Bernadette Gavin will be launching her new book, By the Light of the Moon next Friday.

I

t’s taken three rewrites and a brutal edit to get her memoir published but Bernadette Gavin is looking forward to at last sharing with readers a story of self-discovery she began working on almost two decades ago.

“It feels quite surreal,” she told the Chronicle last Saturday as she held a copy of ‘By the Light of the Moon’ in her hands, a few days after a pile of the long-awaited books arrived at her beachfront home from the printers.

“Now I can move on,” she added with obvious relief.

The 360-page memoir tells the story of an epic four-year sailing adventure in which she joined a solo sailor on his quest to circumnavigate the globe back in the late 90s.

The rewriting process required a lot of soul-searching, Bernadette says. But this third generation Raglan mother, yoga teacher, therapist and activist also found it “an incredibly healing process” which has finally brought her to an understanding that she can now be “unabashedly me”.

Bernadette put her first draft away for years, not really knowing what to do with it, then worked with a counsellor cum writer/editor through a long process of selfdiscovery before she could pick up where she’d left off.

She learnt to write about “who I am and what I’m feeling” only after having it pointed out that she was missing from the story. “I had shut down (the personal).”

The end result is, as the synopsis says, a true story of a young woman’s rite of passage into love and self-realisation in which Bernadette “begins piecing together fallen aspects of herself, not only belonging to the young woman lost at sea years ago but also of the wounded child”.

An unforeseen discovery then clarifies her vision.

Bernadette’s looking forward to having her teenage daughter Sequoia read about the journey that shaped her mother’s life.

Her partner Phil’s not seen the final version either, she reveals, but “I’m at a point where I feel comfortable within myself and unafraid to share my story”.

Electric vehicle tour to visit Raglan

A

n annual nationwide electric vehicle information road show will be visiting Raglan for the first time ever on April 22 (Easter Monday), giving locals the opportunity to get independent advice about every aspect of electric vehicle (EV) usage and ownership.

The #LeadingTheCharge Great EV Road Trip is run by the Better NZ Trust, supported by the Energy and Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA). Better NZ is a charitable trust whose mandate is to create environmental, financial and health benefits for all New Zealanders through education, and by assisting in the

adoption of zero carbon renewable energy technologies.

At present the Trust is focusing on actively supporting the growth of a vibrant EV community in New Zealand and the Road Trip is the biggest event on the Trust’s calendar.

Better NZ Trust Chairperson Kathryn Trounson says The Great EV Road Trip has become a popular annual fixture for electric vehicle owners and enthusiasts nationwide and – importantly – for people who don’t own an EV but would like to know more.

“It is a fun and easy way for people to find out everything they ever wanted to know about electric vehicles and to get a chance to drive or ride in a variety of electric vehicles for free.

“We love it when people experience an electric vehicle for the first time because their response is typically ‘wow, that’s amazingly quiet and smooth’,” she says.

Mrs Trounson says the Great EV Road Trip will be visiting large and small centres nationwide and has extended its reach into a number of previously unvisited smaller towns this year because greatly improved battery storage technologies, coupled with an ever-expanding nationwide charging network, means that electric vehicles can now go anywhere in New Zealand.

Solscape duo bow out with feast of memories I t was the end of an era for Solscape couple Phil McCabe and Bernadette Gavin last Monday when they finally handed over the eco retreat they’ve nurtured for almost 17 years to its new owners.

Both activists are now looking forward to “a bit of a break” before Phil – former chair of KASM – sails to Fiji to look at seabed mining in the Pacific, and Bernadette follows up African connections to continue her work in animal rehabilitation.

The pair marked the occasion a week ago by hosting 100-odd friends and family at their cafe overlooking the Tasman Sea while reliving Solscape’s evolution through a slideshow of cabooses, tipis and earth domes, burgeoning gardens and woofers who’ve come and gone.

It was part family album-part Solscape history, Phil said, because the two had been inextricably linked over the years.

Bernadette’s brother, Dom Gavin, has been at Solscape in a managerial role in latter years. He is staying on, as is Phil’s daughter Molly.

The couple’s teenage daughter Sequoia – now in her last year at the area school – celebrated her first birthday there.

Also at the event were former owners Peter and Miriam Dixon – now breeding alpacas on the outskirts of Dinsdale – who were responsible for setting up on site some old train carriages, most of which are still in use today.

Peter reckoned everyone thought he was crazy dragging railcars through town in the early 90s to set up Raglan Wagon Cabins, as

the venture was called then, but said he was amazed to find Phil and Bernadette to carry his vision forward.

