Yes, I know I wrote my last piece some time ago.

But now I’m settled in at Cascades Retirement Unit (number 22) it might be useful for any other elderly gentlemen or ladies to get a recommendation from a happy man already in residence. I miss the sea but have grown to love Hamilton Lake, just a four-minute walk away.

The local council say they are going to clean up the lake to a swimming state. At the moment its well endowed with duck poo.

Otherwise the ducks will have to go, although they are a feature of the lake and I enjoy feeding them with the crust from my bread.

But I miss the sea still and am off to Raglan for a swim at the bottom of Lorenzen Bay Road.

isa Thomson has been going beyond the call of duty to get shit done as Raglan ward councillor.

On Wednesday last week she joined council worker Roger Smith on his weekly inspection of the 18 pumping stations in Raglan, a six-hour job that she described as “stinky and pooey”.

Her voluntary attendance was to get a clear understanding of how our sewage system works as she helps to develop a wastewater education programme to be rolled out across the district.

The education programme, along with the now weekly inspections of the pumping stations, is the start of a long-term, multimillion-dollar solution to reduce the number of sewage spills in the district, after three spills in four months into the Raglan Harbour last year.

“I have been wanting to do that for ages, actually, particularly just to get a clear picture of what our system looks like and how it operates,” says Lisa, who now feels so enlightened after helping to unblock a pump in Nero St. “It’s been really insightful, a real eye opener… the system is massive – our capacity for waste is quite massive.

“And it’s astounding that we have 721 manholes in Raglan. It’s amazing the amount of infrastructure there is to get your poo from your bum to the ponds.”

Lisa, who describes her outing as fun, says each station has two submersible pumps built to submarine standards.

“There is a drop of about six to seven metres to where the pumps are,” says Lisa,

who felt sick looking in – not because of all the human waste but because she has vertigo.

“You are looking down into an abyss.”

To unjam the pump in Nero St, “Roger went down” so he could attach it to a hoist.

As it came up, Lisa washed the pump off with a hose and had to physically pull off what was stuck to it.

That was rags. And rope. And hair. All stuck together in a great big poo-covered ball.

The previous week Roger pulled out two colostomy bags, Lisa says.

“Also another time he pulled out three syringes, and he pulled out undies, and his only complaint was they didn’t fit him.

“It’s a very undesirable job to have.”

However: “It was a really neat day with Roger, he is very helpful, always has a smile on his face and nothing is too much work.”

Of their rounds, Lisa says they found big chunks of polystyrene in the system, and rocks.

“How does that get in there?”

She helped to bring up the floats – they indicate where the level of wastewater is at – and “there were nappies and wet wipes stuck to them”.

“On the floats and all around on the outside of the walls of the pumping station is fat! It comes out of your poo (and it’s from cooking) and sticks to the sides!

“The grossest one is the camping ground pumping station, you can see all those big poos floating around. Roger has

to check it every day in summer because of the volume of waste.”

Lisa says her experience highlighted the importance behind the education programme she is developing with Raglan Community Board member Tony Oosten.

“Certainly, we as community members can make a difference by not putting nappies, down – or wipes, rags, undies colostomy bags, syringes …

“It’s not out of sight out, of mind… a local person has to go and take out all that shit jammed in that pump.

“Roger is on call to fix broken pipes, leaks, jammed pump stations, if there is an alarm going off … There’s the realisation that there is little time if there is a blockage – he has to work out very quickly what is wrong and get the necessary backup before there is an overflow.”

Lisa says the education programme, which will target residents and visitors, gives the green light about what to flush.

The mantra is pee, poo and paper, only.

“It’s a bit like the tidy Kiwi thing, there will be different platforms of engagement and it will be quirky.”

And while Lisa is now keen to get out with other council workers, to get an understanding of their jobs, she hasn’t ruled out another foray into our sewage system.

Roger has offered to get her in the harness and inside the caverns of one of the pumping stations.

“So my next trip might be into the bowels of one of those,” she laughs.

Fundraising committee member Susanne Giessen Prinz says getting funding from large trusts is dependent on the project being also supported by the community, “then the big dollars will come”.

“They want to see more action, that we are serious and passionate.

“Now we are asking for hand-outs before going for the big dollars from all those trusts.”

The new two-storey creative space will replace the existing Clay Shed and the room used by the Lions to sort second-hand clothing for its opportunity shop, and will include an upstairs black box theatre space.

Building is hoped to start in April 2018.

Susanne says the Old School is asking the community to make a tax-deductible pledge or donate goods and services for its Super Summer Bumper Raffle being organised by Bow St Depot owner Heidi Tidmarsh.

“It could be a plumber says if you give me the contract I will give you $5000 in free labour,” says Susanne, who has been going about town infecting business owners with her enthusiasm for the project.

Or maybe Raglan business owners could donate a prize towards the raffle, which has a trip for two to the Gold Coast as its main prize.

Susanne and other supporters of the Old School have been doing a mailbox drop of 1200 letters, asking for pledges.

“The smallest amount will help, it all adds up to the big picture.”

