A karaoke contest at the Raglan Club on Friday night brought out some 5 1 a W h a a n ga Ro a d , W h a l e B a y, R a g lof a n ,Raglan’s NZ best singers.

In the end it was Jo Fairclough who “blew everyone away” with her last song, Feeling Good, and took away the $500 cash first prize.

Shirley-Ann Te Pou came second, winning $150 cash, followed by Dah Murphy, then Sander Kischemoller.

“There was enthusiastic applause and there was a lot of attention centred

on them,” Chris said, adding that the club’s weekly draw, which was up to $2800, had also helped bring in a receptive crowd.

Chris said the club wanted to try something different to generate a bit of interest among its patrons and had then secured sponsors for the event.

The karaoke contest, run by Johnnie Cole, had been so well received that the club was thinking of doing it again, at least once a year from now on.

“The venue’s great for that sort of thing because you’ve got a captive audience. It was also great family entertainment.”

The Raglan Club would also have some special events next year when it celebrated its 60th birthday.

The sun shone on the annual Ryder Cup Golf competition between New Zealand and the rest of the world held recently at the Raglan Golf Club.

Kiwi team, that already held the Ryder Cup from last years event, retained the trophy for the third straight year.

New Zealand team captain Peter Hogg said that his team had performed well under pressure but the competition was getting closer every year and this years event went right to the wire.

With all the competitors living in New Zealand no one seemed to mind the as the cheers rang out for the home team and everyone agreed it was a great day.

Twenty eight players took part in the event which saw the rest of the world team captained by Stuart Doran trying to win the event for the first time since its conception in 2011.

The Kiwi team took an early lead in the morning pairs taking a two and a half to one and a half point lead into the afternoon singles. With just about all of the games going to the last hole it was a tense afternoon with the result of the very last match deciding the outcome.

With the rest of the world winning the singles seven and a half to six and a half the competition ended Peter Hogg (L) and Mike Goodison up in a draw at nine all meaning that the with the Ryder Cup.

Raglan teacher floors rival to take NZ kickboxing title

A

s a karate kid turned kickboxer Jonathan Rickard’s used to taking the odd belt, but there’s nothing to match the giant one he’s come away with from the World Kickboxing Associationsanctioned New Zealand champs in Auckland.

The 37-year-old Raglan Area School teacher is now a New Zealand kickboxing champion after knocking out his opponent in the final of the light heavyweight division at the nationals, held recently at the Orewa Arts & Events Centre.

Jonathan – who has also won New Zealand karate titles in two weight classes in the past – proudly showed off to the Chronicle the winner’s belt, trophy and gold medal as he relaxed at home in Raglan West last Sunday.

“I was pretty happy with myself,” he says of his victory over Auckland opponent Daniel Chang. “He was young, he was fit, he was throwing lots of combinations … but I managed to score a fifth-round knockout.”

With 30-odd years’ experience in karate behind him – achieving a 3rd dan black belt – and now also more than a decade of kickboxing, Jonathan reckons he doesn’t get too nervous before a fight. “You develop the skills, you grow with that, you learn,” he says philosophically of the discipline.

His father Pablo has taught karate locally in the town hall since 1988 and Jonathan admits that’s had a strong influence on him. “I took a big lead from my dad.”

A lot of the martial arts teachings are transferrable life skills, he adds, referring to the respect and perseverance that come with the training.

Jonathan says he was a diminutive kid way back who got picked on, but that karate skills gave him reassurance and confidence in himself. And because of it he believes he’s better able to meet the needs of his young

Combining teaching with his passion for kickboxing are closely related, he insists; it’s simply about working with people in different ways to get the best results from their own abilities.

In all Jonathan’s had 76 karate and “18 or 19” kickboxing fights. And though he’s keen to continue training at the House of Pain gym

in Hamilton five times a week with multiple world kickboxing champ Ethan Shepp, he’s considering not fighting competitively too much longer as it’s hard on the body and as he gets older his recovery from injuries is slower.

“I might hang up my gloves for good at the end of the year,” he says.

