T was fitting in the lead-up to Easter that I joined energy industry leaders at a symposium in Wellington last week.

The Government’s current approach to place all its eggs in the ‘renewable only’ basket, when resources, technology and infrastructure aren’t available and won’t be for years, was the focus for many there.

In short, it’s just not doable, in the timeframes they want.

Experts told us there needs to be a diverse, portfolio approach to satisfy the country’s energy needs. That we need to be “architects” and design a “robust strategy with consistent core policy”. And we need better data to use New Zealand’s resources in a sustainable way.

Most importantly they say, is the lack of a firm direction. Difficult decisions need to be made because the cracks are appearing, while investors in the sector, are disappearing.

For example: • the Government will not reach its 2025 emissions free government fleet target. There aren’t enough pure electric vehicles in the country for a start and won’t be for years. Instead, its agencies will have to pay to offset their emissions.

• On election night last year the Prime Minister said NZ electricity will be 100% renewable by 2030.

So millions are being spent to investigate a potential $4 billion hydro scheme in Central Otago at Lake Onslow. Experts say it’s

expensive for what it will produce, probably take 10 years to build and five years to fill, provided it rains.

As it’s already 2021, it won’t meet the 2030 deadline, even if work started tomorrow.

When a former Electricity Authority chair says the Onslow project puts “too many eggs in a badly located basket” and is a “folly”, alongside another expert who calls it a 20th Century solution to a 21st Century problem, surely the Energy and Resources Minister and her government need to listen.

Meanwhile automotive experts say the Climate Change Commission’s proposed ban on importing new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, ignores the reality that pure EVs will be in short supply for years. There aren’t enough worldwide, new or used, and it could be decades before the average Kiwi can afford one.

This government needs to be more than the party of grand announcements, spending millions in the process, only to find these lofty goals won’t come off.

Transformation takes a sound plan, built around expert advice and include options across the board, renewable and non-renewable (in the short term).

I’m working towards enduring energy solutions, so no matter who is in government every three years, the lights stay on Barbra Kuriger .

One-man improv show at the Old School Arts Centre

A

ustralian improv champion Jim Fishwick has adopted Aotearoa as his new home. Since arriving during Level 4 Lockdown last year, he has been hidden away in Kirkiriroa Hamilton, tinkering and experimenting with his latest one-man show, which is coming to Raglan after debuting at the Wellington Fringe earlier this year.

Billed as an interactive storytelling show, Fishwick will collate the audience’s real-life experiences of the things they did that day into a lightning-fast, one-time-only museum exhibition. The show has been tested around

the country, including in Hamilton, in Christchurch and in Wellington, where a preview won the audience vote at improv competition Late Night Knife Fight.

‘I’m endlessly fascinated by the small details of people’s lives,’ says Fishwick, ‘and I’m excited to draw equally on my museum and improvisation skills to honour the everyday beauty and truth of what I find.’

Fishwick is no stranger to making things up on the spot. At age 11, he attended a Theatresports show and instantly fell in love with the art form. He went to show

after show and started participating at the age of 15. By the time he was 17, Fishwick was performing in bars, honing his skills in spontaneous comedy.

He taught and directed an improv program at the University of Sydney for several years and won the Australian National Improvisation Championship in 2017. His role as curator of Museum of This Morning is partly inspired by his real-life job as a museum curator, most recently at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

After a year spent living apart, he and his Kiwi wife are thankful to be reunited in New Zealand.

‘I am immensely grateful to be in Aotearoa, and have loved my time in Hamilton. I can’t wait to hear people’s stories in this interactive format,’ says Fishwick.

In his spare time, Fishwick is developing several other new interactive, improvised and immersive theatre shows, which he plans to bring to life later this year.

he 7th Hamilton Zinefest takes place on May 8 at the Meteor Theatre.

Hamilton Zinefest’s main event is its market day, with attendant talks and screenings (10am3pm). This’ll be the third Zinefest at the Meteor Theatre since the event outgrew the Creative Waikato HQ in Alexandra Street.

Dozens of poets, comics creators, fringe politicos, collagists, illustrators, writers and artists will bring their wares to the Meteor for swapping or selling. At the pricier end of the market, some things might cost $10-$20, but it’s still possible to arrive at zinefest with $5 in loose change and walk away with several well-turned papery gems.

Young Achievers: Runner on the fast track T he Chronicle caught up with RAS student Harper Peart who has recently had huge success in Athletics. New to entering the regional competitions, Harper was placed first in the 100m sprint at the Waikato- BOP champs (in bare feet) and then went on to be placed at the North Island champs. We wish Harper all the best for the Nationals competition in December.

What was your recent achievement at the North Island Athletics Champs ?

I represented RaglanArea School as part of the Waikato BOP team in the North Island Secondary SchoolAthletics champs. I came second in the under-14 boys 100 metre, third in the under-14 boys 200 metre, and our Waikato BOP 4x100m relay team came first and came within

a school level but until this year I have never taken it any further.

What do you enjoy about it?

I really enjoy the competitiveness of the events because it really feels like you're putting everything out there against everyone else. It’s also pretty awesome getting to meet and make friends from all around the country.

Are there any downsides?

Since I don’t really do much training yet, I get pretty sore after racing. My plan is to train through winter, so I guess that will be a bit hard.

Have you been involved with a club?

How much training is involved?

When did you start taking an interest in athletics?

No, I haven’t been involved with any clubs. But now that I’ve done quite well, I’ll get a bit of training over winter and join a club when the season starts next summer.

I’ve enjoyed running in races as long as I can remember. I used to race in surf club beach sprints, which was probably the start of taking an interest. I have always competed at

What is your goal with Athletics moving into the future?

My goal with athletics is to put in a lot more training and to refine my skills so I can avoid injury. If I put in the training I’d like to think I could do even better in the nationals in December.

T

he Raglan Arts Weekend artist registration opened last week - and closed soon after - with 42 artists signing up in a matter of days.

The Raglan Community Arts Council, responsible for putting on the highly anticipated event, has managed to increase the number of participants by six this year but that’s now at capacity from a cost perspective.

Eleven new artists join the group this year, as well as 31 from last October’s successful RAW weekend and the trail promises to pack the usual punch of creativity and superior artwork.

“RAW is slowly starting to establish itself as a cut above your usual art trail and the senior talent that resides in our little community is mind-blowing,” says RAW Co-ordinator Nicky Brzeska. “The energy around the event is palpable, and we’ve had a lot of emerging artists express interest as well as companies wanting to collaborate.”

Nicky goes on to say that it was very sad having to close registrations knowing that even more artists wanted to sign up. “Our 42 artist cap is largely determined by costs; with each artist that is added, there are associated brochure, web and admin costs, and the team has worked carefully to see what is feasible within our budget constraints,” she says.

Registration is based on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis with the current RAW artist group receiving a small heads up as a thank you for their loyalty. “This keeps things fair for everyone to enter,” Nicky explains.

From 7 April, copies of the Long Term Plan 2021-31 consultation document will be available to view online and soon after in our offices and libraries.