Solscape is now in the hands of another family who have “lots of connections” to

Raglan and intend to work in the same vein, Phil told the Chronicle.

lthough everyone requires rain we certainly did

not need it to happen on Thursday 28 for our Annual

Western 1000 Optional Fours tournament. Overnight rain gave us some concern but the weather gods were good to us

as it cleared away leaving us with a reasonable day.

Teams gathering out west came from Arapuni, Cambridge, Cambridge

Central, Piopio, Te Kuiti, Otorohanga, Te Awamutu, Putaruru, Taupiri, Huntly, Frankton Junction, Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club, Hillcrest, Beerescourt, Tui Park in Te Aroha, and five local Raglan teams.

We are very thankful to our wonderful sponsors, Seddon Park Funeral Home, Raglan SuperValue, Chris Leuthart of PGG Wrightsons and Bill Bond and Jack Peel Four games of one hour and ten minutes were played in an ambient atmosphere to decide who was going to take home the top prize of $600.00.

The winner was decided by who had the most wins and then who had scored the most points, but if everything was still equal then it was the lowest points against to work out the place getters.

Outright winners with four straight wins were Mark Nicol’s team from Putaruru. Second place became a bit tricky, as there were nine teams with three wins each. The ‘highest points for’ quotant had to be used to sort them out. Murray Long’s team from Frankton Junction Club, manged to whip through with 45 points with 23 points against, giving them third place. Alister McLachlan’s team from Frankton Junction came in 4th place with 44 points for and 27 points against.

Gavin Stringer’s team, also from Frankton Junction, scored 44 points also but dipped out because they had higher points against 30.

by Bill Bond and Jack Peel, were Darryl Hawkins, Heather Dalbeth, Gordon Mills and Maws Wahanga.

Saturday, March 30, saw us play our Handicap Singles, sponsored

by Whaingaroa Physiotherapy. Not everyone likes to play singles so the entries were down to 10 players.

Handicaps are worked out on the ability of each player, what events they have won and years of experience. A new player starts off on a 12 handicap whereas a more experienced player would be on a lesser amount, some with a nil handicap. Challenges were rather exciting as most games were close, although a couple of games weren’t so close, the handicaps were pretty accurate of each players ability.

The Women’s winner was Maws Wahanga with Pim Blair as runner up.

In the Men’s section Bob Carter came through as the winner with 3 wins and 75 points, with Denis Pizer as runner up with three wins and 66 points. Well Done and congratulations to you all.

aglan’s Traditional Shotokan Karatedo Federation dojo came home with two medals from the 2019 Australasian Championships and training seminar held last week in Taupo.

Teiani Ralaimihoatra, 12, took out gold in the kumite (sparring) and Shylah Williams, 12, picked up a silver in the kata (movement sequences).

Led by sensei (teacher) and competition judge Maureen Stockman, the team – Teiani, Shylah, Heiana Ralaimihoatra, 11, Kayla Stockman-Bond, 12, Crystal Goodwin-Metz, 12 and Laurent Torlois – were competing against larger dojos from across New Zealand and Australia.

“It’s a great result for our little dojo. The hard work and dedication by the team has paid off,” Maureen says.

Before the competition, the 200 competitors also take part in an intense training regime with top Japanese, New Zealand and Australian sensei.

“Namoto and Hirata, both sensei at Ayoama University, Tokyo were our esteemed guests and they spent a lot of time working with the younger dojo members.”

Maureen says the main goal for the Raglan group was to complete the gruelling training which consisted of two-hour sessions twice a day for three days and coming home with the medals was the icing on the cake.

“The training was intense and it was a massive goal to complete. You pretty much sweat the whole time.”

With nearly 40 years karate training under her belt, the second-degree black belt started the TSKF dojo in Raglan three years ago, which is also affiliated to the International Shotokan Karate-do Federation.

She says attending regular seminars is an important part of her training and the Raglan team are lucky to have opportunities to learn from highranking sensei from around the world.

TSKF was formed over 40-years ago by ninth dan Takahashi Shunsuke Shihan of Japan and the eight New Zealand dojos are guided by chief instructor Mark Willis Shihan, eighth dan.

Maureen says the consistent practice of karate is a holistic vehicle to health and wellbeing, and Shotokan karate is suitable for all people, age, gender or fitness level are not a hindrance - eight years old is a good age to start children.

Council approves annual budget

W

aikato Regional Council is sticking to its 2018-2028 Long Term Plan with the approval of the draft 2019/20 Annual Plan budget.

