Kia ora Whaingaroa This past week has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the team at the Chronicle.

Last Friday the Government announced that non-daily media, including community newspapers, were not classified as 'essential services' during the Covid-19 lockdown and asked these publications to stop printing.

We believe that community newspapers serve a vital role in providing local information, especially for those that don't have access to technology. It is important now, more than ever, to have clear, localised information available to those in rural, remote or otherwise vulnerable communities.

Because we service rural and remote areas, we are thankful that the Government on Tuesday 31st March reclassified publications that serve these communities to be able to print.

In order for us to continue printing the Raglan Chronicle, we have to make some changes to the way it is delivered.

Lockdown a time to appreciate family and Whaingaroa – police

Senior Constable Raewyn Stevenson says locals “by and large did a great job” responding to the lockdown.

mbrace the coronavirus lockdown – look at it as an opportunity to enjoy your family and your neighbourhood during these next few weeks.

That was the message from Raglan Police on Monday after a weekend in which they say locals “by and large did a great job” complying with the country’s lockdown requirements.

Senior Constable Raewyn Stevenson told the Chronicle she saw lots of people out and about both walking and biking, enjoying the last of summer with a safe two-metre distance between their respective “bubbles”. And car traffic was noticeably down.

“I hope families embrace this lockdown for the opportunity it is,” she added. It was a time for local families to appreciate each other in their home patch.

“Let’s look at things in a positive light and follow the rules.”

Local police were still doing drivearounds, she said, patrolling the township and the beaches.

But with fewer callouts in an uncharacteristically empty Raglan – all but shut down last week as alert level four kicked in – the focus now for local police was on educating people in the everchanging climate that was Covid-19, and encouraging compliance for their own and everyone’s safety.

Senior Constable Stevenson was appalled to come across two cases last Sunday of people having driven out from Hamilton – a group picnicking at Papahua Domain and one male surfing at Manu Bay. “They were educated (about the right thing to do) and requested to leave which they eventually did.”

The overall message was simple, she said – to “stay home and stay local”, apart

Raglan artist finds new role in Covid-19 lockdown

I

t's funny how a crisis can sometimes change what you do so completely.

Two weeks ago, Raglan artist Matt Meenagh was getting busy with paint for Raglan Arts Weekend and now he’s helping Raglan Medical control who and how many people enter its doors.

Wife Michelle is the Raglan Medical practice manager and this new role is pretty much a fulltime job and one the former oil rigger is happy to do.

“As you can imagine our health professionals’ well-being is very important at the moment. I was asked if I would be available for emergency work offshore in Taranaki, however I turned this down as I felt assisting our community and staying close to my family was far more important than money at this stage,” he says.

This would have been Matt’s first Arts Weekend; he was talked into exhibiting in the popular Easter Weekend arts trail by artist friends Geraldine Burns and Megan Hockley.

“I think RAW being cancelled would have been very disappointing for the organisers as they had put so much into the event, however from my perspective it just allows more time for me to produce more work for the event.”

He also thinks the event will be bigger and better once things get back to normal and the organisers can set a new date.

“When things return to normal RAW will provide a great destination for people who will be looking to get out and about after a long haul being stuck in their respective houses and towns. It could also provide some much needed cashflow to our community’s businesses.”

Matt’s a man of many talents but art has remained his constant throughout his life; something he’s always dabbled in and with some success.

Having spent many years traveling to short-term contracts overseas, Matt come back home permanently to take a load off Michelle who was busy coordinating the move for the medical centre to new premises.

He’s loving spending time with the kids, preparing dinners, finishing off home improvements, studying Architecture Technology through the Open Polytech and, of course, putting brush to canvas.

Art is emotional for Matt, his inspiration comes through what he feels and experiences; there’s the surf (he’s a longtime surfer), nature (he loves flowers), there’s Raglan and there’s the joy in life.

“I love this place, it’s one of those places that has always been a creative inspiration for me.”

He describes his style as retro psychedelic and his paintings have a real 70s vibe with bright, bold colours, repeating patterns and a touch of humour; look closely and you’ll spot the skulls amidst the flowers.

Matt knows that his emotional state affects his art, looking back on his School Certificate art you get a sense of a dark foreboding and that’s exactly how he felt at that time.

“I had a pretty tumultuous childhood, there were mental health issues in my family and my mother passed away when I was young,” he says.

Chucking away metal work and woodwork, Matt only took up art a third of the way though the School C year at Te Awamutu College.

His first job leaving school was in demolition, but a serious workplace accident that almost left him paralysed turned Matt towards a signwriting apprenticeship, which he did for five years before heading overseas.

It was here that he first started on the oil rigs in the North Sea working his way up from low-skilled work to operating the drills and then pipe inspection work.

Throughout this time Matt was always sketching – clothing designs, drawings, logo designs and cartoons – it was his creative outlet from the high-pressure rigging work.

His cartoons were a regular feature in Irish extreme sport magazine Freeflow, following the exploits of a combi van and the humans that crossed its path.

He met Michelle in Ireland and the pair moved to New Zealand and settled in Raglan.

Having grown up in Kihikihi, the territory was familiar and he had grown to love surfing when he worked as a signwriter in Hamilton.

