Mixed reviews for Bluegreens’ foray into unfamiliar territory

ig-name politicians rarely sighted in the political wilderness of Raglan were among those to learn first-hand about Whaingaroa’s landmark environmental initiatives when the National Party ginger group the Bluegreens held their annual forum here recently.

But while the talkfest applauded Raglan’s efforts and even went on to earn National some brownie points from an unlikely quarter – Greenpeace – it didn’t particularly impress Raglan’s best known environmental activist, who says he found some aspects of the weekend bizarre and ingenuine.

Phil McCabe – who was the face of KASM in its fight against seabed mining – sat in on the Saturday’s proceedings and described ward councillor Lisa Thomson’s welcoming address as “wonderful in

expressing Raglan’s deep connection with the environment and the work we’ve done over the years”.

But he felt that Nats leader Simon Bridges’ declaration of caring for the environment and the fact he “wants his grandchildren to be proud of that commitment” quite bizarre considering his support for projects destructive to the ecology when he was energy minister.

As chair of KASM when it repeatedly fought National-supported applications to mine the seabed, Phil reckoned the Bluegreens’ general approach was lacking in real meaning.

He conceded the Bluegreens had a few good ideas and put forward some positive initiatives – such as a proposed countrywide bottle deposit scheme to address plastic pollution – but believed they revealed a huge blind spot when it came to the impacts of dairy farming, climate change and the degradation of rivers and waterways.

National was looking for fictional future tech fixes for agricultural problems rather than acting now.

Phil was one of a handful of locals who attended the Bluegreens forum, which attracted 130-odd party faithful from all over the country.

While he went along partly to see what exactly the 21-year-old “special interest group” was all about, Xtreme Zero Waste co-founder Rick Thorpe was also there to give a presentation and contribute to a panel discussion in the town hall on the Saturday.

A field trip covering local zero waste sites and facilities followed on the Sunday morning.

Lisa Thomson told the Chronicle it was good to have the Bluegreens meet in our community, a move which was pushed for largely by local MP Barbara Kuriger with the backing of Raglan Chamber of Commerce.

And it was “pretty amazing”, Lisa said, for Raglan to host top politicians like Simon Bridges, Maggie Barry, Nick Smith, even current Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Greenpeace senior campaign adviser Steve Abel also attended the forum.

Lisa admitted she took the opportunity to “skite a bit about Raglan” in her opening address.

She stressed locals were pro-active and passionate about the environment, leading the way nationwide with a number of community initiatives from KASM and Xtreme Zero Waste to Whaingaroa Harbour Care and Plastic Bag Free Raglan.

And she pointed out that in addition to being named the most beautiful small town last year, Raglan also received the highest accolade – the supreme award – in the annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards.

Lisa then told the true story of a local five year old – encouraged to pick up rubbish on the beach – getting upset one day when a plastic bag he was chasing blew away, ending up in the sea.

Visibly distraught, the child asked his mother why nobody around had run and helped.

Lisa asked the forum: “Will we step aside and simply watch the five year old?

Or will we run as fast as we can for a better future?”

Having worked in the industry for so many years, I've been lucky enough to go to a lot of places, specifically to inspect destinations and hotels.

So often people may see something amazing online... that isn't actually that amazing in reality! So I can really advise on what I think would suit each particular person/ family and really work with someones budget to get the perfect flight/hotel/tour etc.

Also I'm just on the end of the phone or email if you have any issues while you're away, instead of sitting on hold to an 0800 number for hours!

What recent trends have you seen in the industry? The Philippines are becoming a lot more popular - especially people that have been to i.e. Thailand and Vietnam that want something different.It's actually very affordable too.

Can you share a funny travel story?

After our last trip away, our plane couldn't land in Auckland due to fog, so we were diverted to Wellington and had to sit on the tarmac for two hours.....being stuck on a plane with two tired and hungry kids was pretty full on. It wasn't funny at the time, but I can laugh about it now!

Best advice you can give to travellers?

Make sure you have some insurance, you just never know what might happen when you're away.

his week we spoke to Andy Singh who is the store manager at

Raglan Four Square Supermarket.

How long have you been store manger at Four Square?

I joined the team at Four Square Raglan in April 2017 and moved to Raglan at the same time. In May 2018 I was promoted to store manger.

What is your background before working in Raglan?

I was born and raised in India. In 2012 I immigrated to New Zealand. I stayed five years in Tauranga while studying. During my stay in Tauranga, I worked for Frucor Beverages Ltd. and Coca-Cola Amatil as a merchandiser.

What’s great about your role at Four Square?

Every day is different. I get to meet people from all parts of the world who are visiting Raglan.

We also have such a great close knit local community here in Raglan and being able to chat to our regular customers and be a part of their day makes work not seem like work for me!

What do you aim to achieve in that role?

As a store manager, I have a lot of responsibilities. I am focussed on successfully running the operations in the different departments at Raglan Four Square. I want to continue learning as much as I can on the floor and behind the scenes of the store and gain enough knowledge of the industry that I too can one day own my own supermarket.

What can we expect from Foursquare in 2019?

Heading into winter we have a lot of in-store promotions lined up, one of which will be particularly exciting so watch this space. We also have plans to keep increasing our product range and add in a new bakery section.

aglan Area School environmentalist Sequoia McCabe wants people to “come with a sign or a mind for change” when she and fellow students congregate downtown around noon on Friday week demanding Government action on global warming and climate change.

Inspired by schoolgirl Greta Thunberg, who staged an action outside the Swedish Riksdag (parliament) in August last year, the Raglan 17 year old has organised with friends Nikau Hansen and Kai Woolf for students to march from the school’s top field along Norrie Ave into town where there will be a couple of speeches.

“We are appealing for the New Zealand Government to move away from fossil fuels and go 100 percent renewable energy,” Sequoia told the Chronicle.

It’s a nationwide thing – in fact a global movement – with “loads of schools” staging their own School Strike 4 Climate, she added.

The demonstrations are also known as Fridays for Future, Youth for Climate or Youth Strike 4 Climate.

In the Mens' section, 12 players entered. This section was played with the ‘two wins to qualify’ system with post section played on Sunday to find the eventual winners. These were Colin Bouzaid and Denis Pizer from Ross Turner and Tim Ryan.

Most of these games were excitingly close.

The score for the final game was 15-all going into the last end with Colin’s team scoring one point to take out the title of Pairs Champions.
