ith a fresh new look and an inspiring exhibition on the horizon, the Raglan Arts Centre Gallery is calling for volunteers to help keep its doors open.

Recently renovated, the gallery is ready to re-establish itself as a vibrant hub for local creativity, with volunteers playing a key role in making that happen.

New volunteer arts coordinator Ruth Hickman-Goodall says the first exhibition, My Dream Is Hope, running from 18–27 April, sets an uplifting tone – showcasing the dreams and creativity of artists of all ages.

“This exhibition is about focusing on something hopeful and inspiring, celebrating community spirit, and our volunteers are at the heart of bringing it to life.”

“Volunteers are the backbone of our community,” she says. “You don’t need experience – just an appreciation of art and a willingness to support our local arts scene.”

urfing, adventure, fantasy, theology and romance will all be on the table at a triplewhammy book launch by Raglan authors later this month.

The special triple book launch will be held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Friday 24 April at 7pm, and everyone is welcome. With three new books by three authors to hear about, there’ll be something for all reading tastes!

Well-known local author Merren Tait will be launching her latest novel, Romance is Dead, at the event, the second title in her popular Britlandia Series. Inspired by the wartime correspondence of her grandparents, Merren’s novel is a romantic comedy about the lost art of crafting love letters and the power of the handwritten word.

Merren says, “The three of us are friends and writing colleagues, and we all happened to have new books coming out around the same time. Launching them together makes it three times the celebration, and really showcases the amount of fabulous new writing that is happening here in Whāingaroa. Writing can be a pretty solitary business, but there are loads of great authors living locally,

and it would be wonderful if more people knew about and could enjoy their books.”

Sarah Johnson will also be launching her latest book, Not A Babe, at the event; hot off the press earlier this month. Based in Raglan, Not A Babe is Sarah’s first novel for young adults, and is about friendship, facing up to a challenge and surfing.

Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay and Raglan Area School all feature in the story, along with many other local landmarks, and Sarah says she is thrilled to be launching the book just before Raglan takes centre stage as part of the World Surfing League Championship Tour next month.

Local singer-songwriter, artist and playwright Matt Kambic is the third string of the trio with his second novel, A Small Bite Out of Eternity ~ the Square Miracles.

Matt’s book is set in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In his story, a couple wanders into a local wooded park, finds a young apple tree in a hidden alcove, and each takes a bite of the fruit. As it happens, the tree is a direct descendant of the Garden of Eden’s apple tree. The narrative takes off from there, tracking disturbing metaphysical, transformative spiritual, and harrowing preternatural threads. Reflective, enchanting, gripping, with a dash of Shakespeareanesque jiggery-

pokery, it’s a book for those pondering the existence of God, and some such.

Merren, Sarah and Matt each already have several books to their name. They are also all founding members of the Raglan Inkspillers Writers’ Collective – a collective of eight Raglan authors that come together to support and promote their own and other Raglan writers’ work.

The collective produces the annual Backlit literary magazine, which is distributed free around town and last year showcased work by sixteen writers from the Whāingaroa rohe.

This year, Backlit is looking for a sponsor to help cover printing costs. If that sounds like something you may be interested in, come along to the launch and find out more.

Spirit of Adventure with Bella Alexander F

resh out of high school and already stepping well beyond her comfort zone, Bella Alexander recently took on the challenge of a 10-day voyage aboard the Spirit of Adventure - an experience that pushed her limits, built her confidence and left her with lifelong memories. The Chronicle caught up with Bella to hear all about it.

What stage of life are you at, Bella?

I have just finished high school and am taking a gap year. Currently, I’m working in hospo as a waitress at The Shack.

Tell us about why you decided to sign up for the Spirit of Adventure.

A couple of my friends had done it, and when I heard their stories - they sounded like they’d had such a blast - I knew it was something I wanted to do. I put off signing up for a while, as I'm not a big fan of heights and the thought of climbing to the top of the mast or jumping off the boat each morning sounded way out of my comfort zone. In the end though, it was this idea of facing my ‘fear of the unknown’ that I forced myself to apply.