The Old School currently has about $100,000 in the coffers, from money pledged by the Logan Campbell Estate,

Trust Waikato and the Raglan Community Board.

Susanne says they hope to raise $20,000 through the community before applying for money to the Lotteries Community Facilities fund in June.

“They double everything we have raised, everything from the smallest amount. That’s why we are so keen for the community to take part.”

Susanne says the arts centre is a hub of activity and a new building will enable the Old School to offer even more creative services in the future.

“When the facilities are bigger we can offer more – that’s what the arts centre is for, it’s to grow the arts.

“I see how much pleasure and happiness the certain activities give to Raglan children. We run to full capacity and with the new building we can fan out to more audiences, embrace more young people.

“On Wednesday for ballet and drama it is just crazy in here and all the mums are sitting here. Most of the children of Raglan get involved in the Old School, even if it is just a cake stall at the market.

“With the new building we will be able to offer way, way more.”

Susanne says the arts centre is also important because it acts like an incubator to help businesses get off the ground.

“The likes of Raglan Coconut and Monster all started at the Old School.”

Dizzy Blocks, Raglan Pie Co and FeastBox all continue to use the commercial kitchen.

Other fundraising initiatives for the new creative space will include travel slide-show evenings at the Old School, with nibbles and drinks.

Susanne says she will be first off the block, on May 5, talking about her experience and showing off her photos from a recent trip to Antarctica. Slide show evenings about Tibet and China will follow.

Sports Project Q & A’s with our high achievers

This week the Chronicle caught up with local Adi-Grace Mooar, a rising soccer star and passionate about the sport.

What teams do you play for?

Raglan Area School, and WAIBOP Under14's National Age Group Tournament (NAGT) team (we came second). Thanks to the Lions Club and Raglan Events and Multi Sports Trust for helping me get to the NAGT in Wellington.

How long have you played for Waikato reps?

Five years (since I was 10).

What do you like about the game?

I like the creative side of the game and that it's a team sport. I really enjoy being tricky and playing with friends.

Is there a downside?

You could say injuries are the down side but then you’ll get them with whatever sport you play. Unfortunately I’m injured right now.

What does it involve in terms of practices?

Usually 2-3 practices a week (in Raglan and Cambridge) with games on the weekend.

Do you see yourself continuing the game into adulthood? Any personal goals?

I definitely want to play as an adult, and would love to play for WAIBOP women's and maybe even NZ someday. I would also like to get a soccer scholarship to go to university.

What other sports do you enjoy?

Basketball, surfing, swimming, everything really!

W being criticised for letting the aikato District Council is

grass grow under its feet regarding the Grass Verges Policy adopted in September last year.

The policy, which was developed to keep on top of burgeoning mowing maintenance costs, puts the onus on adjacent landowners to mow verges, however the Raglan Community Board says it’s not working and many property owners who used to have their verges mown are in the dark about their new obligation.

Community board member Alan Vink said the main roads in Raglan weren’t looking flash and it was council’s responsibility to get it sorted.

“Some home owners could mow and don’t, others don’t know whether they should or not and others can’t.

“The issue is not with the contractors.

Council needs to make it clear, say to the house owner, ‘hey you need to do this’.”

Waikato District councillor Lisa Thompson said when Raglan Lawns took over the mowing contract in Raglan it was discovered that the previous contractor, the council-owned company Strada, had been mowing more berms than it had been contracted to do.

While council had contacted property owners whose berms it had knowingly previously mowed of their new responsibilities, “there are a lot of places not being mown now that weren’t on the list”.

Ms Thomson said about 12 residents had contacted her about their berms no longer being mowed, but there would be more, and she had been taking photos and taking their concerns to council.

She said they were primarily residents who lived on Bow St, the main road into town.

“There is confusion around the process, how people were informed. It was in the Chronicle and on the website but obviously that didn’t reach everyone.

“It’s a really difficult position for Raglan Lawns to be in because they are

doing what they are contracted to do, while residents have expectations about what should be done.

“I have said I will do my best to people who have spoken to me. But I don’t know if that will have good results for us.”

Raglan resident Marty Davies, who lives on the corner of Bow St and Snowden Pl, said there had been a total lack of communication by council regarding the mowing of his verge.

“They stopped mowing in September without consultation,” said Marty, who has contacted council about five times without results.

“Apparently we weren’t on the council list but they have been mowing it for years.”

Marty said he was digging in his heels about mowing the verge because his rideon mower couldn’t handle the steepness of it and he had been mowing council land next door for years, “otherwise it looks like a hay paddock”.

“We think they can scratch our backs, too.

“I spent 3k on the ride-on to mow their bit and my bit … they widened the road and made the verge steeper in the process.”

WDC service delivery general manager Tim Harty said the Grass Verge Policy went through full consultation with the community.

“There were many verges – and other areas – that were being maintained by council’s previous contractor that council was not aware of and were not council properties.

“If a property was missed off the mailing list (then) council has dealt with it on a case by case basis as it has become aware of it.”

He said the council had received 47 applications for an exemption from mowing verges and now mowed 28 in Raglan.

