really does have a big impact in life.

On Tuesday the 14th of June we got into the school vans and drove to XZW. When we arrived we met Karen and walked over to the metal yard where we were introduced to Dusta the big metal man and Simon, who helped build it. We talked about the proportions that they considered when building Dusta.

We were then given a challenge to make a properly proportioned metal man out of the junk that was supplied to us from the metal yard. Check out some of our creations. We would like to thank Karen and XZW for accommodating us and showing us how maths can be used in the real world.

Wharf improvements receive official blessing

n ambitious draft strategy for the future of the Whāingaroa Harbour will kick off with improvements to the wharf.

The work, including construction of a new pontoon, an eastern walkway, kayak ramp and balustrade was given an official blessing by kaumatua Atutahi Riki in an early morning ceremony.

The maintenance work, beginning Monday, August 15, includes repairing some areas of concrete and steel that have worn away over time on the underside of the wharf.

Waikato District Council project delivery community projects team leader Reuben Rink says there will be little disruption throughout the project, with public access available at all times.

The new pontoon, which is awaiting resource consent, is scheduled to start early September providing short term mooring for boats to unload, alleviating queues at the wharf.

Lead designers Beca expect the walkway, kayak ramp and piles complete before Christmas.

The pontoon itself will be built off-site, then brought to the site by truck and lifted by crane into position early in the new year.

The balustrade design will take inspiration from the walking bridge and local artist Simon Te Wheoro will create panels that acknowledge the ‘fruits of the harbour’.

The draft strategy also includes actions to improve the health of the harbour, improve walking, cycling and boating connections, address parking issues at the wharf, enhance the Te Akau boat ramp and limit commercialisation of the harbour, among other things.

Council expects to finalise the plan by late September 2022.

Local parents dedicated to supporting their kids for the love of rugby league I

n this week's Chronicle we caught up with a group of local parents and their kids who are dedicated to the game of rugby league. With little opportunities for them to play in a local team, their parents drive them over the hill for games and trainings every week.

These families travel through to Hamilton, Ngāruawāhia and Tūrangawaewae to play for their respective clubs. According to sources, there was a rugby league team from Raglan called either the Whāingaroa Divers or Whāingaroa Rugby League possibly in the '80s or '90s but there hasn't been an active club for some time.

Harley Muru, who was an ex-player for Tūrangawaewae, now coaches his son's team and also trains the senior premier league team at Tūrangawaewae.

Having grown up within the rugby league community, it was important for Harley to keep that connection with his club and also to his marae.

"We're part of a generation of players and we're trying to keep it going by investing in Waikato Rugby League," said Harley.

He recalls Raglan locals from rugby league like Bob Tukiri, (ex-Waikato Rugby League Chairman) and Bubba Riki (legendary Waikato League coach) having an influence on him and his love for the game.

While the commutes for trainings and weekend games can add up, the parents are

dedicated to supporting their kids to play league.

"The clubs appreciate that we are going all the way over to Ngāruawāhia every week and recognise the amount of effort we put in - it's about building a bridge back to Raglan as well," says Harley.

Aaron (Harry) Saunders a 4th generation Waikato rugby league man reached out to the Chronicle to make us aware of these tamariki and would like others to have the opportunity to play next season if they would like to choose league as their sport.

"Small communities like Taharoa has a team in the comp and they are competing well, having just added a wahine team," says Aaron.

He would like to see a team resurface in Raglan. "I guess firstly let's see how much interest there is. Players would be first then managers and sponsors. If there are any local businesses that are league fans and can see the benefits for the Raglan community to have a rugby league team to represent us all then please be in touch."

His strengths are coaching and playing footy with the kids. In the meantime he has reached out to Whatawhata Wolves and they are happy to direct any Raglan kids wanting to play their way (closest club to Raglan).

Pre-season musters start around March and season winds up in August. All games are played at Hopuhopu sports ground on Saturday mornings. It is an awesome festival atmosphere with kai and plenty of excellent rugby league for entertainment.

and South Islands) so he will be quite familiar with issues that arise in our community. He also spent 10 years working with Christian Camps in the Waikato.

For 42 years Nigel was married to Audrey Joy (nee Ward), from Putaruru. They have 3 children, Hansi, Sarah and Peter, plus 5 mokopuna.

Joy, a sister of Cheryll Peart, passed into the Lord's presence in 2020.

Nigel's preaching is truly Biblical and practical. He has a passion to see the local Church make an impact for the Lord on it's community, and he loves spending quality time with people – and not only with Church members.

Nigel works with great enthusiasm.

He can be found most days at the Church office, and welcomes anyone to pop in for a chat, or to seek prayer or counsel at 3 Stewart Street.