How was the overall experience? Talk us through the itinerary and what was involved.

It was a 10-day voyage, starting from downtown Auckland, with our first night tucked in a bay at Waiheke Island. We learned the basics of sailing and got to know the ship before heading up to the Coromandel, out to Great Barrier Island, and back to Kawau Island.

We experienced everything from calm sunny days to howling winds and high seas.

With 40 trainees and 10 crew members, it took everyone to sail the ship. I quickly made

friends, and we worked as a team to face challenges together, which made stepping out of my comfort zone easier and left me with some amazing friendships.

Highlights included climbing to the top of the mast on a super windy day, sailing with dolphins, and just spending time with everyone on board. It was a mix of pushing myself, teamwork, and creating unforgettable memories.

On completion, how did you feel?

I felt a huge sense of accomplishment.

It felt surreal to think about everything we’d done. I was excited to share the stories with my family and friends and am proud of myself for jumping in the deep end - literally!

What did you gain from the experience that you didn’t expect?

Learning to navigate such a wide range of personalities in confined and challenging environments led me to be more adaptable and open-minded when working with others in a team.

How will it benefit you moving forward with your pathway?

Sailing on the Spirit really helped give me the confidence to go for opportunities that I might have otherwise hesitated on, because the results are so rewarding.

What’s next for you in 2026?

I’ve just secured a job at Cardrona ski field down in Wanaka, working as a barista and cafe assistant. I really appreciate all the hospitality skills the team at The Shack have taught me over the years, and I feel like going on the Spirit of Adventure at this time has set me up to become more independent. Only by pushing myself out of my comfort zone can I realise what I’m truly capable of in life.

Te Uku’s turn to give local community hall a makeover

nother local community hall has undergone something of a transformation – and this time it was Te Uku’s turn to celebrate.

With the paint scarcely dry on the Te Mata Hall restoration, just a 12 kilometre drive away the Te Uku community recently celebrated with an open day for a $40,000plus upgrade to its own memorial hall.

Coincidentally both historic buildings have been spruced up thanks in no small part to donations from the sale of the old Kauroa Saleyards, once a focal point for farming families in the district.

Te Uku Community Hall now boasts brand-new aluminium windows the length of its far-side wall, and a mouldfree ceiling whose clean-up required the erection of some pretty major scaffolding to access its lofty heights. This way the ceiling didn’t need an expensive paint job, hall committee chair Natalie Werner told the Chronicle.

With a colourful mural already brightening up the highway-facing side of the old building – courtesy of a recent Raglan Community Board grant – Natalie said there was now just some “tidying-up” of the gravelled outdoor area to be done.

This work would take in a clean-up of the defunct tennis court space.

While it was recognised early on that the cost of a new tennis court would be

prohibitive, Natalie said, “We’d still like to do something (there) that can be used by all the community”. At the same time the committee was mindful of not duplicating bike or skate facilities already available across the road at Te Uku School.

After the open day’s karakia and blessing by kaumatua Sean Ellison, longtime locals shared memories of their historic hall which has been a place for celebrations, meetings, sporting events, weddings, funerals and parties for 58 years.

Pastor Roger Peart, who grew up in the district, recalled the hall having been built after many community fundraising efforts including a scrap metal drive. “I can even remember the old hall,” he said.

That original structure, built in 1921 by early European settlers, became borerridden over the years and was eventually replaced in 1968 by the current building.

This was at least “built to last”, Roger recalled, with its concrete block exterior and steel girders.

The floor had to be “just right” for indoor bowls, level and flat, he explained, with the roof high enough for playing badminton. And the supper room had to open towards the tennis court which was a big part of life back then.

“It’s so good to see this old hall freshened up, being cared for and looked after,” he added. “A community centre to be proud of.”

He reminded those gathered at the open day of the hall’s dual purpose, featuring a rich history with its World War rolls of honour proudly on display inside, but the venue also serving as a focus for social events over the years.

