Who do I coach?

Raglan Area School (RAS) Netball team year's 8 and 9 (12, 13 and 14-year - old's).

How long have I coached for?

I have coached the teams for about 6 years.

Why did I coach?

I wanted my daughter Kendall to be part of a team sport and it started with running Future Ferns in Raglan with myself and Teresa Hayes back when our girls were about 6 or 7.

What are the highlights of coaching a team?

Seeing them grow and develop in their game and become closer with each other as a team. I almost see these girls like my own and they call me “mum” around school which is kinda cool. We do fun stuff together as well as train.

What are the challenges?

Girls at this age can be too chatty so listening is high on the challenge list.

Living rurally can be hard to get into the game but because we are part of the School sports teams we have had use of the school van and get loads of support and help from the school.

What is your coaching style?

I want this time we have to be a life experience and to learn to get on with each other and hopefully kick some butt on the netball court so I have more of a personal type of coaching and try and

Is it all about winning?

I like to see them win the games because it gives them a huge boost but when they play a solid flowing game and they lose I always tell them how proud I am of them. When our team beats bigger schools like Dio and Sacred Heart it feels good!

Was sport important to me growing up?

I come from a sporting family and had the opportunity to learn many sports. I played rep netball for all my college years and was selected to play for Waikato Under 16's and 18's which is now like the Junior Magic team.

How do I think team sports benefits young ones today?

The team come from all different backgrounds and circumstances. It gives them a sense of ownership and being part of something socially and playing for the school it gives them a sense of pride. We have a big focus at RAS on team sports and that can only be good for everyone.

Best piece of advice I can give parents?

Be involved with your child with your time - learn to coach or ref.

Everyone starts at the beginning but the rewards are huge when you see your child beam when they got a great intercept or goal.

Animal Feed Specialists� Classic cycle event: Racers prepare for the start of the cycle race around Mount Karioi on Sunday.

he Karioi Classic event is attracting increasing numbers of older cyclists, say organisers of the annual Raglan race.

Lisa Thomson, who organised Sunday’s event with Dirk De Ruysscher, said most of the 226 entries for the cycle part of the race were from 40 to 59-year-olds. The oldest competitor was 70.

This year, cyclists could choose to do the 43km cycle around the Mount Karioi or the 57km route. The longer ride was the more popular choice of older riders, with 12 entries from 60 to 64-year-olds and seven cyclists over 65 years.

“I think people realise what it is to be fit [as they get older],” Lisa said. “They just think ‘I’m going to stay healthy and fit’ and they just go for it. It’s incredibly inspiring.”

The older women were competitive too. Kirsten Milne from Te Awamutu (4049 years division) was 26 minutes ahead of her closest, and younger, woman rival in the

43km run.

Amy Haddon (30-39 years) won the women’s 57km race, with the first 14 women over the finish line in that race aged 30 to 65 years and over. Sarah Backler (30-39 years) was the first woman home in the 43km cycle race.

But for the men, winning seemed to be more in the hands of the younger competitors.

The top male runner was Carl Fischer (18-29 years). The top place in the 57km race went to Sam Gaze, followed by two other 18-29 year-olds, and the 43km winner was Nathan Johnston from the 17 years and under division.

Raglan doctor Mike Loten, competing in the 43km race, came in first for his 40-49 age group and third overall for that race. His wife, Joan, was the fifth woman home and was the sole female competitor in the field on a single speed bike.

Thirty-two runners left the Raglan Fire Station at 7.30am on Sunday for their 43km route around Mount Karioi, running uphill,

downhill, on gravel, and along the coast to finish, mud-splattered and exhausted, at the Raglan airfield.

Two hours later the 126 cyclists left for the 57km race, followed half an hour later by the 100 cyclists in the shorter 43km race.

A prize-giving ceremony was held later at the Raglan Club, where ceramic medals made by Raglan’s The Monster Company were given to the top three place-getters in each race. The fastest man and woman from both cycle races received $500 each and were made ‘king and queen’ with crowns made by local artist Chris Meek.

Lisa said the Karioi Classic race, which was now in its sixth year, had a loyal base of competitors, with about 70 percent of participants having done the cycle or run part of the race in previous years.

Dirk said they tried to do things a little bit differently each year so they could still attract competitors to their mid-winter event.

This dynamic, hard-working young couple who moved to Raglan nearly three years ago are the creators of the booming Raglan Coconut Yoghurt business that began by accident eight months ago.

Already busy with a joint business and web consultancy company, Tesh started experimenting with making coconut yoghurt at home to cater for Seb’s dairy intolerance.

After making an extra large batch in November, she posted a notice on the Raglan Noticeboard asking if anyone wanted to buy the couple of extra jars she had.

“I had a crazy response. Within a day I had 60 people who wanted yoghurt,” she said.

So the pair spent the weekend making yoghurt and Raglan Coconut Yoghurt was born shortly after.

“It was a really natural evolution of people locally wanting it and telling their friends. Then shops wanted to stock it.”