But not before one last fight – at the ‘Knees of Fury’ show – at the YMCA in Hamilton this October.

“I’ll see what happens [after that].”

Clothing business comes home Raglan’s iconic clothes shop Scintilla is back in town.

After an absence of about six years, Scintilla has just opened in Wallis Street with a selection of its original New Zealand-made clothes along with a range of accessories and a winter sale to boot.

“I feel like I’ve come full circle,” said owner and Raglan resident Rebecca Dowling, who was enjoying being back in Raglan. “It’s just so nice to reconnect with lots of old faces.”

The former Scintilla shop in Raglan – which initially started under the name of Urchin - closed in an effort to reduce overheads and scale back the business, which was then supplying stores in Hamilton, Silverdale and Wellington, she said.

Scintilla had enjoyed about 12 good years in Raglan and developed quite a following: “It was a big business back then – I had a lot of staff. It was kind of a boom time for the clothing industry.”

Rebecca was busy. She joined forces with her sister, Anna – who had a clothing store in Silverdale - in the Scintilla business and the pair opened a Scintilla shop in both Hamilton, which closed about two years ago, and Wellington.

She had also been selling her creations in Cambridge’s Left Makers Collective

shop along with other Raglan artists Hayley Hamilton, Karla Stevenson, Carrie Andrews and Deborah Powel.

That shop closed earlier this year, with the lack of tourists and extra weekend traffic, travel from Raglan and an “offthe-beaten track” location taking its toll.

Online shopping, and cheap imports in particular, had a massive impact on the New Zealand clothing industry, and to counteract it Rebecca had to make careful financial decisions and cut costs wherever she could.

“I think it’s just a reality of the New Zealand economy - the sheer scale of choice we have now,” Rebecca said.

However, the quality and individuality of her pieces had not been compromised, and her clothes were still designed and sewn in the Waikato.

Being unique was an important part of her philosophy, and she was no slave to fashion trends.

She described her signature style as “an individual look with attention to detail for real New Zealand women who like to have a few pieces that are a bit unique.”

Quality and the use of natural fabrics and materials was also part of her signature look, and also helped give the clothes their longevity. Rebecca still saw women wearing Scintilla or Urchin clothes they

has evolved into both a business and a top sports administration job for Conan Herbert.

The unassuming 31 year old runs his own company – Tai Paddles – on the outskirts of Raglan, supplying custommade paddles to waka ama and SUP paddlers throughout the Pacific and even to such unlikely places as New York and Sweden.

But while Conan can often be found in his Okete workshop designing and building the paddles himself come weekends – and evenings “after the kids have gone to bed” – by day he’s either downtown in his office or on the road as national development manager for Waka Ama New Zealand.

It’s a position Conan’s held for two years now, and one in which he gets to actively develop and promote waka ama (outrigger canoeing) all over the country.

“I feel extremely lucky to be so involved with something that I love,” he told the Chronicle last week.

Conan’s parents were among the original group of paddlers who helped revive the sport in New Zealand during the late ’80s. Nga Hoe Horo in the Far North was one of the first waka ama clubs in New Zealand back then, and Conan fondly remembers “getting dragged around the country (racing) as a young fella”.

He’s since paddled competitively worldwide, attending his first world champs in Fiji at the age of 15. He has won national sprint and distance titles, and competed and steered top teams in prestigious races like Hawaiki Nui Va’a in Tahiti and Molokai Hoe in Hawaii.

Conan reckons he played a lot of sports while growing up in the small settlement of

Pawarenga, in the Hokianga. But he says it’s waka ama that was always his overriding passion and which has led to his lifestyle in Raglan with wife Lana Hartstone, who does the Tai Paddles admin work while at home with pre-schoolers Metua and Hana.

The couple are active members of the 60-strong local waka ama club – Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka – and in fact met through their love of the competitive sport. They are among several longtime organisers of the annual Whaingaroa hoe which this year attracted record numbers to Raglan in celebration of its 21st year.

Waka ama has now expanded to 90-odd clubs throughout New Zealand, including the South Island where Conan sees “our biggest potential for growth”.