Janet Peart remembered as a young person playing badminton at the hall on Saturday nights. “It was the place to be,” she said. “And my sisters and I had our wedding breakfasts here.”

Mary Parker remembered being welcomed to the district 65 years ago in the original hall. Te Uku has been a “fabulous” place to live, she insisted, with a wonderful community spirit. And her sons had their 21sts at the hall.

Hall committee secretary Natalie Parkes said the facility is used regularly with both table tennis and country dance nights weekly, and Nia dance on Saturday mornings. And hireage is up the past few years, she confirmed.

A Ceilidh or Scottish country dance event was held there, as of old, a couple of years ago, and the fifth annual community pot luck dinner is coming up in the newly refurbished building in July.

Natalie added that as custodians of the community-owned and operated asset, it’s good for the committee to continue to acknowledge the past while also ensuring this historic building remains fit for purpose for generations to come.

Manu Bay boardwalk and boat ramp to close for works ahead of WSL event council news

R

aglan’s Manu Bay boardwalk and boat ramp will be temporarily

closed in April while Waikato District Council carries out repair and renewal work ahead of the World Surf League event in May. The Manu Bay boardwalk will be closed to the public from 7 April while it is replaced, along with associated structures that have deteriorated due to age and environmental exposure. The work is expected to be completed by early May. The Manu Bay boat ramp will also be closed for five days, from 6am Monday 13

April to 5pm Friday 17 April, to allow for safety improvements. Work will include high-pressure cleaning and filling holes and voids in the ramp surface.

Emergency services access will be maintained at all times, and boaties will need to use alternative launch sites during the closure. The work is weather and tide dependent, with a contingency window scheduled from 27 April to 1 May if required.

The April works are intended to address immediate safety issues ahead of the World Surf League event, with more extensive renewal work on the boat ramp planned for after May.

Voices unite for Raglan food banks

usic lovers are in for an uplifting afternoon when the Hamilton Community Gospel Choir performs in Raglan next month.

The choir will sing at the Raglan Congregational Church on Stewart Street on Saturday, April 19 from 3pm to 5pm. Entry is by koha, with all donations going toward supporting Raglan food banks. No tickets are required.

Bringing together voices from across the Waikato, the Hamilton Community Gospel Choir is known for its joyful sound and strong sense of community. Each performance blends singers from a wide range of backgrounds into a powerful, uplifting musical experience.

t a recent meeting of the Raglan Art Project, members were discussing a new concept for exhibiting the considerable output of their works.

As always there were many ideas and suggestions but one seemed to engage the most attention when a member asked how much work, in the way of paintings, drawings and sketches, did the others have stacked under their bed, or in a cupboard or out in a shed, that hadn't seen the light of day for some time. Once people got home and started rummaging around, all sorts of treasures made an appearance.

Favourite paintings saved after having been shown at major exhibitions somewhere in New Zealand. Paintings large and small.

Acrylics, water colours, sketches, charcoal and oils. Even a complete portfolio from Art School days. So this variety is what will be displayed at the Under the Bed Exhibition

Just imagine what will happen with the space left under the bed or out in a shed while all those happy paintings glow on a new wall somewhere.

Humble scone going down a treat at rejigged café

S

he’s all but run off her feet these days at The Hut in Rangitahi and Mica Thomson knows why – it’s the cheese scones she bakes fresh each morning in the tiny cafe’s recently extended kitchen.

Scone flavours include cream cheese and sweet chilli, cheese, date and orange, jalapeño and sundried tomato, and spinach and feta, while Mica’s other creations are also on offer daily, including frittatas, sweet muffins and cookies.

But it’s the cheese scones that keep the customers coming back, she reckons. And not just from Raglan and Ruapuke, either; there’s a group of ladies from Auckland who insist Mica makes “the best scones in the country”.

There’s another from Australia who’s been back twice for more of the same.

Mica and her team – Louise, Harrison, Miko and Sofia – take the compliments in their stride.

“It’s beautiful to connect with the community in this way,” she says.