Zealand now stocked the yoghurt and the pair, with the help of a few workers, was producing around 1000 jars a week at the Old School Arts Centre’s commercial kitchen.

Now the plan was to set up their own kitchen in Raglan using refurbished shipping containers and they hoped to be operational

by October, Tesh said.

The couple also had the more mainstream market, such as supermarkets, in their sights and could add other coconut products and flavoured coconut yoghurts to its line.

Tesh said there seemed to be a big demand for the naturally dairy-free coconut yoghurt from people with dairy intolerances, as well as from vegans and those on the FODMAP and Paleo diets.

The yoghurt also appealed to a growing number of people who were avoiding dairy for environmental reasons.

Of course, another reason was that people just loved the yoghurt.

“People get addicted to it,” Tesh laughed.

“We eat tons of it.”

It was hard to see how the couple could fit this growing business into their lives, along with their consultancy business, buying a new home and putting a yurt on their property.

Tesh was also the editor of the quarterly Arrival Magazine, a writer for numerous business, health and lifestyle magazines and did a weekly column on the evolution of Raglan Coconut Yoghurt for business magazine Ideolog.

As an experienced wordsmith, she had self-published a children’s book and a second one would be published in August by an Auckland publishing firm.

But she wouldn’t live anywhere else, she said. Raglan was a great lifestyle choice for the couple, and now Raglan Coconut Yoghurt was reciprocating by benefiting the local community.

“I just like the idea of having a thriving business in Raglan and employing Raglanders,” Tesh said.

The business also used local honey in its product, used recycled paper from LJ Hooker for its packaging, had aprons made by a local woman for taste-testing appearances and kept the local courier busy.

“It only started because it’s Raglan and everyone’s so keen to support you and buy a jar. It wouldn’t happen anywhere else,” Tesh said.

Art To Wear mulls how it can turn fewer away

“There’s got to be something more,” coordinator and fabric artist Jean Carbon told the Chronicle last week ahead of meetings in August to plan for the next show, which is now less than a year away. “We need to make it bigger, newer and much more exciting,” she said.

The size of the town hall in Bow Street – it seats only 150 – confines the biennial event, Jean laments.

“We could sell so many more tickets … they’re gone the first morning they’re on sale.”

Locals who are turned away are always disappointed, she adds, let alone visitors to town who can’t get tickets on the day because there are never any door sales.

Jean has reservations that staging an extra show on the Sunday – following the Saturday matinee and evening performances – would be a good idea for the many children involved. “They’ll be shattered!”

But she’s excited at the suggestion made after the

last event in 2013 of a live feed to a licensed venue like the Old School Arts Centre in Stewart Street or the Yot Club downtown. Organisers could be at both venues simultaneously, she says, perhaps with a Wintec student in charge of the overall project.

The coming month will see the hard decisions made by a small team of arts enthusiasts – including stalwarts Margot Gillard and Penny Knuiman – who along with Jean and choreographer Patti Mitchley have been the driving forces behind the event, which is about to be mounted for its fifth or sixth time.

After that it’s the funding applications and budgets to be sorted. Staging the event costs $10-12,000, Jean reveals, so funds from Creative New Zealand and WEL Energy Trust are imperative.

But Art To Wear also has “fantastic” sponsorship from local businesses, she adds, and gets huge participation from the local schools and pre-schools to help make it a success.

As an artist herself Jean says it’s not too early for entrants to start thinking now about their creations for the fashion extravaganza, collecting for them or building and making them. “I need a lot of time to start thinking of art things,” she admits of her own hand-dyed silk garments and accessories.

This time round the recycled section – sponsored by Xtreme Zero Waste – is titled ‘On the Re-bound’ and the focus for the colour section is ‘Scarlet Fever’, possibly evoking images from the heady world of movies such as Moulin Rouge and Burlesque, Jean suggests.

Te Wiki o te Reo Maori celebrates 40 years

S

unday 27th July was the official launch date of Māori Language week - Te Wiki o te Reo Maori.

Commemorating 40 years since the very first Māori Language Day in 1975, this year's theme is ‘Whāngaihia te reo ki ngā Mātua’ or 'instil the language into parents.'

Off the back of the viral video of Kapiti teen Finnian Galbraith and his message about Maori pronunciation, we are reminded of the value te reo holds in our culture.

The poster above, engages the iconic image of Whina Cooper and her mokopuna from the 1975 land march, as they set off on the journey of a life time, now widely regarded as a flashpoint for Māori cultural reclamation. The northern matriarch’s protest was deliberately staged to coincide with the first Māori Language Day (later to become Māori Language Week).

For Māori, land/whenua/pāpātuānuku and language/reo are inextricably linked. Alienation of one is an alienation of the other. This image is a reminder of our past and the long journey we have taken. It also reflects on the importance of parents and caregivers in nurturing the next generation.

The poster above on the right depicts newly appointed Māori Language Commissioner, Hinurewa Poutu, with her students and whānau of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Mana Tamariki.

Despite being captured 40 years apart, the two images represent journey, progress, hope and

courage to face adversity.