His main role at the moment, he explains, is developing a national coaching framework for the sport. That entails setting up and co-ordinating major events like the Whaingaroa hoe which comes last on the waka ama calendar each May. Before that there’s the national secondary school champs in Rotorua each March or April – a regatta which involves about 100 schools and 1600 students – while every January it’s the national sprints at Lake Karapiro with just under 4000 competitors.

“There’s also a big push for us (at Waka Ama NZ) around developing water safety initiatives,” Conan adds of his responsibilities.

Conan came to his current job after first gaining valuable experience as a regional development officer for Sport Waikato working in partnership with Waka Ama NZ. It was a newly created role aimed at upskilling coaches and assisting the development of waka ama clubs throughout the Waikato.

“I felt I had been competing a number of years … and with the paddlemaking business under way, it was a natural progression to move into sports administration,” Conan explains.

The step up from regional to national level admin had the added advantage of allowing him to leave commuting behind, he says, and work from a downtown office shared with Surfing New Zealand.

But making paddles back home and nurturing Tai Paddles – the business he set up in 2006 – is still a big part of Conan’s life. He initially supplied paddles to order for Moana Nui, a small family company that he worked with as a teen on the Tutukaka Coast making both waka and paddles.

Having then studied systems engineering at Massey University, he developed a penchant for design and Conan was able to “slowly progress” to creating his own products for Tai Paddles.

He’s proud the company has grown now to employ two others from the Raglan community, and that it also puts work the way of other local businesses such as D Signs.

Conan keeps a close eye on the manufacturing process to ensure his paddles are up to standard. “I’m the quality control team,” he quips.

“They need to be light but strong,” he says of the paddles which are built of laminated timber – both hard and softwoods – and composites like carbon-fibre.

While there’s a trend to manufacture paddles offshore, in China for instance, Conan and Lana feel strongly that keeping their business in Raglan ensures quality and gives them a point of difference.

“And it’s good for the local economy,” Conan adds.

Growing up there were six boys and five girls, and I often got asked, “what number are you?” I am number eight. My mother is Maori from Ngati Maniapoto/Te Arawa. My Father is Pakeha, a Teacher, who raised us in Hamilton. Life growing up was busy, exciting, confusing, adventurous and, culturally, often a challenge.

I became a mother at the age of sixteen. I was proud and loved being a mum but carried the guilt and shame of disappointing others and thinking I failed my parents. I remember my Father coming to hospital and reluctantly asking me if I intended to keep my daughter. I said, “I am going to keep her Dad,” and he replied, “Great, ok let's get on with it then.” My Father was my hero that day!

Soon after I lost a number of family members quickly including my mother, grandmother, auntie, nephew and niece. One thing guaranteed is we will all pass away, but when it seems before your time it can feel cruel, confusing, and mean!

aglan businesses were acknowledged for their work and contribution to the community this past weekend at the Waipa Networks 2015 Business Awards.

The Raglan Chamber of Commerce and Raglan businesses were invited to join the Business Awards this year by the Te Awamutu and Cambridge Chambers.

This was a time of enormous reflection on my life, my relationships – everything. A flatmate moving out said, “Life without an understanding of God can feel shallow.” Then he gave me his Bible, and said, “try this drug.” I had to oblige!

I read for a year, and then one day, standing in front of my window looking out across Whale Bay, the window fogged like a camera lens slightly out of focus. I went to the next room, surprised at finding the window crystal clear, the view beautiful, in perfect focus. A love and peace filled the room that day which cannot be explained with words. God entered my heart with a gentle voice saying, “Reach out, don't live another day without me in it.” I had no idea what that was going to look like. Thirty years on I continue this journey of discovering the power of faith in Jesus, and I’m grateful God met me in one of the most beautiful places on earth – Whaingaroa.

Online investment platform good for business: Aeronavics ocal business Aeronavics L is a firm supporter of crowdfunding, saying it is a great way to raise capital for a good business idea without having to give away control.

The Te Uku-based aerial robotic business raised $1.5 million capital within a few days in February using the crowdfunding investment platform, which has only been allowed in New Zealand since last year.