Mr Harty said there was no enforcement measure in the policy.

“We would love to see our residents in our towns taking pride in the appearance of where they live.” Inger Vos

any will be familiar with the original Raglan Naturally plan developed in 2001, or have been among those who crammed into the Supper Room of the Town Hall in August last year to celebrate its 15-year anniversary.

The celebration saw a firm resolution to re-ignite and expand upon the original plan. The Raglan Steering Group (RNSG), endorsed by the Community Board, has since been formed.

The RNSG will update the original plan and produce a new version as a blueprint for the future development of Raglan/Whaingaroa. The new version will contain priorities and actions endorsed by the community and act as a living document to future development.

It will guide us in dealing with the challenges and opportunities. To achieve a new document, we plan to have subproject groups and hold meetings where Raglan citizens can talk, listen and become involved.

What have we done so far?

The RNSG have had several faceto-face meetings at Poihakena Marae to frame how we will pursue this project.

We’ve met with Raglan Community Board members and our local councillor who are fully supportive of a new plan.

We’ve met Waikato District Council staff who are also keen to support the project.

In mid-March, we will meet with Mayor Alan Sanson. We’ve established some values based on what was important in 2001, and aim to publish the new Raglan Naturally Plan in 12-18 months’ time.

What next?

Over the coming months we’ll be helping to establish special interest groups, possibly inviting others on to the steering group and seeking advice from local experts. We'll be looking at housing, iwi, tourism, business, environment, youth, education, etc. We'll want input so that we can gain a deep appreciation of all the factors that influence our society.

We want your ideas on how you’d like to see Raglan develop so that the plan fully represents our community. We’re investigating various ways to get your input.

Our next major task is to get funding.

We require a paid project co-ordinator (about 20 hours a week) and a skilled facilitator to guide the planned meetings.

We'll provide regular updates via the Raglan Chronicle and to ask for volunteers in areas of interest. Please keep a look out for updates so you can become involved.

Raglan ‘finishing school’ for country’s lifeguards I Rescue’ viewers but the reality is that t may come as a surprise to avid ‘Piha

Raglan’s the training ground of choice for Surf Life Saving New Zealand when it puts its young lifeguards through their paces.

“We test them (lifeguards) in the best conditions available,” says lifesaving services and education manager Allan Mundy of Ngarunui’s consistent beach break. It’s no contest because the likelihood and the quality of waves at Ngarunui are so high, he explains.

Every year around September – before crowds flock to the beach but when big storm swells are likely to hit – Surf Life Saving New Zealand mounts a major training exercise at Ngarunui.

Typically 75-odd SLSNZ support staff, instructors, examiners and lifeguards (or candidates as they’re called at the training stage) converge upon Raglan from all around the country, Allan says.

Most stay on site at the local clubrooms or at Kopua campground for the duration of the course, he adds, though some from relatively close-by commute daily.

Raglan’s status as the country’s premier rescue training venue was revealed by SLSNZ in a media release about its charity partnership with rental vehicle company Thrifty.

Thrifty supplies 10 4WDs – which Allan says are “our operational staff vehicles” – that assist in essential activities such as search and rescue and transporting volunteer surf lifeguards to training at remote beaches.

The vehicles are an important part of the annual training exercise, Allan explains. Several are driven to Raglan from Auckland, Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty, some towing trailers with engines, equipment and of course the inflatable rescue boats that pluck swimmers in trouble to safety.

Inflatable rescue boat instructor Gabriel Puckey-Brockelsby – who recently came across from the east coast to help train six new IRB drivers at Ngarunui – says that because many of the lifeguards are in their teens and don’t have cars or access to vehicles themselves, it’s the 4WDs that actually get them to training on the other side of the country.

The IRB training itself is “rigorous”, adds Allan. “If it’s three-metre surf then our candidates have to be able to perform in these conditions.”

Operators or boat drivers have had a minimum of 10 weekends of training and skill development in their own clubs even before getting to Ngarunui, he reveals. “That’s our finishing school.”

The boats are spread along the beach, a safe distance apart, while instructors and examiners put the candidates through their paces.

Ngarunui is without a doubt the country’s best training ground for volunteer surf lifeguards, Allan reiterates, because of its rugged and challenging conditions.

SLSNZ’s training and development operations ensure safety at more than 80 New Zealand beaches patrolled from Labour Weekend to Easter every year.

The draft Waikato Plan is now open for public submissions.

The Waikato Plan is the first time that the councils of the Waikato and their strategic partners have joined together with one voice to identify and address the issues that the region faces and take full advantage of our opportunities. The Plan identifies a number of priorities and actions as being critically important for our region.

The Plan will be used in sub-national or national negotiations to leverage additional resourcing and funding for regional needs and development priorities.

Hearings will be held in late April/early May. If you wish to obtain a paper copy of the draft Waikato Plan or its summary, please contact Tracey Deane from Waikato Regional Council’s democratic services on (07) 859 0583.

SUBMISSIONS: Submissions close 5pm 10 April 2017.