The council today approved a draft budget of $101.355 million with a proposed increase in rates revenue from current ratepayers of 7.8 per cent, both slightly below that proposed in the 2018-28 Long Term Plan.

Chair Alan Livingston says the regional council is sticking to its plan, and as a result there are minimal changes to the works programme for 2019/20.

“There are just a few minor tweaks,” said Mr Livingston. “Therefore, we will not be consulting on the Annual Plan and it is proposed that it will be adopted in June 2019.”

The increase in the general rate, uniform annual general charge (UAGC) and uniform region wide rates is 4.5 per cent, while the increase in targeted rates is 11.8 per cent. Within the targeted rates, the main increases are in biosecurity, public transport (Hamilton City only) and catchment work.

s from October 2018 the new animal welfare code states that the owner of, and every person in charge of a goat, that is tethered must ensure that at all times the said goat has access to food, water and shelter. Shelter should be fully shaded, dry and provides protection from extremes of heat and cold. Anyone not providing this is liable to face fines under that welfare act.

Unfortunately this does not still address the problem of habitual tethering which can enable neglect such as incorrect dietary needs which can lead to health issues, constant exposure to roadside fumes and noise, higher risk of dog attacks, and entanglement causing serious injuries, just to name a few!

Despite this, we still continue to see goats tethered on roadsides putting them into these unsafe situations, not to mention this also goes against their natural behaviour.

Contrary to popular belief, Goats are browsers, NOT grazers; therefore it is completely unnatural for them to be forced to eat grass right down low, and to not be provided with accessibility of a varied diet. They need a diet which includes various

types of grasses, hay, leaves, branches, fruit and a supplement of pellets if they are fed on an inadequately complete diet.

Goats receive lots of moisture from the food they eat but it is a misconception that they do not require constant access to water. This is especially relevant when they are tethered as they don’t have the ability to find water for them selves.

Another serious problem is overgrown hooves. Because their freedom to roam is taken away from them their hooves do not wear the same so they need regular hoof checks and maintenance. This can be easily done, however it is important to know what you are doing before trying this yourself.

Goats also need regular drenching for internal and external parasites, and the drenches available for goats are quite specific so best to discuss this with a veterinarian.

Horns must also not be forgotten.

They need to be checked and not allowed to become over grown, as they can curl around and may result in injury.

Goats are very social animals and do best when in a herd situation, as they need this interaction with others for good health and well being.

For biosecurity, more funding is being put into pest control, including management of possums, wallabies and kauri dieback.

The regional council is collecting rates from Hamilton City ratepayers for the Hamilton-Auckland passenger rail service, which is expected to start in March 2020. We will also start collecting a region-wide rate that will fund a $5 million contribution towards building a new regional theatre in Hamilton.

Spreading the cost of catchment rate increases for Lower Waikato and Waihou-Piako over three years was locked in as part of the Long Term Plan, so these areas will again see rate increases this year. The rates in these catchments have also gone up in response to a sought increased level of work in flood protection.

Ratepayers will be able to use the council’s online rates enquiry tool to see what the proposed increases will be for their property. Look out for it on the council’s website in April.

The 2019/20 Annual Plan takes effect from 1 July 2019.

New Zealander of the Year, Mike King and I AM HOPE are asking New Zealanders to wear their gumboots to work or school on Gumboot Friday (5 April) for a gold coin donation. It's a positive and fun way for kiwis to join in the mental health conversation, while raising money to provide free and timely counselling for any kid in need.

For many, having depression or anxiety can feel like walking through mud every day. By wearing gumboots and spending a day walking in someone else’s shoes, New Zealanders can “show people who are struggling that they’re not alone, and that it’s important and normal to talk about the things that they’re dealing with internally,” King says.

“Now more than ever, we need kiwis to reach out to friends and whānau. On Gumboot Friday, we want kiwis to have lots of fun and

take the opportunity to ask those you’re closest to if they’re ok.”

King announced Gumboot Friday when he was named Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year 2019. Since then, King and I AM HOPE have been overwhelmed with the positive response from around Aotearoa. Schools, businesses, sports clubs and individuals around the country have started their own Gumboot Friday events and opened the conversation around mental wellbeing in their communities.

“The amazing messages of support we’ve received from New Zealanders shows how much we all care, and that kiwis want to do more to help each other when our friends and whānau are going through rough times.”

Gumboot Friday aims to raise $2million to fund counselling for school aged kids. King says that initially this felt like a lofty goal but based on the level of support he’s received from around New Zealand, he’s confident the target will be met.