Nigel's interests include storytelling (he belonged to the national Story-tellers' Association), playing croquet and choral singing.

Nigel is convinced of the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, having seen again and again it radically changing lives for the better. He produces a daily email devotional, and is happy to add anyone to his list of recipients. He can be reached at 825 8276 (Church Office).

railblazing emerging artist, Arahi is touring with his ‘There’s Nothing Like It - Piano Tour’ 2022 next month!

Coming to The Yard, Raglan on Friday August 19 (taking their own baby grand piano with them across the North Island thanks to the genius of our friends at Undergrand)

In collaboration with Undergrand, Arahi comes to the stage paired back, pouring heart and soul over the keys of this exquisite snow white baby grand piano. This show promises a delicate and insightful look at Arahi, his songs and their many facets. In his words, “it’s a chance to really get to know the songs and the meaning behind them, because we’re in such an intimate setting, which doesn’t happen too often.”

With a reputation for being a bona fide artistic soul, presented as a master of his craft, Arahi juxtaposes classic and contemporary sound with an eclectic, eccentric style. Arahi calls on theatrics and grandiose displays of sound and vision, meticulously crafted, together with a flair for showmanship, constantly pushing the boundaries of Indie music.

Arahi released ‘The Best Thing I’ve Ever Seen’ a blissful, hazy tune, in April, which as Arahi aptly sums up, feels “like a red hot 80's sun setting on roller-skating silhouettes along a golden boulevard.”

The track was released with a bonus B-side - a mesmerizing dance remix of Arahi’s 2020 single ‘Searching In The Sun’.

Arahi released their new single ‘There’s Nothing Like It’ this Matariki, which breezes past your ears to the depths of your soul like a long awaited exhale.

This sound is a chance for people to relinquish themselves of the weight on their shoulders, really dive into the music and allow themselves to believe that some things can’t be explained in words.

Arahi recently played alongside iconic NZ artists, The Veils, Bic Runga, Nadia Reid, to a sold out audience at Auckland Stadium's Lilypad concert.

Arahi is looking forward to connecting and creating memorable live experiences with his fans in six different regions of Aotearoa this winter.

Friday August 19 - The Yard, Raglan

ocal artist Amanda Watson will be giving a slide presentation and talking about the paintings in her upcoming exhibition that have been made in places near Ruapuke, Te Mata, Wainui and other places in the area. She will share about her method of painting, her experiences and stories about being an artist. It will be a sneak preview of the work and her thought processes before the exhibition opens in September.

This Artist Talk is the first of a series of talks that will be given by different Whaingaroa artists on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. Through this initiative we hope to continue to build deeper connections among artists and people who enjoy the creative process.

The upcoming exhibition is called “Local Geographies” and opens at 4pm, 15th September 2022 at Ramp Gallery, 111 Collingwood Street, Kirikiriroa Hamilton. Entry is free and all are welcome to come and view the work that has direct links to our region. After the opening the exhibition continues until October 7th. Ramp Gallery is free to attend

Writing about her work has been published in art journals and she has presented at the Art Association of Australia and New Zealand’s ‘Impact’ conference. She was also the Artist in Residence at the Dunedin School of Art for two months last year, and she is about to begin a new project in Taranaki in October. In her Artist Talk she will chat about these things as well.

Small Gestures: Kath Grey - room #23

Did you know that Raglan had a doctor called “Digger”?

Elisabeth Denis wants to tell the stories of the residents at Raglan Rest Home and Hospital. Elisabeth wants to show up for someone every month and bring awareness to the community about caring for our elderly and appreciating their memories and wisdom.

P

oised on the threshold of room 23, I looked at her silently while she scrutinized attentively the lines of a magazine in the comfort of her red leather throne. I took a gentle step in and she pierced her gaze on the other side of her glasses and uncrossed her legs. Uncrossed her nested legs under her long silky green skirt, a garden of embroidered roses.

Kath's mother was a seamstress in Napier. From home, Kath watched her mother sketch, oscillate to pick materials and greet newcomers and familiar faces.

The fascination over her mother's work transformed into a necessary fervour when she was at primary school. Mum would say: why don't you go outside and have some fun? I'd say: No, I want to keep watching. From bobbins to pedal, from mother to daughter, they took turns on the pleasant carousel of garment making marathons, the only sewing machine in the household: a classic black and gold Singer. Kath recalls a piece her mother fabricated and overwore around the house like it was the only piece she owned: a cream-colored evening frock.

Tight at the waist and it flared out at the bottom. It was perfect for dancing and spinning fast until it depicted the shape of an umbrella.