“If you’ve got an idea and

you’re passionate about it, it’s a brilliant thing,” said Aeronavics co-director Rob Brouwer. “Great ideas get supported. I think that’s the beauty of crowdfunding.”

Aeronavics’ drive to raise a minimum $750,000 of capital was the biggest crowdfunding campaign in New Zealand at that time, and resulted in 213 shareholders – a mix of investors and the general public – getting a combined 15 percent stake in the company.

Rob said the online offering of shares through crowdfunding was not very different from listing on

the stock exchange, with the same requirements for reporting back to shareholders.

The company also had to establish a board of directors and would hold its first annual general meeting next month.

Otherwise, Aeronavics “haven’t heard a word” from the shareholders and had been left to get on with its mission of increasing production capacity, revamping its technology and bringing in more skilled staff, including a new Kiwi-born operations manager.

‘Neighbours at War’ Show Focuses on Raglan A reality TV show about disputes between neighbours has come to Raglan, with the resulting programme airing on television next week.

The ‘Neighbours at War’ programme that focused on one dispute in Raglan and one in Massey would be shown on TV2 on Thursday, August 13 at 8.30pm.

“Tonight, moggies are missing and some locals say there’s a serial killer at work. It’s got the experts baffled and the neighbours spooked,” say the billings for the Raglan part of the show.

TV, said the story mostly focused on a couple of locals talking about their cats going missing, as the other party in the dispute had declined to be interviewed.

“As is the case in all the stories we take on, these neighbours were seeking some sort of resolution for what had been a very upsetting situation. The cats going missing had been a sensitive issue for a number of years,” Greenstone’s production team said.

“Unfortunately we weren’t able to get a mediation in Raglan, but hopefully by sharing their story, it helped our people reach some sort of closure,” they said.

Bulk had originally looked at raising capital through angel investment, whereby large investors helped small start up or emerging companies. But this type of investment implied a close relationship so it was important to choose investors that fitted with the company’s vision.

“With crowdfunding, we didn’t have to do that. We were still able to choose our own direction and make our own decisions.”

Aeronavics had laid out a fiveyear plan to its new shareholders, which included a plan not to pay

any dividends in the short-term but to reinvest the money back into the business.

The future held many possibilities for the company, and listing on the stock exchange or sale of the business could not be ruled out, Rob said.

But the plan in the meantime was to keep building up the business, with a “strategic alliance” with another New Zealand company, providing another injection of investment, in the pipeline.

Council recommends no shellfish collection in Raglan Harbour Due to an overflow of untreated wastewater last weekend the collection of shellfish is not advised near Greenslade Road/Lorenzen Bay until further notice.

Council was made aware of the overflow late Saturday afternoon by a member of the public and at this stage

the quantity of wastewater released in to the harbour is unknown. It’s understood the cause of the overflow was a blocked pipe and this will be confirmed at a later stage.

Warning signs have been installed in the area. Waikato Regional Council and the Waikato District Health Board Public Health Officer have been advised.

Councillor’s Column The sun is rising earlier and the days are getting longer, spring and summer are on their way.

It appears to have been a colder winter than we’ve had for sometime with a number of folk going down with the flu.

Councillors’ recently took part in a workshop on births, deaths and migration in the Waikato district between 2006 and 2012.

I’ve raised this issue before and some of the key statistics indicate that the population is increasing in size, however not all towns share the same growth.

There is a declining proportion of youth but the population is ageing, although Te Kauwhata, Tamahere and Raglan experienced gains.

Raglans population is quite interesting in the 25- 34 group as some leave for tertiary education and employment and others in the same age group arrive for lifestyle choices and employment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry.

As time goes by the older age group will increase in size and represent more of the population, so attracting people in the 25-34years will maintain a balance.

I raise this issue because for the last few years I’ve been invited to answer questions by school children from outside of Raglan suggesting that we will grow like Mount Maunganui, to which I respond by saying no.

It does however pose the question of what population growth will look like in the future, given migration patterns.