Matt was travelling to the Western Australian oil rigs by this stage and the pair were owner/operators in the Aqua Velvet a café/live music venue (now West Coast Tacos).

He says the work in hospitality was some of the hardest graft he has ever done and after four years they decided to give it up in order to spend more time with the family, with Matt still continuing working away on the oil rigs in Oz. Giving up the oil rig work last year has given Matt more time to focus on and enjoy family, and he says the lockdown really brings home the importance of family.

“My son and I are fixing my old V8 at the moment, and my wife and daughter are mucking about in our garden. I think the key is to just try and stay as busy as you can and be sure to keep in touch with family and friends.”

He’s also trying to get out on the bikes with the kids a couple of times a day and just spending some quality time with them.

“If you have kids try not to tie them up and gag them,” he laughs.

Flying back to the safety of home after the lockdown I t was eerie,” is how Raglan woman Margaret Huxtable described her drive back from Auckland Airport last Thursday night.

The 70-year-old had been in Australia for a family wedding since March 11 and was due to fly back last Saturday.

Sitting tight in Australia and waiting to hear from Air NZ of any changes to her flight, Margaret was keeping up-to date with the news from New Zealand but life in Australia seemed mostly unchanged.

“It’s was so different over there (Gold Coast). Everyone still had to go to work and there were some cafes open serving takeaway food. People were still driving around.”

Even when the lockdown was imminent, Margaret says there was still confusion about how people returning from overseas were to get to their homes to self-isolate.

“I spoke to one lady on my flight whose connecting flight to Nelson was cancelled.

She didn’t realise that she could get picked up from the airport and self-isolate with the driver or drive her own car home.” Margaret says the woman was facing quarantine in an Auckland hotel for two weeks.

One of Margaret’s granddaughters had driven her car and another granddaughter had followed in another car to the airport on Wednesday, leaving the keys in a safe place.

This meant Margaret could drive back on her own to Raglan to self-isolate.

She said the flight back was only around a third full and they were given free meals and free movies. On arrival they were escorted by police off the plane 10 at a time to a health checking area, where they had their temperatures taken and were asked various questions about their health and how they were getting home.

Once she found her car, Margaret said the relief was immense, so much so she drove off without her bags and realised once she had left the carpark. Luckily, she was able to park her car nearby and go back for her bags.

Although Margaret could have stayed in Australia with her son, she was worried it could have been months before she made it back to New Zeeland.

“I’m feeling very relieved to be home and so thankful I live in Raglan where the supermarkets are offering home delivery.”

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Health Services at Waikato DHB Tēnā koutou, thank you for your support and understanding as we work together to ensure our Waikato health services are prepared and supported during this pandemic event.

Health facilities are essential services and will be open throughout the national lockdown. This includes our hospitals, emergency departments (ED), delivery suites, GPs and Pharmacies.

CLINIC APPOINTMENTS AND PLANNED SURGERY

Acute and trauma procedures will continue to be delivered as well as time critical procedures.

If you had a surgery date or a clinic appointment that was postponed you will have been contacted to inform you of this.

If you haven’t been contacted and you are unclear about your appointment contact the booking clerk phone number on your appointment letter.

NO VISITORS TO THE DHB

No visitors will be permitted to enter any of the Waikato DHB hospitals, this includes the southern rural and Thames hospitals.

We recognise how important the support of whānau and friends is for our patients. However, this is an extraordinary situation and a necessary precaution for the safety of our patients, staff and community.

There are a few exceptions: Paediatrics – one caregiver for the duration of the child’s stay Delivery/maternity – the partner OR nominated support person for birth Emergency Department – one visitor/support person Essential or compassionate grounds – this is at the sole discretion of the Charge Nurse Manager and must be agreed prior to arrival, please phone the Waikato DHB number (07 839 8899) and ask for the Charge Nurse Manager for the ward your loved one is in Security will be at all entry and exit points and will require information from you to verify your eligibility to enter the hospitals.

We encourage patients and families to use technology to stay in touch as much as possible during this time. Our hospitals have Wi-Fi access which can help to support this.

TELEHEALTH Waikato DHB outpatient clinics and GPs have moved to telehealth or phone consultations wherever possible and we will be providing additional services soon. We will let you know as soon as new services are available.

Understanding the Covid-19 lag While the community is in lockdown, it is important to understand why we have to be patient, to see the effetcs of the lockdown on the exponential growth rate of Covid-19 cases As of March 31, total cases in New Zealand were: Confirmed cases: 600 Probable cases: 47 Total confirmed and probable cases: 647 Number of Cases in hospital: 14 Number of recovered cases: 74 Number of deaths: 1 We are currently at the start of week 2 of the lockdown so we can expect to continue to see a rise in cases.

The Government this week has also loosened restrictions around testing so in the coming weeks we can expect to see an increase in case numbers as more people become eligible for Covid-19 testing.

We won't really know how well our efforts to stamp out this virus have been until we get to around week 3-4 of the lockdown.

What's important is that we all stay in our bubbles and try our best to restrict our movement in order to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Stay home unless to access essential services.

Take a walk around your neighbourhood and remember that if you are driving to exercise, it's not exercise!

We know it's hard but emergency services have asked that people also stay away from the water in case something happens to you and it leads to causing unnecesary pressure on emergency services.