Once Kath moved out of her mother's house, her and her husband Robert inaugurated a roof of their own in Whanganui. She was employed for three years at a sewing factory. Biker's leather jacket was the first item to be repeated. One day, her boss saw her making clothes for her own kids and he

asked if she could repeat the patterns for the company. She agreed and from that point on, she was consumed by stitching children's clothes. When the load of work became all too grueling, she walked out to pursue her own agenda and sturdily used her industrial Elna at her own pace in the amenity of her home.

Both her sons benefited from the hours spent imagining and delineating garments. Systematically, they had home clothes and nice clothes. The distinction between the two was to be respected. The nice clothes with fancy threading on them couldn't be put in the washing machine. The home clothes were often made of recycled fabrics and used mercilessly to play in soddened soils. A smile of satisfaction escaped her lips every time they walked out the door wearing outfits touched by her very own loving spirit.

Her eyes grew bigger when remembering the blue suit she made for her blond haired and blue-eyed husband. She diligently laboured on the suit while he was absent from home.

To hide it, a single sheet was wrapped over the pending ensemble. When his birthday came, the gift was unveiled.

Robert was so pleased, he insisted to go out in public that night to wear it with a dignified posture. He took her to the Royal Whanganui Opera House.

When the boys were kids, she once caught them secretly using her sewing machine in the kitchen. She smiled rejoicingly at the sight of the generational thread continuing to pass through the hands of her very own children.

I asked about the last remaining piece pushed through her personal Elna, she pointed to her lap: the silky garden of embroidered roses wrapped around her legs which she still wore with such elegance.

From the time he arrived, he endeared himself to all his patients and nothing was too much trouble for him. When asked to comment on his general practice, he said: “A specialist knows a lot about nothing; we know nothing about everything!”.

His patients’ unparalleled faith in not only the medicine, but also the man, is well illustrated in the following anecdote between a patient and Digger’s locum: Patient: Hey Doc-it’s me-ah-me bowels haven’t been going too good.

Locum: Well now, tell me when did your bowels last move?

Patient: Aw-dunno Doc-maybe 9 or 10 days ago. Hey, just a moment, that don’t sound like Dr Penman?

Locum: Sorry, I’m just the visiting doctor.

His sincere interest and devotion to all his Māori patients was so appreciated that the Penman family were accorded the rare distinction of being made members of the Tainui tribe.

At his packed funeral in 1980 , when Digger died at the age of 67, it was reported that: “The roaring seas at Raglan mingle with the tears of the Tainui people to say farewell” His remains were returned to his marae and his ashes were covered with a cloak and interred on the slopes of Karioi, overlooking the sea and the town he served so well.

Who do you coach?

I coach the Raglan 6th grade team along with Michael Thomson, Assistant Coach, and Fiona Wood as our Manager.

How is the team going this season?

We've had a successful season. We had a couple of losses which the boys took well and they've enjoyed some well-deserved wins. The boys have really come together as a team, they're working well together and making it fun for all.

What are the strengths of the team?

Each boy brings something unique to the table but overall the way they encourage

their teammates and the opposition as well as their enjoyment for the game has grown week to week.

They're determined and these little guys are tough! Their smiles as they sail down the field, side step a defender or get that try under the posts is priceless.

What's the goal for the season?

Our goal for the season is to ensure the boys have fun, develop skills and an understanding of rugby and end the season with a desire to have another go next year.

e are deep into the game, anyone that stood on the sidelines this weekend will be feeling the full force of the second half of the season.

The players have become team-players, helping each other through the highs and the lows, finding the spaces on the pitch,

and pushing each other through the end of play - even when the energy is low.

There was nailbiting play in the Seals vs Periwinkles game, where rumourhas-it the Seals took away a win for the first time this season. As a rule: beware the Periwinkles, they are fierce. We are seeing some incredible footwork in the older grade First Kicks, such as Cooper’s sideline back-kick, keeping the ball on the

pitch. I spotted Dylan in the younger grade getting air on the ball, and the youngest Girls team, Jellyfish, are heading fullthrottle up the pitch tackling anything that stands in their way. Pictured is Alba and Cooper dominating the ball in the second half of the Seals vs Periwinkles match.

Also, a huge welcome to the new puppy on the sidelines – this is Tiggy.

Clause 5 of Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act 1991 As required by central Government legislation, we’re proposing to make some changes to the Waikato District Plan that will enable more houses to be built in urban areas.

Where these changes apply, more intensive housing development will be permitted in some areas within our district (subject to standards being met). These changes are in line with the latest Government direction that has been given via the Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) Amendment Act (The Act) and the National Policy Statement - Urban Development (NPS-UD).

The proposed changes to our District Plan are required to comply with the legislation.

The changes set out by Government are not optional - we must change our plan to implement the new rules.