It’s not all coffee and scones, she insists, it’s also about the chat, knowing the regulars and asking after them – and maybe adding the odd touch like a glass of water for a breastfeeding mum or a free coffee for a customer’s birthday.

Mica’s always worked in hospitality – both in New Zealand and her native Argentina – but not until two years ago when she got the opportunity to manage The Hut did the bubbly 42 year old think to develop her baking skills.

The secret recipe? Love of course, she laughs. “I believe you can have all the ingredients but if it’s not done with love it won’t taste the same.”

She’s up at four every morning and bakes on site from five till seven, which is when

The Hut opens. There’s now a “proper” rather than bench top oven thanks to a re-jig six months ago when the shower box in the cafe’s attached bathroom got the shove in favour of more kitchen space.

Mica – who’s lived in Raglan for 12 years now, with a Kiwi hubby and kids in tow – hopes to go even bigger and better when Rangitahi’s new cafe gets built slightly further down the road later this year.

ore than 40 people attended guided tours of the Raglan Wastewater Treatment Plant in late March, taking the opportunity to see firsthand how the upgraded facility operates.

The modern process includes screening, biological treatment, membrane filtration, and UV disinfection - producing a higher standard of treated water prior to discharge.

Attendees heard how the upgraded plant has been designed to meet both current and future needs. It has capacity to treat more than twice Raglan’s current wastewater volume and is expected to support projected growth through to around 2050. Since commissioning in November, treated water has consistently met consented quality standards through regular monitoring.

“There’s strong interest in how wastewater is treated and what this upgrade means gives people a chance to see the process for themselves and ask questions directly,” Martin said.

The tours also provided an opportunity to discuss future planning for wastewater discharge. We're currently working to identify a preferred long-term solution, including Reserve. This option would enable a transition away from the existing ocean outfall over time, subject to the resource consent process.

Council staff were on site to answer questions and provide information, with strong interest from attendees in both how the plant operates and what’s planned for the future.

aikato District Council and Xtreme Zero Waste have recently signed a new waste services contract, enabling the great mahi and partnership developed over the past 25 plus years to continue.

Xtreme Zero Waste is a community enterprise that delivers weekly recycling and food scraps collection services under contract with council in Whaaingaroa Raglan.

The new contract allows Xtreme Zero Waste security of their operations for another 10 years. It also enables important health and safety improvements to be made to the design of the collection vehicles and trailers to make them safer for staff.

Xtreme Zero Waste will provide comprehensive waste services for the community; in addition to kerbside services, the contract covers rural recycling collection, servicing litter bins, loose litter pick up in town, roadsides and open spaces,

collecting illegal dumping, operating the Resource Recovery Centre, and disposal of residual waste to a responsible landfill.

Whaaingaroa Raglan waste services are funded through a mix of targeted rates and general rates, and the weekly prepaid bag rubbish collection service is fully user-pays.

Mayor Aksel Bech says the contract signing reflects council’s commitment to continue supporting the waste services solution that works for Raglan.

“As a council, our role is to enable and support initiatives that communities have built and believe in. Raglan has shown that local solutions shaped by the community often deliver the best outcomes.

“While waste minimisation remains a challenge for every district in New Zealand, partnerships like this help us move towards a more circular economy where resources are reused and valued rather than discarded.

Xtreme’s Waste Operations Manager, Nenya Chapman, is thrilled with the new contract for kerbside services and resource recovery centre management.

“The partnership with Waikato District Council and the Raglan community through Xtreme has produced wonderful results for waste minimisation, diversion and community resilience.”

Mayor Aksel says Xtreme Zero Waste has consistently diverted around more than three quarters of Raglan’s waste away from landfill, which is a remarkable achievement and one many communities look to as an example.

“The Raglan community has embedded a zero-waste mindset into everyday life. That kind of behaviour change comes from community leadership and shared values.”

In the past year, Xtreme Zero Waste diverted 14,285 cubic meters of waste from land fill – that's the equivalent of 476 truckloads.