The message, however, remains the same: Toitū te whenua, toitū te mana, toitū te reo!

Opinion: What is the TPPA Agreement?

I I haven’t been for a long time.

am not ‘Proud to Be an American’.

Telling people that I am from America is not always the most positive way to start a conversation around here (or anywhere outside of America for that matter). But because this is the land of my Father, the land of his Father and so on, the people have welcomed me with open arms.

However, that doesn’t keep the occasional person from awkwardly smiling when I tell them where I am from. They ask what it was like to live there and they ask if I've seen the news lately. Every week there's sadly something negative happening somewhere in America.

I remember singing “I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free...” when I was in elementary school.

America! Freedom! Pride! It is drilled into your brain from the age of five. And now, this supposed idea of freedom is knocking on the door of New Zealand and other countries throughout the South Pacific in the form of the TPPA, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

The TPPA is meant to "Unlock opportunity for Americans through trade with the Asia Pacific,” but at what cost?

The U.S. Government has violated their own country. They have perverted the idea of freedom. They have exhausted the land and the people, so now they’re coming for ours.

Don’t get me wrong, the New Zealand government has its fair share of problems too and our leaders are very much a part of these secret TPPA meetings. But the U.S. Government is imploding, and instead of fixing their own country, they look to rape and raid the last viable part of the world.

If the TPPA passes in New Zealand, it means good ol’ insurance companies from the U.S. could come sweeping in and take away public health care, big pharma corporations (from the U.S.) would snatch up affordable pharmaceuticals and hike up the prices, sacred land that is currently under protection could be opened up for who knows what, it will also impact Internet privacy laws, companies would no longer have to label their GMO food products properly, copyright laws could be altered at the disadvantage and charge of the people, the Treaty of Waitangi could become completely irrelevant... and so much more that we don’t know about.

To make matters worse, if New Zealand or any country resists the demands of others within the TPPA (mainly demands from the U.S.) they could be sued for violation of treaty.

The people of New Zealand... my people, my ancestors, have suffered enough at the hands of the Crown.

If the U.S. can so easily give away sacred land in Arizona and Hawaii (and many more places we probably haven’t heard about), they will not bat an eye at Maori land in New Zealand.

Watching the government of the country that I am supposed to be ‘proud’ to be from, huff and puff their way through the door just because their own country is crumbling is terrifying.

But this isn’t just about New Zealand, this is about all of the countries involved in the TPPA whose voices cannot be heard.

This is about their people who have no idea what is going on.

The TPPA is passing right before our eyes. It is an invisible corporate monster waiting to unleash its venom from the inside out.

Sovereignty is being stripped away by the big bad wolf that is the ‘United’

States Government. Although the U.S. is weak, their worldwide threat is very much alive and real. It is something I did not fully recognise until I moved out of their suffocating grasp.

We, the citizens of this world, are being controlled by emotionally dead men in suits who send numbing agents down the pipeline in the form of celebrity gossip and half-assed news coverage. They are fuelled by greed and power and will stop at nothing to get more. Although their puppets are being exposed, the strings still need to be cut.

Maybe this trade agreement would benefit everyone. But if that were the case we would know exactly how. Things wouldn’t be so secretive and my new home wouldn’t feel so threatened.

So now what?

I don’t know. I’m not necessarily a political activist. I have my concerns and frustrations, but politics are definitely not my forte. I am simply fuelled by conflicted emotions that run deep through two countries. In the states I am a minority because I am half Polynesian. In New Zealand I am a foreigner because of my accent. I may look like I belong here, but I don’t sound like I belong. It’s even worse that I sound like an American.

It’s hard not to feel helpless when it seems like our world has been set on fire and those guilty of arson are the ones in charge.

There has to be something. There has to be a way to win.

There are 7 billion of us. Seven billion citizens of the world being controlled by maybe... 5000? When you compare the number of people in power, to the number of people they have power over… it all just sounds ridiculous.

This new transition of the TPPA will change the future for all of us, and they are not giving us a say.

Maybe this is not the most politically correct piece, and I’m missing a few keywords and politically correct phrases.

I’m just trying to make sense of it all.

You would think that something of this magnitude that will affect millions of people around the world, would be more… open.

TPP negotiations have been going on for years. New Zealand originally entered into an agreement in 2006. But the new signatories, particularly the U.S., coming into it changes everything.

After a recent post on social media, I discovered that there are still so many people who have never even heard of the TPPA. Some might consider that as being uninformed, but the governments and corporations consider that a success.

So if you know anything about the TPPA, please pass that information on to others. If you don’t... start asking questions.

Because this is about all of us. If you live in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, Singapore, Mexico, Malaysia, Peru, Japan, Chile, Canada or Brunei, this will affect you. Thanks to the ripple effect, it will ultimately affect the entire world.

It’s time to speak up. The people, the citizens of the world have a right to know and have a say in their future.

We all live on this planet and we all have to survive.

So why don’t we survive on the basis of true and honest freedom, implored and empowered by and for the people.
